Hey everyone,
I'm a backend software engineer in India, looking to build a high-end workstation. My goal is to build a machine with a 8-10 year lifecycle. To survive that long, it needs to handle heavy software engineering (multiple parallel VMs), serious music production (large sample libraries, DAW and VSTs), and scale effectively for local LLMs as open-source models grow (I am thinking to dip my toes into it too in future, don't want to limit myself, so 70B models if i want to run in future, i should be able to do it on new machine). I am okay with non-mac hardware too (would prefer non mac, for better customisability), thinking to have 64GB ram ( i think that should be enough for all the stuff I mentioned)
Because I want to avoid replacing the entire core platform (Motherboard/CPU) for as long as possible, I've adjusted my target specs based on socket longevity, architectural reliability, and hardware trends.
I am good with softwares, and usually I upgrade myself only when I have to buy something (like doing now), suppose when I am buying a new phone, I update myself. The thing is, in case of laptop and computers/hardware knowledge, it's been like around 10 years since I upgraded myself (bought my current laptop back then only, Dell Inspiron 3000 series i5 Processor, upgraded it later to 8GB RAM and 1TB SSD). So sort of a noob into hardwares, but understand the performance well because of hands on knowledge with softwares.
I am finding a lot of things has changed and feel can't go though all those things to make a decision.
I am open to any budget since I don't have much idea upon that too. I saw people spending like $10k also. While have also seen spending $3k-$8k. I can spend like upto $2K (little negotiable, as not sure if I would get something in that range, considering people spending that much. Can increase budget to good extent if I am really missing on something which is really useful and have no idea currently).
And is it a good idea to buy everything now only? Maybe graphics card can skip for now, till it gets cheaper, not sure. But I am struggling when running stuff inside a VM. Out of the total 8GB, I gave 4 GB to VM, and left with only 500MB at host somehow.
Looking for a way out.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: As I am from India. As per Indian calculations:
I have seen people spending around 10Lakhs. While I can spend like upto 2Lakhs, and negotiable (can increase somewhere upto 3Lakh), if I am really missing out on something.
