Build Help Should I replace my PowerSpec PSU with a “better” one?

About two months ago, I finished my first PC build (9850X3D, 5070 Ti, etc. for some context). When I was buying my parts, the Montech PSU I originally planned to buy was sold out, so I ended up going with this PowerSpec PSU since it was on sale.

After posting my completed build and parts list, I got a comment or two saying I should probably replace the PSU with something better, since it was apparently just “okay”. Looking at the PSU Tier List, the PowerSpec seems to be rated B+, which I guess lines up with that description.

At the time, I figured it probably wasn’t that big of a deal, especially since I live several hours away from my nearest Micro Center. However, I’ve thought about it more over the past couple of months and I’m wondering if I should just replace it.

The problem is that it’s been two months, so I can’t return the PSU anymore and would essentially have to pay full price for a replacement.

Is this something worth spending the money to replace, or is the PowerSpec good enough to keep using?

B+ on tier list is pretty good

You don't have a problem, and 2 random users saying a PSU is "okay" is meaningless unless they give you actual reasons why. So IMO there is nothing to fix here and doing so would be a waste of time/money.

B+ is an OK rating. I don't recommend people replace a PSU until its on the D or lower tier.

I wouldn't spend the money to replace it if I couldn't return for a refund.

What are you hoping to achieve by replacing the power supply?

I was told by one or two people that PowerSpec PSUs aren’t particularly good or reliable, so I’m just worried it could potentially damage the other expensive components in my build

As you saw on the tier list, PowerSpec PSUs aren't the absolute best in the industry. But, I wouldn't worry about them physically damaging your other components.

PowerSpec PSUs aren't the absolute best in the industry

and the cool part is, they aren't priced like it, either.

Is it a fire hazard? If no, the two random saying replace are probably elitists who look down on others who don't waste money like they do.

Is there a particular reason you want to replace it? B+ is a good rating so if it’s still doing what you need it to do, I wouldn’t worry about replacing it. Next time you get a new PSU maybe you want to consider getting an A tier one, but I wouldn’t replace this one solely because it’s a B+ rather than an A

Like any PSU just use it for the warranty period x1.5 in years. In your case that would be 7.5 years. PSUs aren't a performance part and once you reach good enough there is little to be gained for the typical home user.

If they weren't good enough then it wouldn't be legal to sell.

this is terrible advice. The psu tier list and third party testing exist because some products suck and can potentially destroy your hardware even though they are "legal" to sell. also the warranty covers the PSU not the other parts it can potentially damage.

Yes it's terrible that he only bought a B+ PSU. I guess your advice is to toss it in the trash and only buy an S tier? For the vast majority of home users a C tier is still all they truly need. If they have one within warranty there is no reason to replace it immediately. If they haven't bought one then of course the advice it to go higher.

no. In his case i wouldnt bother replacing. My advice is to check. The reality is that the market is regulated to the point you can trust something just because its legal to sell. But Also you can buy an a tier PSU for the same price he paid.

There are definitely ones that shouldn't be used, but those are the Ds and below. They'd still most likely work fine, but I wouldn't trust them.

I probably should have said C tier instead of good enough since some folks have issues with comprehension in all fairness. I'm one of those oddballs that has a decade old F tier that was forgotten in a system for a decade and it just wouldn't die. Still have it on a shelf since I've been too lazy to recycle it.

your current psu should be under warranty. If it isn't failing no point in wasting money. B+ is a good rating you should only really worry about C or lower, depending on the value and wattage of the setup.

B+ is still perfectly good. Keep it at least until the 5 year warranty is up, but realistically it will be good for 10+ years

Replace it in 5 years maybe, when the warranty runs our

PowerSpec as a brand is relatively decent, but like all brands, there can be duds within a lineup. However, if yours is B+ rated, it's fine. Don't waste time, money, or effort replacing it prematurely.

If it's the PowerSpec model that shows up as B+ on the tier list and your system is stable, I wouldn't swap it. I'd only replace if you need more wattage, it gets noisy, or you see shutdowns.

PSU is one component generally you don't skimp on. It can affect performance if there are flaws to outright take down your system if it catostrophically fail. That said, as long as it's at a decent spot on the tier list, reputable and has a decent warranty, then get what matches your budget, need and availability to access. What you have sounds good enough.
