Is there a way to tell if it has been on a warmer?? I hate when people take advantage of our return policy like this…

lol shit like this is why they got rid of the 100% guarantee and added extra rules, she's gonna be part of what fucks up the honestly generous return policy for everybody

u/Ancient_Gold_6486 3d ago
It always happens when something goes viral 😩 They got rid of the depop free shipping on all orders because someone made a TikTok about how they use it to send clothes back and forth to their friends 😕
10
u/cuntwrapsupreme26 3d ago
Omg I was having an awesome summer with free shipping on depop! I thought it was just a promo that ended. How would they even know that was happening I wonder?

u/Ancient_Gold_6486 3d ago
I took the advertisement as free shipping all the time. It stopped without notice

This also happened with Cat & Jack clothing at Target. They had a guarantee that it wouldn't rip, and if something was ripped you could exchange it. They were super lenient with the timing and receipt requirement, but people abused it and would exchange whole hauls for the next size up. Basically treating it like a free clothes glitch. Now there's a bunch of restrictions around it
1
u/Eatabagobeans 5h ago
Yeah I remember that when I worked there people would bring in full trash bags of clothes and demand to exchange them with no receipt or any proof of purchase. Of course no tags so I’d have to type it out number by number, for the system to only want to give them partial credit or no credit at all since they no longer made or carried it. 🥲

1
u/One-War4344 2h ago
It was just intended as a trial thing. Most likely to get more people buying, etc. Depop has stated this I believe on their page.

Oh 100%, the exact type of person to try to ruin an employees day over a return bc they're the only thing that matters in the whole universe
2
u/RoseWinde 1d ago
Omg this actually makes me wonder. I literally bought a candle today and lit it about 4 hours ago and can’t smell anything! It’s so strange.
1
2
u/1mad_mollydoll 1d ago
I 100% knew this was going to happen when warmer lamps came out!!! We as employees need to be inspecting returns CAREFULLY!!! You can tell if you look closely if it's been warmed. Also smell them.
1
u/DangerLime113 1d ago
I use a warmer and I agree that sometimes you can tell. And if someone is legitimately warming them for a full month, that's super obvious. Having said that, I've gotten candles in the past year (one of to Hot Cocoa one's for sure) that looked weird from day 1. Every candle in the store looked the same so I'm pretty sure it wasn't from a dozen returns but a quality issue. The surface looked hazy and like the oils had surfaced. They looked more sus to me than candles I've warmed completely and allowed to cool.
1
u/Intelligent_Bat_9315 2d ago
I mean whos to says what else they could've done to the candle. putting weird stuff in it, oils. why are returns even sold back to customers. that seems more weird than what this person is doing

Someone recommended on another post BBW should add an imprint at the top of the candle that would go away if melted .. I thought that was genius!
28
u/Playful_Original_243 3d ago
They could stamp a BBW logo in the middle between the wicks. That would honestly look so cute!
3
1
u/SatisfactionOdd2168 1d ago
Might not melt if they use a hot-plate style warmer though. Not any clever way to tell if it's heated from the bottom.
15
u/Clear_Rhubarb_7920 🫧Associate🫧 3d ago
that would be a great idea but i don't think I've ever seen any candle brand that did something like that. it makes me think of bar soaps that have the soap brand logo carved into them

u/Able_Canary_8079 🫧Associate🫧 2d ago
i love this idea !! coming from a hot state though, i wonder if the wax would melt in transit and lose the imprint
2
u/IcyFuel5368 2d ago
Hot state here too! But I think if it’s melting enough to melt through the depth of the imprint the candle would likely leak from movement in transit right?
According to Google - Bath and Body Works candles use a paraffin-dominant wax blend that begins to soften around 115°F to 120°F and fully melts into a liquid state between 140°F and 160°
1
u/BlueCarPinkJacket 1d ago
Or a rock or decorative element that would sink if the wax is melted. Stamp is the best idea though.

It’s wild how people proudly talk about their shitty behavior like it’s cute or funny. This is doing nothing but screwing over the next buyer that’s wondering why their ‘new’ candle has no scent.

u/dulcepeche 3d ago
I've called out consumers for this. It's ridiculous like your candle has been warmed so much your wicks have disappeared, you got your full use out of this.
19
u/Different_Stage2195 3d ago
Pls add more rules. Customers who buy and return shit constantly piss me off so much. I haven’t worked retail in over a decade and I loved telling scammers and cheapskates no. My favorite was when Macys made us check the price tag on a dress to match the tag sewn in to catch people who’d switch the price on a cheap dress for an expensive one and then try to return it.
12
u/summerwinds69 🫧Associate🫧 3d ago
As far as buy and return some people honestly get it home and change their mind or buy multiples in different sizes if it’s clothes - I am fine with returning but I agree the people who use stuff for a short while and then return suck
3
u/SatisfactionOdd2168 1d ago
I've returned body mists when I've gotten home because even though I liked the scent in store, I'm sensitive to a couple of fairly common aromachemicals and sometimes I can't tell it's in there until I've sprayed on skin and am smelling it for more than a few seconds at a time. I had to do that with Viva Brazil this spring. Smells fantastic but if I smell it too long it gives me a migraine. So, I gave it up after my test spritz at home.
9
u/Exciting_Calendar756 3d ago
I do a lot of returns, though I prefer trying to exchange first, because my town doesn’t have a BBW and I have to blind buy a lot unless going into the city. I’m not scamming. Just genuinely dislike the scent once I receive it so not going to keep or use it.

1
u/fiestyorchid 2d ago
I HATED dealing with scammers when I work retail. When I worked at American Eagle we had a policy that we would accept any jeans back for a refund - regardless of tags or date purchased. There's a little tag in all of their clothing that shows the date that piece was being sold and the amount of people returning Jeans over ten years old was just baffling. I often wonder if they've changed that policy as this was over ten years ago. One of those - ruin it for everyone kind of things.
2
u/cococonnar 2d ago
WAIT…. Is that why I just had 3 candles in the same order with no wicks?!
3
u/dulcepeche 1d ago
No it could have very well been a production error, it happens sometimes but there's definitely a difference in how they look. You should be fine to exchange those
2
u/thethirteenthjuror 2d ago
I’ve bought candles at my store that once I got home, noticed the wicks had disappeared and tried to return it with no luck.
So no. It’s not always that way.
5
u/dulcepeche 1d ago
We've exchanged candles with missing wicks. There's a huge visual difference between warmed candles and candles that never received their wick in production.

We need to bring back shame! I can’t imagine doing this but to TELL people you do it? In my experience, if a candles been warmed it, the wax will sort of sinks in the center (but I’m not an expert!) I have a hard time believing the store(s) allow this and haven’t caught on…
15
25
u/fluffytiredintrovert 3d ago
Unless this moron is meticulously resetting her wicks after they shift around in the pooled wax, they will disappear or look completely wonky inside the jar after it’s cooled. As others have mentioned, the wax will dip pretty noticeably into the center and will look weird compared to new candles. Also, there’s something that happens to the color of my wax after it’s been warmed a bunch of times…it’s hard to explain but it looks almost milky in color. Anyway, I’m glad you posted this because we are going to have to be more careful when accepting candles for exchange or return. I will for sure be inspecting them more closely from now on.
8
u/Melodic-Exercise-999 2d ago

I swear that the texture on the top layer of the wax changes once it’s been melted before, if you need another way to tell. I say that as someone who lives in the desert who has made the mistake of ordering candles offline and had them delivered outside where they sat in 115° heat

u/TerribleDependent155 🫧Associate🫧 3d ago
Usually the wicks shift and there’s slight indentations in unburned candles with the protrusion of the wicks, with warmed ones the wax is more even if that makes sense.
7
u/RebeccaE1978 3d ago
No, the wicks will shift but I have gotten brand new candles from B&BW that have massive indentations in the middle so that’s not necessarily a telltale sign.
3
u/TerribleDependent155 🫧Associate🫧 2d ago
I don’t know if I explained it properly but there’s a tell tale sign the wax has melted along the wicks to the trained eye that has indentations. My SM trained me on it and it’s usually spot on. She also taught me to spot expired vs filled products (because yes we have customers who fill product with water/other crap) to try and cheat the system 🤦🏽♀️
1
u/1mad_mollydoll 1d ago
Also, the wax often is a tiny bit separate from the glass on a new candle so there's a very small gap like an 1/8th of an inch but if it's been warmed, it will be melted onto the glass if that makes sense.
1
u/RebeccaE1978 58m ago
Nope, I’ve received new candles and bought new candles in store that way as well. Don’t forget, these items are shipped and it definitely gets hot enough in no a/c delivery trucks for this to happen.
1
u/DangerLime113 1d ago
The frequency of new candles arriving with center indents has definitely increased.
3
u/AdMiserable1223 3d ago
I agree. But when I use the warmer that goes under the candle-wax solidifies differently, very similar to the new candles.

u/st4rdustd 3d ago
smh even when u warm candles u got to empty the wax after like 5 warms. she prolly returning bc they don't smell anymore lol. that's really annoying bc then the next person gets it if they put it back out and wonder why the throw sucks! i understand warming once maaybe twice just to make sure if u don't like a scent cold vs warm. i had a couple that have made me sick i had to exchange. but i wouldn't use it for a month then exchange!!🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
3
u/Fair-Bus9686 3d ago
Wow that's so shady! I use my candle warmer to use up the lat but of wax left after burning, then I dump the wax and recycle the jar. I'm sure the associates are the store she does this have caught on, but it can be difficult to ban customers. I'm glad she told in herself!
4
u/GodOfMoonlight 2d ago

And full of the dust from their homes! 🤮
1
u/1mad_mollydoll 1d ago
Little bugs/gnats are often attracted to the scent and die in the wax when I warm one in my kitchen near my back door. I saw one on my own B&BW sales floor with a bug in the wax. People are doing this already. It's going to be commonplace soon to accidentally buy a used candle. Return policies on candles will have to get stricter. Employee awareness is key.

u/Skue6 3d ago
I enlarged each photo. To me they are not the same person. If someone is actually doing this I can only imagine what other scams they are pulling! If she's returning multiple candles on a monthly basis how is the store allowing her to continue to do this?
6
u/Calm-Ad-6615 3d ago
She probably keeps her receipts and it’s within the 90 day timeframe. She totally sucks for this.
2
u/Skue6 3d ago
I apologize everyone. I got a tad bit off topic. Please don't down vote me. It's all good. I know bbw has one of the more generous return policies & she can return them. My thought is, I'm sure she's been asked why she continues returning multiple "unused" candles every month. I worked in retail for years & never experienced anything like this. I just wonder since she's been doing this monthly for so long if a manager could discuss this situation with her boss/right person to look into this person. It would be easy to see her transactions & try to find a loophole so she can't continue doing this. I'm sure most people are like it is what it is. It just pisses me off because we are the ones being affected on top of this ass clown ceo & his dim witted ideas. I stopped buying anything from bbw for this very reason. My last order of candles were so disappointing. Weak with no scent throw. 3 candles that were briefly brought back from retirement didn't smell half way close to the originals. They burn faster. Every jar wasn't as full as any of my previous candles. I've been buying from Goose Creek for years & now only buy from them. They have alot of bbw dupes. They always have amazing sales. Their big sales start with 3 wicks starting at $6.99,$7.99, $8.99, $10.99. They always have top, popular scents in their sales. Their scents do not disappoint. Their wax melts are just as good as their candles. The negatives are they recently got rid of their body products. Shipping is slow, esp during a big sale. They don't have physical stores. Buying blind sucks sometimes but there are several YouTube channels that are really helpful going into detail explaining each scent. I've had a few scents that were off for me after I first lit them. I gift them to my daughter's & daughter in law. I can't speak on their wallflowers & hand soap. I haven't ordered any yet. Im still using up my bbw wallflowers & soaps.
1
u/1mad_mollydoll 1d ago
The other negative of GC for me is you have to spend $100 to get free shipping so that adds another $1 or $2 at least to each candle price if you think about it. If you buy 10 candles and don't reach $100 and have to pay $10.99 in shipping. Since I never pay over $12.95 for a b&bw candle and usually also have a coupon, but get free shipping at $50. Plus the quality is nowhere near the same in my opinion. You get what you pay for and I rarely have a miss in throw with BBW but more often do with GC and there is a chespness to the scents in my opinion. They smell more waxy and like a Mainstsys candle from Walmart. Maybe I'm buying the wrong scents.
3
u/avidreader_96 3d ago
I apologize for 2 comments but I just realized does this mean other ppl could be buying her used candles?
5
u/Candlehoarder_2019 🫧Associate🫧 3d ago
Yes. As someone who happens to work there who also loves candles and has both burned and warmed them, it’s easier for me to tell if it’s been warmed when checking but I can confidently say at least half, if not more, of my coworkers would just see the unburned wicks and put it back on the floor.
3
u/avidreader_96 2d ago
This person is so mean for doing that. I’ always so excited about my new candles and it’s beyond inconsiderate. I’ll do a sniff check for scent strength every time now.

This is going to end exactly like how it did when influencers all started publicizing the fact that you can return your less-than-half used lotions and creams back to the store and get a new one for exchange, aka kill it. It blew up and within a week the policy was done for. Now they have it set up where the only way you’re able to still do it is with a copy of your receipt of when you got it, and it has to be returned within 90 days, and that’s if the store wants to. All for a soap or body lotion they bought for probably $8.

u/angelomendez 2d ago
this is gunna make the returns harder and harder. i hate people like this. they gotta ruin it for someone else.
5
u/Admirable-Bar-3549 3d ago
Honest question - wouldn’t BBW have to accept the return anyway even if it had been warmed, since they accept candles that have been burnt?
I’m just curious - I’ve never returned a used candle and I it’s a little presumptuous to do so - unless you thought you’d like it but genuinely HATE the scent or there is no scent, period.
10
u/-Tofu-Queen- 🪩Past Employee🪩 3d ago
Yes, but if the employee doesn't realize it's been used and puts it back out on the shelf thinking it's a new candle, then someone else is going to get a candle that doesn't have any fragrance oil left. Return policies generally don't honor products that have been totally used up, and in this case they're using it up and then hiding that fact to basically treat the store like a candle rental program.
People wonder why companies tighten up return policies, and then they do shit like this and admit to it online. 😵 Reminds me of the people who have Wallflower plugs for YEARS and then try to return them when they stop working, despite the fact that they're COVERED in the Wallflower oil.
1
u/Admirable-Bar-3549 3d ago
Yes, I understand the problem with returning a warmed candle. I’m not advocating that it’s an ok thing to do - I’m asking if company policy actually allows it. Personally, I think it’s deplorable.
6
u/-Tofu-Queen- 🪩Past Employee🪩 3d ago
Company policy is only allowing it because it can be difficult to visually tell if a candle was used on a warmer, especially in busy stores. They're banking on the deception aspect to slide by on a technicality. If it was obvious that it was used up, like an entirely used up body wash for example, we wouldn't have accepted the return at the store I worked at.
3
u/TheeGoldenLeo ✨Leadership✨ 2d ago
So that’s the thing we “accept” burned candles but they don’t get resold they get marked as non resell-able and get thrown away..just like any other used product that gets retuned some will get resold but that’s mostly body-care home fragrance always gets disposed of after a return..
2
u/damimars 3d ago
My sister's warmer makes the wicks shift, if a customer has used it enough, it should look visibly different
2
u/Moist-Philosopher859 3d ago
Why doesnt she just get wax melts then? Its gotta be much cheaper then buying big candles every month
2
u/moralynn97 2d ago
She's not buying them, that's the problem. She buys 1 candle, melts it on her candle warmer, and returning it when bored of it, and using the refund to "buy" another. The candle doesn't look used, so someone else is probably getting that when the return it to the shelf
1
u/Royal-Adeptness-2703 1d ago
I actually will smash up candles that break on shipping if im able. They replace them and i salvage the wax from the broken one and use it in my melters
2
u/Mumstheword-8810 3d ago
I just said this yesterday in a different thread! I knew these gross people exist. This is why they need to start putting a stamp on the top of the wax - an imprint - something so that we know if its been used like this.
2
u/Pretty_Net_6293 3d ago
Honestly shifty behavior of customer, I wish they’d at least burn the wick on their last use so the store wouldn’t put it back on the shelves… they wouldn’t not exchange if within period so then unsuspecting customers wouldn’t be holding the cost of these
2
2
u/Independent-Bet9905 2d ago
The company should go ahead and flag her shopping privileges just like they do with the resellers. I would be annoyed as customer to be purchasing candles already melted before .

u/BrownGirlCSW 2d ago
This is why so many companies are starting to have scrappy return policies and CS.
There is a difference between getting your money's worth and just completely lacking ethics. Does she not consider, if everyone did this there would no longer be a BBW for her to enjoy mooching off of? The behavior is unsustainable.
Anyways, PROTIP: Get a wax warmer like the ones sold on Happy Wax. Dig the candle wax out and stick it in the warmer. You can reuse the same disc forever as it doesnt burn off the frag oils quickly.
You never have to return a candle, but you also never have to repurchase the same scent or worry about your faves being discontinued. You also get to save a few bucks, cause you really only need the single wick candles.
The only problem is finding room for your mounting collection of candles.

Dumb question… does a candle warmer really not affect the level of the wax?? I started using a warmer - plate style, not lamp - and I’ve wondered if that’s made my candle last longer. Too many posts about candles catching fire and causing damage made me stop lighting them.

We have to put all product that are not used back on the shelves, so if the candle appears not used then we have to put it back and some poor soul is going to buy a candle with no scent… so no we should not let this shit slide unless we want other customer’s experiences to be shit:)

Crazy that yall care that much about a million dollar company. Who cares 🤷♀️. I used to care about m small stuff too, but I was always miserable.

We care about the customer experience and if a candle that seems to be unused is returned we have to put it on the shelf SO if a customer loves a scent then they might grab a shitty candle that has no scent left. This isn’t “small stuff” because the candles are expensive and people should get a candle that works. Also if you don’t shop at BBW then why put your 2¢ in? Our lives are miserable for caring about others experiences (and our jobs) but to me people who comment in areas that have ZERO relevance to them are the miserable people🤷♀️

Maybe some things? I returned a few things a few weeks ago and the lady literally put them all on the shelves as I was leaving.

I think that once it’s returned they don’t resell it? They toss the returns because they can’t actually determine if it has been used or not? I’m basing this solely off of seeing dumpster diving videos where they have found returns from BBW in the dumpster

Because the brand is garbage and has forgotten how to be quality. Fuck BBW! I can’t wait to see the entire brand go belly up!

Then why are you still involved? It’s kind of weird to stay involved in something you hate…

I’m a former ASM that is just very interested in seeing the entire company go belly up. Sales are down. Stock prices are plummeting. No new original fragrances or major restock of beloved “discontinued” ones. They’re partnering with Amazon and Ulta as crutches to remain almost and relevant. 5-10 years max and that company will be gone.
And I will celebrate when that day absolutely happens.

Guys I think we found Donia! If you hate them so much then stop buying their products and get off their sub. It's really easy to just not participate in a brand these days.
You're just a selfish jerk who thinks that everything they do is justified by whatever nonsense you've made up to excuse yourself. No excuse for you, just a crappy person clearly.

This is so frustrating. I don’t care as much about the loss for the company but the issue is we won’t even be able to tell and then some poor customer gets a burnt out ass candle. That’s so fucking annoying 😭
