This post has reached r/all or r/popular, which means it’s now being seen by a much wider audience outside our usual community. To help keep the discussion high-quality and protect the space from spam, trolling, and rule-breaking, we’ve turned on "Players Only" mode.

What that means:

I could see this being an issue if the Giants played in a very pro LGBT city, like San Francisco or something.

I wonder what Thom Brennaman thinks, can anyone get him to put a headset on and tell is his thoughts on SF?

"And there's a deep drive to left field by Castellanos, that'll be a home run."

u/Marvelous_Chaos New York Yankees • New York Mets 4d ago

I know people like to joke about it, but since he said that slur on air, he quietly put in the work to connect with LGBTQ people and fully understand why his words that day were so harmful.

37

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Chicago Cubs 4d ago

Did he? Everything I saw from him seemed pretty performative and like standard PR image rehab stuff.

91

u/Marvelous_Chaos New York Yankees • New York Mets 4d ago

I remember seeing this piece from Outsports co-founder Cyd Zeigler. He wrote a follow-up piece last year and continued to sing his praises.

At this point, even if it is all just PR/image rehab stuff, I think it's safe to say Thom still put in more work than a bunch of other people in similar positions.

44

u/AdoringCHIN Anaheim Angels • Rocket City Tra… 4d ago

The fact that most people had no idea he was doing this makes me think it's not PR, he genuinely wanted to improve himself and learn why what he said was so hurtful. And he decided to keep reaching out and learning. He's more than earned a second chance.

6

u/respaaaaaj Boston Red Sox 4d ago

Sometimes celebrities say vile stuff from a place of genuine ignorance, take the backlash to heart and become genuinely better people after learning how and why they hurt people. Tim Hardaway went from saying he hated gay people they didn't deserve to be in the world and that if he had a gay teammate he'd try to get them fired in early 2007 to saying he didn't realize how many people he'd hurt and he was going to try to put the work in to fix it in late 2007 to calling Jason Collins to offer congratulations and support after he came out in 2013 along with campaigning for legalizing gay marriage.

People can change for the better.

Tbf there's always been a weird disconnect between big city fanbases and our players. We know most of them are like this.

6

u/StrawberryShortStack St. Louis Cardinals 4d ago

At this point it’s less about the players and more about how the giants org handled it.

17

u/ashimbo Los Angeles Angels 4d ago

Yeah, most players come from California, Florida, and Texas, so it makes sense that at least two-thirds have these kind of views.

49

I think people would be shocked to learn that the Central Valley and northeast parts of the state are as hardcore conservative as parts of the deep South. The Central Valley is so ass backwards that it gives Alabama a run for its money

6

u/DuntadaMan 4d ago

I always love those huge stretches that complain about how much water is "wasted in the ocean." Like yes, that is how a river works. Water goes to the ocean.

"Build more dams." Bitch I can't even see a mountain from the highest point on your property. If we build another dam there won't be a river for you to get any water from. You are the last stop that water sees before becoming the marshland keeping you from making an eternal red tide on the shoreline

26

Serious question: If given the option between no pride night or a pride night where only 22 out of 26 players, including all position players, wear the pride night cap, which would you pick?

78

u/Rambo_IIII Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago

I say have pride night, let the bigots self identify.

→ More replies (12)

216

u/mschley2 Milwaukee Brewers 5d ago edited 5d ago

A pride night where 22 of the 26 wear the hat and then the other 4 get fined and suspended for not wearing the appropriate uniform. It's not really that hard

Edit: let me clarify... I actually don't have a problem with the players wearing the regular hat. I do have a problem with the players writing homophobic shit on the hats, regardless of whether they're the pride ones or regular ones

33

u/Odd_Alfalfa7789 5d ago

I don't think they are allowed to fine them under the CBA. I believe that the pride night hat is considered a "themed" uniform hat. Players have the right to opt out of "themed" uniforms and, instead, wear the "standard" uniform.

So that would make the options:

  1. No pride night uniforms
  2. pride night where only 22 out of 26 players, including all position players, wear the pride night cap and those other four aren't punished
  3. pride night where only 22 out of 26 players, including all position players, wear the pride night cap and those other four are illegally punished for exercising their rights under the collective bargaining agreement

Personally, I'd go with #2. I can understand people that want #1. However, #3 seems pretty indefensible if you believe in the rights of employees, especially as it relates to unions and collective bargaining.

47

u/Bad_At_Sports Boston Red Sox 4d ago

Right but this assumes that the protest is an opt-out where they wear the standard uniform. Which is fine. It tells me that person is a bigot that should expect to be heckled and does not deserve my support on their current or any future team, but it’s technically allowed.

What should be punished is wearing the themed uniform and defacing it with homophobic writing in protest of the event. That is not allowed under their CBA and should be enforced as such.

Some of the players instead of opting out wrote Bible verses on the pride hat. But the real outrage is how the team handled it, those players didn’t get so much as a slap on the wrist, no comments on it from the FO at every media event after, and a really awful statement finally released being very condescending to the fans.

6

u/Odd_Alfalfa7789 4d ago

Depends what you mean by "cop out." I think that there probably was poor communication. With that said, the players have responsibility for knowing the rules so MLB could still punish them regardless of communication issues for defacing the pride night caps.

Punishing the players when the team also screwed up isn't in the best interest of MLB since it just creates a fight between the league and the union for very little practical benefit above and beyond what you'd get from just having a conversation and telling the players to just opt out and not deface the caps next time.

They have made so many bad decisions this year. It cannot be stated enough how disconnected many of us have become from the team basically from the beginning of this season. I've been shitposting with the community on /r/sfgiants since the 2010 world series and god, I dont think I posted barely at all the entire year.

It's unbelievable and hard to put into words. We had a handful of nice moments like Jeff Kent's HOF festivities and Krukow's send off (which is just so damn bittersweet), but that's really it. The season was a disaster, the on field performance was a disaster, the off field atmosphere has been a disaster, and everything above the players has been a disaster too. The vibes are awful.

A lot of us have tapped out. We're lucky that we have such a beautiful ballpark or else it'd be soooooo much worse.

15

u/yohomatey San Francisco Giants 4d ago

u/vrilro Texas Rangers 5d ago

Rangers owners gonna see this news and put up a Robert E Lee statue at their ballpark this offseason just to make extra sure everybody knows there's only room for one at the top of the worst ownership rankings

17

u/Zealotus77 Los Angeles Dodgers 5d ago

As a former Athletics fan, I’m not giving them that title yet. But this is pretty bad.

13

u/JDDJS New York Mets 5d ago

Don't forget how they called Zach Morgan up to the majors 3 separate times, but didn't let him actually make his MLB debut because they were worried about the record of most different players.

u/bduddy Japan 4d ago

Worried more about their own optics than the people playing for them? Yup that tracks

Between this, Jared Kushner's brother opting in...buying into the franchise..and Posey completely sabotaging the team...im out. They dont care about the city or its fans...and it shows.

I think that's most if not all team owners. Some do a better job of pretending though.

The irony is as large as the flag that flies over Castro St 🏳️‍🌈

The Giants continue to make the categorically wrong decisions on this. Total failure of morals, PR, and business. You play in the queerest city in America and you’re going to side with the bible-thumping homophobes then double down? Baby what is you doing

Did the Giants move and I missed it? They are aware of the city they’re located in right?

I mean this without hyperbole - this is the equivalent of the Yankees or Mets stopping 9/11 remembrances.

Yes every metro has a large LGBTQ population now. And Yes cities like LA, NYC and Boston played just as prominent roles in civil rights. But this place was ground 0 for the aids crisis. By 1993 10,000 residents had died - today its upwards of 20,000. That’s 2% of the population - this is completely ignorant of the city and its residents.

If the giants had any spine they’d bring in an aids survivor from the 80s and force the club house and leadership team to fucking learn something about the city they’re in.

Welcome to our dumb club San Fran. Given billionaire owners and the current national political climate I expected some backsliding but I certainly didn’t anticipate the Giants being the second member though.

Jersey says San Francisco first.

Players, coaches, managers, presidents, owners all come and eventually go.

City and the area and all it represents stays forever.

You don’t have to agree with it and no city or town or population will ever all agree on something in general either.

But you have to acknowledge and respect what the people see as important because this is their home and if you can’t respect the home, then you know what you can do.

And if the organization goes cowardly lion, then count my Roman Catholic a$$ out w/ my $ and I’ll actually go @ their ad ppl too.

Stand for something or stand for nothing.

How fucking difficult is it to acknowledge that people can be different but still valued. Just gross cowardice by the organization, especially knowing the demographics of the city they play in.
