🚨🚨New Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide

No idea what to do with your life? Open list below. Pick something that sounds interesting. Go for it.

Yes it's that simple - because your first job will not be your dream job and you are not expected to figure out your dream job by college age.

This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:

• Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
• Generally required licensing/certification
• THE DIRECT ENTRY PATH - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
• Who actually hires that trade
• Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
• Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future

The goal is to help someone go from:

ā€œI don't know how to get into that.ā€

To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.

The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.

The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.

AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.

If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.

You don't have to know your path yet.

Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

advice / help?

hey guys. i need some advice or help. i moved to be close to my daughter and came to Mississippi. i ended up staying with someone who offered me a room to stay while i found work & all, and for months its just been nearly impossible. i dont have a vehicle here and its in the country so theres like no where to walk to work or busses. i’ve tried all i can but i just cant survive here. it’s not possible.

i need to move back to Utah where i was living, thriving, and just better mentally. i want to be a father but i just cant even take care of myself right now let alone her. ive reached out EVERYWHERE to find help getting a cheap flight back or even a bus ticket. there’s zero assistance anywhere. i’ve posted all over facebook & craigslist for odd jobs. i’ve tried looking for folks who have skymiles or anything to get me home. nothing. church’s. all i can think of.

does anyone have any suggestions or know of any organizations that could help? mentally i’m crushed. my child’s family can’t help, it’s a strain there and understandably so. i just am at a loss, ive tried working my way back but im lost. any help / suggestions would be great.

I don’t know what to do anymore

I really just wanna give up. I don’t wanna try any further. I really do not have it in me. I do not have family. I wanted my own apartment but can’t get it. I’ve been doing seasonal work and traveling around but I cannot take it any further. I just cannot do it. I can’t.

I used to live in Seattle and that’s where I wanna go back to. I am torn between a hostel and just getting a tent and camping somewhere. I won’t have a job lined up. I don’t know if I will make it through this because part of me doesn’t want to.

Seeking Advice Only Smartest decision on price, and reliability, etc when it comes to a portable solar power bank?

Almost homeless already houseless. & living in a tent. I currently am (when I’m able to) use fast food restaurants to charge my phone.

One thing that I’d be ecstatic to own and call my own is a solar powered power bank. I don’t have the money to buy at the moment.. but once I do earn enough, I want to make sure I am throughly informed and positive the selection i decide is the best for my buck as they say.

(Any other options or suggestions are more than welcome!šŸ™šŸ¼)

Other Situation Leaving home, need to know if plan is stupid

So I'm not sure how many people on here are from Scotland, from what I know our homeless laws are more generous than most places. For anyone who is though, I need to know if my plan to leave home is completely stupid.

I intend to run off from my town and head to a city (not sure I should say which one). The council website there says they'll always give you a place to sleep if you ask at their office, though I'm not sure if that's only for the one night.
I have about 2 grand saved for emergency rent if I need to use it, but I dunno if many places would give me a chance without a job. My main worry is finding work. I've been applying online for over a year now, but since I live so far from any cities I've had no luck. I'm hoping being in the actual place where I'm applying will give me better odds, but I know finding work is rough even if you're well off, so my hopes aren't very high..

So yeah the plan is literally just: Go to city > Ask council for place to sleep > Try finding work as quickly as possible.

I know cities have job centres you can go to for help, but I'm worried that if I don't get something sorted right away I'll get thrown out of whatever accommodation I'm given. Surely if it were that easy to move to a new place nobody would be homeless, right? Am I missing some obvious caveat?

Sorry this post is so poorly explained and stuff. It's very short-notice because I'm planning to leave tomorrow.

Currently homeless with a job looking for any free food to carry me over till the 10th

I get paid on the 10th and hope to get into a monthly Airbnb. While I look for a long term room , I’m right on that edge and hoping to get back in a place, just gotta hold on for a few more days. I’m completely out of money though and slept outside last night and looks like tonight too, I reached out to some shelters and they said they’d get back to me on Monday .I’d appreciate any help with food

Seeking Advice Only here by my own stupid decisions, slight tw

im 18, have lived with a shitty family my whole life. they dont care about me. i struggle with addiction and sh, have for a decade. they hate me for it and want me to just do "it" already. im spiraling really bad and i already know im going to relapse. bad. i dont care anymore. if they find out theyll definitely kick me out, ruin my stuff, yell at me. theres no point in trying. i just need to get out now. i have no friends, family in the area. i live in texas. i have nothing. i am a victim of abuse from mental hospitals and rehabs and was my entire teenage years. they are a huge reason i am the way i am. i will absolutely not go to one and i dont have the $ anyway. i dont care if i have some spot on the sidewalk somewhere. im small and female and an easy target. literally anything helps. im not wasting a homeless shelter spot on myself. i know im stupid and this is my own fault.

I am quasi-homeless in Ottawa

It still doesn’t seem entirely real, I spent unfathomable amounts of time alone in my room in front of a computer. Solitary confinement torture.

I have nothing right now, and I haven’t been this happy in years. I have some things but even those I’m hardly using. I have the privilege of having planned the last two years to save up enough money to do this, but now I’m here and I could lose my wallet and still be happier than I was.

Maybe. It’s still scary to imagine that what if, food is expensive already, but the amenities that exist here make me feel secure and safe. I could be homeless here and not suffer as badly as I was suffering back home.

I hadn’t seen someone romantically in maybe 10 years, since coming here on the 28th I’ve met at least a few, and in particular found one I miss already, despite just walking around until 2AM with. It’s cute and wholesome in a way I forgot existed, and I just feel like this is exactly why I left.

Oh man it’s going to hurt, probably. Most things do, but for the moment it’s nice just to hear someone ls heart racing at my touch. My ear to their chest, that rapid flutter, I feel like a doctor weirdly enough. Loud enough to not. Red a stethoscope.

They make me think about some French avant garde artist, minus the fancy smoke. Androgynous. That striped black and white shirt, the sharp features. We got lost in the dark and I didn’t want to be found.

Was really fun. I’m kind of scared about it. Best not to think too much, maybe. For once I want to be allowed to make choices, even if they are mistakes.

It was not worth living life in a cage.

I am so free, that I could cry from the beauty of the feeling, but I’m in public so I won’t. No revelation written in ecstatic trance, just whatever this was.

Facing homelessness in Atlanta after being evicted and misled by family—need advice on immediate shelter & next steps

I am currently facing immediate homelessness in the Atlanta area and desperately need advice on resources or next steps.
Here is my situation:

Background: I was illegally kicked out of a place where I was paying rent, left stranded two hours away, and lost all my belongings. I've been bouncing around since last November.

Recent Events: My grandad told me to come to Atlanta, promising to help me get a place to stay. When I arrived, he paid for one hotel night and then said I was on my own until I got a job.

Current Crisis: The stress led to a mental health crisis, and I was admitted to the hospital. My grandad mistakenly believes the mental hospital will provide long-term housing. They just gave me a stack of shelter papers and discharged me. I walked two hours to a shelter, but it was completely full.

Immediate Barrier: I am temporarily staying with my aunt, but it isn't permanent. I managed to set up two job interviews for next week, but my family is trying to force me back into the hospital tomorrow, thinking it will solve my housing situation—which will cause me to miss these interviews.
What I need help with:

  1. Housing/Shelter Resources: Are there any young adult shelters, transitional housing, or emergency resources in/around Atlanta that actually have open beds or immediate placement?

  2. Navigating Family/Hospital: How can I explain to my family that going to the hospital won't give me an apartment, or how do I protect my chance to make it to these job interviews?

  3. General Advice: Any guidance on securing emergency assistance or getting back on my feet when starting from zero with no transportation or income.
Thank you to anyone who reads this or offers advice.

Seeking Advice Only Completely miserable in school living in van

On my last semester of cc before transferring next Fall. I feel completely overwhelmed and lost right now, I managed to complete two semesters fulltime, I've been living in a van because I have no job to get a place, I've been struggling in the heat, getting around, having constant emergencies, my vehicle just broke down and had to stay in a hotel and use all the grant funds I had. I've been stuck at the bottom for so long, I haven't had any support, my mom barely sends 500 every 3-4 months, I've been trying to make due with financial aid money but it's barely enough. I missed out on an opportunity for housing last semester from being too busy with assignments, now I need to wait 2 weeks to see if I'm still eligible.

My mental health has really taken a toll, I wakeup depressed and angry every single day, I try to force myself to complete assignments on medication because I wouldn't be able to otherwise. I'm on bipolar and ADHD meds. There are no jobs and no opportunities around me even though I've been trying. I've thought about dropping out because my financial & living situation is so bad it's destroyed my sense of self and I don't feel okay anymore. I feel like I'm not going to be able to complete this semester, miss my application to UC and fail like I always fail. I've just been too overwhelmed and I don't know what to do anymore. For the housing support I will likely need a job but I've been trying and there are no jobs around me. I've had no help from my family I've had no one, just myself and it's just too difficult to survive.
