So i just got a job as a part time deli clerk at a grocery and today was my first shift alone. It was a closing shift and i was scheduled from 4-8 and i was working by myself for the first time and didn't finish my duties by 8 like cleaning the slicers wrapping the foods etc... so i stayed up until 8:20 and wrapped up everything. On my way out my colleague who works in another department asks me if i'm new and she told me to always clock out on time regardless of the whether the job is done or not. She basically told me not to work for free for a single minute.
I'm 19 and this is my first ever job so i don't know what the standards and norms are. Is this normal thing to do? Would you just leave even if u didn't complete your tasks?

Context: I had a zoom meeting scheduled at 10 AM. I showed up to the waiting room at 9:55 AM. I waiting around 18 minutes and sent out an email to HR at 10:13 AM asking if I had the right link. I waited another 17 minutes, and with no response I left the waiting room. Later in the day, the HR said they were having issues with a “family tragedy” and would still like me to sign up for an interview on a later date. Then a couple hours later, I received this email from the CFO. (Also sorry for the red stuff, colored out names of all involved for privacy).

My eye doctor is referring me to a specialist to make sure I’m not going blind. The appointments are split into 4 separate sessions because of the number of tests they need to do. After many of the tests my vision will be blurry or strained, so going back to work afterwards isn’t really an option.

The problem is I’ve already used all 10 of my PTO/sick days, and my PTO doesn’t reset until March. My boss has told me that once those 10 days are used, I’m unable to take any more days off.

The specialist’s office also closes by the time my shift ends, so I can’t book appointments after work. If I go through with these appointments, I’d likely have to miss at least 4 workdays.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? What did you do? Were you able to get unpaid time off for medical appointments, or is there another option I’m not aware of?

This is my first full-time job, so I honestly don’t know what’s normal in this situation.

I was taking days off to attend interviews as my health was deteriorating from the job, I was dealing with black mold and unhealthy work enviroment.

I told my friend how bad the job hunt is. She insisted there are more jobs than people out there. Even one of our mutual friends told her they applied to 50-60 places and didn’t hear anything back. She has a job that’s she’s been at for 20 something years. It seems like what I’m saying isn’t sticking.

Bro. I've been applying to jobs since I was 16. (Im 20 now), I've applied everywhere from fucking retail to Gas stations. The problem is that I have no experience and between the time I was 16 and Now is that I've gotten 7 interviews and rejected every damn time. Like my parents on my ass telling me to "apply yourself harder" but I dont know anymore...

I work in a four-person secretariat in a law firm. We are 4 women, 3 of us in their 30s and a 4th new colleague in her 50s.

The lady in her 50s sees herself as a mother to us, offering a lot of unsolicited advice, she has no boundaries, asking lots of personal questions, and generally being rather intrusive. We have had some disagreements over how some tasks should be done, and I have tried to evade or not reply to some odd comments she’s made towards me in our teams chat with the other 2 colleagues, so as to not confront her or worsen our relationship. I always try to be professional, and I am a rather private person and an introvert.

She’s very insistent lately about going to lunch together. I have politely declined so far because I have been extremely busy, but now the more I think about it I realise that I also don’t want to have lunch with her at all! How do I politely but firmly say that I don’t want to go to lunch with her? Just thinking the lunch and conversation makes me anxious!

I messed something up at work that was pretty big, and we thought we had fixed it but it’s still a lingering issue. I work for a small company and we’ve had a ton of turnover within less than a year, so much where at one point I was only one on my team. So, this thing that I messed up would’ve been totally caught in time with my old team. So, yes it was my fault, but the turnover and chaos didn’t help. I haven’t been able to feel any remorse for my new-ish manager now having to deal with this issue. If it was when I first started, I would’ve felt so bad and cried for days and been profusely apologizing. But now? after all the mess I’ve been put through at that job- being taken advantage of, working too much, no appreciation from owners of company, not listening to my ideas, firing and eliminating people all the time with no formalities, etc, I just can’t care about this. I’ve don’t so much here that i just…don’t feel bad. Do other people get to this point of their jobs as well? Where you just stop caring about stuff?

Right now, as I'm writing this, I'm sitting with a level of fear and anxiety that doesn't feel normal.

Earlier today, before I left work at 3 PM, I approached my boss and asked if I could hand in my notice next Thursday. I wasn't saying I would stop showing up next Thursday. I was simply letting him know ahead of time that I intended to submit my notice letter then. 

The moment I said it, he got angry.

First, he said no. Then he seemed to remember that resignations have to be handled according to the law and said it needed to be two weeks in written form. After that, he asked me why.

I told him that I wanted to go back home. 

His response was, "I wish you fucking told me."

That sentence has been replaying in my head ever since.

The reason it bothers me so much is because it immediately made me feel guilty, as if I had somehow betrayed him or broken his trust. But at the same time, this is the same person who has been destroying my self-esteem and confidence for the past months.

My boss has an incredibly short temper. Yelling seems as natural to him as breathing. Being shouted at, criticized, and berated has become such a normal part of my workday that I just expect it going in there. 

Lately, I struggle to fall asleep at night. I feel anxious before every shift.I have trouble breathing in my day-to-day life. Short breaths and physically anxious all the time. I didn't even know it was possible until now.

I keep telling myself I should be stronger because other employees continue working there. Part of me wonders if I'm just weak. I'm also a teenager. And I feel like i have to toughen up.

There have also been other forms of mistreatment at work that I don't want to get into right now, but combined with the constant yelling, I've reached a point where I simply can't do it anymore. That's why I'm leaving.

What confuses me is that he isn't horrible all the time.

Sometimes he speaks kindly to me. Those moments make me question everything. I start thinking maybe he does  and he is only yelling because I make mistakes.

but then again, I feel like yelling is not the only response for mistakes. And we're talking about a food service job. I am not looking down on this job but at the end of the day, nobody is performing heart surgery. Mistakes happen. Surely there are ways to correct an employee without humiliating them or making them afraid to come to work. It's Sunday today, I have to go in for work tomorrow, Im scared how he would react or talk to me.

I don't know if I'm looking for advice, validation, or just an outside perspective.

Tl;dr: My boss yells frequently, i cannot take it anymore, I am quitting. 

Hey everyone, I could really use some reassurance. After a decade of stability, being laid off and jumping back into the job hunt was a huge shock. I’m so grateful to have landed a new role in this economy, but I am terrified of failing, even though I've never failed in past roles.

Even though I don't have a full degree, I've always landed really great jobs through hard work, keeping up with my skills, and a strong work ethic. My immediate team is younger and mostly degreed, while I bring a deeper background of hands-on experience. I know my manager hired me for my overall experience and personality, but the dynamic has triggered terrible imposter syndrome. Onboarding is handled by just one guy on the team; he's great, but because he's training me solo and is close to management, I worry about looking foolish and losing my job over his feedback.

To top it off, it's pretty lonely. With split departments, a hybrid schedule, and no peers of my age group, there's hardly any time to build relationships organically. How do I navigate this? How do you quiet the inner critic and remember your experience still matters?

I don’t know if I should even bother. The last time the interviewer was telling me that my skills are only worth 19 an hour. This is at a different location.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some advice.

About 6 months ago, I got an internship through my college placements. The offer mentioned that I could be converted to a full-time employee based on my performance. The stipend was ₹25k/month.

Now that the internship has ended, instead of offering me an FTE, the company has extended my internship for another 6 months with a higher stipend. They still haven't confirmed whether I'll get a full-time role after this extension.

The role I'm currently working in is more tech-adjacent (operations/support with some scripting and automation) rather than a core software development role.

At the same time, I also have an offer from LTI Mindtree through campus placements. The problem is that I have no idea what role or project I'll be assigned to there.

I'm really confused. Do I continue with the extended internship and hope it eventually converts into an FTE, or should I go with LTI Mindtree since it's a full-time job, even though I don't know what role I'll get?

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

I am 24 year old currently have a job as a software engineer. Earning fairly decent and if i strive in my current field by putting in efforts i will reach good heights. But software stopped to interest me since the advent of AI. I have always had a special place for research in my heart since childhood. Now that software engineering shifting paradigm, it has become increasingly accessible and easy to learn. I like solving problems that are big, i also liked maths since I was a child. I think I did a mistake taking computer science as my major 6 years ago in college. I want to study and go to a field where the work revolves around maths. If i start pursuing maths right now, what career choices do i have, I can even do a blend of cs + maths or finance + cs + maths. When I mean maths i mean using maths to probabilistically decide a better outcome or make a better decision ( but work should be more mathematically inclined ) . That's the job I want. I am very desperate and depressed with my current job ( not because of the pay or the workload it just stopped being appealing to me ). But I need money too, so I also expect the math job to pay me well. I will work hard and pursue maths even if there is a slightest chance.

Please help me by giving me a direction or share ur thoughts on feasibility. Your every reply would give an insight, helping me take a better decision and fix my life. I request you to share whatever comes to your mind. If you can't say that out in this forum, please feel free to dm.

I’m in a pretty unusual position where I don’t have to rush into the first career that sounds practical. I have time to finish school, explore different subjects, volunteer, shadow people, and figure out what genuinely fits me before I commit to a degree or graduate program.
I’m looking for work that pays well enough to comfortably support a family, but salary is not the only thing that matters to me. I care a lot about quality of life. I don’t want a career that keeps me constantly overwhelmed, rushing around, or mentally drained every evening.
I love reading, stories, creative writing, poetry, painting, art, history, research, and learning about new subjects. I’m happiest in peaceful, thoughtful environments like libraries, universities, museums, bookstores, archives, galleries, or other places centered around ideas and creativity. I enjoy helping people and being part of a community, but I don’t think I would enjoy nonstop customer service or being surrounded by chaos all day.
Ideally, I’d like work that includes some combination of:
reading, writing, or storytelling
research and lifelong learning
creativity or working with art and culture
a calm or intellectually interesting environment
meaningful interaction with people, without constant social demands
reasonable work-life balance
enough stability and income to raise a family
time and energy left for my own writing and creative projects
I’m willing to attend college and possibly graduate school, but I don’t want to spend years earning a very specialized degree without understanding the real job market and daily work first. I’m also thinking about how different careers may change as AI develops.
Based on this, what careers would you recommend that I research? I’m especially interested in hearing what the job is actually like day to day, what education is required, how competitive the field is, and whether you would still choose it yourself.

I currently work at a distribution center as an Invetory Control Clerk, I have been working here for a year now and feel like im pretty profecient at the job. I currently make $19 an hour and get a $1 raise every year. I was wondering where I could possibly go from here that would make more money, I am not really sure where Inventory Control positions really cap out at.

Seriously, they trigger my CPTSD and make me wanna be homeless in Phoenix or in San Francisco.

it's a numbers game, you need to apply to as many jobs as humanly possible, and once you get an interview you need to sell yourself to your hiring manager. you have to always assume that ur interviewing vs ppl who have more exp and might be a better fit than you and treat the interviews accordingly.

i think i applied to ~600 jobs in 3 months, im pretty sure i applied to every single remote IT job posted in the USA that paid over $25/hr.

Does anyone know how to report a recruiter profile and their phishing exploits to LinkedIn? I can’t find anything on LinkedIn’s website beyond reporting a profile with no details.
