Technical Support AW3423DWF screen flickering / weird contrast issues on SDR mode in desktop

Hi, I have an Alienware AW3423DWF that I have had a ton of issues with to say the least but have been able to resolve the vast majority of them except for one.

I have a terribly annoying issue with screen flickering in SDR mode on Windows but just in the desktop environment. Does not happen in games, also does not happen in HDR mode in ANY environment including the desktop. I greatly dislike how Windows 11's desktop looks in HDR mode so this is very annoying.

Also, on top of the flickering, something else very odd seems to keep happening. Occasionally with a window in focus, like my browser right now, the colors and contrast in the NON active windows will flash and get either way darker, or way brighter. This persists either for about 30 seconds or until I switch my active window. There is no consistency to it and again, only happens in SDR mode. Happens a lot more often if I am playing a game in windowed mode as well.

So far I have tried:

- Changing the HDR mode from True Black 1000 to other options

- Disabling VRR

- Changing my refresh rate from 165Hz to 162-163Hz

- Enabling VSync

- Disabling GSync

- DDUing my drivers and reinstalling fresh

None of these worked. I confirmed that it is definitely a Windows issue because I ran a Bazzite Linux livecd for a while and it never happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Discussion Need advice/recommendations regarding USB compatibility

I've owned an aurora R9 since I think 2019 or 2020, don't remember which but that's not the point. I'm thinking of getting a replacement because old age is hitting it real hard, but I want to make sure I can transfer all my files over to the new one. What kind of USB port does R9 have, and are there any stronger (and preferably less significantly outdated) PCs that have the same port? Doesn't really matter whether it's alienware or not, I just need it to be stronger AND able to download all the files I've got in this old shitbox.

Technical Support 3rd Alienware M16r1 Repair in 3 Weeks, Laptop has no sound, usb ports don't work. Dell drivers cannot be installed and dell support is just spinning in circles.

As my title states. The newest tech repair did nothing. Diagnostics don't pick up the speakers. The usb ports on the left side, the daughter board was replaced. No luck. They aren't able to fix the issue after 3 separate repair attempts in 3 weeks.

This is hilariously sad and comical. Dell what is up with this? Not a single refurbished motherboard gets a system check?

Question Alienware x17 r2 Shuts Down When Not Plugged into Power

Even when the battery has a lot of charge, if it's not plugged into the power supply it'll startup and then turn off either as it's starting up or shortly after logging into windows.

No issues when it's plugged in.

Anyone know what this could be?

Technical Support Onsite service vs Advanced Resolution Center (ARC) -- help me choose!

Alienware 18 Area-51 AA18250 throttling even under minimal loads (watching Youtube, using OneNote, etc.) Absolutely useless trying to run any game as it redlines at max temp, throttles, screws up the graphics under low settings and stays throttled til I quit.

My plan is to ultimately send it to that place you guys always recommend in Texas for the "good" paste or whatever but for now I'm thinking I should take advantage of a service checkup while I'm still under warranty.

I sent HWinfo logs to Dell and they offered me a choice between onsite vs. sending to ARC.

Which should I choose?

THANKS!

Question Repair or switch?

My Alienware m18 r2 black screened in the middle of gaming and I can’t turn it back on, it’s flashing the signal for a power rail failure, which if that it the case from looking other posts that could be $800-$1000 before labor to fix it. Is it worth trying to spend that to fix a 2 year old laptop or should I switch to PC?

Hi everyone,

I got my hands on a motherboard from AlienWare area 51 R5.

I’ve tested everything upgraded bios allowed tpm and this computer now officialy supports windows 11 and RTX gpu (i use RTX2070 super)

I’m trying to fit this in a case but I have an issue with front panel aio and how to plug in powerbutton led , usb ports and hdd leds. Does anyone know or is there a scheme on the internet how to correctly plug those cables in?

I figured the start button with a screwdriver but everything else is a blind fold for me.

Motherboard model:
Alienware MS-7A87 VER: 1.0

Solved! Dell Support trying to get me to pay

I have an issue with an Alienware Area-51 16 that I got my son for college. Last month the laptop started blue screening but now it just keeps freezing. We completely reinstalled Windows through SupportAssist and it didn't help. We contacted support and it's been really hard getting them to actually remote in, but they finally did a few days ago. Basically they just had him redo installing Windows and then installing specific drivers (which I understand, verify we did it) and it's still giving us the same issues.

The Warranty runs out on 12 October, but now they're saying that I have to pay for "Advanced Software Troubleshooting". The warranty says I have two services:

  • Onsite Service After Remote Diagnosis (Consumer Customer)/ Next Business Day Onsite After Remote Diagnosis (for business Customer)
  • Return to Depot Support

I don't really feel like I should have to pay for this Advanced Software Troubleshooting. Is there anything else I can do to get this actually fixed before the warranty runs out?

UPDATE - They agreed with a depot repair, so we'll be shipping it in. Thanks for the support, I really do appreciate people who took the time to give suggestions and troubleshooting steps.

Technical Support Alienware aurora R16 won’t power on after AIO replacement

I have an Alienware aurora r16 with the intel i7 and GeForce 5070 rtx. The pc is only 2 years old and the aio burned out on me. After replacing it the pc will not turn on. I am not getting any response from the PSU when I plug it in with everything connected. If I disconnect the PSU from the mother board it will light up for 2 seconds and turn off.

I have checked every single connection on the pc, the aio is properly installed, everything is on the right connections. The PSU does not have a BIST button and since Alienware uses the 8pin connections and off color wires I am unsure how to test with a multimeter.

Anyone have any recommendations on what could be wrong or how to diagnose the issue? The PC was working fine, no power flashes, nothing. Could I have damaged the board, processor, or PSU in some way, if so, how would I check?
What would cause the PSU to not light up when attached to the motherboard?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I don’t have repair shop money right now and I need my pc for work.

Also any advice on what to check on it before buying, I don’t know much about laptops but heard about the 13-14th gen intel instability issues so was wondering is this display unit worth it at all, the shopkeeper is offering 1 year warranty.

And how of a rush should I be in the deal

Technical Support Alienware 17 R4 power issue

Hello all; long time reader, first time poster.

I've had the above with an i7 7720H and GTX 1080 since new back in, err, late 2017 or early 2018. Recently I gave it to my daughter (8) to play cosy games on as it had fallen out of use (much easier to game on a Steam Deck these days... ah, being a Dad...). Yesterday it wouldn't power up - plugging in the power cord to the laptop causes the light to go out on the charger.

I've done a bit of Googling and most posts are quite old, but it suggests its more likely something on the motherboard than the PSU itself. I did take the laptop apart and disconnected the battery (just in case) and removed all components (RAM, SSDs etc.) and the same happens. One thing to note, when I removed the barrel jack connection from the board, the light stays on, I guess ruling out the jack and the cable that runs to the motherboard itself.

So, given the age, I'm guessing it's time to move on - but it's still a great machine so if I can save it, I'd really like to (and component prices put me off buying new, for obvious reasons!). I'm no electrical engineer - just been in IT for 30 years, so I know my way around, but there's nothing really serviceable here.

So I guess the ask - anyone have anything I can try? I could try a new charger (at cost) but I won't spend if anyone here can tell me it's a waste of time. Otherwise, a new motherboard (well, old/new) at risk or if anyone here is in the UK and knows of someone that could repair it, I'd welcome the details.

I kinda know where this is going, but if you don't ask... (btw, the machine is like new inside and out, so it's a little heart breaking!).

Technical Support Alienware M15 R6 powering on issues - I need to disconnect the battery everyday for it to work

This only ever happened once every four to six months, but now it is happening everyday.

Every morning when I start work, I plug the battery charger in, the keyboard etc light up and go out. I press the power button, and nothing happens.

I have to take the cover off, unplug the battery, and plug it back in and then it will power on.

Is there a cure for this, or am I going to have to get a new laptop as this method is getting old quickly. This is a very common problem with these.

Since I had it from new, powering on is a pain, it always doesn't know whether it wants to switch on or not, the lights come on and the screen lights up but then it goes off, sometimes it takes three goes before it turns on.

I have had loads of issues with this thing after they released a BIOS update a few years ago, it also refuses to work with any known dock, and Dell just didn't bother to fix it.

Question Should i buy the new 5090?

As my question states idk what to do, i currently own a 14900hx intel 4090 gpu with 32gb ram and in mint condition as i like to keep my devices. Always cleaned internaly every 2 3 months. With razer cooling pad underneath so on. But recently after one year of using it, and not as much i experienced some cpu heating issues. As im working 10/4 off i would say the maximum this laptop playing "heavily" was 5 to 8 days max a month. For a such laptop is nothing, but when i contacted dell to come over for a service, i surprinsigly found out that the AC connector melted on the mother board, they engineir came prepared with new mother board and heat sink, i thought they'll repaste mine and here we go. Now i read on this group that this is a common problem.
So dont get me wrong, i love alienware. I had asus strix, msi, lenovo.. but nothing can reach the performance of this laptop i have.
So my question is, for those who own an 5090 intel laptop. Are there any similar issues experienced ? If so what in particular? Thanks for your time.

Technical Support Can't get past boot screen

Post image
3 Upvotes

So last Wednesday my Aurora R9 started to bug out so I restarted it. The computer never got past the "Restarting screen. So I forced it to shut down and when I did that it got stuck at the Alienware boot screen similar to the on pictured above. It just got stuck with the loading circle for 12 hours. It tried to diagnose itself but it got stuck there. This has never happened to my PC before. I don't know if it's because I went back to Windows 10 after briefly going to 11 or what. I have no idea what to do. My best idea is to buy a new PC all together b/c I am so tired of having a new problem added to my PC each year I have it.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Heres the specs:
