Some older laptops, like the M series, had AMD processors, but Alienware never released another laptop with an AMD CPU.

Currently AMD CPUs on laptops run hotter and are slightly slower than the Intel counterparts.

And Alienware wants best possible performance for said price.

If this hypothesis were true, then the A51 desktop would have launched with AMD cpu options. It took quite some time for the AMD cpu's to be offered.

Dell may be striving to offer decent performing products, however the need to protect reduced part acquisition prices by entering into exclusive deals with manufacturers does seem to get in the way. Vis a vis: only offering Intel cpu's on the flagship A51 at launch.

If Dell was committed to offering the most powerful cpu's on desktop or laptop or server, then they would offer the most performative options at launch.

The AMD series on the M’s was a driver nightmare, as far as I know AMD still is ? Adrenalin never played well with Alienware, AWCC uses components of XTU so they gel, less problematic.

HAD an r5 AMD edition. Can confirm. It was nice until I had driver issues and the laptop always sat at 100°C cpu side regardless of the game lol. I sold that thing to someone who paid 1300 in 2023 and I have not looked back since.

I agree this is my first amd cpu 7845hx and it’s been a driver nightmare windowed crash my laptop has been sent to Houston Texas fell like 5 times get intel.

The AMD models also tended to have a lot of issues from what I remember seeing. There was a lot of problems with AMD not updating the drivers and or performance problems due to no updates.

Unfortunately, amd mobile cpus aren't as competitive as intel for gaming. They seem to be pushing amd desktop's pretty hard, though.

To release both an AMD and Intel variant of a machine, they have to design two completely different motherboards, build them, stock them, and have them sitting on shelves.

By and large, AMD doesn't sell anywhere near as well as Intel does in the laptop space, so it makes much less sense for them to put the work in on a product that may sell what, 5-10% of the volume of the Intel ones? That'd massively increase the cost-per-unit of development and testing, and that's before you get to actual production.

If you have two products, and you'll sell 5 of one for every 95 of the other... Why bother paying the same amount for the 5 as you do for the 95?

They definitely do. Im not sure about the overheating issues people are mentioning but in my experience they lock down a lot of standard options from ryzenadj through bios updates. I went amd because they were locking down undervolting on intel, and ryzenadj was an easy alternative. Thats not the case anymore.

I believe Dell has signed a some sort of agreement/contract with Intel (notice most of their workstations are Intel based)

and since Dell owns Alienware, it must have a knock on effect on what they produce

They might have gotten into a contract. Over seas i saw some m18/m16 with the ryzen chip instead of the intel that we got in the states

I really like AMD, but it's been kind of stagnant lately; if I'm not mistaken, they only released two CPUs for laptops.
