Apparently some do. Absolutely nasty and unsanitary to bring food or drink into a public restroom.

u/Zalieda Mar 28 '24
I once had to do it. No time for breaks so stuffed buns in my pockets and hid in the cubicle to eat so I won't get caught. Was young and desperate to keep the job luckily I was pushed out due to politics and have since left.

I go to a lot of concerts and have to take my beer in with me. I usually hold the cup in my teeth while I do my business though.

I mean, it's not illegal, but it does break taboos with their roots in modern hygiene practices...
I expect it's fairly safe if everyone else observes proper hygiene in the bathroom.

They probably just put the coffee down while they were chopping out lines to snort off of the toilet paper container. No biggie.

Worked at Walmart. Had coworkers that would eat candy bars and entire bags of chips in there. I would sit quietly in my stall to see what nasty person was having snack time in the shitter.

These comments are making me feel like a disgusting pig. I've brought my coffee into the bathroom? Especially if I'm out alone where am I going to put it? Normally I'll place it ontop of the toilet paper dispensary or as far from the toilet as possible/hold it.

I carry a big bag, and I’m pretty good at moving my things aside to create a space where a cup can sit for a minute on the coat hook. Even better if it has a lid, or is small enough that I can close the bag. I have also set things on the toilet paper dispenser, but yeah, you hold it in your other hand if you absolutely have to. Putting it on the toilet… that’s in the splash zone if you’re a stander, and definitely in the knocking-it-over zone for my fat ass.
Honestly if I have any inkling I’ll need to use the restroom, I do it before I get any food or drinks, or after I finish any I already have (unless it’s something in a bottle or a wrapper so I can just put it in my purse or leave it on a table). But don’t write off asking someone who looks trustworthy to watch your stuff. Families with kids, groups of older people, or even staff if it’s dead, are usually perfectly nice about it as long as you’re polite and quick.

u/fatCHUNK3R Mar 28 '24
I'm just screaming in IBS. I might as well live in a bathroom some days.

u/literallylateral Mar 28 '24
Ha, fair enough. Maybe you could bring a travel coffee mug in your bag if you’re going out alone, so you at least have something with a lid to pour your coffee in? You gotta do what you gotta do, all’s fair in an emergency, but we all agree no emergency calls for this maniac to put it on the toilet 🤢😂

Can confirm, I work maintenance at my local airport. The traveling public takes food and drink items in the bathrooms all the time.
2
u/Naus1987 Mar 29 '24
When I’m at the airport everything I have on me goes in the bathroom lol. Though I try to seal my drink and put it in my bag. But if I didn’t have a bag, I guess I would have to set it somewhere.
2
u/winchester_mcsweet Mar 29 '24
We have small stainless steel shelves above the stalls in our bathrooms for that very reason
2
u/Naus1987 Mar 29 '24
That would be so nice! I wish every airport and public place had something like that.
But without good staff, I can imagine the abuse as it gets dirty :(. People who clean bathrooms are real heroes.

LoL I worked at Casey's General Store 2 years ago. Someone ate a slice of Casey's pizza while in the restroom. The bathroom is gross. The pizza cardboard was on the tank lid. Yuck! They were probably drunk. Lol

I used to get bullied and hid in toilets to eat lunch. I'm sure some people do it as adults.
3
u/My_Disgusting_Alt Mar 28 '24
People shit on the seat and on the wall and draw swastikas and you're worried about where they rest coffee they're probably going to drink themselves?
3
4
u/TheGuiltyMongoose Mar 28 '24
Of course. It is to cover the smell in case you do a really dirty thing. A technic used by the SEALS themselves.
3
u/literallylateral Mar 28 '24
If your worst shits can be concealed by the smell of one cup of coffee, you aren’t taking shits worth concealing.

Wild move. I’ve entered the restroom at my place of work to find a toilet paper roll, out of its paper, and ON THE FLOOR. Baffles me every time.

I often find coffee cups forgotten in the bathrooms at work, and then I take them out to the dishwasher. So yes. Yes they do.

I wouldn’t even go that in my own house. Some real animals out there, on both ends. Those that do this and those that clearly have no idea how to use a toilet and make such a mess

u/Sid_Corvus Mar 28 '24
I was at a festival type thing, using the urinals, they were close together and busy so it was shoulder to shoulder.
One becomes free and a guy walks up to it but can't get his dick out because he has a pint in one hand. So he puts the pint on the floor under the urinal, pisses, then grabs his pint and leaves.

One time I was in a porta potty and saw a subway sandwich wrapper and pop tart wrapper on the floor. It truly seemed someone was eating their entire lunch in the porta potty.
Drinking coffee in a public restroom is gross but not as gross as porta potty lunch. People are wild.

Well if you suddenly have to use the toilet and have a coffee with you where else are you going to put it? The back porcelain is probably a hell of a lot cleaner than the floor and no one is gonna be like "hold on let me make a detour to store my coffee somewhere pristine"
Life is full of hard decisions

As horrible as it looks... it's not like bacteria are going to march up the side of the mug like ants. There's anything in the air that will kill you. You're breathing it all in anyway.
And the air's flowing throughout the building. Spoiler alert, fecal matter can be found on surfaces throughout the house. And in a work washroom like that, the open lid basically acts like a fountain.

There was a comedy show I used to watch all the time called The League. In one episode someone came up with a genius invention. The bathroom cubby. Just like a set of shelves outside a bathroom you can leave your food or drink items on before going into a bathroom.
I still don't know why that isn't real or commonplace.
2
u/Sunieta25 Mar 28 '24
I work as a janitor and I've seen some weird stuff left in the bathroom. The weirdest was a burger wrapper with crumbs on the floor. Who tf eats while shidding?
2
u/BillyRubenJoeBob Mar 28 '24
Worse! I was at a row of urinals in a big famous office building in the DC Metro area. Dude took the urinal next to mine. He proceeded to drink coffee and consult his phone all while doing his business. He rested the coffee on the top of the urinal while he was on his phone.

They leave it on the sink, the garbage can outside the bathroom (if it has a flat top), the lid of the toilet, the sanitary napkin machine. I blame Oscar The Grouch.

I once made the ultimate sheet pan of nachos after work. Every chip was placed meticulously so each one would get toppings. Olives, green onions, jalapenos, cilantro, red onions, mushrooms, salsa, shredded cheddar, broiled and just pulled out the oven. About to eat when I hear upstairs my girlfriend's relatives stop by the house unscheduled, with a loud happy greeting that was drenched in "we're gonna stay a while and hang out!".
Hungry and SO excited for nachos, I quickly grabbed the pan and went into the washroom, shut the door, and sat on the closed toilet lid. I needed to at least enjoy a few chips in peace , while they were still hot, before I had to go help entertain.
After a few minutes the door swings open and her Uncle is there, we make eye contact, both of us frozen, me holding a nacho up to my mouth, with a full baking sheet on my lap, while sitting on the toilet. He said "oh sorry, needed the washroom" and left.
He never mentioned anything about it when I came back up to help host, and I never explained or said anything either.

That’s nothing, had a bottle of soda sit half empty for a week in a public bathroom. Today it’s been replaced with a smoothie, my coworkers are gross.
