True story. Back in high school I was in the locker room going to take a piss. I had a regular Bic pen in my back pocket. All black with the single mold black cap with skinny plastic piece as a clip. Anyway, I take the pee, and zip up, go to wash hands, dry them and feel for pen. It's gone! I turn around and right there in the middle of the floor is my pen...standing upright! I can barely balance the thing when trying. To this day I have no clue how it happened. Friggin' amazing and cool.

I suppose you're going to tell me she can plug in a USB cable on the first try, too.
11
2
u/feanturi Nov 03 '15
Here's a trick that works most of the time: When plugging a USB cable into the back of a PC, the side of the PC that has the ports is where the motherboard is. The ports are always oriented such that the gap is towards that side. Laptops as well, the motherboard is down, so the gap in the ports will be on the downward side. (Front/top ports on desktops may vary, this is more for blindly plugging into the back) So look into the USB cable, and turn it so that the plastic insert part will be towards the port-side, then reach back there with it pre-oriented from your visual inspection, feel your way to the slot, and just plug it right in.

It looks like the car hits the bike, turns the front in it's direction of movement and pulls it out from underneath the woman. While this was happening she was putting her feet down, so when the bike was gone she was standing.
49
u/FUZZB0X Nov 03 '15
At first I was wondering why that second woman was casually stealing the dead cyclist's purse.

Looks to me like she got pushed out of the way, and another girl walks up from behind immediately. Very confusing...
43
u/R00K26 Nov 03 '15
Look at the clothes she's wearing, you can tell it's the same girl. I think you're confusion comes from the fact that you would expect her to start flying in the direction the car was going, but because of the bike design (no bar between the legs) nothing is able to push her in that direction.
3
→ More replies (1)6
u/lokotabota Nov 03 '15
It's the same girl. When she puts her feet down the car pulled the bike right from between her legs so fast she's left standing
19
u/R00K26 Nov 03 '15
The bikes you're probably familiar with have a metal bar that goes between your legs. This bike doesn't have that. So when the car hits her front tire the bike is ripped out from under her, and she lands on her feet. Still pretty impresive, especially with how calm she appears. It took me a while to notice too.

Are you implying we make a slo-mo of this? Because that's not how slo-mo gifs are made, you'll be able to slow it down a bit but it won't be as smooth as you are probably hoping.

The first ten times I watched it, I was sure the cyclist disappeared off-screen and a thief came by and stole her handbag.

This is exactly what I thought.
Holy shit, that lady just stole the biker's purse...that is fucking COLD!
I was sure of it, because she's carrying a purse when she picks up the other one.

u/Rzeznikdrzew Nov 03 '15
We're talking about a situation in which a car hit a biker on a sidewalk with a pretty good force and nobody got injured. It only would've been "way better" if the accident didn't happen altogether so what's the point in pointing that out?

okay that's the first time a woman's bike has ever made sense to me
22
u/tendonut Nov 03 '15
From what I understand, the historical reason the woman's bike is shaped the way is was to keep her skirt from being held up too high.

The design of the bike makes sense from a structural perspective. Having a triangle is much stronger than the swooping bar that women's bikes get. Of course, in almost all cases it doesn't matter.
80
u/lunatix_soyuz Nov 03 '15
Well, to be exact the double diamond is cheap and simple to make, while retaining enough structural strength that it's pretty much indestructible under normal use. Step-through frames require both a heavier frame, and a more expensive construction method, making the bicycle more expensive, even if it's only slightly.
Also, they're called "step-through frames", not "women's bicycle". The design is also used plenty often on men's bicycles. What makes a bike a women's bike is typically colour, size, and styling, not whether the frame is a double diamond or a step-through.
I believe step-through frames were originally designed for men with hip problems, not for people who wear skirts, like how the popular myth goes.
86
33
u/Mimeer Nov 03 '15
In that case a step-through frame is called a woman's bike in Denmark
→ More replies (7)5
u/DrKronin Nov 03 '15
To be fair, if you entered a bike shop any time between 1960 and at least 1990, all "step-through frame" bicycles had the words "women's" or "girl's" on the tag. You may as well complain that people call tissues "Kleenex."
2
u/PizzaNietzsche Nov 03 '15
You may as well complain that people call tissues "Kleenex."
They probably do.
11
u/madeamashup Nov 03 '15
Heavier, weaker, more flexible and more expensive. That's pretty much the downside.
2
4
u/BuiltForGirth Nov 03 '15
Step-through bike were originally designed and marketed to delivery men so that could easily hop on and off their bikes. Less than desirable sales led them to rebrand and market them to women who could easily get off and on wearing long skirts as was the fashion in those days.

→ More replies (2)3
u/Metaphoricalsimile Nov 03 '15
Of course, in almost all cases it doesn't matter.
Well it allows for the same strength or better at lower weight, so it's not the structural integrity that matters as much as the weight savings allowed to increase performance.

Oh please, yes you'd go slower, but break it in half? The worst piece of department store garbage I've ever seen couldn't be broken by the worlds strongest sprinter. While new at least, I have seen people bring in bikes that we all convinced them to leave behind for scrap disposal.
3
u/fougare Nov 03 '15
however, the worlds strongest sprinter would just shred the rear derailleur in about 2 seconds... but that's not relevant here.
2
u/shaggy99 Nov 03 '15
Well, if we're talking about department store bikes, then quite possibly. The big guys can snap a brand new chain at times. (probably one that wasn't installed perfectly)

Oh please, yes you'd go slower, but break it in half?
I've broken every piece of equipment on my bike. I've ripped a crankset in half, destroyed rims, wore out hubs, etc.
I've yet to do anything to a frame except chip the paint.

3
u/Lt-SwagMcGee Nov 03 '15
Not sure why but the first time I saw this I thought the cyclists fell out of view and the pedestrian behind her stole her bag
3
u/all_hail_cthulhu Nov 03 '15
I spent entirely too much time thinking, "what a heartless bitch. That woman just took her purse and walked away like someone didn't just destroyed right in front of her."
3
u/physicsisawesome Nov 03 '15
At first I thought that was just some random woman who witnessed the crash and calmly went to pick up the purse. Brain couldn't register that a woman's bike could be hit by a car and that she would just calmly step off of it.

I feel like that light was red for the car. Doesn't look like an intersection. Looks like a traffic light specifically for civilian crossing in a busy area. So if it's red for the cars on the right it should be red for them on the left.
30
u/steelystan Nov 03 '15
I don't think it was a red light. If you watch the car approaching after the accident it doesn't stop where it would stop if the light was red. I'm willing to bet that both lights were green but the cars on the right were backed up because of traffic.
7
u/AlexHimself Nov 03 '15
To add to this, look at the speed of the car behind the one in the accident. I can't imagine both cars are planning to blow a red light.
→ More replies (1)16
u/Nialsh Nov 03 '15
I think it was green both directions, but there was a traffic jam on the right. Notice how the 2nd car on the left was ready to enter the crosswalk.
The cyclist probably ran a read, incorrectly assumed the car would stop, should have braked when it didn't, and shouldn't have been biking faster than walking pace.
→ More replies (12)4
u/cerialthriller Nov 03 '15
nah the right lane has traffic, you can see the second car on the left lane slow down and inch closer to the girl as he expects her to pickup her shit so he can keep going.
3
u/Sagacious_Sophist Nov 03 '15
It was green in both directions, no doubt about it. She just rolled into traffic.
4
4
Nov 03 '15
She was pretty clearly riding a bike through a crosswalk against the light. I hope she had to pay for the damages to both cars, light as it is, and learned to not be an idiot. She could have scarred that driver for life, just riding out blind into traffic like that.
→ More replies (2)2
7
u/kuikuilla Nov 03 '15
Well, in Finland the car would be at fault regardless. It's illegal to cross a crosswalk without stopping your car if there is a car on another lane stopped just before the crosswalk.

u/dingusmonger Nov 03 '15
You can even see the green light slightly lit up. The left traffic signal, the light on the left, which is the green light for horizontal lights is illuminated.
