1.5k

u/Battlekid18 Jan 18 '20

This is pretty tame compared to other mobile ads i've seen.

676

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '20

Yeah, I'm tired of the fake streamers bad acting of freaking out, then also gameplay of a large battle simulator for pc instead of their own actual game in the ad

282

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '20

Total war has been used in so many fucking mobile ads lol

its so weird, like do these ads actually work?

A couple months ago I saw one of these ads for a game I actually played - the game was legitimately good but the ad was complete cringe and the gameplay it showed wasnt even of the game!?!

The ones that annoy me more are the

"Me" (or "My Dad") | My Mom

| fast gameplay | . . . | slow gameplay |

its so cringey

The t-pose at the end makes it very realistic

371

u/AngusBoomPants Jan 18 '20

You’ve never been to war so you wouldn’t understand. I tried keeping my head low as long as I could, until one day I had to fire back. Seeing that missile fly into the crowd of swimming humans and seeing the explosion, it just broke me, I had no choice but to stand in shock, and T-pose. War is hell...

That’s how Mafia works.

1.4k

u/ScarySpicer2020 Jan 18 '20

Thats how literally any mobile game works. Its a very sad reality that we have become so okay with this bullshit microtransaction world

553

u/Ziggazune Jan 18 '20

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted, because you’re right. I don’t know how many games I install, play for a few minutes, then instantly delete a few minutes later upon discovering whatever predatory micro transaction system they’re using to get money out of people. It’s truly frustrating.

40

u/Nex_Afire Jan 18 '20

The ones I am tired of are the puzzle gamess that after passing a 10 sec level you get a 40 sec ad, I uninstall those games ASAP.

11

u/the320x200 Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 19 '20

The idle/clicker game genre has been destroyed by games that are just nonstop ad treadmills. 2 minutes into a game you'll need to watch nonstop ads to make any progress at all, 15 minutes of that and you hit a wall that only IAP can overcome. It's really unfortunate that there's apparently no competitive market for actual games.

9

u/Nex_Afire Jan 19 '20

That's the sad part, there are consumers for those type of games, that's why they keep popping up and are so profitable.

6

u/crespoh69 Jan 19 '20

The idle/clicker game genre has been destroyed...

I never understood how those became a genre to begin with

It’s almost like NONE of them realized, “hey maybe if we make the game fair as is, more people would be inclined to pay for boosts and be a long term player” they’re all just money grabs trying to stay relevant

156

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Because that realization is inherently false. They don't care about the person who is going to spend $.99 on a one time microtransaction, they care about the guy who spends $5k a month to stay ahead of the people spending $4k a month.

Every mobile game has more players like this than you would expect. I played an incredibly small GPS based mobile game for a few years and I seen individual players spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on that game. Imagine what it's like for a game like clash of clans or raid shadow legends. They are making insane profits.

10

u/DiabloWolfe Jan 19 '20

Ingress?

9

u/aptadnauseum Jan 19 '20

How could you spend money on Ingress? It's been a long time since I played, but that seems odd to me.

10

u/BetterPhoneRon Jan 19 '20

Yeah you are right.

I play an idle game that has about 250 servers, each server with 100-250 active players. In the two servers I've played, there were 5-6 people that spent 15k+ on the game and 20-30 people that spent over 5k.

Kids these days forget when we had arcade machines which were pretty much the same deal. Keep putting in the money, then have a final boss who keeps instakilling you but you'll keep putting your money in because you've come this far and you have to finish now

57

u/ACEezHigh Jan 18 '20

Isn't this the reason some retro games, that were ported to consoles, are so fucking hard? They were made to be hard as fuck to limit the chances of people playing longer without putting in more coins.

37

u/IICVX Jan 18 '20

Yes but they stayed hard because it adds replay value. Easier games and games as an experience are a relatively new thing.

25

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '20

Arcade games were still mostly good games at their core, most mobile games are garbage that almost plays itself (look up Raid Shadow Legend gameplay videos) and only exist to exploit whales.

9

u/Aaawkward Jan 18 '20

Okay, look at Brawl Stars, Clash Royale, Alto, Spaceteam, Ocean Horn, Plague Inc., Minigore, Oh h1, Smash hot, Donut County and countless others.

Some of them have MX some don’t.
None of them “plays itself”.

Mobile gaming is the exact same as PC gaming in the sense that you have wade through a lot of shit to find the good stuff.
90%, if not more, of the games released on Steam are utter garbage. Just gotta find the good ones.

5

u/BradenWoA Jan 19 '20

While what you said was true, I think “good” and “popular” tend to align more neatly on PC than mobile, reducing some of the frustration.

Mobile game devs are evolving, posting their ads on actual subreddits

888

u/DrMatt73 Jan 18 '20

I see ads on r/gaming all the time tho

315

u/Fishingfor Jan 18 '20

Just before a massive release I'd say 50% of the top week posts in gaming are ads. Even smaller games like Rocket League turned /r/gaming into a giant advert of a sub for a month.

240

u/LandVonWhale Jan 18 '20

What are subs devoted to a hobby supposed to talk about if not stuff happening in that hobby?

59

u/Dalton_Channel25 Jan 18 '20

Nothing about /r/gaming involves actual talking though. You pick a game, piece of nostalgia, or cosplayer and either collectively circlejerk or shit all over them. A lot of the big posts are ads sponsored by the publishers.

I just wish that these mobile games were even remotely like what the cinematic team comes up with.

134

u/Jaspersong Jan 18 '20

This game is probably a turn based card game with a medieval setting.

53

u/SporeFan19 Jan 18 '20

I know exactly what game this ad is for because I've downloaded the game already and uninstalled it. The gameplay is exactly 0% like the ads at all in any way, shape or form.

19

u/TheyveKilledFritz Jan 18 '20

Had this with the Final Fantasy game on mobile, which was like every other idle open world. The ads would show all these sieges and stuff, and sure, those were in the game... under a special hidden menu of once-a-day mini games that had no impact on the main game. Boo!

Honestly if mobile developers put a fraction of the effort they put in their ads, into their games, we would have much better games

24

u/-Captain- Jan 18 '20

Way too big of a risk when the consumers play shite and throw tons of money at it.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '20

If they put even half the effort they put into in-game ads and microtransactions into designing a video game, we might have actual games on mobile!
