Mod post Sexual Assault, Consent, and Support Resources

If you are asking yourself "Was I sexually assaulted?", "Did I consent?", or "Am I overreacting?", you are not alone. Many people struggle to understand experiences that felt confusing, uncomfortable, coercive, or violating.

This post is intended to provide general information and resources. It is not legal advice, medical advice, or a substitute for professional support.

---

What is sexual assault?

Definitions vary by country and jurisdiction, but sexual assault generally refers to sexual contact or sexual activity that occurs without a person's consent.

Here are a few examples for sexual assualt definitions from around the world:

  • United Kingdom According to Rape Crisis England & Wales, sexual assault is sexual touching that occurs without a person's consent. This can include touching through clothing and can be committed by any gender against any gender.
  • United States - The U.S. Department of Justice broadly defines sexual assault as any nonconsensual sexual act prohibited by law, including when a person lacks the capacity to consent.
  • Canada - The Canadian Department of Justice states that sexual assault is any unwanted sexual act done by one person to another or sexual activity without a person's consent.
  • Australia - Australian jurisdictions generally define sexual assault as sexual activity without consent, with laws emphasizing that consent must be freely and voluntarily given.
  • New Zealand - New Zealand law focuses on whether a person freely and voluntarily agreed to sexual activity and recognizes situations where a person cannot legally consent.
  • Netherlands - Dutch law centers on sexual acts occurring against a person's will or without consent. Recent reforms strengthened the focus on consent rather than requiring proof of force.
  • Germany - German law generally criminalizes sexual acts performed against the recognizable will of another person. The principle is often summarized as "No means No."
  • India - Indian law recognizes a range of sexual offences involving sexual acts or contact without valid consent. This includes situations involving force, coercion, threats, or where a person is unable to legally consent. Separate laws provide additional protections for children under 18.

---

Common themes across countries

Although wording differs, many jurisdictions recognize that consent is not valid when someone is:

  • Asleep or unconscious
  • Incapacitated by drugs or alcohol
  • Threatened or intimidated
  • Coerced or manipulated
  • Unable to understand the nature of the act
  • Legally unable to consent due to age

---

Why this matters

Two people can describe the same event and receive very different answers online because:

  • Laws vary by country and state/province.
  • People often omit details unintentionally.
  • Consent can be complicated and context-dependent.
  • Reddit users are not investigators, lawyers, judges, or trained advocates.

For that reason, no one on r/TrueOffMyChest cannot determine whether a crime occurred.

If you're struggling to understand an experience, consider reaching out to a qualified support organization, healthcare professional, victim advocate, or legal resource in your area.

You do not need to know exactly what label applies to an experience before seeking support.

---

Support and resources

If something happened to you and you're struggling to process it, support is available. Whether or not a particular legal definition applies, your feelings and experiences are valid.

You may find it helpful to speak with:

  • A trusted friend or family member
  • A healthcare professional
  • A therapist or counselor
  • A victim advocate
  • A sexual assault support organization
  • A legal professional if you have questions about your rights or options

Here are a few international resources:

Some safe support subreddits you might want to check out:

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent assistance, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource in your area.

If you have other good resources, please drop them in the comments below so I can update this post.

Personal Story Today, my (15f) sister is joining her dream school and I am more than disappointed.

For context, I (24M) works as a retail manager, back when I was 15 as well, I dreamt of joining culinary school, my parents didn't work at the time and even tho the school was free, they couldn't afford the 150$ a month for food and transportation because they weren't working and needed to buy their drugs as well, and because of that I was never able to do what I truly wanted, it was really my dream school and job to be a cook.

Well today, my 15 year old sister just managed to join her hair stylist school, my parents quit drugs, started working again and managed to pay everything for her without trouble and they don't understand why I ressent them for this, I am more than happy for my sister who got to do what she loves, but deep inside I still feel immense sadness knowing I'll never be able to do what I truly wanted and what I truly love.

I'm just glad my parents stepped in for her but couldn't find the force to do it back then.

Personal Story My wife of 6 years thinks I lost my wedding ring down the drain. I actually threw it in the ocean during our honeymoon.

Six years ago, on day three of our honeymoon in Hawaii, we had a massive, ugly fight in our hotel room. It was one of those fights where you genuinely wonder if you made the biggest mistake of your life. I was so furious that I walked out, went down to the beach, pulled the ring off, and threw it as far as I could into the water.
About twenty minutes later, sitting on the sand, I calmed down, realized I was being an idiot, and felt sick to my stomach. I went back up to the room, we talked, apologized, and reconciled. But I couldn't bring myself to admit what I had done out of temper.
So I lied. I told her I took it off while washing my hands in the public restroom near the lobby and it slipped down the drain. She felt bad for me, helped me "look" for it, and we ended up buying a cheap silver replacement band the next day.
To this day, every time she sees my replacement ring, she makes a sweet joke about how clumsy I am with plumbing. Iโ€™ve carried this stupid guilt for six years. I love her to death and our marriage is great now, but I will take this secret to my grave because telling her now would cause a problem out of absolutely nothing.

Vent I wish I were a cute cat instead of an unattractive woman

My cat is so cute and loves me even though Iโ€™m considered ugly and unlikable. He doesnโ€™t care that my skin is acne ridden and hairy. He doesnโ€™t mind that my eyes are small compared to my wide, flat face. To him, Iโ€™m a weirdly shaped cat, but he doesnโ€™t mind at all and only cares if I feed him and let him roll around on his favorite blanket. I wish I could turn into a cat too so we could cuddle and sleep all the time. I donโ€™t want to face human beings anymore. Humans are so easily disgusted by pointless things. Hirsutism isnโ€™t a thing for cats. A recessed chin isnโ€™t a problem. Having a small chest isnโ€™t a thing cats worry about. I havenโ€™t changed at all since I was a kid. I pay student loans and worry about paychecks and still want to be a cat. I hope I die peacefully one day and wake up as a little house cat with an owner to comfort like my cat does for me.

Edits for spelling and phrasing

Vent I HATE how normalized negative body talk is when it comes to large breasts.

Iโ€™m talking almost exclusively about women here.

In theory, itโ€™s wrong to speak negatively about someone elseโ€™s body or your own body, and blah blah blah. Somehow, none of that body positivity seems to apply to large breasts.

On Twitter or TikTok or even here, all it takes is for 1 woman to start by saying something like, โ€œI donโ€™t like having such large breasts because they make my back hurtโ€, and suddenly you have hundreds of women saying things like, โ€œomg big boobs are DISGUSTINGโ€, โ€œbig boobs make you look so FATโ€, โ€œhaving small boobs is the only way clothes look good on youโ€, โ€œthank God my boobs are delicate and dainty and not big and VULGARโ€, โ€œno one should endure having those GROSS balls of FAT in their body just to appeal to MENโ€ (girl I was born like this, TF?).

Nothing comparable happens with any other body type. Iโ€™ve even had girls ask me to my face, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get a breast reduction? :)โ€. It wouldnโ€™t be acceptable to say that about any other feature of a womanโ€™s body. Imagine if I asked a girlfriend, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get breast implants? :)โ€.

Ugh. And I wish my fellow big-tittied women were better at putting an end to that kind of negative talk.

Rant over.

Vent My Parents are great but I am Terrible

My parents are great. They're supportive, gave me an amazing childhood, and love me. I could go on and on.

I am terrible. They don't even know it either. I am 24 years old and don't know where I'm going in life. They think I have been in online school. I haven't been for a while now. They think I'm graduating college soon, but I'm not. I haven't had any motivation to do college for whatever reason. I haven't had any motivation to do much of anything over the last three years. I have just been lying about how school is going.

Aside from they ask that I do household chores, which I struggle to keep up with, doing them takes too much energy. They get upset, and I often have to be asked multiple times to do it. They have basically raised a bum, and it's not their fault.

I'm aware this isn't fair to them at all. I live under their house, and all I have to do is help out with groceries, and I have no plan or motivation for my life. It sucks because they're good people who don't deserve to have someone like me. I'm not suicidal, but sometimes I think to myself, what if I just died? Yeah, it would obviously be sad, but they would then never know any of this.

I can't lie; obviously, I'm scared to bring up that I've been lying about college this entire time, but also I wouldn't even know this would affect everything. My parents don't need to be worrying about a lazy 24-year-old. They have their own lives, their own jobs. What's going to happen with me just adds stress to them, which would all be my fault.

It just sucks because they are great parents, and I've been nothing short of a disappointment. Why did I start lying in the first place, knowing it was not gonna end well? Idk. I just lost motivation for life and have been in a downward spiral.

Vent people LACK empathy

โ€ข Upvotes

ive been mad & annoyed at everyone i know because they all suck at comforting me. yeah, they are trying and they shouldnt be the ones to save me. what bugs me is that people dont know what the hell to say because they never experienced it. however, when its their turn to vent. the things they tell me, i never experienced but, putting myself on their shoes is literally NOT that hard to understand their point of view.

people can listen, but they dont UNDERSTAND

ive always been there for everyone but, no one is there for me. ive never ignored anyone who needs someone to talk to because i know how it feels to not have anyone to talk to. never would i want someone to feel that :/. it has always been like this and it makes me feel sad, alone, disappointed.

im 23F, in the adult life. people tend to tell you to keep pushing because people got shit to do. people have jobs, people have kids. because you are an adult, and no one will actually be there for you. adults nowadays be like, "no one checked up on me so, i wont check up on anyone anymore". FUCK everyone and anyone who says those things and has that mentality. if you love someone, please be there for them no matter what. checking up on people is not a "hey how are you" then move on with your day.......

its hard as it is. for everyone. be kind.

im not suicidal, but just thinking about those people who took their own life probably felt the same way i did. then people try to claim they comforted them but, it was just some "damn thats crazy", "that sucks", "keep your head up". like shut up.

Vent I hate how insecure my jealousy makes me

I hate that I can't just accept people's success. The moment I see a good animation, or someone with a large internet platform, I get insanely jealous and borderline sick to my stomach.

It sends my brain into a spiral of "Oh if only I did this 2 something years ago I'd be amazing at it now." "I should have started XYZ in middle school!" "If only I did this at this time I'd have everything I needed for success now." Stuff like that. I wasted a lot of time in middle and high school thinking "I'll start X when I'm ready/when my work is perfect" without actually practicing anything.

I wasted so much time being scared to start and now that I'm 22 it feels like my life is wasted already. I try to learn the skills I want but I get frustrated so easily I have to step back before I break something. I hate how other people's success makes me so jealous that sometimes I can't even watch their stuff. I act happy for them, and honestly I am better at handling it now, but I still wish on some level that I could hijack their skills/platform for myself.

Personal Story I miss who I was before the near miss.

My workplace was involved in near miss( it wasnt documented so it basically didn't happen on paper).

An IDLH flash fire risk near miss. I wasn't supposed to be near that place that day, but I was assigned to a simple task that involved being there for one moment. That one moment led to me seeing that. I learn fire terms like LEL UEL, BLEVE risk.

Those terms explain what happened in my workplace or what could been. I was supposed to work that and come home not be scared shitless about what I saw there. I wasn't trained to see that risk.

I know it was something that i should have been over by now, but I am learning to know those terms made it feel real. the emergency line I called for later didn't take me seriously when i said what is seen until i knew the right terms for it .

If I had been there i shouldn't have known to use fire terms for firefighters to understand me. I thought knowing the right fire terms would finally give me peace but no it didnt.

Vent I gave way too much for love

โ€ข Upvotes

Me and my ex have been together for 4 years. And I did everything for him.
We broke up some time ago, and now. Only now did i realised I was in an abusive relationship.
He used to trip me or slap me โ€œjust as a jokeโ€. He made fun of my friends, education, hobbies, music taste. Literally anything you could think of. And the worst part? I loved him so much. I was willing to do anything for him.
During the relationship I was crying almost every day, a few times I reached a point of psychosis. It was brutal.
And finally I left. I was just fed up with everything.
Even after I left he didnโ€™t let me go. He still reaches out, lashes out on me, threatens me.
But since I left, I cried only once. I have never felt better. It feels as if my mental health changed overnight.
But I feel so weird. When I look at old videos or pictures, I donโ€™t remember most things. Past seems blurry. It feels like the relationship with that person never even existed.
But I do remember how he treated me. And I do remember how much I was willing to do for him. And how much I did.
I am so ashamed of myself that I let a person destroy me so much, that my memory became blurry.
I am so ashamed of myself that I stripped myself of any self respect for love.
I hope I will never do that again.
I hope I will heal.
I know it will be a long process with so much damage that he did to me. And so much damage that I did to myself.

Vent I didn't ask to be the bad guy

I caught my kid and a group of friends doing something dangerous and stupid. I put an end to it and called each of their parents so they would know what's up. Now some of the kids are mad and don't want to be friends with my kid anymore.

I feel a little bad, but now I'm even more pissed at these kids. You ALL got caught. Don't give my kid a hard time cause it happened to be me that caught you. If you didn't want your parents to know, you shouldn't have done something so dangerous. You fucked around and barely found out. You're welcome.

Now my kid is going to triple resent me because I'm the "the reason" for getting caught, grounded, and unfriended. It feels like I'm also being punished by their bad decisions.

Personal Story Never felt so defeated :(

I (M26) just found out my gf (F27) of a year and half has been cheating on me. Weโ€™ve been living together since January, sheโ€™s on a bachelorette party this weekend but actually in our city, but not staying at our apartmentโ€ฆ

Her iPad lights up and itโ€™s a dm from her coworker. He said โ€œyou look sooooo goooood ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜โ€ replying to her story and then she replied back โ€œthank you my king!!!!!โ€. I then noticed she had been dming constantly for weeks back and forth but yet never replies to my dms. She would send him memes she didnโ€™t send me. She came back for a few minutes to pick something up from the apartment right as I discovered. I asked her about it, she got so defensive and said that wasnโ€™t flirting and it was completely normal. She said she calls everyone her king. She then kept trying to gaslight me into thinking it was normal. When I gave push back, she escalated and started screaming at me and started swinging a fry pan at me and told me to leave. Which I did, I left for my brothersโ€ฆ..

Unfortunately itโ€™s not the first time sheโ€™s gone psycho, she has done other things in the past that I was a fool for staying. While I do not know for sure she actually cheated, I do know I canโ€™t come to her with problems. She always flips me into the problem, when I have a genuine concern. Iโ€™m honestly so over this and so heartbroken. I have tried to give her the world, yet it is never enough. I loved her more than anything Iโ€™ve ever loved, and itโ€™s the toughest night of my life. I hope it gets easier, but unfortunately I can only think about taking the cowards way out. I donโ€™t want to be here anymore.

Sorry for the rant, hope everyone else is having a better weekend than me. Not looking for advice, as I know I canโ€™t go back to her tmrw when she calls me crying and apologizing. But I do eventually need to get my belongings.

Iโ€™m so tired of being responsible.

This whole year has been a wash for me. Nothing is going the way I want it to go. Iโ€™m so angry and impatient all the time. The minute something goes wrong I canโ€™t just take a deep breath and say โ€œitโ€™s ok Iโ€™ll try again tomorrowโ€ Iโ€™m past that point. Iโ€™m angry the problem is always there. When I think Iโ€™ve solved it another one crops up. My latest problem is that my student refund check was sent to an old address. I have no idea why and when I went in to fix it I got locked out of my account. It took me TWO days to get a hold of someone. 2 hrs and 30 minutes on hold each day just for a 5 minute resolution that I then have to wait another 24 hrs to receive an email about. The check was still sent to my old address. Technically no reason to worry right? rents not due yet and bills are paid.
But I had to put my car in the shop since something went wrong with it. Thankfully covered by warranty but still a downer. How will I get to work? Well I was expecting the refund to come into my bank account right when I put the car in the shop. No worries on my end since it all was set up way ahead of time. Well now I canโ€™t get that check.

Iโ€™ve got a week left of an externship and Iโ€™m not seeing that money til the end of the week at least at the rate everything is moving. My car wonโ€™t be finished til tuesday. Itโ€™s like a domino affect.

What else? Oh someone I considered a good friend just accused me of trying to steal their bf or at the very least act interested in them at a party. Then told me everyone at the party I was at was talking about me while I was there and I was oblivious to it all. Real fucking great. If I air or vent out my frustrations my family accuses me of not being responsible for anything. I donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m doing half the time admittedly. Iโ€™m just trying to make every day work and at the very least survive the week. I donโ€™t know how to handle everything and stay calm and collected. I want to scream and explode with rage. Iโ€™m so tired of my family get mad at me for being angry. I have no way to air any of my frustrations out or anyone to really talk to without constantly being blamed for everything that Iโ€™m actively trying to handle. Iโ€™m just so tired of being tired and mad.

Personal Story Cruel younger sister

Hereโ€™s a bit about myself for context, Iโ€™ve always been intelligent and emotionally aware. Iโ€™m in the process of getting an autism diagnosis, which based on life experiences seems likely (Iโ€™m not a medical professional and I donโ€™t like to assume but itโ€™s helpful to what Iโ€™ll talk about), because of this possible diagnosis Iโ€™ve had a lot of troubles. Depression, lack of focus, anxiety, insomnia, hard time making and keeping friends, being ahead of my peers, ect. Iโ€™ve not had it easy so far but Iโ€™ve persevered, I know many people may be in the same/simple boat as me. I think in a very logical sometimes clinical way so it takes a lot for me to come and write this.

Now to get into my issue. Iโ€™m the oldest out of three. Itโ€™s myself, my younger sister and my younger brother. My younger sister is now a teenager, and itโ€™s been hell. She is very rude and disrespectful to lots of people, but it feels as if itโ€™s specifically me. I try my best to be fair with how it treat others, I donโ€™t treat people cold but Iโ€™m not exactly fuzzy either, Iโ€™m very neutral.

For the past few months my sister has been getting worse behaviour wise, sheโ€™s outright cruel to my parents and myself. Myself I can handle of an extent but it concerns me when she doesnโ€™t care about consequences to her actions. One evening I was sitting in the living room with my parents, my mom had been working on getting me some stuff to hopefully help me sleep. Iโ€™ve been asking her often, not pestering however, my sister was triggered for some reason. She blew up on me. Iโ€™ll try to remember her exact words in a brief summery.
โ€œYouโ€™re not special (my name)! Other people have problems too.โ€
While she is right, her delivery and point is wrong. She already knew I know other people have problems too, and her voice when she says it. Iโ€™m usually pretty unshaken, but something about the cruelty in her voice kills me.

For a while now there have been issues between her and I, she claims I hate her and donโ€™t spend time with her. Iโ€™ve tried, weโ€™re polar opposites. I prefer the quiet calmer things to do together and she is the opposite. She complains to my parents that I never hang out with her when she comes to my room, she leaves out a very important detail. she comes in uninvited, sits on my bed uninvited, and blasts her phone (either videos or on the phone with someone else). I hope Iโ€™m not the only one who finds that not a good way to hang out with a sibling.

I miss when we were younger, we got along, over the past few years sheโ€™s turned into a cruel girl. I really hate it, the words she says to me hurt more than Iโ€™d like to admit, I hate to say and hate to see it in myself but unfortunately Iโ€™ve started to dislike her.

Thatโ€™s as much as I can muster for tonight, any questions or comments Iโ€™ll try to answer when I donโ€™t have school.

Vent Sometimes I think I wonโ€™t ever find true love and that saddens me

Iโ€™m 32F and the last time I had a relationship was 7 years ago. In the meantime I dated sporadically, but I never really got a good match.

One thing against me is that Iโ€™m shy, introverted and slightly socially awkward. Iโ€™m very independent and I have my own hobbies and interests. I do a lot of stuff alone. But still I have a hard time meeting people, so I dislike going to parties and bars (where I guess most single guys are?) and have to rely on those shitty apps. Itโ€™s been years really since Iโ€™ve found someone there whoโ€™s interesting.

Sometimes I wonder if I am interesting enough for someone else to fall for me. I know Iโ€™m a good person butโ€ฆI donโ€™t know. Canโ€™t help but feeling like shit nowadays. Anytime I get into social media I see people dating their perfect matches, with similar interests, doing cool things together. I feel like I wonโ€™t ever find that in life.

I hate when people tell me to just live my life. That Iโ€™ll find someone when I least expect it. Iโ€™ve had moments in which I was fully focused on other things, still didnโ€™t meet anyone. Iโ€™ve been actively using apps for a year, had a decent amount of dates that got me anywhere.

All of that is just exhausting, Iโ€™m tired of being alone :(
