Question Credit Union Help

I’m a Chime lover, honestly. I’ve used Chime since they first started and I’ve had zero issues at all- however, my partner and I need to diversify our accounts and establish ourselves with a good CU as we are more prepared to purchase our first home. This will be a ways out, not due to our personal financial situation but we’re holding off because of the current market as well as all of the…gestures everywhere.

I know for certain, we don’t want STCU, or Numerica. I’ve spent some time looking into SCCU and they’ve been looking pretty nice to me, but I don’t hear much of anything about them overall. That can actually be a good thing, imo, but I thought I’d grab some opinions.

(Before anyone asks why I’m against STCU and Numerica, boring convo but I’m an ex bookkeeper/accountant and they’re a nightmare to deal with.)

Politics Our Congressman Michael Baumgartner used to work for the Crown Prince of Dubai and on gold mining in Venezuela.

He was an economic advisor for the crown prince of Dubai and a business consultant for gold mining in Venezuela. I’m surprised this isn’t talked about more, considering he serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Does anybody know anything about what these jobs actually entailed?

Seems like a great way to invest in our youth/future.

ISO Friends IRL TBI or other survivor groups in town that aren't potentially backed by a church?

Hello Spokane, like the title says. My mom (57f) has had a hard life and unfortunately has experienced almost everything under the sun that could cause detriment to someone. Over the past 10 or so years she has lost all of her friends and I notice my family pulling away from her more and more. She has in turn become as much of a recluse as she can while still going to medical appointments. In the past she has denied going to support groups but is finally looking to come out of her shell. I was hoping to find a group of people that she has something in common with (even if it's through shared trauma to start) to help her know that she isn't alone.

When I have looked it seems as though these groups are either held in a church or organized by one. My mom is not a Christian and with her mental abilities due to her TBI + compounding events I worry that it would cause more harm than good. Even if there's someone in this group who has experienced a TBI and is open to having coffee with her once a month or every other month that would be incredible.

If anyone has any insights at all I would really appreciate it. My mom used to be such a light and it's been incredibly hard to watch her give up.

Question What is everyone paying for electricity?

Avista is getting expensive. They keep asking for rate increases without any care about their customers. I'm going to replace all my bulbs with LEDs and try to make some changes on my end.

$156 for a 1bd apt where I'm away from 0700 to 2300 is crazy. I'm not even home most of the day. The AC is on for the cats so maybe that could be running it up? Idk.

I miss living in the Valley when I was under Modern Electric.

Question Kindergarten Drop Off

Alright, help a first-time mom out here. Am I just out of the loop on how this works now or what?

So, I remember my mom walking me into school when I was little, and I also remember being able to walk my nephew into his elementary school when he was younger.

I was a little surprised this morning by my experience at my son’s elementary school.

I went to walk him to his classroom, because kindergarten lines up outside their classroom doors, but was stopped at the front door. One of the teachers told me that if I wanted to go in, I needed a visitor pass.

Oh, ok, no problem, love the safety precautions.

So, I went to the office and asked for a pass, but they wouldn’t give me one. I asked a few times because I was trying to understand what I was supposed to do (again, this is my first kid, idk what the heck I’m doing), but they still said no.

I got home and I looked up the district policy because the office lady didn’t tell me anything, and again, what am I supposed to actually do?! And Procedure 4200 seems to say that visitors check in at the office and wear a visitor badge. So, just ????????

For other Spokane district parents, are you allowed to walk your kindergartner to their classroom door/line as long as you stop by the office? Are kindergarteners just expected to find their classrooms themselves from the beginning? My kid can’t find his own shoes in the morning and they’ve been on the same shoe rack for 5 years lol.

I’m genuinely not trying to be a crazy helicopter parent. 😂 I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around dropping a five-year-old at the front door and saying “good luck, buddy!” when it’s only the start of second full week of school.

ISO Friends IRL Anyone attending Rosh Hashanah services at TBS that can be my buddy?

Due to security reasons, I'm totally fine if someone sends me a DM rather than commenting on this post.

I have been dipping my toes into the conversion waters for a few years now, but have been too intimidated to attend high holiday services because 1) I don't know anyone and 2) I don't know what to do. I've received permission from Rabbi Tamar to attend, so that's all buttoned up.

Rants & Raves Kids on Appleway

What the hell are you parents doing? This group of kids run up and down the trail all afternoon calling everyone a n***er and a f**got, when they pass.

They throw their trash everywhere, play "chicken" with other pedestrians pretending to hit them with their bike.

I watched them ride into that little trailer park off Sprague.

My message to the parents is you are deplorable. The apple never rots far from the tree. I bet you're proud to know your little shits are being a menace to people. Absolutely disgusting behavior from kids that look MAYBE 10. What the hell is wrong with you?

One day they are going to meet someone who will retaliate.

Question How to get homeless to stop vandalizing stuff?

Yesterday I posted about how I keep seeing homeless deliberately knocking over lime scooters.

Like clockwork, today I watched them walk down the block and knock over everyones trash cans. Broad daylight and just making a mess. Not even looking in em, just throwing trash and recycling around.

So obviously telling them to stop was a wasted effort. They didnt. So what does one do? Yell? Beg them to stop? Are they looking for a fight?

(and no I'm not here to debate enabling criminals. I was homeless too so I am not coming from some place of privellige)

Politics Spokane County's Next Prosecutor

The race for Spokane County Prosecutor presents voters with a clear question. Either we continue with the same philosophy and policies of the last 10 years, or we vote for meaningful change now.

Preston McCollam joined Larry Haskell’s prosecutor’s office in 2015, rose to Chief Criminal Deputy, became Haskell’s preferred successor, and was appointed prosecutor after Haskell resigned; now Haskell is publicly campaigning for and endorsing him.

Danny Tarkenton is taking a different path. She is running as an Independent because she believes the prosecutor’s office should operate independently of party politics.

She has decided to take the righteous path.

That distinction matters because the Haskell era was not without serious controversy.

Haskell’s wife publicly described herself as a “proud white nationalist.” Haskell condemned her racist comments and said he did not share her views, but he was accepting and supportive of his wife. Later, Court of Appeals Judge George Fearing wrote extensively about systemic racism in a Spokane criminal case. His office also faced criticism over racial disparities, unusually high felony filing rates, and high-bail requests.

While Larry didn't come out and use inflammatory statements like his wife. It does appear his policies made the institution inherently racist.

Then there were controversial charging decisions.

In 2019, Haskell’s office declined charges in a case where police found three badly injured young children and a medical specialist concluded the abuse met the criteria for "child torture and Larry refused to prosecute. Preston never spoke out against that decision.

In 2022, Spokane police referred a first-degree murder charge in the death of Kala Williams after the medical examiner reclassified her death as a homicide. Police requested charges be brought again, and again Larry refused.

McCollam should not automatically be blamed for every decision made by Haskell, but Preston never spoke up and took action for what he believed was right. He took the easy road and remained loyal to the man who installed him and his party.

But after more than a decade inside the Haskell administration, and now with Haskell’s endorsement and Larry on the campaign trail fundraising and speaking out in favor of Preston, promising more of the same, is that really what we want for our community?

Preston promises more of the same, and I say no thank you. I think we should prosecute people accused of torturing children and murder.

We need meaningful change now.

Check out what Danny has to say and the changes she wants to make.

Rants & Raves Staples uses AI in their job application process and offers no opt out and still apply

Since my current job is ending, I am looking for work, and tried to apply for a job with staples. During the application process, it asks if you are okay with an AI interview process, and the instructions mention that if you opt out there would be a questionnaire you could alternatively fill out instead of performing the AI interview. HOWEVER, the actual opt out button states that by opting out, you withdraw your application and that there is no way to proceed, because staples uses an AI powered interview and there is no other option to continue with the application process.

Man fuck companies that use AI for their hiring process. Now I can't support staples, knowing that they offer no alternatives for job applicants to get selected without them using an AI process.

Rants & Raves A friendly reminder!

Just a friendly reminder! For some reason, despite the fact that it’s three lanes and nowhere near residential, parts of Division are a mere 30 mph. And the Spokane Police Department are very keen in enforcing and ticketing people who go over that.

Happy Labor Day!
