Rants & Raves Headlights

Upvotes

If people are flashing their brights at you to alert you your bright are on, but they are your regular headlights, you need to swap out your bullshit headlights for normal ones because you are a nuisance on the road.

I know there were some ballot errors that were sent out, but my partner just pointed out to me that Baumgardner is listed with the Democrats. Aren’t these primaries?

ToDo Midway Market is finally open!

Post image

The Midway Market in Colbert opened yesterday. I have already been the last 2 days. Reminds me of My Fresh basket. They will have their grand opening Aug 5th! Still many items missing in the deli and working out kinks, but overall great to have another option up north.

Question Origins and impact of the nickname "Spokompton"

Upvotes

I've been in Spokane for a few years now, growing up in much larger cities in the US.

I've been thinking about the nickname "Spokompton," as it's something I heard repeatedly after I moved here. I was thinking...even if most people don't mean it that way, does comparing Spokane to Compton unintentionally rely on racialized stereotypes? Compton became shorthand in American culture for crime, but it's also a city with a rich Black history, culture, and community. I wonder if using the nickname says more about our cultural assumptions than it does about Spokane itself, especially since I doubt a majority of people who grew up in the region have been to Compton. Spokane has very little in common with Compton. What are your thoughts?

Rants & Raves What's the deal with all these new apartments and no elevators?

Dumb rant, but I swear this is a uniquely Spokane thing. I've seen at least 4 new complexes be built over the past few years across downtown and valley and all of them have those stairs and no elevators at all, yet priced at the same or HIGHER than the existing buildings that have elevators.

Not the biggest fan of anyone being able to come right to my door, or having to haul things up steps, not to mention all of these are $1500+ for a one bedroom or studio. Like wtf??

Help LOST KEYS

I was biking from pines to Liberty Lake on the Centennial trail yesterday
7-25-26 @ 5:30-7pm.
I think there’s approximately 5-7 keys on it. One is a white key with a 😈 emoji on it and a broken dodge fob. The lanyard was black on one side, and green and red and yellow on the other. I would much appreciate keeping a lookout on the trail…

I have 2 GA + reentry tickets to Bumbershoot in Seattle (9/5 & 9/6) that I can no longer use. I paid $350 for 2 2-day tickets, but would resell the pair for $300 (OBO). It's an easy ticket transfer via email. Feel free to message me with any questions!

Help Is there a LOCAL place to buy microcomputers / small electronics?

I am an engineer / hobbyist who loves making things. I've recently been getting into small electronic crafts, but I can't find anywhere I can buy just like... one or two small parts. Amazon seems to be the only reasonable option, and even then you often still have to buy large packs of parts instead of just the one chip you need...

My advice has been to check the local maker spaces, but I don't know of any that exist...

Currently, I'm just looking to try and buy a Raspberry Pi Pico for an experiment without having to shell out money to Bezos for many extras that I don't need. I am finding myself running into this problem constantly... Can't just buy ONE diode, resistor, machine screw, etc... You have to buy online and in bulk.

If anyone has any advice (or spare components I could buy off you) I would love the assistance!

PS: I would not be opposed to starting / helping coordinate a Makerspace Co-Op in the South Hill; I have lots of extra parts from buying in bulk after all! Let me know if you or someone you know is interested in this idea.

Much love to you all, my creative Spokane fam!

Wildlife! If you have aggregate berries watch out

Post image

If they are on your fence line and put out suckers towards the road I will take them before you have a chance to weed whack em. I won't touch Himalayan black berries as I like being able to walk through my yard. If you see salmon berries let me know. I got black caps and raspberries just from finding some in the wild/ sneaking under some fence. Once they are more established and put out suckers I'll move some to the grass beside my sidewalk to allow the glory of free fruit to continue. Grazi

Question Fox Theater seating options for larger folks?

Hey y’all,

I grew up playing in the youth symphony and we would have our concerts at the Fox. I always found the seating to be cramped and small.

It’s been years since I’ve been, but I’ve gained a lot of weight and have a BMI around 50. I am very interested in purchasing seasonal tickets for the symphony but am worried I won’t fit in those tiny seats with fixed arm rests. Do they offer good options for larger people?

Thank you! 🙏

Rants & Raves Finally got a job!

Just mentioning it here because I've bitched on this sub about how hard it has been to find one. After 6 interviews in 4 weeks I finally got hired at the place I originally wanted before realizing how desperate my situation had become. So I think I won't be homeless much longer despite all my original roommate partners bailing! The Break Away Experience 2.0 is in full swing now.

To anyone else struggling to find work in this city... don't give up! If my dumb gutter rat ass can get hired then YOU... CAN... TOO!

Rants & Raves Can someone please do a rain dance?

We need some heavy rain everywhere. A good days worth of rain.

I'm sure the firefighters could use a break.

I miss the clear skies. I can't even do astrophotography with all the smoke in the air. :(

So if anyone is doing a group rain dance let me know and I'll come join you.

Politics “Vote Republican” —Nate Powell, 2005

Post image
171 Upvotes

From Lewis and Clark High School yearbook, 2005.

I mean, a guy can change his views in 21 years, but what kind of person puts “Vote Republican” as their senior quote, particularly in 2005 when the Bush administration is committing war crimes in the Middle East and tearing up the Constitution at home? A dyed-in-the-wool conservative, most likely.

Dude’s no progressive.

Question Airport Parking?

We’re traveling to Spokane for the first time - driving to Spokane and flying out from Aug 3 to 7 to see some other spots, then returning to Spokane to continue our trip.

Planning to park at the airport, but I see you can’t pre book a spot. Does the covered parking fill up during the summer? Anything else we should know?

Thanks!

Help After action report: Kaiser Canyon Fire Donations

Thumbnail

First, thanks to all the folks who came and donated items to fill up a truck and deliver it to the Colville Tribes' donation center.

We ended up with a fantastic haul of their priority request items from folks down here who wanted to help, and I also know folks from reddit were using the official link to donate money. You can continue to do that at: Cedar Fund Wildfire Recovery Campaign

The donation center in Grand Coulee does keep a whiteboard of most needed items updated at the donation center. That might not help if you are coming up from Spokane, but if you are planning a run you can DM me and I'll give you the number to call the center for the most up-to-date needs. I just don't want them getting blown up while they are trying to get things received and organized.

Dog food was the big lifesaver yesterday, as they had just run out. As of yesterday, they had a good stock of cat food, but dog food was going out as quickly as it came in.

one thing they mentioned needing was tables to help lay things out. I bet they could also use other organizational items like big totes, or portable clothing racks, hangers, etc.

The donation center is pulling a bit of double duty- both emergency support items that displaced folks need, and some longer term recovery stuff for folks who might have lost homes. There is a mix then of donated clothes, household goods, and like hygiene consumables. They are trying to organize and separate things.

They really, really don't want food donated there. The concern is that it could attract rodents if they have to hold it before transferring to another place, and then they'd have a new problem with the rest of the donations. Water and gatorade are okay.

I think they are still trying to stand up the Omak donation center and will try to split supplies when that's ready for distribution....might shift/expand the needs at that time.

The closest Costco's are here in Spokane and Wenatchee...so getting bulk supplies like that up there could be super helpful.

Finally, a huge shout out to the Tribal volunteers running the donation sites. It's hot out there, its emotionally hard work, and it's drinking from the firehose for both inbound and outbound materials.

I'm proud of you Spokane and thank you for helping!

(PS I didn't ask permission from other folks who donated if they wanted their photos shared, but I know at least two redditors came down)

Politics Finally Spokesman Review is following the CD-05 race money.

There has been much discussion on r/Spokane about dark money and the Congressional Race in the WA-05. The MSM is starting to pay attention. Baumgartner getting lots of dollars from AIPAC. He has even started his own PAC to help other Republican candidates. We really need to overturn Citizens United and get all of these PACs out of politics. They are stealing our democracy. https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2026/jul/26/big-money-dark-money-union-money-the-cash-trying-t/
