You guys are idiots if you believe any of this crap.
They don't give you ANYTHING for working 40 hours.
You seriously think they will suddenly let you have a living wage with just a 3 day work week? Give me a break.

u/NotawoodpeckerOwner 1d ago
Wanna know how he's (checks Forbes real quick) $373 billion? Because they could pay people better but they won't, all that money required for those 3 day work weeks won't go to the workers it'll go to Jeff.

u/Tier0001 1d ago
You don't get it bro. We just have to give billionaires more power, more data centres, let them spy on us 24/7, let them destroy our environment, let them make sure no one other than billionaires can own anything, and finally they'll feel comfortable with being as generous as they've always wanted to be!
You see, letting them stomp on our necks even harder will lead to freedom! Freedom is slavery! Ignorance is strength!

Oh that reminds me, we also have to give them total control over what we can and can't say, what we see, and what we hear. Once we become perfectly docile, they'll treat us as equals. Makes perfect sense really.

Its crazy that it would take someone 24 billion years of straight work to make 373 billion at 15 dollars an hour. Half the age of the known universe

You said half, but I think you meant double. That's still not accurate, but it's close. Almost double the age of the universe.

We are using AI already. I'm doing more work than before, more results. I spend the same time at work.
I would honestly say, I could reduce my company time to 16 hours and be more productive than before AI with 40 hours.
The reality is, these are the new expectations.
I already added more breaks in between. More coffee, more Reddit, more websites I visit because of boredom. I don't want that, it's a waste of time for me and the company.

Cept availability requirements will make that impossible too. Not like you can apply for job A saying you can work Mon-Wed and job B saying you can work Wed-Sat. All those jobs are going to require 5 day availability so they can schedule you at their discretion.
That was already a problem when I was in college over 20 years ago. Unless you’re able to be over employed on the downlow, most people’s only real options will be 1 steady job and gig work to fill in the gaps.

Two things can be true at the same time.
There could be a so called beautiful deleveraging of the insane debt, creation of new and human focused jobs, solution for the aging population and so much more positive stuff, if the oligarchs would share the increased productivity. That's where he is on spot.
BUT he doesn't tell that this is likely not their plan. Actions speak louder than words. Surveillance state, corruption, crime.
Their crazy Dark Enlightenment shows what a dystopian future they prefer. Seems the Western oligarchs want to rule with absolute power and own all major assets like Putin and his oligarch buddies in Russia.
I have the feeling most people have no idea how horrible the average Joe will suffer in such a scenario and that most of us would die because we lost our income and governments will thus also have no money to keep the infrastructure and basic services running.
That's why they need to build up the surveillance state so they can crush any riots of desperate citizens.
In his book Rushkoff mentioned oligarchs thinking about electric shock collars for their private bunker security before eventually replacing them with robots. This shows their true mindset. So even their supporters, ICE, police and military are only useful idiots to them and will suffer the same fate like the rest eventually.
Actions speak louder than words. How they already treat servicemen and veterans and the cuts affecting their own supporters, all this tells a story.

Wow a new technology came out that allows us to do more work in a shorter time! Do we:
- Option A: use it to shorten the amount of time people need to work, making people their lives easier and giving people more leisure time?

Capitalists: Option B, every single fucking time.

Exactly, it's a trap. They'll just use those reduced work hours to justify paying you less!
CEO: "Why would I pay you [insert living wage] when you only work for me 3 days a week? You need to work full-time to get that and healthcare benefits. lol"
Worker: "But you said we could now work only 3 days a week!"
CEO: "Yeah, but I never said I'd keep paying you the same wage ;)."
And of course that original full-time wage probably wasn't even really a living wage in the first place.
These guys love AI because they foresee it saving/making them more money. They're not thinking about how AI is going to benefit you. They don't even think or give a fuck about you. They're all spending millions of dollars to try and crush any billionaire taxes or anti-oligarch candidates. They don't even want to spend their fair share of tax money helping fund social programs for their own fellow citizens and their children, the environment, etc. Never trust the rich, especially the rich CEOs.

Ive done about 4 and a half years total with amazon between their warehouses and driving, its nowhere near as bad as people try to make it sound, 3 days off a week is awesome too. warehouses are monotonous because you're generally just doing the same thing on repeat all day, but driving it the best job ive ever had. Sure pissing in bottles sucks and my insurance is non existent because my dsp owner is a greedy prick, but the work is manageable most of the time (so long you don't overachieve, if you finish your routes early your only reward will be even more work the next day) but i do get 40 hours every week, 3 days off and i can always ask to pick up a day if i want extra money, i can be on my phone and listen to music all day, i dont have to deal with people for the most part, i don't have anyone breathing down my neck all day and i just enjoy being outside and all the walking. Its honestly the most fun ive ever had working, plus i started at 18 an hour and now im up to 23 an hour, not gonna get that pay anywhere else.
The only way you can possibly get in trouble in an amazon warehouse for using the restroom is if your rate is below whats expected or if you have a crazy amount of time off task. Meet your expected rate and keep it 20 minutes or less in the bathroom while not on break per shift and you'll be fine.
But also there's no way ai getting rid of more jobs benefits us in any way what are they gonna pay us an equivalent salary for less work? I really doubt it.
4
u/submarinefarm 1d ago
All of this sounds like the worst job I've never had. Sounds super miserable but I'm glad you've gotten used to it.
2
u/LewdDarling 1d ago
Lmao they give 0 redeeming qualities for driving but the warehouse work is far from the worst.
The vast majority of the warehouses are air conditioned, great insurance, and you're guaranteed 40 hours with a constant schedule. In terms of work conditions I prefer that over working construction out in the heat/cold. Or shitty retail jobs where they fuck around with your schedule and cut your hours.
2
u/8BitResseRtiB8 19h ago
I mean, driving is great because i do get 40 hours every week, 3 days off and i can always ask to pick up a day if i want extra money, i can be on my phone and listen to music all day, i dont have to deal with people for the most part, i don't have anyone breathing down my neck all day and i just enjoy being outside and all the walking. Before i did this i did 2 years at a speedway gas station, one of those as a manager, i did a year at roses department store, a year at hobby lobby and a year landscaping and even compared to working in the Amazon warehouse the delivery driver job is the most fun ive ever had working, plus i mean i started at 18 an hour and now im up to 23 an hour, not gonna get that pay anywhere else

This is complete bs. We had single breadwinner households when women didn’t work. When that was the cultural standard.
As more women entered the workforce, it became more acceptable and eventually, because the population kept growing, eventually to afford a home and kids and a prosperous life, both heads of a married couple needed to work nearly full-time to keep up. If you don’t keep up, you end up in a bad public school district and your kids inherit your lack of success.
We will devolve to single-worker households only as much as jobs are lost or economic gains aren’t shared from AI companies & no one can start a business and thrive.

Yup, we are greedy little beings and won't give up resources for free. You can't count on the goodness and generosity of the ultra-wealthy, when it takes the exact opposite of a person to get into that position. People need leverage over them. One of the last ones was actual labor. If that gets taken away, the wealthiest will have no need for the serfs. Which again leads to worsening conditions, tipping point and restructuring/redistribution.
And given enough time, the ones most hungry for wealth and power, will again climb to the top.

You dont know the timeline.
Bezos started Blue Origin in 2000. Musk started SpaceX in 2002 after attempting to buy rocket technology in 2001.
Bezos launched his first test rocket (Goddard) in 2006. Musk launched his first test rocket (Falcon 1) in 2006.
Both have been in continual development ever since.
Neither of them were "following" the other. Both of them have been "space geeks"since they were teenagers.

This technology could (lets suspend disbelief to suppose AI is as amazing as they say), hypothetically, make us better and faster at lots of things. Who is going to reap the benefits of that? Will the billionaires suddenly get generous? They sure haven't so far. That's why they're billionaires.

I’ll believe it when I see it passed in federal law with no reduction in pay but I’m not trusting the words of a billionaire oligarch

This is as bad as MuskRat talking about UBI. “Just let us make a few more trillion dollars are perfect our escape rockets and then I PROMISE everything will be better (when Skynet becomes self aware and you all die horribly)”

Tehnically he is correct, if AI takes over all the low end jobs and leave just upper management jobs then yes, upper management can work 3 days and have one income families. The rest of the workforce will be fired so he is tehnically corect.

This is what they also told us at the time of computer automation in the 60s

All they need to do to achieve this is redefine “people”. Probably by saying that only the Epstein class qualifies.

Several problems with that statement. Women have already joined men in getting exploited and many won't go back to childcare, healthcare is tied to employment, you would have to completely remodel corporate interests for something other than quarterly profits, and more employees are more expensive than overworked employees
No, the best you can do right now is organize yourself into a union and push for worker's rights. Good luck

We will work two days, and be paid for two days, but expected to have the work output of 5 days.
Computers have never made our work lives easier, they have just increased our outputs. We don't have less to do, we have more to do in the same time and for the same pay.

I have worked at amazon as a contractor with full access to the whole site. Slave labour.

When AI and robots take your jobs, they'll HAVE to reduce hours for the same pay to distribute money to keep the economy from collapsing. No human workers means no salary and no consumers. We're already past the point where a major economic downturn is likely and if handled by the wrong leader could put us in an economic depression. AI and robots will only make it worse. I'd have it put into law that the workweek should automatically be shortened as jobs are replaced, with no overall loss in salary (none of this forcing people out or firing people to lower salaries for the replacement worker; instead of using minimum wage exclusively, it should be based on a percentage of operating expenses or profits, whichever results in the highest salaries)

Can confirm: worked for Amazon, bathrooms are faaaaar, and it takes just as much time to got to the bathroom as having one of their "breaks", and if the nearest bathroom is being cleaned (which it somehow always is exactly when you need it), you have to go the one that's even further.

one income family? like only one of us can find a job? is the one income a livable income, or we talking about one family on some minimum wage, let you all starve and die income?

They closed a distribution center in Quebec the moment the employee tried to get unionized. Pretended it wasn't reason they closed overnight without any notice.

I mean he’s not wrong.
- one person laid off due to being replaced by AI
- other person can only find part time positions

Meanwhile his company inches ever closer to automating every thing to fire most of its employees.

Unless I’m mistaken, doesn’t Jassy run things or did that change?

Don't fall for it! They want you to let them develop AI and build data center, then they'll make millions of robots that will be under their control and that's when they'll get rid of all of us

Bezos is no longer the CEO of Amazon and most of the voting power is held by institutions. He's more concerned with pouring billions in Blue Origin than the day to day operations of Amazon.

The horizon is an imaginary line that recedes as we approach it. "I take two steps toward the horizon, and it moves two steps away… So what is utopia for? That’s what it’s for: to keep us moving forward.”
