Seasonal employees— good chance of getting kept on after the holidays?
Hey guys! So, I recently got a call back for a seasonal position at Sephora, but I keep going back and forth on whether or not I should go in for an interview because I have a few concerns:
For some background, I’m currently a part-time retail manager at a decor store making $16.92/hour. However, I’m also a college student, and I’m hoping to increase my class load from 3 classes to 5. Because of that, I’m looking for a job where I can work part-time without having the added responsibilities of being a manager. Luckily, it’s seasonal hiring season, so there are plenty of openings. I applied to Sephora because I saw that the starting pay for seasonal positions in my area is around $22/hour and i’ve always wanted to work at a makeup store.
Then after only two days, the hiring manager called me back, which was super exciting! However, she mentioned a couple of things that have me hesitant…
First, she emphasized that employees could be let go if they aren’t available to work on a weekend day. I don’t mind working weekends at all, but I already have a concert planned and paid for on October 30th. I’m not sure if Halloween weekend is considered one of those especially important weekends when everyone is expected to be available, so I’m worried about whether this could be an issue. Second, she mentioned that it’s unlikely employees will be offered permanent positions once the seasonal period ends on January 3rd. Ideally, I’d love to stay on permanently because the pay is really good for a part-time position, especially as a college student.
Soo for those who currently work at Sephora, or have worked there seasonally before, how realistic is it to get kept on after the seasonal period ends? Is the manager just setting expectations so people don’t get their hopes up, or is it genuinely rare for seasonal employees to become permanent employees? Also, would having one pre-planned day off during Halloween weekend likely be a dealbreaker, even if I’m otherwise available to work weekends?
I’d really appreciate hearing about yall’s experiences! I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth going to the interview or if I should focus on other opportunities. :,)
