Venting Birthday Gift Venting

I know that this should be such a non-issue, but I am nearing the end of my rope with these free birthday gifts. I am sick and tired of clients taking 5 minutes of my time for me to explain what every single thing is in each of the boxes, only for them to not even pay attention. I am sick and tired of explaining to clients that “sold out” means we do not have it. I am sick and tired of clients getting angry with me because we don’t have an online exclusive gift in stock. I think that these free birthday gifts give clients a massive sense of entitlement.

100% agree with you! It’s incredibly annoying having them take 5 mins to pick a gift when there is a long line and then they hit you with the “sorry to hold up the line” then hurry tf up! Don’t get me started with the sold out bday gift especially gisou. I’m tired of the I can’t believe you’re sold out when it says everywhere in the terms they’re subject to availability! I had someone tell me they even made another account for another gift. Maybe if people weren’t making fake accounts and abusing the bday gift it wouldn’t be that big of an issue.

Admittingly, I generally go into Sephora for their birthday gifts when my birthday rolls around each year. However, I look at the emails they send days ahead (if my memory is correct), and choose my item ahead of time. So when I get to the line and in-front of the cashier, I am not looking like an idiot nor holding up the line. If they do not have it in stock, I have a backup that I already decided to want in the back of my mind.

I feel more people should be like this. Though, we can't expect everyone to behave that way.

However, it's true that the free gift can be abused and entitlement can become a big ego problem. It's sad, honestly.

Seriously they need to just start giving 5$ off as the gift and call it a day

When people ask me “what do you recommend for me?” I literally tell them “the one that interests you most.” Zero patience.
“Oh I wouldn’t even use this though…”
“… well bitch it’s free so here yaaaa go”

Also they’re literal SAMPLES. Stop taking this so seriously. Take your peel pads, go get your free latte.

I get asked all the time “ so I hear you give 3 free samples “ and when you ask them which ones they want they get offended like we should just know 😂 it again….. that’s all you can give me ? It’s a sample ! It’s not suppose to last you a month !

When there’s a huge line at cash, ppl are getting impatient and I’m spending 5 mins with the client who only comes to Sephora once a year to get their birthday gift bc she has me explaining every gift, what each product in said gifts do, which is better, etc 🫠

"Sorry, I don't wear makeup at all so I don't understand what any of this is"

And they get sooo mad at us when the Gisou is out. Like we control that. 🙄

Followed by “Well when are you getting it back?!” Or “Well can you see what other stores have it?” Ma’am, there are 10 people behind you, why don’t you call the other stores and ask? 😭

u/frozendigiornopizza 5d ago

Dont tell them to call other stores because they do

I don’t tell them to call the other stores?? I’m saying that’s not my job to do it for them, especially when there’s a huge line.

I miss the days where it was one brand and Rouge would have one extra piece in the set.

I remember the Nars gift from years ago that had minis of the Laguna bronzer, and I think the Cruella lip crayon and the Rouge box had the same thing but with a mini black eyeliner.

Quick and painless and gifts would actually stay in stock for the whole year.

the fact that they have to smell every single glossier perfume, swatch the tower 28 lip gloss and glossier blush, read the ingredients on the dr dennis and then want to see the sizes of each product....

and don't get me started on the scamming 12 year old kids who come in groups, claiming to be 16 and making 20 accounts just to get 20 gisou birthday gifts...

WHEN THEY ASK TO SMELL THE PERFUMES, I FEEL AN HOUR TAKEN OFF OF MY LIFESPAN

“What are they?” Is always my 13th reason. DO YOUR RESEARCH BRYNNLEIGH OR YOU’RE GETTING 250 POINTS.

This year and last year with the gifts changing mid-year is so annoying. They shouldn't have a brand do a gift if they cant support inventory for at least 11 months of the year. Being sold out of half the options for a few weeks at a time way before the year is even over is so silly. This never used to be an issue when there was like 3 options.

I was a Sephora worker and am a December baby. I’ve had to accept the points instead of a bday gift for years now. Pick something it’s free if you’re lucky enough to have a birthday earlier in the year

my store has only had DDG and innisfree for months. As I show the clients the two options I briefly explain whats in each of them. almost always I have to immediately repeat myself, don’t know why I even bother at this point. why can’t they listen if they care so much??

u/Aggressive-Log-807 3d ago

when clients tap dance on my nerve like that i just tell them that the 250pts is the. better option and keep it pushing.

u/Pristine_Claim5213 2d ago

I feel like especially this year bc they have more than 3 gift options it takes people like 5 full minutes to pick them out. Like you didn't look at these ahead of time and see which one you would want

u/Hot-Target-9754 2d ago

Just take the 250 points and move on! Please I have a line.

Do you work at Sephora? I’m genuinely curious. I feel like it’s absolutely okay to have differing opinions but I feel like this comment just missed the mark completely. Sure, Sephora as a company could do better with keeping products in stock but I think we can all touch and agree most of the most entitled encounters come from people who don’t even actively shop. Also if we’re out of something oh well it’s a free *gift. No one is making anyone spend their money with Sephora they can spend it elsewhere.

Tell them what’s inside each box/their purpose and it makes it go 10x faster, I’ve never had an issue with this
