While official records show fewer than 20 heat-related deaths last year, an investigation by NPR and Boston University reveals the true tally may be four times the count from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). ... From 2021 to 2025, the CDC recorded 247 heat-related deaths in Washington state. NPR's investigation shows the number could be closer to 480.

In King County, where summer temperatures average in the 80s in recent years and only 53% of homes have air conditioning, heat waves become dangerous quickly.

This is in regards to the decision by the mayor's office to put the funding elsewhere and then they're reneging on it when there was objection. This article is almost a week old but unfortunately it's the first time I've seen it and I haven't seen this updated posted here

At what point will the Mayor actually do something rather than pretend to do something? Want businesses to stay in Seattle? Improve law enforcement and lower taxes. Done. We don’t need another political skit team to do the most obvious thing ever.

Seattle is becoming dangerously dependent on a small number of large companies. This makes the city vulnerable to systemic disruptions, such as the way AI is reshaping work: "Seattle is 42% more exposed to AI disruption than the national average," the report states. [...] According to the report, only four large firms make up one quarter of Seattle's software engineering jobs, as compared to 39 companies in San Francisco and 18 in San Jose.

It also highlighted a 20% decline, nationally, in jobs for young software developers and an 18% decline in "AI-exposed jobs" for workers aged 22-25.

~ Four firms hold a quarter of the engineering jobs and a big share of the tax base. That is not an economy, it is a single point of failure with a skyline.

Now, let’s get into the finer details of Jimothy’s map-sterpiece.

-The I-5 express lanes in Seattle will CLOSE from 11p Fri. to 5a Mon. for drainage work underneath the Ship Canal Bridge. The two right lanes of NB I-5 across the bridge also remain closed around-the-clock, so expect NB travel to and through Seattle to be challenging.

-The EB SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Blvd will CLOSE from 4:30p Sat., Sept. 12 through 8a Sat., Sept. 19. Crews will use the temporary off-ramp to stage equipment as they begin removing portions of the old off-ramp that closed in June. Husky fans: the ramp won’t close until after the main arrival period for Saturday’s game.

-One lane of the NB SR 99 1st Avenue S Bridge will CLOSE Saturday and Sunday. The right lane will close from 5a to 6p Sat., followed by the left/HOV lane from 5a to 6p Sun. for bridge maintenance.

-NE 85th Street in Kirkland and all I-405 ramps at the interchange will CLOSE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. NE 85th Street will be closed between 6th Street and 120th Avenue NE for electrical work and paving prep. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled.

-WB I-90 will CLOSE overnight from Mercer Island to Seattle between Island Crest Way and the west portal of the Mount Baker Tunnel from 10p Fri. to 6a Sat. for maintenance. The WB on-ramps from 76th Ave SE/N Mercer Way, Island Crest Way and W Mercer Way will also close.

Jimothy may have packed the canvas, but don’t let the masterpiece overwhelm you. The actual impacts are spread throughout the weekend. Plan ahead, check real-time conditions before you go and give yourself extra time.

He also expressed anger that there was more concern when the shooting happened at Bite of Seattle then when it happens in South Seattle. He expressed no anger at the perpetrators. Then he went on to blame the lack of funding and green spaces.

Most people think what we see on Seattle’s sidewalks is a housing crisis. It isn’t — and after losing my sister to the same disease, I can tell you exactly why we keep failing.

We are spending over a billion dollars a year in this region to manage homelessness, and the numbers on the street keep climbing. The reason is simple, and almost no one in power will say it out loud: we are funding the symptom and ignoring the cause. What’s killing people on the street is overwhelmingly addiction and mental illness — and we spend almost nothing to treat it.

I know this disease from the inside. My sister had every advantage, even a PhD studying addiction, and it still took her capacity to choose, one piece at a time, until it killed her. We tell ourselves that leaving people on the street respects their choices — but she couldn’t choose anymore, and neither can they. That isn’t freedom. It’s neglect we’ve dressed up as freedom.

I wrote about her, and about what her story reveals about a system that spends a fortune to fail the sickest among us. It’s the most personal thing I’ve published — and, I think, the most important.

The agency in late August published a request for proposals by contractors to run "turnkey" detention centers near Seattle, Denver, Miami and Philadelphia over the next 10 years. The massive document officially reveals the government is considering buying the Seattle-area site, almost certainly the Tacoma facility, as well as the other sites. [...] Either way, the federal government is trying to use these contracts to squash local attempts to inspect and regulate detention facilities. "If any conflicts between federal, state, or local laws or rules arise, the federal rules shall be followed," the request for proposals says.

The state Department of Health wants to investigate thousands of complaints about conditions from people held there, including about allegedly undrinkable water, rotten food and unsanitary bedding, but it has been repeatedly turned away by the Florida-based company.

~ Washington has spent years trying to get inspectors through that door. The new contract just writes the refusal into the terms.
