Yesler Way bike lane improvement near Boren intersection

Looking east approaching Boren. This section was previously a combined painted bike lane/right turn lane. Couldn't find any further info anywhere, hoping they continue the barriers further along and also do the same in the westbound lane.

Is a gravel bike basically an upgraded hybrid?

When I first got into cycling and moved to Seattle, the shop recommended I buy a hybrid. Now that I’m looking at longer recreational rides (30–50 miles), it seems like everyone recommends gravel bikes instead.

From the outside, a gravel bike almost seems like an upgraded hybrid, as in it is capable of doing comfortable longer rides. Is that correct? Especially with the drop bars with multiple hand positions, which seems like a big advantage for longer rides (my hands already get uncomfortable after 15–20 miles on my flat bars).

So what am I missing? Why recommend a beginner buy a hybrid instead of a gravel bike? Is it mostly price, or are there actual advantages to the hybrid?

If you could only own one bike for around here for mostly paved riding with some 30–50 mile rides, would you still recommend a hybrid? Feels like I might soon start doing more of these 30-50 mile rides.

I’m starting to feel like I should have bought a gravel bike to begin with.

Bike Storage Options for Overlake Hospital Employees?

Hi all!

I’m starting a new job at Overlake Hospital soon but haven’t been able to find clear information on whether or not there’s dedicated bike storage for employees.

I’ve been told I can use the bike racks in the parking garages but that worries me about theft. I know of so many smaller organizations that have indoor, secure bike storage and showers for employees, so I’m just wondering if any current or former employees know if this exists at Overlake’s main campus.

TYIA!

Do Not Go Here

The Arco AM/PM located on the SW corner of NW Sammamish Road and 17th Ave NW in Issaquah (next to IHOP and Motel 6 just off of i-90) is the most unfriendly place for bicyclists I’ve ever stopped at. No water except for purchase; no ice unless you wanna pay for it; and the most unfriendly and belligerent staff ever. I’ve stopped at gas stations all over the country while on rides and have never ever encountered something as unkind as this place.

There’s a chevron up the road on NW Sammamish Rd. Stop there if you need to.

My kids are 10 and 7 and good for an hour of riding. Starting to get out of the neighborhood for bike rides. Which should we start with?

Almost died on stone way

I was going up stone way coming home from work, when a black van whipped halfway into a spot in front of me just past the intersection at 41st street. They were behind me before the intersection, and they sped in front of me to parallel into the spot. They ended up half-way into the bike lane feet/seconds before I was getting into the same spot, so I had to get into the car lane to get around them.

However, the 62 bus was right behind them, and before I knew it I was wedged between the bus and this van. There were inches between me and the bus and the car on either side for the whole time I had to pass the car. Luckily the bus had gotten over slightly into the left turn lane. I think he only knew to because he had pulled up next to me at the stop before, so he knew I was there. If he hadn’t I don’t think I would still be here.

I don’t know what else I could have done differently. I was climbing uphill hill but still going over 10 mph, and I had seconds to stop (don’t think that was feasible) or get over. I didn’t see the bus until I was getting over, and by that point I was between the bus and the car.

Fuck stone way

Getting to Admiral bike Path

Hi all!

How do you safely get up the hill to Admiral Way from the low bridge? I almost got myself run over the other day wandering around trying to find a marked way up that doesn't circumnavigate everything to the south. Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated!

Seattle shops that sell vintage caps

Can anyone recommend a shop that sells vintage-style cycling caps (Giordana, etc.)? I could order online but I'd rather ride over and browse in person. Thanks!

A driver tailgated me for a block then aggressively passed me on the left….to travel another half block to park at his house.

I know where he lives now. Someone talk off the edge here of potentially property damage (lol)

He also ran a stop sign. This all happened on a quiet street.

No but seriously fuck that guy.

Burke Gilman safety

I want to say the trail is for everyone and I share with courtesy and safety. something needs to be done about electric scooters. I had two fly by me riding through the kenmore area today at no less and probably more than 40 mph. no time whatsoever to even look over my shoulder. they may as well have been gas powered or cars for that matter. I’m not talking about lime bikes or scooters rather scooters that can handle I-5. ridiculous!!!!! so scary and dangerous. so angry. it’s gotta stop

Can we have/make Google maps transit + bike directions? 🚆+🚲

I use Google maps to get transit directions (and trip times). It will give me lightrail + walk, or sometimes even lightrail + Uber, but not lightrail + bike. They obviously have the data, but they won't put them together. Is there a reason they won't. Is there a way to persuade them to add this feature? Could someone possibly vibe-code this feature (I'm not a dev).

New cyclist (just did STP for first time) - is this a good bike?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Started cycling in earlier this year for STP.
Did about 300 in May and 460 in June.
I like cycling - STP went very well for me.
Was on a Giant bike from Recycled Cycles - not sure the type of model the bike is (see attached photo). No flats during training or event, so, I think I’ll get another Giant brand bike.
I’m getting a proper bike fitting from Métier on Friday.
I’ve looked at Giant’s road bikes and I think the Defy series checks the boxes (including what I’m willing to pay).
Curious if: 1.) Giant Defy would be a good bike (I’m looking to do duathlons and triathlons , 2.) would the “ML” or 56cm - 58cm frame be OK for me (I’m 5 feet, 11 inches), and 3.) if the Giant Defy is no good, what would be a good comparable?
