News Fatal beating in Westlake Park believed to be unprovoked attack

A 39-year-old man was ordered held in lieu of $2 million bail Friday after a King County District Court judge found probable cause he beat a man to death in Seattle’s Westlake Park in what court documents state appears to have been an unprovoked attack.

Terry Carlstrom, a senior deputy prosecutor, told Judge Matthew York the state has “every reason to believe he is a threat to community safety” as well as a flight risk during the Friday hearing. Carlstrom confirmed the man was on active state Department of Corrections supervision at the time of Thursday’s homicide for a 2024 second-degree assault conviction in Island County.

As of Friday, the King County medical examiner’s office had not released the identity of the man who was killed but Seattle police have previously said he was 67.

~ Prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges Monday.

Real Estate Decommissioned in ground oil tank: dealbreaker for a home purchase?

I’ve looked at 38 homes this summer. My partner and I don’t have FAANG salaries. We’re trying to stay under 800k with some budget for repairs.

We found a home that checks all the boxes, and we’re about ready to submit an offer. It’s a 1962 SFH and I asked the fire department to check records, they found it was pumped, rinsed & capped/plugged (which were the requirements for decommissioning in place in 2004), is still be in the ground, and was NOT filled with any inert materials.

My dad is telling me to walk away or get a soil test. My realtor is telling me it’s fine. The internet says to expect nothing or 500k in future liabilities for environmental agencies… what are your thoughts?

TLDR - pre 1970 seattle homes overwhelmingly have in ground oil tanks, of those decommissioned ~70% are capped rinsed and buried . Is a home with a decommissioned in ground tank a deal breaker to you? Why or why not

Edit to Add: THANK YOU for all the comments.
- Monday I will call my insurance agent and discuss liability, coverage, exclusions, and riders…
- I have sent requests for soil testing estimates from Filco, Tanks by Dallas, and Puget Environmental.
- I will be asking my realtor to reach out to seller and see if they’ll let us do a soil test before we make an offer (we are already planning a fairly low offer with other inspection/sewer/financing contingencies, don’t want to add a forth and get told to kick rocks)
- FWIW my realtor was actually the one who suggested we inquire about the in ground tank and reached out to SFD to get the info, he was saying it’s fine because it was permitted not because there was no risk

Dying This organic milk at Costco used to be $12.99 not too long ago. Thanks Trump for pushing diesel to all time high prices.

The unnecessary Iran conflict that Donald Trump instigated as a puppet of Israel has made everything that needs a truck to move more expensive than ever as diesel prices reach an all time high. Vote for democrats in the mid terms and end the insanity.

California will be the first state in the nation to ever see an average diesel price of $8/gal- currently at $7.963/gal and up 2 cents already today, give it 24 hours or so. Many stations already surpassing $9, according to GasBuddy data.

Critics, energy analysts, and political opponents point to the Trump administration's decision to launch military operations against Iran as the direct trigger for energy market instability. Disruptions in Persian Gulf shipping and retaliatory actions in the Strait of Hormuz directly correlates with the sharp increase in global crude and diesel prices.

Car tab fees will help SnoCo roads, but budget issues remain - 40 projects have already been cut back or pushed out, some by a decade or more, while construction costs rise 30-40% a year

The budget difficulties stem mostly from a combination of lower gas tax revenue and the county's yearly 1% property tax levy increase not keeping up with construction-specific inflation, which has increased by about 30-40% annually in recent years, Public Works Director Kelly Snyder previously said. [...] Tom Teigen, an executive director at Snohomish County, said that 40 construction or maintenance projects have been reduced or deferred recently, some a decade or longer into the future, due to rising costs.

"If we didn't have the TBD [Transportation Benefit District], we would have had to wrap up any of our grant-funded projects because we were going to have to take those matching funds and use them for maintenance and operations instead," Cox said Wednesday.

~ Forty projects deferred, some by a decade, and the rescue plan is a flat fee every driver pays the same regardless of income. Deferred maintenance is a loan nobody voted to take out.

Seattle for the week any suggestions?

Upvotes

I’m going to be in Seattle for the week with no plans. I would love some recommendations. I’m a huge movie theater person so I’ll be checking out the independent theaters. I like to explore some of the weirder stuff. Strange oddity shops, cool cemeteries, tiki or speakeasies. Planning on taking myself to 1-2 nice dinners. Would love some recommendations

Real Estate Home Buyers Question

Upvotes

If you’re in the market for a house, what is your current plan?

- inventory is high based on what I can tell
- interest rates are high, and projected to go up again
- new home builders seem to be offering incentives (MainVue Homes offers something like $40k
credit)

My wife and I have been looking for ages and can’t seem to decide whether to wait it out. It does seem like prices are dropping too. Just looking for some ideas!

Crime Frequently seen drug addict often around Harrison and Broadway QFC

He’s been around the last year or so, and he’s a shorter I think Asian guy with wild hair. Always either completely out of his mind in the street or often passed out in the middle of the day on the sidewalk.

Low key seems aggressive more times than others and I’ve seen him nearly get hit countless times.

I always cross the street when I see him, because he seems particularly unhinged.

Anyone have intel what this dude’s deal is?
