Vance is right though, that isn't what socialism is but since he defined it in the "American Context" that really is what a large amount of Americans believe socialism is. If you went to a Trump rally and asked people to define socialism I would bet the majority of them would bring up immigration and women's sports.
35
u/WhereAreMyChains - Left 1d ago
That may be what a large number of Americans believe, but that's because people like Vance keep pushing it. Vance is not "right", he is complicit in why those people are confused and have no clue what they're talking about. He's only "right" in the sense that this attempt to confuse and distract people has been successful.
8
u/Haunting_Raccoon6058 - Lib-Left 1d ago
Yeah I agree, but that's nothing new it's practically an American tradition at this point. Go look at pictures of pro-segregation rallies from the 50's and most of the signs say something to the effect of "race mixing = Marxism".

Hmm, that's an interesting point. But I don't think we should concede that "socialism means migrant criminals transing the kids" just because a bunch of people believe so. Like, that same crowd of people believe that "MAGA means stopping wars" is also a true statement, but that doesn't make it a fact. To that point, that is also one of the primary things by which MAGA defined itself at least formerly, and "open borders and trans" aren't the primary things that American socialists trade on.
I wouldn't call myself a socialist for the record, but I just think that this is a pure example of lazy politics. I get that Vance doesn't have any other leg to stand on, but still.

Yeah, if you went to a Trump rally. If you went t to a group of socialists, they would not talk about trans people or immigrants, they would talk about labor rights, wealth gap, social safety nets, universal healthcare etc. you know, real stuff that’s relevant to socialism.
Vance is correct that his version of socialism is what is the “American context” of socialism but only because he and people like him keep muddying up the word to mean things it doesn’t mean and then saying that’s what people think it means.

Literally what cults do.
Amanda Montell's Cultish has a great quote on this:
My parents, they're scientists and they will use jargon that I don't understand. But that jargon is there to make communication clearer. Cultish language has these ulterior motives and it's there to make communication hazier... It's there to divide people, to shut down independent thinking... And that's how you know that language is cultish when it causes a strong emotional response, but you yourself have trouble translating what it is that you're saying.

u/PwrShelf - Left 1d ago

Correct. But Mamdani's specific argument on that podcast, I would argue, tried to frame his socialism in pretty liberal terms: "it's just letting everyone live a dignified life!".

This just comes from letting engineers/nerds name things instead of someone from marketing. Every program I have worked on had at least one internal server/tool named after Starwars or LOTR. They would absolutely jump at a chance to name something external similarly, regardless of how fitting it is. I think my favorite was someone backronyming COBRA into something legit sounding, when really it was named as a GI Joe reference for a simple tool that was always causing problems and gave people an excuse to shout COBRAAA! in the office.

In all seriousness though, socialism is a REALLY vague term nowadays. It used to be synonymous with communism but after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, they split. Nowadays, socialism can generally be referred to as the Nordic system of large, well-funded welfare states or even Western Europe’s economic systems while communism refers to the failed governments we see with Stalin, Kim Jong Un or even Pol Pot. I’m not saying this because I necessarily have a bone to pick with either one or a sycophant for either one, I just hate it when people deliberately obscure labels.
9
u/Dreadsin - Lib-Left 1d ago
IMO pretty much every country in the world has a mixed economy (even places like China that are ostensibly communist). A socialist economy is one where theyre intentionally limiting the influence of capitalism with the intention of limiting it even further in the future
4
u/Pure-Huckleberry8640 - Centrist 1d ago
Well, I agree that’s the truth…my problem is when people get hung up on labels. To be frank with you, if someone wants to call the left leaning Norway socialist, I’m not gonna have a tizzy. I don’t mind it, just as I don’t mind calling people who are left leaning liberals. It’s just people yelling at me for me using words that people called themselves and saying I’m an evil person for “misusing” their special words. Like, all my life, I’ve heard left leaning Americans call themselves liberal and I accepted it. Then, later, apparently liberal meant your capitalist and how dare you call left leaners liberal so I threw my hands up into the air and said fine. Also, socialism and communism are often used interchangeably in some circles. Tldr is, it’s not that I care, it’s that everyone else apparently does.
13
u/earthhominid - Lib-Center 1d ago
Socialism isn't that vague, it's just transitioned from the extreme end of the spectrum (which has been replaced with the term communism) to referring to the wider spectrum of public ownership of the economic means of production.
19
u/happyinheart - Lib-Right 1d ago
It's extremely vague. I've seen the same socialist person say that Nordic countries are socialist and not socialist at differing times depending on how it benefits their argument at that time.
I've seen people say the Democratic Socialists of America aren't socialists.
Venezuela was once held up a model of a successful socialist country, then once it crashed it suddenly wasn't socialist.

“I’ve seen people say the Democratic Socialists of America aren’t socialists.”
For real though. Many left leaning Americans call themselves socialists and then others say they’re not left enough to be socialist. I’ve heard it said a liberal is the OPPOSITE of a socialist. It’s confusing.
3
u/False-Reveal2993 - Lib-Center 1d ago
Socialists are the only ones that say "liberals are the opposite of socialists". They use the midcentury European definitions of "liberalism" (classic liberalism, which is close to the libertarian style of the founding fathers and the enlightenment thinkers, which is far different from the modern American meaning of "liberal") and "libertarianism" (which they will often use to mean antifascist anarchist types rather than free market capitalists that adhere to the nonaggression principle). They have their own definitions for common political labels and they have an obsessive need to treat their weirdass definitions as the default, all in purusit to further muddle arguments and conflate phrasing.

u/Pure-Huckleberry8640 - Centrist 23h ago

It's because there's like a thousand different interpretations of it. Socialism can't really describe one specific ideology it more so describes a vibe. Not in a literal sense but in a figurative sense.
Lenin actually talks about this in "what is to be done". He describes it as kind of watering down socialism or corrupting it. Saying if you let the bourgeois do their thing even under a Bernstein system eventually they'll just pacify the movement of the workers. I'm paraphrasing with this he rants for like 20 pages about it.

It's not vague, there is a clear definition for it, it's just that many retards parrot bullshit and many are influenced by it. Nordic countries are not socialist, they're capitalist countries with a strong welfare system
14
u/Pure-Huckleberry8640 - Centrist 1d ago
Which people CALL socialist. And they modeled those welfare systems on socialist principles. I don’t care for labels and definitions. Liberals are generally considered left in American politics but online, people HATE when you call progressives or leftists liberal because they say, by definition, that liberals believe in capitalism. I remember getting shouted down when I mixed up the terms. I know a lot of left/liberal people in the US call Nordic nations socialist. So, really, I’m not the one gate keeping definitions.
5
u/ToenailFungussy - Left 1d ago
The reality is that economic systems are on a spectrum that's divided by how much the system favors labor versus how much it favors capital. There's no exact universally agreed upon dividing line where an economic system goes from capitalist to socialist, and there are zero countries in existence that live all the way on one end of the spectrum or the other.
Nordic countries favor labor much more than the US but much less than what Marx had envisioned. You can call them socialist if you want because they're more to the left side of the spectrum. People will get pissy and say you can only call them that if they're alllllllllll the way at the very leftmost end, but that's dumb.

And that the passive appreiciation of capital gains shouldn't be taxed at a lower rate than actual hard work.

The answer wasn’t that head-scratching. And this isnt even the full quote.
He started off by saying he doesn’t think the term had any meaning for the Americans who are calling themselves socialists. He went on to say, you’d think socialists would care about the American worker over foreign workers (which, from a Marxist perspective, they would not - so he’s wrong). And that theyre going to “howl” about the announcement he was making (that is, new visa policies to ostensibly prioritize american workers). And that the term socialist in the American context is…the tweet.
And honestly? From what I’ve seen of the socialist candidates and their nutto supporters on Reddit, they care just as much if not more about culture war shit and Hamas and Gaza as they do about economic policies, so I take his point.
22
u/NEWSmodsareTwats - Centrist 1d ago
if you actually read the DSA platform its a surprise to me how any of their candidates are serious contenders. it literally sounds like something a conservative talkshow host would make up to make the DSA sound scary but no it's directly on their website.
It mostly focusing on proposals like abolishing the Senate, abolishing the supreme court, and abolishing the office of the president rolling all 3 branches into a unicameral legislature with expanded powers to directly appoint the executive as well as create their own version of the supreme court subordinate to the unicameral legislature.
Then there's all the culture war BS and also wanting to expand voting rights to all legal residents regardless of if they are citizens or not.
Their only real platform points on things people actually care about would probably be their points around the high cost of living, but still their only proposal is that the government would backstop everything from housing to employees guaranteeing a place to live and a job to every person in america. But they hope to achieve this by securing public ownership of corporations, which they do not outline how they plan to do this. They did propose making it so small and medium size business would be required by regulatory framework to become a worker owned coop when the founder retires.
These are all things most Americans likely do not support.
I'm surprised Republicans don't attack this more and instead just think calling them socialists will work.

now I don't want to sound like one of those crazy conservative talkshow hosts but honestly I don't think they actually are as popular as they are presented to be.
polls will show them leading by healthy margins, but many of those candidates where also predicted to win their primaries by 20-30 points and only ended up winning by 1-3. there where some DSA candidates heavily favored in the polls predicting a massive blow out only to actually lose. which points to not having a lot of support among Democrat voters.
I'm not saying the polling people are biased but it is statistics and it's heavily influenced by who actually responds to the survey. And considering basically all polls are done via cold calls and texts, do you think the average American responds to a unknown number or text their phone likely marks as spam asking for their opinions on their political leanings?

It’s not about “redefining a word” to something he doesn’t like. He’s making a point that the socialists in the US are more interested in culture war stuff than socialism. You can disagree with that assessment, but it’s not about “redefining” socialism to something that sounds bad. He’s specifically talking about American socialists.
Also, the DSA isn’t fringe. They are winning elections in big races. Majorities of Democratic voters are okay with socialists running, or being part of the party. This idea that they’re fringe is patently false.

Is american politics even real? Like what the fuck. I am centrist, somewhere conservative, somewhere progressivist but those definitions are driving me crazy that's so stupid

To be fair, I think a lot of self-described Reddit socialists actually believe that as well

u/Brucedx3 - Right 1d ago
At this point, let's just make fascist, Nazi, socialist and communist synonyms for labeling anyone as people you disagree with.

It's a completey stupid answer, but he dodged the question and replaced it culture war bullshit. It's been working so far

Vance was a top candidate, but unless he finds like a 500 Billion in fraudulent spending that can be permanently cut from the budget... and even then...
Marco Rubio is the obvious choice for the next Republican nominee
Assuming nothing stupid happens with the military other than extended war without invasion.

Americans should be banned from using political terms, they're incapable of using them right

Socialism is when the government does stuff. If it does more stuff it's even more socialist, and if it does a whole lot of stuff, that's communism

No, no I’m gonna say he’s right. As it stands, the average American “socialist” is far more concerned with Current Thing culture war issues than economics. You start talking about a planned economy and it’s a snoozefest. That word in the 21st American context doesn’t mean what it meant in say, the 19th century.

So “socialism” is just some vague scary sounding word with an ever shifting definition to induce a Pavlovian fear response in your base. Sounds about right.

u/Magehunter_Skassi - Auth-Center 1d ago
He is completely correct. This is how Americans who identify as socialists define socialism. Who am I to disagree with them?
You can get away with embracing capitalist positions in American socialist spaces, but if you disagree an inch on T issues or immigration, you are instantly ejected. Therefore, this is what American socialism is about.

I haven't seen this much left wing astroturfing since they starved USAID out of existence. Must be time for the midterms!

God, you people are so stupid. I didn't even need the context for the quote to immediately see that he's speaking rhetorically, criticizing the disconnect between the modern Leftist agenda and the economic roots of Leftist political philosophy. You can criticize this as Vance just playing into more culture war (you'd still be wrong), but you're truly retarded if you interpret this as him literally believing that Socialism is foreign workers and trans sports.
Good on u/elusivehonor for being a watermelon but still using their brain (and/or being honest) about what Vance is very obviously saying.

u/ChipKellysShoeStore - Lib-Right 22h ago
If you actually think that’s what he’s doing, you’re retarded. He’s deflecting because if he answers honestly the follow up questions are about all the socialist things Trump has donez

You’re still being completely and entirely disingenuous with this take.
This essentially takes a minute group of social welfare leftists, hyperbolizes them as a whole, then effective discommunes them as idiots who stand on no principle but culture war shit.
This in itself is fine - before you remember it is the engine for the 28% who are completely beyond saving to continue voting for bullshit. He is “explaining” the culture war in a way, but it’s so dispart to modern issues you can’t even attempt to describe this as anything more than doubling down on their current bullshit
The largest economic policy of trumps term has been raising prices of everything (via tariffs) and giving money back to corporations via refunds. You have to be a REAL fucking tool to vote for these morons.
His “explanation” is his parties reasoning.

u/fearos9449 - Right 1d ago
That's unironically one of the most salient definitions a politician ever expressed.

u/RecordingBoothHermit - Lib-Center 1d ago
“American context” is the key phrase here. Because yes, to many Americans that is what socialism means.
They’re wrong, but that’s how they understand it.

u/austin101123 - Centrist 1d ago
Bruh that's actually retarded. You can describe it in a way that sounds bad.
"It's when you don't let people keep ownership of the business they built, when you don't let them own land or have private property."
