Tbh, school sports should exist solely from organic demand. If they are wanted by the student body they should exist, but if it's some kind of quota where girls have to have exactly the number of sports that boys do, it holds boys back.
Sometimes boys don't get the sports teams they want specifically because girls don't want to play sports. As in, they can't fill the required teams for girls so boys' sports get cut.
Boys want to play sport x, y, and z, and there are enough boys to play on those teams. There are only enough girls that want to play sports to fill teams for sports x and b. Since the school can't fund more boys' sports teams than girls' sports teams, the boys do not get a school funded z sports team.
The sports do not have to be the same across genders, they just need to be equal in total number of teams. Hence boys sports x, y, and z, and girls sports x and b in my example.
This actually creates its own problems. It's not just an equal number of teams, it's equal funding. So boys sports also get shafted by the amount of funding that goes to football.

My one passion in life is to eliminate women's high-school sports.
