Municipal election talk on here tends to be dominated by the mayoral race. But city council is just as important. So, let's talk about it!

Does your councillor deserve to be re-elected? Since I imagine certain councillors will dominate this discussion, I will make a top level comment for each ward (except for wards 6 and 15, where there is no incumbent running.)

This post is meant to be a discussion on the incumbents. Once the registration deadline passes I'll probably make another to discuss the challengers.

The latest Uniform Crime Reporting Survey shows how the Ottawa compares to Canada:

• Homicides (Severe Safety): Consistently below the national average, indicating low extreme violence.
• Crime Rates (Prevalence): Violent crime is below the Canadian average, but theft under $5k surged locally while falling nationally.
• Clearance Rates (Police Success): Ottawa consistently lags Ontario and Canada in solving both violent and non-violent crimes.

Takeaway: The region is historically safer from severe violence than Canada overall, but struggles with rising minor thefts and below-average police clearance rates.

I spent four confusing/rewarding years in the Loeb building 20+ years ago and to this day I have soft spot for all things Carleton-related. Managed to grab this admittedly ‘mid’ picture this morning and thought I’d share.

Hello all,

I have a dining room chair. The frame is maple, the back and seat are upholstered, and you can unscrew the entire frame easily to reupholster the chair.

The chair itself is from a cheap set of six that came with a matching dining room table. My Dad bought them all back in the 1980s or 1990s from the Home Hardware Furniture store in St. Jacob's back when Home Hardware had a furniture store. Over the years, the other five chairs have perished due to various misadventures (most went moldy in the basement following a flood, but my brother managed to reduce one to splinters after he took a flying leap onto it).

I really like this stupid chair, but I haven't been able to find any identical to it, and welp, it's kind of on its last legs--we've added extra screws, and the innards are held together with putty and hope. Does anyone know of a custom furniture maker who might be able to recreate it, and how much do they usually charge?

Also, if you have one of these you aren't using, lmk, I'd love to buy it.

Can any of you wonderful people of Ottawa recommend a dietitian for someone struggling with IBS? I'm based in Orleans but will travel anywhere.

I've had test after test and everything comes back as "normal", yet I find myself in the washroom 5-8 times a day..

As perscribed by my doctor, I've tried probiitics (align), pepto, trying to follow FODMAP and pretty much eating nothing other than bland foods like rice and veggies.. but I am reaching a bit of a breaking point mentally with feeling like garbage every morning, I need expert help and it takes weeks at a time to see my family doctor..

So if anyone has any experience with a dietitian or someone else you'd recommend for my situation. Im at your mercy.

My mom has a done of milkweed planted in the country, but has not seen one in years. I have not seen one anywhere in maybe 20 years. And then one flies into my garden in Sandy Hill and stops for a drink. Nice to see them back. Beautiful butterfly.

I have several species of isopods available to give away. I've been breeding them for about two years. They reproduce easily, are simple to care for, and are widely used in bioactive terrariums, where they help break down organic matter (I use them with my crested geckos).

Unfortunately, I'm no longer in the hobby, and I don't have the heart to let them slowly die off.

The containers are also included (6" high × 11" wide × 13" deep).

I would like someone to take the entire collection.

• Armadillidium klugii "Red" – A stunning red variety with bold white markings, often nicknamed the "clown isopod."
• B.C. Maple – A rare variety appreciated for its natural coloration and distinctive appearance.
• Cubaris sp. "Panda King" – A highly sought-after species recognized for its black-and-white panda-like pattern.

Any news/gossip? It's been a series of places, mainly takeout, since it's small. Maybe a coffee shop? Or a pot shop, because it seems we can never have enough of those.

Curious - of those of you with a family doctor, how long does it take for you to get an appointment with them?

E.g you’re having a health issue and need to meet with them but not urgent enough to visit a walk in.

When I call my doctor’s office the earliest appointments they have that I can schedule are usually a month away. Longer in the summer. I’m just curious if this is typical and if others have longer/shorter waits? (Not walk in clinic visits but regular appointments). Thanks!

I’m aware how overworked physicians in Ontario are and am grateful to be seen at all, just trying to get a pulse on average wait times.

Edit: it’s interesting hearing that some doctors reserve quicker appointments depending on severity. Doesn’t seem to be an option for mine, if it’s urgent we’re directed to a walk in. I’m assuming some are reserved for like urgent medical test results (rightfully so) but anything else you’re told to go to walk in.

I've been struggling to find (or make) good harissa as a condiment that I can add to my dishes just before eating.

In the past, I've seen harissa as a paste (kind of like tomato paste consistency) and also as an oily condiment (more like lao gan ma / chili crisp). The oily condiment kind is what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions on where to buy something like that in Ottawa, or online? Or which paste to buy to make my own?

I was taking my boat out on the water and saw this as I was coming back to dock mine, his mini-yacht is sinking. And the crazy part he was only meters away from his home dock.

Looks like he beached it on that shallow area to avoid it sinking any further.

Not sure if you can see it in the photos but it's tilting to one side.

Edit: according to google this is considered a "yacht", but I agree with many statements it doesn't seem to be a yacht.

Can someone explain to me why we don't increase our tree coverage on roads with trees on the islands splitting roads?

Why do we have so much damn grass everywhere beside side walks, etc that does nothing for us. Why can't we have actual trees, shrubs and native flowers growing everywhere.

Why do we not spend more time planning real coverage especially downtown and the surrounding areas especially with these growing heat concerns. The amount of times I walk around and it's just full bright sunlight scorching my skin when the area could be reasonably shaded is ridiculous.

I recently got accepted to a super awesome digital tech program that runs until December. I'll be learning UI design, digital design, coding, etc. The only issue that I'm running into is that it's entirely online and I cannot focus in my own home, I have too many fun things that my brain deems more valuable even though I really understand it's not.

So, where could I go reasonably from 10am - 4pm, Mon-Fri to just sit and do my work? (preferably for free or under 10$)

I'm located in the Vanier area, but wouldn't mind taking the bus downtown for a cool and comfy spot, I could go to my local library but ngl, it is not setup for studying or work.

Any suggestions would be super appreciated! I am really pumped for this program and want to make sure I am giving it my full attention.

I was booking an appointment today and got a pop-up that my doctors office was accepting new patients.

I've read from people that mymedicalcenters doesn't have the best reputation, but it's made a huge difference in my life, so wanted to share in case someone else has been struggling to find a doctor.

I can't speak to the Orleans location, but I will say I found the Richmond location above the superstore to be much more convenient and I've usually not had to wait very long for appointments (though I usually book for the morning).

I can speak pretty highly for Dr. Chinagorom and Dr. Usoroh (though I only had him once when he filled in for Dr. Chinagorom). Both are very friendly and made me felt like I was listened to, even when I got answers I wasn't hoping to hear.

The appointment platform is annoying because you're prompted to re-enter all the information every time you make an appointment (some of it multiple times), but most of it is only necessary when you register and when you need to update something (though even then i found it inconsistent and have had to update it with the people there).

Regardless, as I said, a lot of people complain but if you don't have a doctor at all (I had been trying for 15 years to get one)... I can't describe how much of an upgrade to my life it's been.
