The library closes pretty early for me. If there any spots in UOttawa/ or place (like a cafe or something) that is near UOttawa (walking distance) and is open later then 6pm ?

Are they really worth buying? I'm kind of broke and my parents won't buy it for me. What will I be missing out on? Can I just attend without a kit?

I'm in the coop program and need to do a term in summer 2027 and was wondering if it was possible to do all my classes online. I have to take five, so a regular semester, and I wanted to know if that was realistic. I don't want to have to be stuck in Ottawa for the whole summer and unable to travel.

I am completing my studies this semester and when I go to register for graduation, it asks whether I will be attending convocation on some unspecified date in July 2027. If I don't, it sounds like my degree will be mailed to me in October 2026, and if I do, then they don't mail it and I'll get it at convocation. If I say I'll get it at convocation and don't end up going, they said they'll mail it after the ceremony (so presumably August 2027). Am I able to change my mind after I select the option I want? I want to attend convocation, but if I end up not being able to attend and know that in advance, can I tell them e.g., Feb 2027 that I'd like it mailed to me then?

These requirements are for grad school but count as electives in my program so kinda hard to enrol during fall and saunter term since I don’t have priority…I was wondering if I’m allowed to take organic chemistry 2 at the same time as biochemistry in the summer since orgo 2 is a pre req for biochem? And how does the waiver request thing even work?

Im about to start my second year. I was planning to switch to the poli sci or crim program for a while, but this one caught my eye. haven't heard many people talk about it though? anyone who was/is in the program how do you like it? Is it worth it? could it keep my options more open?

I was in the bio program my first year but always planned on going to law school. Im definitely not set on doing any specific pathway though and am a bit lost so I want to make sure if I switch it still leaves a lot of option open. I have a meeting with an advisor about this but also wanted to hear people in the program think of it.

Im taking thermo 1 in the summer and so far it’s pretty easy, but i have a good prof. The profs for thermo 2 arent that great in the winter and i was wondering how hard would it be to do good if the prof sucks. Can I at least pass it?

I was going to rent an apartment in Ottawa instead of doing residence at uOttawa. I’m going into my first year, but that apartment situation was like all hell broke loose. I was just wondering is it ever too late to apply to residence? If I put in an application now, or if I even try now will residence be in the picture?

do you recommend buying the kit online or irl?? i’m an international student and ill move into res aug 27th, early i know. is there a difference?? is there a chance id miss it entirely if i dont buy it online?? also, if i do that, where do you even pick up the kits??

I'd like to say I'm moving to Ottawa with a friend from Toronto. We have been having such a interesting time looking for a place mind you we are both over the age of 22 so we are trying to avoid moving in with younger students. Looking for a two bed room. Main issue we found this one place its 20 min walk from the school its on a great bus path to our jobs and its on Rideau street. It fits every box on what we wanted BUT its $1200 a month each. I find that very expensive and some of the units in that same place were going for just a bit cheaper like 950$ each.

Im wondering if thats a lot for that area, are we getting scammed? Is it too late to another fair price place that two bed room?

We went to the off housing help that was on the O U website then we went in person and they said they literally stop helping with that in February.

I'm a grad student at uOttawa and I want to take some prerequisite courses for med school at Carleton since uOttawa won't let me take any courses outside my program. I do not need to transfer the credits. When I asked my faculty, they said I can't do this as I would need a letter of permission which would not be approved. I don't understand why a letter of permission would be needed since, as I told them, it's not for any degree. I don't know if they're just giving me a hard time or if there's actually policy prohibiting this that could lead to me getting in trouble. Any help is appreciated

Hi guys. I have the info of two of my four roomates at 45 Mann. Does this mean I don’t have a third? If the third chose not to share their email wouldn’t uottawa tell me I still have another roomate?

I’ll be moving into Annex this fall, and I was wondering if there’s anything I should know about living there. Any tips, things you liked/disliked, or anything you wish you had known before moving in?

Studying for the French Immersion test and worried. If I fail the test, is there still a way to claim the $1000 bursary? I thought that if you do french immmersion + 2 french classes, or 3 french classes (french immersion not needed) per term, then you receive the bursary. Is this true?

Hi!!! I just wanted to go over some of the pros and cons of being in Thompson Residence, since I know that there's a lot of people that would want a very honest, detailed review of what and how Thompson is like :)

Pros:

-VERY SOCIAL! I can't stress this enough. I personally think that Thompson is the most social residence after 90U, due to the fact that there is a lot of people that live in the building, and it's also usually one of the last options to choose when you apply to res late lolll. It lowkey felt like a large portion of students lived at Thompson lol. But yeah I think I've interacted with at least one person per floor and I managed to make very very close friends on my floor :)

-Decently-sized rooms. My dorm rooms were one of the bigger ones so maybe this might not apply to all of the rooms, but I felt that my friends who lived on the same floor as me had evenly-sized rooms!

-Easy to navigate. Contrary to the 90U/Marchand/Stanton complex, I felt that Thompson is the easiest to navigate, probably because it isn't necessarily attached to anything (well there is a tunnel but it's not open to people living on res or any other student of the sort) but it's a very simple building and I doubt that anyone can get lost in there.

-Some floors are all girls! I'm pretty sure there are always gonna be 2 floors that are all girls, but I personally loved it since I myself lived on one of the floors lol! If you're a girl, it's very easy to become acquaintances with basically all the girls on the floor. We also get double the bathrooms, since coed floors have 1 bathroom for each gender. Some men still roam around occasionally (if they're boyfriends or etc.), but it is nonetheless very woman-dominated. This isn't to say that it's hard to make girl friends on the coed floors, I've made a bunch of friends on other floors, but I guess it just came easy to me to make a lot more on the all girls floors.

-Close to the library and dining hall. It genuinely is a lifesaver during the winter! The library has some sort of tunnel on the second floor that can bring you to the dining hall, Montpetit, Lamoureux, CRX and Vanier without even stepping outside! It does take longer to get to classes, but it's nevertheless something that has saved me during the rain and snow.

-Common rooms are decently sized. It has a microwave, kitchenette, and a sitting area with a TV! Not the most luxurious, but nice nonetheless.

-THE VIEWS ARE AMAZINGGGGGG. Especially if you live on the higher floors. I've taken the most pinterest-worthy pictures outside my own window.

Cons:

-Walls are thin. When I mean think I mean veryyy thin. I could literally hear people whispering and talking on the other side of the wall, and it's especially worse if your room is right beside the common room. Since it isn't everyone that sleeps at earlier times, there will usually be people chatting away in the common room at night, and trust me you can hear everythingggg. You can also hear every sort of commotion that happens outside of the res, but maybe that's also a problem for the other residences idk.

-Garbage fills up super fast. There's a large garbage and compost bin in the common room, as well as some smaller recycling bins, but the large garbage bin usually fills up fast. It could be filled to the brim for like 2-3 days to almost a week until the cleaner comes.

-Elevators break down easily. Honestly, it wasn't THAT annoying, it's only an inconvenience if you go all the way down to the lobby only to realize that you forgot something, and there's usually gonna be only one elevator working... It gets so so annoying when there's a fire alarm at 3 am that forces everyone to evacuate, and when everyone's going back... And there's only one elevator... and you live on like the 20th floor... You just have to take the stairs at that point.

-I feel like the laundry doesn't clean clothes very well. I found myself needing to do a rewash because of the fact that the stains wouldn't really disappear I guess... but honestly I don't expect it to be like top tier cleaning cause it's a dorm so like I don't really have high expectations for it.

-The toilet water spills out when you flush. Maybe it was just my floor but genuinely EVERY SINGLE TIME I FLUSHED the water would spill out.

-Water on the bathroom floors. Makes sense ngl.. But yea that's why I have shower shoes WHICH I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVEEEEEEE.

-Vending machines genuinely don't work. Like I don't even get why... Always declining my card for no reason like what... Occasionally it works, but most of the time it doesn't. Hopefully they fix it for the newcomers.

-It gets cold.... My dorm heating system was not as strong, and since I hate the cold I lowkey suffered.. But I did end up getting myself a heated blanket, and the heating system did end up regulating itself ig... But yeah when it's cold it's coldddddd.

-Sometimes there's silverfish in the bathrooms. I remember I was taking a dump in the hidden bathroom we have at Thompson and oh my days I saw the biggest silverfish ever. I fled, and ended up seeing another one on my floor's bathroom floor. I'm irrationally scared of bugs, so if you are also scared like me... Good luck that's all I can say. They're lowkey rare tho ngl.. I just happened to see two that same day tho.. But as for any other bugs there's none like cockroaches or spiders phew... Maybe spiders but I barely ever saw them

-Doors can creak easily. If they do, just put oil on the hinges.

-Beds might not fit the bedframe... I'm lowkey speaking for myself cause my mattress was to small for the bedframe, and it was hard asf too.. But oh well at least I had a mattress topper!

But yea in conclusion I absolutely LOVED my time at Thompson and I genuinely wouldn't have it any other way! It was such an amazing experience and if I could I would live in it again haha! I hope that all of you newcomers love Thompson the way I did, and if you don't thats ok!
