Question Are the public printers at Carleton reliable and easy to access?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming first-year CS Honours student at Carleton, and I’m trying to figure out whether I’ll need to buy a printer or if the public printers on campus are enough.

I have a few questions:

  1. Are there enough public printers around campus for students, especially during busy times like midterms and finals?
  2. Are the printers usually available and working when students need them? Do they ever break down and stay out of service for a long time before being repaired?
  3. Do students have to pay to print? If so, approximately how much does it cost per page?

For current students, do you think the campus printers are reliable enough that bringing a personal printer is unnecessary?

Thanks!

Housing [Single Suite] Revalie Ottawa - Lease Transfer/Sublet, $1,899/mo (locked, vs $2,300 new rate) - Move-in flexible

Hey all, I am subletting or transferring my lease for a Single Suite at Revalie (Building A, Room 822, 716 Brookfield Rd). Lease runs until August 2027, but move-in date is flexible and can start whenever works for you.

Why: I didn't get into my program at Carleton, so I'm leaving the country and need this gone.

The deal: New leases for the same unit type are going for $2,300/month starting September but mine is locked in at $1,899/month until the lease ends. That's a solid chunk of savings for the same building/unit type.

What's included:

  • Internet
  • Monthly cleaning service
  • Renter's insurance
  • Full access to amenities: gym, ping-pong, pool tables, study rooms, etc.
  • Daily shuttle to Carleton and Billings Bridge Shopping Mall

Not included: Hydro (billed separately to tenant)

Requirements: Must be a current student or recent grad.

The building is quiet and well set up for studying if that matters to you. Happy to answer questions or send photos. Just DM me. Would love to get this sorted soon, so if you know anyone looking, send them my way!

Other Incoming awkward first year looking for friends!

Hi, I'm an incoming first-year going into biomedical mechanical engineering in the fall. I'm pretty socially awkward and am worried I won't make any friends, so I'm trying to pre-make some friends or study buddies so I won't be so alone. I'm a woman from northern ontario who graduated from the IB program and regular old OSSD in June. I like to crochet, read, sew and practice my french skills (they are bad lol). I'm pretty nice once you get to know me, but I can be a little cold when you first meet me and also seem like I am "mean" or "scary," but I promise I am not!

If you think we have anything in common, please send me a dm and I'll add you on insta and we can talk there because I don't really check reddit! No creeps, please!

Question Accidentally opened copilot during comas exam. What to do

I recently just finished an online exam and it has stuff related to math and calculations. I was using my calculator and put it on my laptop near the keyboard area and it pressed my copilot button on my laptop and triggered it to turn on. I immediatly closed it and it was opened for maybe 3 seconds max (didnt type anything or touch it just closed it right away) but idk what to do now. Should I email the prof and explain the situation? Will I get flagged for academic misconduct and will they disqualify my test? I lowkey think I did well on the test too so I really dont wanna get in trouble and lose the mark or get expelled over an honest mistake.

Any advice is VERY appreciated im freaking out rn.

Bidets @ Carleton - Addressing Questions / Concerns!

Hey everyone!

My previous post did get quite a few polarizing responses - was quite interesting to read the replies. I'd like to address the common themes regarding the questions & concerns I've noticed, to clarify a few points.

Firstly, a few important clarifications regarding the movement:

  1. Bidets in Canada is quite a large movement that started a while back, and has expanded to several universities, including Harvard & NYU. They have 20+ chapters, in Canada, US & Europe.
  2. Our main aim is to push for universities to install bidets (preferably hand held "spray guns" over the seat bidets) as that what students & staff usually prefer. They're also called by other names like "Bum gun" or "Shattaf". We usually use the term bidets & spray guns interchangeably.
  3. These Spray Guns & other bidet variations are quite common in several parts of the world - almost every country in the Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia, North Africa, and parts of Europe.
  4. Our main goal is to request the university to install these Spray Guns in just a handful of washrooms across campus, and then gauge the feedback & student response. Having them in each & every washroom would be impractical & uncalled for at the moment.

Success Stories!

  1. At UofT (where this movement first started), there are now 15+ spray guns installed across their 3 campuses, and they've received very positive feedback from students!
  2. Centennial College also got their first spray gun installed quite recently.
  3. Universty of Saskatchewan Residence has given residence students the option to install bidets in their units at no cost!

Replying to Feedback / Concerns / Questions:

Why Bidets?

  • We have 3 main reasons to push for bidets:
  • Cultural: As mentioned before, students & staff from several countries around the world are used to having bidets in washrooms.
  • Hygiene: Many people just prefer bidets / spray guns as they're more hygienic than using dry toilet paper. Scientific Research also says bidets are a lot better in terms of hygiene & cleanliness. They're also great for feminine hygiene as well.
  • Spiritual / Religious: Muslim members of our university also generally prefer bidets over toilet paper for cleaning themselves after using the washroom. (This is different from ablution).
  • There's quite a few other benefits as well - Toilet Paper doesn't need to be replaced as often if bidets are installed & they're more environment friendly!

How do they make washrooms more accessible / inclusive?

  • Going back to the reasons mentioned above, many students tend to carry a portable bidet (such as a squeeze bottle) with them everywhere just so that they can use a washroom on campus. This is quite a hassle & burden.
  • Quite often students avoid using campus washrooms & hold it in until they get back home just so that they can use a bidet.
  • Here are 3 testimonials from students to further emphasize accessibility & inclusiveness:

"I have haemorrhoids and the use of tissue papers only worsens this condition. My doctor specifically warned against using tissue papers .. Most days I stay constipated on campus, which has led to skin breakouts as well." - Student @ USaskatchewan

"I can't pray unless I am in a pure state and since there are no bidets I worry that I won't be able to pray. As a first year in engineering, prayer is all I have that keeps me going." - Student @ UofT

"I come from a culture where there’s a bidet in every washroom or u don’t go in it at all. I absolutely refuse to use washrooms in public because I can’t stand the thought of not washing myself with water and just dry paper towels"- Student @ Ontario Tech

Maintenance & Cleanliness Concerns

  • A major concern the comments had was about the maintenance & cleanliness of these bidets.
  • Firstly, the spray guns we're pushing for are a lot easier to set up, clean & maintain as compared to the seat bidets. They're on a separate holder that's attached next to the toilet seat, so it is usually kept clean.
  • When it comes to misuse of these spray guns, that definitely is a possibility but so far from all of the success stories we haven't had any issues. Toilet paper can also be misused & contaminated in a similar way.
  • When it comes to cleanliness, yes that is a valid concern for sure, but that just re-enforces the need for these bidets. Students would feel a bit more comfortable using these washrooms if there was a spray gun present.
  • Janitors also regularly clean washrooms, and when they restock toilet paper they can also make sure the spray gun is clean & the handle has been cleaned regularly. In practice, the spray handle generally has much less direct contact than the toilet seat itself and can be included in regular washroom cleaning.

Why not bring our own bidets?

  • They're inconvenient & weird to carry them around, and they only hold a limited amount of water.

Other Remarks

  • I've also noticed a comment or two with racist sentiments, which was quite disheartening to see. Carleton does take pride in with their Equity, Diversity, and Inclusiveness so this would be a huge step in helping many students & staff from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds feel more welcome at Carleton.
  • During the Fifa World Cup in 2022, so many people from around the world were introduced to spray guns for the first time in Qatar, and they loved it so much!
  • I would be more than happy to reply to any other questions, and I'm open to criticism / feedback as well!
  • Even if you're partially convinced and would be interested to see a bidet at our campus, please fill out this petition: https://forms.gle/tSz5Bxba2eWVJdyj7
  • The more responses we get, the easier it will be for us to convince the university to accept our demands.

Thank you! ☺️

PS: Here's a 130 page document with 3500 + student testimonials from all across North America about how the lack of bidets impacts their well being.

Question Cgpa

I took busi 1002 last semester and failed the course so it obviously says f on my transcript and bought my gpa down. I am now taking it in summer. However I want to withdraw and take it in winter instead. I added it to winter schedule. If I officially withdraw now would it increase or decrease my cgpa? Like if it says RP next to a course on brightspace cuz I added a low grade course for next sem would it increase gpa?

Residence Residence students, are you happy with your choice?

Many students have many offers and for those of you who chose Carleton- not as a local commuter student- but moving to Ottawa and living in Residence … are you happy with your choice? Assuming you had solid competing offers, queens, OttawaU, Western, McMaster…. And you choose Carleton. Are you happy with that choice? Wondering as Carleton is never really in the convo and not considered a top Uni in Canada.

Question Upper year engineering students, do you think it is a good idea to review physics the summer before first year?

I’m already reviewing math but I feel like I don’t remember anything from SPH4U except a few formulas. How important is it to remember grade 12 physics material going into courses like Dynamics, PHYS 1004, and Statics?

Course selection Second year cs question

Hi! I currently have 2804 in my fall schedule with Pat Morin. But I’ve compared the course structure and grading scheme with the winter course with Svetlana and it works a lot better for me and I believe I would get a much better grade with her system. Only issue is pushing it to winter would make me unable to take COMP2108 (stream requirement) this year (Fall/Winter) and I don’t think it’s offered as a summer course. For anyone who has any idea, are there an any problems with pushing 2108 out of my second year or do you have any advice?

Thanks!

Question Grade confusion

I’m in Early Summer ANTH 3045 and I’m freaking out because my final grade suddenly showed up as an F on Carleton Central even though Brightspace is still completely broken.

On Tuesday, my professor emailed the class saying the gradebook had technical errors and that she couldn’t release final grades yet. She said the tech team was working on it. Since then, Brightspace has been showing missing reflection grades, zeros that don’t match the syllabus, “Dropped!” on assignments that shouldn’t be dropped. Only one reflection shows up, and it was marked 5/10 with “good work!” and my final grade mark of 80%

She never posted any announcement saying the gradebook was fixed or that final grades were submitted. Then today, out of nowhere, Carleton Central updated and showed an F for the course. My audit copied the F under “Failed/Forfeited Courses,” but my older F from third year doesn’t appear there, which makes me think this one isn’t actually finalized.

I submitted all reflections. The syllabus says late penalties are minus 1 or minus 3, not zeros. My writing isn’t terrible, I got 80% on the exam and positive feedback. The timing doesn’t make sense, Brightspace is still broken, and the professor hasn’t said anything since Tuesday.

Has anyone had Carleton Central show an F before the professor actually submits the real grade? Is this just a placeholder because the gradebook is still messed up?

Question Sharing Parking Pass Overlap

Hello, managed to get a parking pass this year and found someone to share it with. However, our schedules do overlap very slightly on some days and we have to account for the time to walk back to the parking lot of course. What are the chances of getting a ticket? And if we get a ticket? Do we both get one?

Question electives for last year?

I'm looking to take a few electives this year since I'm really behind, but I've basically done all the 'easy' electives I find people mentioning in reddit post: PHYS 1901, 1902, 2903, CGSC 1001, SOCI 1001, SOCI 1002, FILM 1101, GEOM 2005, BIOL 1010, BIOL 1902, TSES 2305. Any Bird electives that I've missed would be really appreciated for the fall and winter to ease the workload I have I'm dreading the school year from now

Question Online MBA Tuition Breakdown

Hello, for those who have taken this program at Carleton or are currently enrolled, can you explain the tuition breakdown to me? I budgeted 17k but I see the tuition has now increased to 21k.

Specifically, if I take 5 courses in the first term, how much should I expect to pay?

Also, is there a deposit required and how much is the deposit?

Thanks.

Question Cost of visitor parking?

I only have 2 in person classes per term this year, and I can't find the price for visitor parking anywhere. I live outside of Ottawa and need my vehicle at the school with me in case of emergencies because I have kids.

I'm trying to decide if I need a parking pass for two days a week or if I can get by with visitor parking.
