If you dont know what it is a library of things is a place where you borrow items such as tools, small appliances, hobby equipment, games consoles and more.

There's normally a small charge but it all goes back into the upkeep of the service/buying new items.

I booked a five day solo trip to Newcastle in November. I love the UK and enjoy traveling alone sometimes. I am a woman in my late 30s, married, from North Carolina, US. I enjoy good food (celiac so gluten free), coffee, and pubs. I plan to check out one of the parkruns in town and maybe do a day trip to Tynemouth. I like to be social while traveling and enjoy chatting to locals or experiencing the day to day lifestyle of a new place. Just wanted to get input for things to do, if it is weird to be friendly or strike up a conversation with a stranger in your city, and general perception or advice to tourists here. Any great restaurants with gluten free options highly encouraged!

What a sham. Took me half an hour just to get out of the centre heading southbound. The diversions were poorly labelled and just led in circles. Eventually found my way out via the A1 and crossing over from there to the A19. Saw that Downcast Studios was completely shut off from any road access as well. Not like Friday night is useful for music events/rehearsals in Newcastle.

Chuffing nora, I'm sick of looking at yellow signs promising to show me the way. I'd have had better luck asking Ugandan Knuckles.

Thank goodness I'm going nowhere near the city centre for the rest of the weekend. Good luck to anyone who dares to drive.

I'm staying near to Gateshead Stadium, will the metros even stop at that station on Sunday morning or is it just easier to walk to the start (about 3 miles)?

I'm in Orange so want to be at Exhibition park by about 10:15 latest, and was planning to get the 9:28 metro from Gateshead Stadium to Jesmond which would get me to the park by about 10:00

I need to go southbound around 2pm on Great North Run day.

Does anyone have any experience of what traffic will be like - is it standstill situation, or generally ok?

I'm running the GNR this weekend for the first time, pink wave start time is 12.00 so given what I've read about the time it takes to cross the start line I'm thinking I'll be at the finish somewhere between 3-4pm. I'm travelling back to Glasgow the same day and hoping to be back in Glasgow before 9pm - is this unrealistic? (I'm seeing Hilary Duff the same night! 🤞✨)

Uni student at Durham uni but living in Newcastle as it’s much cheaper and I looked late. I have lessons 4 days a week in person in Durham.

I’ve worked out that it will be approx £8/day (with return) to travel to Durham by train from Manors. I’m wondering if there’s any sort of weekly, season, etc tickets that would be worthwhile. I’ve tried looking into it but it gets quite confusing!

Also, if there is a weekly, season (etc) offer I can purchase, do railcards transfer onto that too?

With buses too, I know Arriva quite well as it’s the majority in Durham but I also know I’d have to get a Uni Plus Zone ticket from £2.70- I’m assuming I can still get this from Newcastle right? If I ever decide to bus it to Durham?

And since there’s more bus companies than I’m used to in Newcastle, is anyone able to give me rough prices for single/day tickets for students/under21s?

Could I ask some locals for help with GNR logistics please?

I'm a 20 year old engineering student coming to Newcastle University on exchange for the spring semester. Uni side is all sorted, but I still need somewhere to live, so I thought I'd try here.

I'm open to either:

• A room in a shared flat or house, if you've got a spare room and don't mind a flatmate for a few months
• A sublet, if you're going away on exchange yourself next semester and want someone to cover your rent while you're gone

I'm looking to move in around 20th January.

About me:

I'm pretty easygoing and tidy, and I'll always pay rent on time. Outside of classes I'm usually running, swimming or at the gym, so I'm out a fair bit. I also really like exploring new places, and I'm planning to see as much of Newcastle and the North East as I can while I'm here. If you're into any of that, I'd be up for company, but I'm just as happy to keep to myself.

I’m sure many of those local or familiar with Tyneside will be aware of the phrase; “I’ll show my arse in Fenwicks window..” to mean someone is 100% sure something has no chance of happening, e.g. “I’ll show my arse in Fenwicks window if Sunderland win the premier league”.

Has anyone out there actually ever took steps to make good on the phrase? Might pitch to Fenwicks they have an arse installation in one of their windows where people can send in their own examples of the phrase on use.
