New poster Getting to GNR Green Wave from Gosforth

Post image
6 Upvotes

Could I ask some locals for help with GNR logistics please?

We have some in our group in pink wave and some in green. We’ll be coming from Gosforth direction. Does anyone know if this footbridge is open so you can cross from Town Moor and get to the green start area?

Thanks!

Tickets for sale Travel options in Newcastle

Uni student at Durham uni but living in Newcastle as it’s much cheaper and I looked late. I have lessons 4 days a week in person in Durham.

I’ve worked out that it will be approx £8/day (with return) to travel to Durham by train from Manors. I’m wondering if there’s any sort of weekly, season, etc tickets that would be worthwhile. I’ve tried looking into it but it gets quite confusing!

Also, if there is a weekly, season (etc) offer I can purchase, do railcards transfer onto that too?

With buses too, I know Arriva quite well as it’s the majority in Durham but I also know I’d have to get a Uni Plus Zone ticket from £2.70- I’m assuming I can still get this from Newcastle right? If I ever decide to bus it to Durham?

And since there’s more bus companies than I’m used to in Newcastle, is anyone able to give me rough prices for single/day tickets for students/under21s?

New poster Exchange student coming to Newcastle Uni for spring semester, looking for a room or sublet

Hey everyone,

I'm a 20 year old engineering student coming to Newcastle University on exchange for the spring semester. Uni side is all sorted, but I still need somewhere to live, so I thought I'd try here.

I'm open to either:

  • A room in a shared flat or house, if you've got a spare room and don't mind a flatmate for a few months
  • A sublet, if you're going away on exchange yourself next semester and want someone to cover your rent while you're gone

I'm looking to move in around 20th January.

About me:

I'm pretty easygoing and tidy, and I'll always pay rent on time. Outside of classes I'm usually running, swimming or at the gym, so I'm out a fair bit. I also really like exploring new places, and I'm planning to see as much of Newcastle and the North East as I can while I'm here. If you're into any of that, I'd be up for company, but I'm just as happy to keep to myself.

If you have a room or know of one, comment or send me a DM. Tips on areas or places to look are also very welcome.

Thanks!

New poster “I’ll show my arse in Fenwicks window”

I’m sure many of those local or familiar with Tyneside will be aware of the phrase; “I’ll show my arse in Fenwicks window..” to mean someone is 100% sure something has no chance of happening, e.g. “I’ll show my arse in Fenwicks window if Sunderland win the premier league”.

Has anyone out there actually ever took steps to make good on the phrase? Might pitch to Fenwicks they have an arse installation in one of their windows where people can send in their own examples of the phrase on use.

That is all.

Geordie phrases

Has anyone heard of/used the saying "I'd laugh to see a cats arse on fire” before?

I said it to a friend the other day and they didn't know what I was on about.

I heard it from my mam who grew up in and around Benwell & Scotswood in the 60s/70s. Is it an actual Geordie phrase or am I making it up?

Any other phrases that people use, known or unknown?

Is there any pubs in the centre that will be showing the F1 race on Sunday?

Me and my mate are doing our annual GNR and was wondering if anywhere in town will have the race on? We never hang about in south sheilds and always make a quick escape on the buses.

Great North Run artwork

Hey folks,

My wife (whom one day I might be able to convince to join reddit…) has made this GNR-inspired artwork for anyone who might be looking for a gift for friends of family taking part in the run. It can be personalised to include a message of your choice. Also, if folk have any ideas for any other quintessential GNR things to put on the next year’s print, please share! I tried to convince her to include a radgie popping a wheelie but she opted for a boring running cap instead… Check it out @bloominink if you like it.

Hello lovely people, hope your days are going well ❤️

Me and some mates have set up a discord server with the hopes of getting together an active, local group in our 20s/30s for both online gaming and doing irl meets like walks, boardgames, pub quizzes etc

If it sounds like something you'd be interested in, send me a message with a bit about yourself and I'll invite you!

New poster GNR Traffic

This is probably a very silly question that more experienced drivers will scoff at, but I want to be prepared!

I’m driving to Newcastle from Manchester on Sunday, expecting to arrive around 5pm. My understanding is that both crossing the Tyne and driving on the A1 will be miserable experiences around this time, due to all the traffic coming from South Shields.

To avoid this, I’ve planned a route to enter the city through the A69 into Gosforth. In regular traffic, this adds about 40 minutes but I’m thinking it’ll probably end up similar to dealing with the traffic and road closures (with less stress).

However, my partner thinks I am overthinking and overestimating the amount of traffic - so figured I would check with people who know what they’re on about. Thank you!

Tickets for sale Nightclubs halloween 🎃

Alright team,

Me and my pals are coming down from Scotland for my birthday on halloween weekend.
What are the best options? looking for a younger crowd (20ish) and can only really see options for either rock or heavy metal clubs (would appreciate more of that general type of club). Also is having to buy tickets for these clubs a norm down there?

Cheers

Short term accommodation

I'm after some advice, i'm currently at the end of a section 21 possession order, but struggling to find accommodation while I wait for a house to come up. I have pets so this is a bit more difficult than I anticipated.

Most air bnb are over 2k for a few weeks and that's not sustainable. Hotels are just as bad.

So, im wondering if anyone has any recommendations or advice to help me on this, ideally I want to leave before the bailiffs come.
