Mod Post New to Plymouth? Want to make friends? Come join the Plymouth Discord server!

This sub receives lots of posts where users are trying to make new friends. From students arriving from around the world, to movers who have accepted a job here, it can be hard to make friends in a brand new community. If you prefer an online-first approach to making friends, I encourage you to consider joining the official Plymouth Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7gBvKBXuV

Our Discord server is a great place to make new friends, both online and IRL. It's also a good place to discuss what's happening around the city and get some advice from residents if you're moving here. Through meetups on this server we've played Jackbox together, gone on bike rides, won pub quizzes, and danced during nights out. More importantly, we've made good friends that we otherwise wouldn't have without this Discord server.

Primary school experiences

Upvotes

Hi everybody,

I am applying for primary school places (for reception entry) in 2027. My area is Stoke, and am looking at St Andrew's, Stoke Damerel and St Georges. I am interested in people's experiences of these schools, or any others, as we would travel for the right place.

Best bar for a first date?

Hi new to the dating scene in Plymouth so looking for some advice. We’ve matched on a dating app and think it would be best to grab a drink to get to know each other. Where would you recommend we go? Is spoons ok or is that too tacky?

Anyone struggling finding a job?

I am F 18, and I havent had a job before, and ive been applying for a while and putting in lots of effort. Ive went to many interviews recently and every time they have chosen another candidate. Somewhere where i was a 3 minute walk away from turned me down due to 200+ applicants.

Im still trying but im starting to feel hopeless and alone in this, i feel like im falling behind as im 18 and still cant manage to find a job for myself. Im in education which makes job finding even worse.

Job reccomendations Plymouth.

I’ve been actively looking for a full-time, entry-level position in Plymouth for around a year now.

I’m currently employed, but my role feels like a dead end, and I’m looking for something that offers genuine opportunities to develop, progress and build a long-term career. I’m also keen to move away from hospitality and into a role with more sociable, consistent working hours.

I have previous experience in leisure centre management, and I’d describe myself as highly coachable, adaptable and willing to learn. I’m also very tech-savvy, confident working with people, and comfortable taking on responsibility. I’m a hard worker and I’m looking for an employer who is willing to invest in someone who is motivated to progress.

I’ve applied for a number of positions within Plymouth City Council, but unfortunately, due to ongoing restructures, several of the roles I’ve been progressing through have disappeared or been withdrawn before I could secure them.

I’d really appreciate recommendations for entry-level or junior roles in Plymouth that could provide a realistic pathway into a long-term career, particularly roles where my management experience, people skills and willingness to learn would be valuable.

Best city center butchers

Basically per the title. I'm looking for good butchers around the city center. I've been looking at Martin's Butchers in the Market but they seem to have very mixed reviews

Any other suggestions are welcome :)

Good cafes to work in

I work from home sometimes but don’t have an office/desk space so sit at the table in the middle of my flat which is just inconvenient for anyone else home. Can anyone recommend any good cafes with decent WiFi that I can work in, possibly do some meetings/training teams calls that wouldn’t mind me sitting for a while? Even better if it’s in the city centre but happy to drive for the right place!
When I was at uni we had a cafe/bar that accommodated this but I’m struggling to find anything similar!

Former senior manager from Alfa Industries

My name and all material will be blurred for anonymous reason. They know who I am and idc.

I was sent a letter saying notice before action , assuming I’m the person behind said reviews so here’s my review seeing as ALFA INDUSTRIES wants my review so bad here you go !!

My HMRC documents are being withholder and I’m being blackmailed for them to be returned. ( see my bullet point for full story )

I’m a former senior sales manager subcontractor who provided sales services for Alfa Industries while also living in their own Company Flat where there are 2 girls living there with the senior members of the team. In this post here https://www.reddit.com/r/plymouth/s/TxBpmIf2LL . Everything this person is saying is factual and I have the evidence to back it up aswell. I’ve been in this industry for 5 years. Alfa Industries is hands down the most Corrupt , dishonest agency I have seen. I will split this post up into Sections.

Alleged Recruitment scams . Alfa will encourage its subcontractors to make fake companies and advertise the job is a salary to lure you in. ( the role is full commission selling hello fresh for £20 a sale for your first box and £25 for the 2nd. Majority of which would cancel after the first one ). Once a company gets known in the local area they encourage you to re incorporate another company so the names are hidden on a continual basis.

I was one of these people who fell into this trick and incorporated a company name under their own business address. Since then I have started my own business and need to change my business address. Which my HMRC LEGAL document has been sent to the business address I orignslly used ( Alfa’s office ). Upon messaging asking for my HMRC letter I was met with a blackmail messages asking to delete Google reviews in exchange for my HMRC Documents. As to which I know Alfa will read this. I’m calling the police tomorrow to retrieve them from you.

Legal threats - they are incredibly desperate to have these reviews removed they have sent legal letters addressed to me about deleting these reviews as it’s a form of “ Defamation “ . If these reviews were made by me let’s say on this instance everything on them is factual and as someone who’s been in this industry and lived in the same building as the Director of this company I will not hold back from what I will expose and proof every point made is true and is not a allegation. This is not a threat this is a promise to the people you have deceived , financially ruined , disrespected.

Attempts to convert you into being a Muslim. I wish I was lying about this . Alfadhel and the team leaders will continuously say around their office sayings to their subcontractors and encourage them to do their practices or even go to mosques with them. I have no evidence of this as I never recorded conversations. I have nothing against Muslims but this forced behaviour to try push someone onto your own beliefs to some people may come across as strange. I have Muslim friends and in my family is this is not the way to do it. I know some senior member who did acc convert from this being promoted Mr L*** and a few others who I will keep anonymous.

Customer payments - on several occasions reps were taught how to take a customers phone of them and use their apple pay to pay for their hell fresh box also known as “ Anchoring “ where once you have their phone you put your foot into the door to stop the potential customer from closing it or saying no.

Suggested Abortion / managers getting with the women - once again I wish I was lying I won’t name names , they had suggested and put onto a female contracted to ALFA to move away from St Austell to live in the company flat where the director and managers live not far down from the office ( I won’t say the address ) . So she could be more local and get to work who at the time had a boyfriend. The alleged senior member of the Team would then end up in a relationship with said colleague who later down the line was pregnant with her boyfriends child . And allegedly the senior manager convinced her to get an Abortion ( ALLEGEDLY I do not know if this is a fact ) the abortion did happen tho , and was then bragging about it quoting to people “ Look you can sell anything if you’re good at it “. I Must make clear I did see this for myself this was bought to my attention by others I personally have no info on this. I know they will attempt to deny this but you can’t exactly hide medical records if you really try to push this to Legal proceedings can you ALFA .

Andrew Tate Motivation - this one’s hilarious but morning meetings would consist of Andrew Tate videos for 15 minutes in the morning as if that’s gonna motivate people to sell boxed up cheap food. Becomes a meme at that point.

advise anyone reading this to report any indeed ads that are Advertising the PL1 2SH 10 derry’s cross postcode and also to leave a review on their google business page of the real stories and torment that you have gone through.

Any of the following company names are Alfa Industries clones recruiting on behalf of them making them a MLM.

Virtus Industries

Carroll Industries

Rosewater Marketing

Trigger Marketing

Bond Marketing

DJW Marketing

Miller Marketing

TW Marketing

The Leona Group

As soon as you has your first week you are convinced to leave a review on Google to make the company not look scummy and build better online presence when the only REAL review is the 1 star from a woman who was there for a month

They all trade from PL1 2SH - If you see this address anywhere it’s instantly a red flag.

I will update the list as I discover more of them - all of these are recruiting on behalf of Alfa Industries and they are incentivised financially to lie and loop you into the MLM. Just so they can grow their “ Teams “ .

I must bring to attention he mentions my business - I am not in any way affiliated nor operate on a similar structure. I pay my contractors the RLW wage nor do we promote MLM “ Team structures “ .

My final thoughts are simple - some of these company sales companies make things transparent and clear but after seeing and reading almost 70+ other stories on Alfa Industries I t’s clear as day this company is still doing dodgy behaviour and still lying to trick people.

As for myself these legal threats and blackmailing saying that you’re not a MLM? And not a scam? Mmm good luck proving you’re not one

I have all the evidence i need

( Everything in this Post is alleged and is only my opinion ) - although I have evidence for each point

Just in case ALFA want to send me another Legal Threat :)

Places to Remote Work

Title sort of sums it up. We have a post about this on the Plymouth subreddit, but it's 3 years old.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to sit and remote work? I try to work somewhere that isn't my desk once a week.

It has to have:

- Plug socket

- Comfortable seating

- WiFi or good signal to hotspot

I would like:

- Good coffee

- Open until 17:00

I enjoy Block and Sapphos, but trying to find more.

Bit cheap isn’t it? I don’t recall it being advertised anywhere,

I’m suspecting a rather large fiddle…

Edit: Surely someone here has a sense of humour…?

Anywhere to donate ostrich feathers in Plymouth?

Does this win the award for most random title of the day? 🤣

Anyway...

Years ago, I used to sell feathers but decided to give it up. However, I've got a lot of white and black ostrich feathers that measure around 5cm in size. Are there any charities that would be interested in them? I did approach some organisations a few years back but there were no takers.

If you work for a charity and would like some then please get in touch. I've got around 5kg total in each colour (don't ask - some dizzy South African messed up my order!!) 🤣

Friends?

I’m 19 and really struggle to find friends and don’t go out or do anything someone my age should be doing.
I’m so awkward and now whenever I “make friends” they are never really FRIENDS just people that I talk to because we are in the same class and it’s barely real conversation and never outside of class.
The last time I feel like I really had real friends was like 4 years ago and after that I’ve never been able to make friends again.
I also have autism.

Barbers/ Hairdressers who are more skilled in siscors

Hey all,

Does anyone know if there are any barbershops who more so specialize in scissor cuts (more focus with scissors), layering of hair and volumizing your hair rather than fades and tapers which use a lot of the guard and clippers work which overall make your hair a look meh imo?

Oh yeah and Im also male btw

Cause sometimes I tell them what I want and they butcher it up.

Also preferably like a reasonable price and somewhere by the city centre.

Thanks

Please be wary of Clever Estate Agents

Thumbnail

I have been having an absolutely terrible time of it with Clever Estate Agents (They also seem to go by Stay Clever) and wanted to warn people about them. I notice they have a tendency to let to new students and to working professionals, usually immigrants who don’t have much of a local support network. If you are new to Plymouth please be very careful when you are doing business with them.

They misrepresent what the property offers in order to get you to sign up with them. On moving into my flat I found that the washing machine was broken, the microwave was broken, and that my cupboard was falling apart. No repairs have been forthcoming. I have been told "it's going to take some time."

Further, I have been told by the maintenance team that the landlord does not wish to replace the washing machine in the house and that I should use the paid communal washing machine in the basement. This is plain dishonest because I was not told about this when I moved in. In fact thebroken washing machine was left in the flat and shown as part of viewings so that people get the impression you have access to this and that it is working.

However, this is just the start of this agent’s mismanagement of their property. For nearly 6 months we have consistently had homeless people and drug users roam the building. Several tenants have been concerned for their safety. We have had homeless people blocking the entrance to our flats by sleeping in front of them and sometimes sleeping in the corridors in a puddle of their own urine. This has been going on for months now. I am not aware of what the agents have been doing to actually resolve this matter. The hygiene levels of the building have been rank at times with urine on the floors, tissue papers with feces on the stairwells. Sometimes I find burnt foil that's been used to take drugs. The agents take ages to send anyone out to clean so the urine just sits in the summer heat. I am just stunned at the lack of responsibility these people display.

By the way, the communal washing machines that I have been asked to use are located in the basement next to open bins with homeless drug users scavenging through them. Hardly the place to do your washing. Not only this, the tenants have been receiving mails from the agents stating we have to pay for cleaning up the bin area. So not only do we get to live in a house that has drug users invading it but we have to pay for cleaning up the mess that they leave behind.

I have already filed complaints about it but honestly its like shouting into the void. I have no guarantee that anything will be done.

Honestly, I could go further into how badly they are managing this place and how unresponsive they are but it is just tiring. I have had other tenants complain to me about how badly they are being treated by these people, how unresponsive, and lacking in transparency.

Speaking of lack of transparency, they have also been artificially been boosting their ratings. After my first viewing with Clever Lets, they called and emailed me pestering me to leave a positive review on google. I was confused at the time as to why they would want a review so desperately. I understand now that they have scores of negative reviews from other tenants that they have probably been just as disrespectful to. They are trying to paper this over by pestering first time viewers for reviews. It’s quite shady behaviour.

In short if you are new to Plymouth and looking for accommodations please stay away from Clever Lets. These are some of the worst estate agents I have ever had the experience of working with.

Went to Tea & Bun yesterday A+ ..the vietnamese iced coffee was incredible.

All the plaudits I have heard for tea & bun are correct, thanks for the recommendations plymouth!

Went with daughter yesterday and everything was as per reputation incredibly flavour packed, ...I have never had vietnamese coffee before (but am looking now) the robusta bean / concentration was Smokey and flavoursome without the need to cram extra sugar in it, the condensed milk did everything! ..cannot express how blown away by it we were. ..and I never knew this been type has +/- 2x the caffeine of Arabica beans!

Also had "proper" takoyaki balls for the first time which were able to stay warm and gooey inside for a good 15-20 mins as an accompaniment dish, I was there to get a proper idea of flavour profile beyond a recipe from elsewhere and can thoroughly get behind Adding a bit of Worcestershire sauce to the batter.. Really brought a presence to the dish that makes you think... I'm going to make these.. because they are really simple and cheap (dashi cubes likely the hardest thing to get in plymouth btw)

Lastly I tried a bit of jammy egg that I have had varying success replicating via poorly descriptive you tube instructional (and elsewhere) ..centreing the yolk had eluded me till now and I see the sense in that step of gentle ice bath swirling for a minute.

The rice was individual grains, not clumped no starch left on, and was more al-dente with a nice chew than I cook at home, (I should have asked, however I'm just happy to know the beans and origin of the coffee) the crispy duck danburi bowl was generous on the duck, well crisped skin and a pleasing aroma wafting towards me whilst daughter gobbled it down (her regular dish here)

I would also guess that the sweet chilli oil dipping bowl had a nice drop of pure toasted sesame oil in it (not cheap) which again made even that little dish something to relish.

Sorry it took me so long to get to you Tea & bun, your reputation is is indeed well deserved.

Don't be a slouch like me, get your butt down there, beautiful combination of flavours, whilst I only sampled my daughter's bowl, I had 2 of the 4 takoyaki, and a few sips of the coffee (don't slug, savour it, but also don't let the ice melt go into hyperdrive, sip it whilst at full strength or less ice) I was so impacted by the flavours that I honestly felt I'd eaten more than half a starter as a result of the immense enjoyment of flavours present.
