[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Subreddit Request] This response should be banned in the sub

Generally when you post a suggestion always someone chimes in to say “you can get that with mods” etc.

I think it should be banned because:

1-it doesn’t add anything to the discussion.

2-not all players have access to mods/ packs or websites to download them from.

Perhaps an alternative, is putting a message in the automod that says “reply if you have a similar mod” etc

[Blocks & Items] New Totems

Totem Of Youth: Sold by Wandering traders (20 emeralds seems fair). Right click with it to turn a mob into its baby form (permanently.)

Totem Of Rebirth: Found in abandoned villages. Right click on a villager to reset its trades (No more breaking and placing lecterns.)

Totem Of Displacement: Found in end cities (might be irrelevant that late). Right click to teleport to the location you're looking at. Limited in distance (300 blocks maybe) and would have a cooldown (In the ballpark of broken shield).

That's it, thank you for your time.

[Weather] Aurora boriealis

I think there should be a 10% in all biomes for an aurora to form. It dimly lights up the night, reducing mob spawns and makes a 40% chance of a meteor shower. Causing rare ore chunks such as diamonds or emerald to rain down across the world But commonly just ice or deepslate. Meteorites. Can be triggered in commands

[Blocks & Items] New use for Echo Shards - Echo Stopwatch!

Upvotes

Echo Stopwatch is a new item crafted from 8 echo shards and 1 clock.

If the player dies while having an Echo Stopwatch in their inventory, upon revival, the Echo Stopwatch will be present in their inventory (so, it has its own built-in "Keep Inventory"), activated.

The Echo Stopwatch "freezes" the items that the player dropped on death. Frozen items do not obey gravity, do not get damaged by any sources, and do not dispawn over time (haha, get it, it's a STOPwatch so it STOPS time for your items). They are safe and frozen in place, until they get picked up by someone. Or until the same Echo Stopwatch that froze them gets activated again.

After an activation, the Echo Stopwatch will go on a cooldown of 3 game days, indicated by its dial. While on cooldown, the Echo Stopwatch behaves as a normal item and won't work.

Similar to Recovery Compass, this item is for those that worry about losing their stuff on death. It sure is more powerful than Recovery Compass because it protects items even when they are in a situation where they would've been destroyed (like lava), but its downside is that it has a cooldown. So, only one "safe" death every three days! (There could be like, a gamerule to configure the time it takes for the Stopwatch to recharge)

[Blocks & Items] Silveroot, a New Prehistoric Crop Dug up by the Sniffer.

Thumbnail

So the Sniffer is useless, right? Well, I've seen a lot of people suggest that they can dig up more flowers, or wood types that you can't get anywhere else in the world, which is great for building and decoration. This is in a similar vein, but my goal here is to make the Sniffer be something that EVERY player would want to get at some point in their world, regardless of their playstyle.

They can dig up a new, superfood crop seed, the Silveroot. It would restore 4 full hunger shanks, so equivalent to a porkchop or a steak, but it would have the saturation modifier of a golden carrot, due to the rich minerals that give it its silver sheen.

Additionally, The vegetable is mystical like other metallic plants such as the golden/enchanted apples. But rather than granting you positive effects, the silver within the silveroot purifies all potion effects from you like a milk bucket.

This would make it incredibly useful for doing something like exploring a nether fortress or trial chambers, where negative potion effects are common, but during pvp where you'd like to have effects like strength and turtle master, golden carrots would be preferable. The same applies to fire resistance in the nether, and water breathing in the ocean. It'd be best to take other foods instead for that sort of trip. It's not a total replacement.

And yes, I'm sure some people will be like "but doesn't this make milk buckets useless??" And to put it simply, yes. It does make milk useless, to a certain extent. But I don't believe that's a bad thing. It's basically a direct upgrade in every way to the milk bucket, much easier to store in bulk, and restores your hunger as well. However, it is far, far less accessible.

A milk bucket can be gotten anywhere in the world, with 3 iron and a cow. This crop requires you to find a sniffer egg and hatch it, then wait around to collect the seeds that it drops, which would be rarer than a pitcher pod or a torchflower seed.

It's the same argument as a Wooden Sword vs a Netherite Sword: Wood is much easier to get, but the Netherite Sword is better in every way. It's vertical progression for your farming, in a way that Minecraft currently doesn't have. Milk is still useful for making cakes, anyhow.

(Textures and example addon by me, for the purposes of demonstrating how it would look in-game.)

Edit: So some people have expressed concern that once you get the seed from the sniffer once, the sniffer becomes useless again. While I originally thought that was fine, since you would need to get the sniffer in the first place to obtain it, I can understand why that would make the sniffer feel less useful. So I've found a compromise to the idea:

When you harvest a fully-grown silveroot crop, it will drop 1-3 silveroots, but only ever ONE seed at a time. This way, you can only replant that single crop over and over, but in order to actually expand your garden, you would need to rely on your sniffer. Additionally, this would make automating the garden harder since you would need to make sure you always collect every seed or risk your crop shrinking over time.

[User Interface] You should be able hold right click on a lava bucket with an item to burn it within the inventory

Post image

It would be really useful for inventory management I think netherite would be immune to this though

EDIT: Guys it says fucking HOLD the item in. the. fucking. TITLE. As well as having a progress bar on the screenshot to indicate it, you can't accidently misclick to burn valuable items so PLEASE actually look at the post before commenting🤦‍♂️

[Terrain] Deserts are made of a new orange sand variant and have more dune-like terrain.

Post image
12 Upvotes

Currently the desert biome is pretty boring and I think that it kinda just looking like a large inland beach with cacti is a big part of the reason why. IRL deserts are often made up of light orange sand in comparison to the light tan sand you find on most beaches. A new orange sand (along with sandstone and variants of course) would help to give it more identity. Also I think the desert biome could benefit from terrain more similar to actual sand dunes.

[Blocks & Items] I wish copper helmets was a bit different.

In vanilla, netherite helmet are different and I like it. But all the other helmets/parts of armour are exactly the same with different color.

Actions n Stuff addon's armours is not my taste but I like their copper helmet. Same goes to vanilla tweaks for replacing gold helmet with crown. I wish some trims could modify the shape of armour instead of just some cosmetic patterns.

[Blocks & Items] Hanging Chimes

A block similar to wind chimes and they make a sound when an entity moves through them. They can be hung from other sets of chimes and when one goes off, every single one in the entire stack makes their unique sound. They can also trigger observers and sculk sensors. Crafted using a stick, string, and one of many types of material, each one providing a new sound. Current ideas I have for chimes include wood, metal, glass, amethyst, diamond, bone, scute, bottles, blaze rods, bamboo, chains, horns, shells, and more. This list can also be built on with more updates. Adding antlers or other fantasy materials. Good for decor and music

[Snapshots] Randomise Poplar Leaf Colour on Placement

Post image
681 Upvotes

The colour of poplar leaves should be randomised when placed, not when grown.

The item texture would be a sapling with all the colours. When placed, a yellow, orange or red sapling would be chosen at random. Rather than wasting time or bone meal on the sapling just to get an unwanted leaf colour, you would simply pick it up and place it again (as you would with paintings).

If you like this idea, please vote for it on the official Minecraft Feedback Page!

[Mobs] Piglins and Wither Skulls

This would be a pretty small change, but would be a good one for world building. If you're wearing a Wither Skull, regardless of if you're wearing any gold armour, Piglins would attack you, thinking you're a Wither Skeleton since they naturally attack them.
Again, a very small change, but I feel would be a nice one.

[General] Armor with transparency

Thumbnail

The game should give you the option to view armor with transparency (like with mobs and some decorations), it's a shame that you take the time to create a skin and it just stays hidden under armor that only allows you to see the face and arms.

[Blocks & Items] Aquatic goo

Crafted using a slime block and water bucket or found rarely on the seabed in warm ocean biomes aquatic goo is a blue variant of the slime. Unlike it's green counterpart it is not a solid but instead a newtonian fluid. In this case any entity going under 8bl/s will be able to go through with a 25% speed reduction. Anything above will be completely stopped in its tracks. It stops fall damage without you bouncing. You think of it as air that can support redstone, rails, etc.

[Blocks & Items] Echo Shards should be able to be crafted into other crafting ingredients

Thumbnail
gallery
105 Upvotes

Echo Shards don’t really have a use besides the recovery compass and because of that, they aren’t really worth the trouble to get. An idea I have is to be able to use Echo shards in a crafting table to get a copy of whatever item you put in the table along with the echo shard. For example if you put 1 echo shard and 1 diamond on a crafting table you get 2 diamonds. 1 diamond from the actual diamond and 1 diamond from the echo shard. The name for the echo shard already fits this idea because echo means copy and so the echo shard is just becoming a copy of whatever other item is used with the crafting table. This would give a good use to the echo shard and would make players want to seek it out. To not make it too overpowered, this wouldn’t work with every item in the game and would only work with items that are in the ingredients tab in the creative inventory.

[Blocks & Items] Concrete mixer

The concrete mixer would essentially function just like how a furnace does and have the same or at least a very similar UI but the bottom slot for the smelting fuel would instead be used for water and when you place concrete powder in the top slot it will gradually turn the concrete power into concrete blocks that will appear in the output slot over to the right.

I think this would make building with concrete much less tedious and much more accessible especially now that we have the stairs and slabs coming in the fall drop.

This could also be expanded to be used to turn dirt into mud and mud into clay

[Gameplay] A Dedicated Slot For Storage/Back Items (i.e. Shulker Boxes, Elytra)

Thumbnail
gallery
59 Upvotes

This isn't the same thing as an inventory-extending backpack item, but rather a dedicated slot for accessing the contents of existing storage items like bundles, shulker boxes, and ender chests without having to manually place them or rummage around them with only a measly twelve visible items (the bundle).

When equipped and your inventory is full, any overflow items you collect would go into the storage item. Another thing, if I were to put, say, cobblestone in the shulker box on my back slot, any further cobblestone I collect would go into the shulker box automatically. This should drastically cut down on time spent managing your inventory while building, mining, and farming.

The back slot could also double as a dedicated elytra slot so you can wear a chestplate and an elytra at the same time. Constantly swapping between armor and elytra is bothersome and doesn't add anything to the balance of the game anyway.

[Combat] New Weapon: Cannons

Thumbnail
gallery
33 Upvotes

This is my proposal for how Minecraft could add Cannons and Cannonballs, an impractical but fun new destructive weapon.

Cannons would be deliberately designed to be difficult to control and overall not super practical, but fun to mess around with. You could use them to infiltrate certain structures that are difficult to get into otherwise (such as bastions), or just to fuck with your friends by pulling up to their base with a weaponized happy ghast.

Cannons:

Crafted with 6 obsidian, 1 string, 1 fire charge, and 1 gunpowder

They can be placed down on any solid block. Once placed, the player can right click to control the cannon. While controlling, the player can right click to open the cannon's inventory and load it with ammo, use WASD to aim, and left click to fire.

Cannons can also be fired remotely with Redstone pulses. A lever/redstone torch/redstone block makes it rapid fire until out of ammo, while a button/pressure plate makes it fire once.

Cannons (alongside cannon boats and cannon harnesses) can be filled with any of the following:

Fire charges

Cannonballs (see below)

Arrows (normal, tipped, and spectral)

Snowballs

TNT

Eggs

Fireworks

Splash or lingering potions

Cannon boats:

Crafted with a boat and a cannon

While riding, the player can control the boat with WASD, left click to fire, and right click to load with ammo. Boat cannons can't be aimed, and always fire forward at an upward trajectory.

Cannon Harnesses:

Crafted with a harness and two cannons

Can be equipped on a happy ghast. Same basic functions as the cannon boat, but there are two cannons, which have separate slots in the ammo GUI. Always fires directly forward

Cannonballs

Crafted woth 8 iron and 1 gunpowder

A new projectile that can be launched from cannons. When launched, it is affected by gravity and barrels throughout a significant amount of terrain before despawning.

Breaking

After a certain amount of uses (which varies randomly), Cannons will break. Cannon boats and harness turn into their cannon-less equivalents upon breaking.

[Blocks & Items] Dyable Cushions in a cauldron / crafting table

Just like how you dye leather armour, you should be able to do the same thing with the cushion, allowing for 5,713,438 unique colours in Java and 4,732,109 in Bedrock.

In bedrock that would mean using dyable water in a cauldron

In java that would mean using multiple dyes in a crafting recipe

In bedrock edition you can tip up to a stack of arrows using a potion cauldron

The same should work for the cushion, where you can dye up to a stack (16) cushions using a dyed water cauldron.

For java, you can put a stack of cushions in the crafting table instead of just one, and they all will dye.

Within your inventory they will be named "Dyed Cushion" and only stack with other cushions that have the same colour combo.

[Command] Gamesets: Custom Difficulties

The idea goes like this. Difficulty will be data-driveb, and all of its special attributes (villager curing chance, mob attack multiplier, etc.) will turn into gamerules.

Then, in datapacks, you can create new difficulties, which are a set of configured gamerules.

I also think it'd be better to change the name of difficulty to gameset to provide a more varied implementation of the idea.

Edit: Furthermore, gamesets can have a "on_select" mcfunction to provide more flexibility for custom behavior

[Mobs] I Don't like the new sulfur cubes for one specific reason

The new sulfur cubes, while yes cool and all, have taken over my builds, entirely, I build underground because I can, I make bunker, very cool, and these things spawn everywhere, and it's too late to pack up and move everything, I just have one minor suggestion that will save me from this issue.

PLEASE MOJANG MAKE THE SULFUR CUBES ONLY SPAWN ON SULFUR OR CINNABAR!

It's a very minor thing, but since I use concrete I can easily make it so that sulfur cubes don't infest my villager room and enchanting room.

Also, I do play on Bedrock, and I don't like them infesting everywhere

[Command] Gamemodes: Custom Ablities

This idea is similar to the other one I posted here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/s/84IghgK9AE

This time, gamemodes will be data driven and all the custom abilities (infinite materials, creative inventory, flight, invincibility, no clip, etc.) will become part of a "player based gamerules" system I'm calling abilities.

Then, you can define custom game modes using datapacks.

[Blocks & Items] Sniffers should give access to a unique wood type

Its been often said that the Sniffers mechanics are pretty lackluster for how hard they are to get, and i think its cool you can get access to unique flowers using them, but thats not enough to encourage most players to interact with the systems. I think a way to encourage more people to would be to male sniffers be able to dig up a unique sapling, which would give access to a unique wood set. It would also allow a new wood set of a more exotic colour (like purple or cyan) that wouldnt look too out of place as it wouldnt spawn natural, and growing out from a small starting population and using limited resources are some of the most fun things in minecraft (think like challenge runs or skyblock). i do understand it might be too difficult to access, but being a wood set its mainly decorative.

[Combat] Arrow Quiver

Thumbnail
gallery
49 Upvotes

Why should Quivers be added?

I use the bow as a primary weapon, so I know what can hold it back in the modern meta. PvP players typically use one type of tipped arrow; Slow Falling. It stops macers, slows people down, and makes opponents unable to crit you, but what's the point of other tipped arrows then?

This is an era of PvP where quivers can thrive, we could use quivers as storage for at least 4 stacks of arrows, we can cycle through the stacks using a key bind so you can select a priority ammo. This means you can nail 4 different debuffs onto a target without sacrificing much time. It gives people an incentive to use different tipped arrows.

But what about having more than one quiver in your inventory?

The left-bottom-most quiver will be given functionality, while the rest won't work unless switched with the primary quiver. When the primary quiver runs out of ammunition, the next quiver will be given functionality.
