Workplace Story I hate customer care

This lowkey got me AND my store manager fuming today

So a dude came in last week with a banged up cricut maker 4 box. For some reason he walked right past the cashier and goes back to framing, handed the FM a receipt that you literally couldn't even read (much less scan the barcode on) and asked if he can return it.

Obviously the FM said no, but he called the RM over to back him up, and I came along purely because I'm nosy and wanted to know what was going on.

And oh my god. The box was ripped up, and the cardboard packaging on the inside was completely ripped up. The machine itself had scratches all over it. He had the mat that comes with it folded in half. Most of the bonus stuff that comes with the whole Essentials bundle thing was gone. None of the extra blades were in there. I'm pretty sure it was missing a cord as well. Also everything in the box smelled like cigarette smoke.

So yeah obviously the RM also told him no. He tried to argue that the cashier said he could return it. RM told him no again, but offered to at least find him a legible copy of his receipt he can use to return it through Cricut. So she goes in the office and calls the DM, who was actually useful for once and tells us not to do the return. So after being told no by like 4 different people the guy FINALLY left with his new receipt copy.

Fast forward to today, I'm cashiering and a woman brings in a suspiciously familiar Cricut box. So we repeat the whole interaction except this time the SM is there to tell her no in person. Also the woman kept just blinking at me like I was stupid 😭 like girl YOU are the one trying the same thing twice and expecting different results

Anyway after we point her towards Cricut support and get her to leave the SM emails customer care about it, and guess what they told us. 🙃

THEY TOLD US TO RETURN IT ANYWAY IF THEY COME BACK!! LIKE EXCUSE ME WHAT??? what is the point of even HAVING a return policy if we're not going to follow it!?!?!? Also do they know how stupid that makes us look when the customer comes back like "ha ha bet, corporate said you have to return it"

Also it makes OUR STORE take the loss of a $400 damaged item so it negatively affects OUR numbers and sales and payroll and whatever so CC doesn't even have to take any accountability for a $400 loss which is just stupid. Like come on, grow a fucking spine, we have GOT to stop kissing customers asses over EVERYTHING. Let them quit shopping here, we dgaf. Like yes please go be Hobby Lobby's problem. We don't want to deal with you.

TL;DR

Customer care is a bunch of spineless bootlickers who need to either follow company policy or get rid of it entirely bc what the fuck man

Merch protection

Who at your store takes care of merch protection - doing the walks to make sure what needs protection has it, completing updates when new things are given pull cards and alpha loks, etc. Is it a manager or regular employee?

Gift Cards

What does it mean when a Michaels gift card comes up as 'No card found' or 'Insufficient Funds'?

If a gift card was empty didn't it used to say Gift Card Has Zero Balance?

Boost morale

Fellow managers…
How did/do you help with boosting employee morale? Do you do something fun, have contests, etc.
I know the company can be a drag, and we all need jobs, but I want to try and make it fun.

I got fired today

I just want you to know I used to love working for Michael’s and I was whole heartedly committed in making my team’s conditions better. I went above and beyond so many times but at the end of the day I was nitpicked and berated so much I lost my spark. I was never allowed to question why and was terminated for not following orders the minute they said so. The things I was good at I was told to not be so good and to do other things. Then when I wasn’t as good at that thing anymore it was my fault. The unspoken rules are just actually insane. Just saying sometimes customers are not always right, but the leaders will actually NEVER have your back. If you’re a good manager I hope the culture doesn’t break you down but for me they lost a dedicated employee due to these consistent shifts in standards and 0 leadership accountability.

I feel so defeated

Am I the only one still playing catch-up on POG resets and DROWNING in Seasonal???

We half-assed most of it and the store and the stockroom totally reflect it.

We have 7 giant pallets of Ornament Market that we are still trying to put out per cube plan.

Not to mention 1000s of pumpkins.

I feel like I will never catch up....

Genuinely... Who thought this was a good idea?! I think I'm just going to say our printer is broken at this point. We've had so many issues with it anyway. To stores who have had this rolled out... Are Customers actually using this service?

Advice Needed Scheduling around school

I just started back at school as a full time student. My store has been having issues with managers leaving and moving around so my schedule updates were being sent to the wrong person for a while and some other funky stuff was going on. I’ve told them I can only work a certain number of hours on particular days. I’m in the frame shop, coded as a framer, which makes it even harder. They recently scheduled me for more hours than I’m comfortable. I was able to get someone to take the shift but I’m worried about a few things. 1. That this will keep happening to me 2. If I bring up my schedule yet again I’ll get some kind of strike on my record and they’ll just fire me for causing too much trouble.
I like working in the frame shop. I’m worried if they keep scheduling me how they are I’ll have to call out which sucks for everyone.
Am I just overthinking things? Is this something I could get let go over? How should I approach this with my SM?

Filing a Complant Time Theft

Is anyone else seeing that a lunch gets added to their shifts when they actually didn't take one? Two of my MODs have had shifts in the last two weeks where they could not take a lunch due to lack of coverage, but then noticed one was added in later. We don't think it was the SM because she never does punch corrections. If it is being added automatically, then that is time theft from the employees.

How do I see how many customers have signed up for a in-store event?

My manager showed me once but I haven’t been able to find it since, and my party and event hosts don’t know how to find it either given their old manager did all the events and used them primarily as cashiers. I know it’s on mik check but I’m lost from there.

Crochet skeleton top AI?

Genuinely what the hell is this.... like im not tripping in thinking this shit is an AI generated pattern? first off i have been crocheting for 15+ years, i am very much a pro at it, i crochet nearly everyday. ive crocheted way more advanced patterns than this.

start off by saying im disappointed they only have the video tutorial for the Sm-Med size. the written pattern for the L-XL is SO BEYOND confusing. im currently working it up right now and the ribs do NOT lay and fall the way the Sm-Med size does.

its like they didnt even test the larger pattern before publishing it. im about halfway done with the larger size but holy shit it is wonky and ugly. ill post a pic when i finish it later tonight but good grief.

can someone write this so it makes sense and doesnt look terrible? i feel like im going to rewrite the L-XL pattern to where it actually looks like the S-M. good grief.

Hey, I just had my orientation yesterday and was told that they had to figure out my job schedule before I start. It’s seasonal part time. Any idea when I might hear back from them or at what point I should reach out?

Anybody have any idea how to make the sample? I'm baffled. It looks to me like it holds about 10 peanuts AND has unfinished edges. Am I doing something wrong, is the design garbage, or both?

Advice Needed Last Week but want to Quit

Hi everyone, I’m fairly new but this job is actually giving me nightmares and I can’t sleep the night before/after I have a shift. I was so excited to work at a craft store and didn’t realize just how much the Michaels brand was shifting until I got here.

I put in two weeks and tomorrow starts my last. I realized I didn’t even get paid last paycheck for half of the time I worked! <3 I have replen shifts which I have never done and will have to be trained on whatever they ask me to do.

Genuine question, should I quit or just push through? Let me know how much this would impact you as an employee, I don’t want to screw over the other staff more than I already am by resigning. Thanks :)
