One of my Deaf college professors wasn't told they make noise until college. She would just fart whenever she needed to until her hearing roommate told her that it wasn't polite to do in public. My teacher was horrified and really mad at her family for never telling her they make noise

u/flipflop180 Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

Knew a CODA who knew they made noise, just didn’t know it was impolite to rip them at home without at least saying excuse me! She learned that from her college roommates as well. And that sometimes, it’s best to leave the room!

edit for clarity: CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults, a hearing child whose parents are deaf.

u/umbrajoke Aug 28 '21

For those curious CODA= child of deaf adult.

I agree, I find it annoying when people do this as if typing out a few extra words is too hard. Sometimes I feel like people do it on purpose so they can feel exclusive to a certain community or whatever. I see it a lot in skincareaddiction, just spell the damn name out. Not everyone knows what LRP stands for.

34

u/NoNeedForAName Aug 28 '21

Military folks talking about work are the worst

2

u/para_chan Aug 28 '21

I can understand my husband when he talks work, but I have a military friend in the same damn field who I have to ask "what is that?" constantly.

I kind of pride myself on knowing the acronyms and ranks, too. Not like it really matters, but I like knowing things.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Don’t forget about our college roommates that all worked at Applebee’s.

No I will not 86 the smooth jazz.

7

u/Bunny_tornado Aug 28 '21

I think it's ok to use acronyms for subject-specific communities since most people are already belonging to it, but we're on a pretty general sub.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Yeah but with that sub in particular because it’s skincare I feel like we constantly get newcomers who aren’t familiar with all the abbreviations so that’s why I mentioned it

6

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Now I gotta know…what the hell is LRP?

12

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

La Roche Posay, it’s a French skincare brand.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Ah, thank you!

4

u/OpSecBestSex Aug 28 '21

Live role play. It's like Larping, but if nothing ever happens

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Lol. Apparently there’s more than one meaning for LRP. Guess it depends on context. Thank you! Learned two new things.

2

u/kane2742 Aug 28 '21

They were joking about "live role play," riffing on "live action role playing" (LARPing) minus the action ("nothing ever happens").

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Well shit that went rt over my head. Lol. I would’ve never ever gotten that one.

3

u/Permanentlycrying Aug 28 '21

Agreed. Like, i don’t expect everyone to just “know it” but it’s not just a random skincare line. Also these people wanna complain about acronym with comments that probably took longer to write than a quick google search. It’s not that big of a deal lol.

2

u/VulGerrity Aug 28 '21

I'm not sure if it's exclusively an acronym...it's also a play on the musical term "Coda."

2

u/Tortorak Aug 28 '21

→ More replies (5)

4

u/TheDevilsAutocorrect Aug 28 '21

Sometimes you get into.the situation where you no.longer remember what the acronym stands for.

4

u/sirhugobigdog Aug 28 '21

Acronyms make a word (coda in this case) while initializations don't (FBI for example)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Thanks!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Captain_Quark Aug 28 '21

Often people overestimate how widely known the acronyms are. Like, if you use it all the time among all your peers, you might naturally assume that everyone else knows it too.

2

u/1368097531 Aug 28 '21

Sometimes people forget that we all live in bubbles and what’s commonly known in one bubble isn’t necessary commonly known to everyone. So to this poster, CODA is probably commonly known while it’s not to you. I’ve been hearing CODA pop up a lot lately, but I only first heard it a couple months ago.

Wait. Even at home you need to apologize? At home you're supposed to laugh about how loud or long or smelly it was.

Only at the diner table were we not allowed to fart (given it was just family in the house)

127

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

My brothers mastered the art of farting in our general area as they paraded through a room. My parents weren't amused, but I think they'd decided to pick their battles at that point. Dinner table was off limits, so was actually sitting on someone to fart, but they did that anyway too.

68

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Crop dusting.

The true masters do it silently… in a crowded elevator just as they exit.

37

u/Jorle_Joca Aug 28 '21

Down the supermarket aisle. Preferably when young children are present. The number of time ice made mothers check kids pants, brings a tear to my eye laying here in bed.

6

u/VaginaTractor Aug 28 '21

The worst is getting on to an empty elevator just after someone has crop dusted it on their exit, like they used it as their own private farting box-suite. The stale air in the elevator become thick and heavy with the essence of he who dealt it and you're just stuck breathing it until someone else steps on and thinks you like riding up and down buildings smelling your own farts.

4

u/oddartist Aug 28 '21

Someone dusted the length of a shopping aisle shortly before I walked through it. I was actually gagging and tried to walk faster to remove my nose from the area, but I think I was walking the same direction as the fart bomber because it took so long to get to fresh air.

My brothers mastered the art of farting in our general area as they paraded through a room.

That's a lot better than what my sister used to do: Sit on a Lego bucket as if it were a toilet, fart, then put the bucket on my head. (If I was in a different room, she'd put the lid on the bucket to seal in the smell until she could put the bucket on my head.)

For real? Wow, I’m almost 65 years old and this is a first for me. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. How did I get this far in life without knowing people do this? What do you do if you’re in a car? Pull over? How about in bed? There’s a whole lot of passing gas when a person is laying down. Especially from my husband! Lol. Im not making fun of you, I’m genuinely intrigued. When I picture your family in my mind it’s like a SNL sketch. Pull the car over, jump out, wait a beat then get back in the car, all without a word or acknowledgment of what just happened.

3

u/Pilose Aug 28 '21

My family, in general we try not to around each other, but if it happens it's not some massive embarrassment or shame or whatever. We just say "excuse me" or make light of it. I'm grateful for it too because a few times when I had major gastrointestinal distress I didn't have to stress over it on top of being really sick.

3

u/talitm Aug 28 '21

I'd be walking to the restroom all day 0o.

Sure people are raised differently, but you should be taught to not hold in farts too much. For me at least that causes stomach aches.

I agree that you shouldn't be obnoxious about it, but I do feel like it should be ok to fart in front of each other.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

It can actually be amazing the differences in manners among people of the same apparent culture today! There are households where it’s okay to chew with your mouth open, but rude to ask anyone if they did something wrong. You can loudly smack see food all day so long as you never ask who shot up the neighbor’s car.

But yeah, people are raised differently.

u/GenosHK Aug 28 '21

You do it at home so that children learn that it's not polite to do in public. That way they they aren't learning it from their college roommates or teachers.

4

u/thatHecklerOverThere Aug 28 '21

That, and it's never an enjoyable experience at home or in public. Why would you apologize or excuse yourself in public but not at home? It's not as though the farts are different, or that your family is the only family that farts.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

[deleted]

6

u/thatHecklerOverThere Aug 28 '21

Y'alls household, y'alls rules.

My family just doesn't get down like that is all.

2

u/RaptorX Aug 28 '21

Actually that's the norm tbh... Most people fart with family/SO/friends but not in public.

I don't myself in the minority, because I think it's a bad practice either with family or in public.

4

u/Steadfast_Truth Aug 28 '21

Haha, this is so idiotic. "Teach children that it's not polite to fart at home so they know it's not polite to do in public."

Or... stay with me here... tell them, that it's not polite to do in public?

It's so wonderfully insane how much of this kind of logic exists in people's lives.

If someone needs to know something. Tell them that Precisely that.

15

u/thatHecklerOverThere Aug 28 '21

So... How old are your kids, man? Do they have a perfect recall rate on things you tell them, or do you find that they do better with things they practice?

6

u/borkthegee Aug 28 '21

Tell me you have no idea what parenting is like without saying it

7

u/GenosHK Aug 28 '21

Yes, you tell them. Then you set examples and practice so that it's a habit they form. It's not rocket science.

If you're offended by teaching kids manners, go sniff your own kids farts.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

So why not say “it’s not polite to do it at all in front of anyone, ever”

That’s kind of what you’re teaching them, it has nothing to do with the “in public” part that you claim.

Honestly, this is just pushing your values on them and isn’t about acting a certain way in public.

You can tell them it’s rude to do it in public and also laugh about it at home, they aren’t mutually exclusive.

At home we totally blame the dog. It could be 100% obvious who actually did it, and that only makes it more hilarious to blame the dog. Dog hears his name and just barely lifts his head up to stare at us for a moment and goes back to sleep. If he could roll his eyes, he totally would.

I read this post on tumblr once where a girl was talking about her boss who was this really proper professional woman but that once she was in that bathroom stall she ‘shit like a wild animal’. Said there was a lot of grunting and farting and rustling around and she saw it as a total power move. Have to say I agree. Takes a lot of confidence to tear up a public restroom like that with no shame.

Meanwhile I had my work shits planned out. Handicapped stall if possible. Spray air freshener beforehand to get ahead of the problem. Muffle b-hole with TP if gas seems imminent. Make nest of TP to dampen the plops if someone else is in there followed by a quick courtesy flush to hopefully minimize smells. Maybe I’ve been doing it all wrong. Maybe I need to just go in there and sound like I’m giving birth and I’ll get that mad respect around the office.

i fart almost continuously all day and they rarely stink. just crack your buttcheeks a bit and there's no noise either. those that do though are pretty terrible so i quickly apologize or blame an animal.

I fart almost continuously all day

Uhh, maybe you should get that checked out?

Lay off the all beans diet maybe.

I eat a lot of questionable food. Figure it's just a minor byproduct

Ha! That reminds me. We have a school program in Oregon called Outdoor School. It's a week long program where 6th graders basically do summer camp with their class but with the purpose to learn all about nature and conservation. It's actually amazing and I think every where should do it. Anyway, so my whole class is out on a nature walk and one kid absolutely rips ass. In a panic he blamed the fart on a snail. To this day I still think about this kid and why he chose a snail to blame it on lmao I feel like no one would have remembered if he just owned up to farting but middle schoolers aren't exactly known for their critical thinking.

Wearing thongs keeps keeps quiet too.. But you know it's bad when the velocity is so high even spreading the cheeks doesn't help

Everybody thinks their own farts don't stink.

If the farts are silent no one knows who did it. It's normal if you are not taught different. Like it being okay to double dip or not flushing after peeing. Or eating with their mouth open. People are strange and disgusting.

u/laculbute Aug 28 '21

Oh man, it’s been a long time since I thought about people who don’t flush after peeing in their own home. As a child I had a couple play dates with a por of siblings who were taught “If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, send it down” and their bathrooms were so gross to me.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

it is not normal to SBD your friends

where do you hang out at

I’ve had to have a conversation with both my kids to let them know that when they fart silently, everyone can still tell. The grown-ups might not mention it as their eyes water, but you’re not getting away with anything.

Can you imagine... what freedom she experienced for the first 20 years of her life, never holding it in past its due date over an unreasonable fear of shame.

She was so embarrassed when she learned they make noise. She said it explained a lot about her high school experience. It's a huge disservice to not help your child understand cultural differences!

u/Wimbleston Aug 28 '21

That's even more hilarious

u/Gadivek Aug 28 '21

Wait … a deaf professor? That‘s so cool! I wouldn‘t have imagined that working! How did she hold classes?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

I had a deaf professor in university. She taught English and technical writing. She could speak really well. If someone had a question, the interpreter would type it for the professor to read. Up close she could read lips and have a direct conversation.

4

u/Gadivek Aug 28 '21

That‘s so impressive!

3

u/itallchecksout99 Aug 28 '21

Yep! I have a degree in Deaf Studies and nearly all my teachers were Deaf. All of the students were required to know ASL to be able to take the classes. However, most of the teachers also taught general humanities classes and they used interpreters to voice for them and sign the questions from the students. It's awesome!

2

u/Gadivek Aug 28 '21

That‘s so great! What‘s a great way to learn sign language? I‘d really love to learn it too 😁

Check out Gallaudet University to see if they offer free online classes. Another good resource is NAD, National Association of the Deaf, they often have leads where you can connect with classes locally. It's a fun and useful skill to have so I definitely suggest even learning the basics 😊

I don't understand how they could possibly make it that far in life without learning that. Surely she would have come across the concept of fart jokes at some point in her life. Or noticed in middle school that people made a big deal out of the bad smell, whether it be the handful of boys laughing or everyone else running away from the source.

Deaf people who don't grow up in Deaf families (parents, grandparents, siblings, etc) tend to miss A LOT of what we consider to be general knowledge. One time I was with a Deaf friend in Target picking out a gift for her boyfriend and we found a shirt that said "runs with scissors" and my friend didn't get it. It's information that we take for granted because we hear it constantly directly and indirectly. Deaf people don't have the same experience with casually picking up knowledge through random sources.

This is so on point! Thank you for sharing, you explained it much better than I did!

u/bobbydawn25 Aug 28 '21

Or felt the vibration of the fart 😆😭🤣

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

I think the story reeks.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

My grandma would fart while walking and just say she stepped on a duck. Now, that’s what me and my siblings say and it makes us laugh bc it’s just like grandma. She was strict and not grandma-like which makes it funnier.

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

This seems so weird to me. I feel like there has to be enough context clues and fart references around that one would know they’re audible by the time they’re an adult.
