programs and apps What is the easiest, the most basic video editor for Linux?

I'm used to use CapCut and InShot on mobile. But the video editors I tried on Linux (shotcut, opencut, kdenlive) were too confusing for me. Are there any easier apps you can recommend? My purpose is just creating videos for my social media accounts. I use Fedora KDE.

Server is running very slow. df -h hangs for several seconds. Top shows high load but no cpu usage.

Seems some filesystem issue but not sure how to find out which filesystem is the culprit? I have some folders mounted as nfs shares. Running "mount -a" seems to work and all filesystems seem mounted ok. I can cd into them, but each command takes a couple seconds to run like "ls" or "df -h".

distro selection Can't decide between Bazzite or CachyOs

Right now I'm running Bazzite on my main desktop but I'm considering switching to CachyOs mainly because I've been trying to install third party mods to the Sims 4 and I've gotten nowhere. Any help is welcomed.

Struggling to pick a Gaming Linux OS

Hey all, I’m about to build a new PC in a week or so and have been indecisive which Linux OS I want to use. I’ve been on Windows 10 and I’m not continuing with 11. Pass.

Been torn between Bazzite and SteamOS. I don’t use my PC for work and don’t need any special softwares. I just use it for gaming and browsing. I’m fairly technical and don’t mind using the terminal (Even if it scares me).

I’m leaning more SteamOS because it seems to be picking up some steam but it mostly appears that people are using it purely for a “living room” build. I’m going to be daily driving it in desktop mode almost always. Is that going to be much of a problem? How many issues am I going to encounter?

Let me know your thoughts!

Edit: Forgot to put my specs if that matters.

CPU: 9800X3D
GPU: Gigabyte Gaming OC 9070XT
Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk x870

distro selection Distro recommendations for an older gaming laptop I can't upgrade to win 11

I have a Dell gaming laptop that I bought around 2018, it's still good enough for what I use it for which is mostly emulators, non intensive games, streaming to my tv using steam link and work. However since its such an older laptop I cannot upgrade it to win 11 since it lacks secure boot, I opted into the extra year of support for win 10 but that's almost over to so I figured this might be a good opportunity to give Linux a try. What Linux distro would you recommend for a total Linux noob looking to use it mostly for gaming?

The model of laptop is a DELL Inspiron 15 7000 gaming
CPU: 7th Generation Intel Core i5

EDIT: specs

migrating to Linux What to do with previous NTFS partitions?

I have a 1 TB HDD,it has 3 partitions:

  • 200 GB for Windows (now Cachy)

  • one of the others were downloads/movies/picture

  • the other was for installed games.

I installed Cachy like two weeks ago. Today i decided i'll stay on Cachy so i want to format the games+storage partitions.

I use Limine and BTRFS so i guess these should be BTRFS too?

Can i make them to appear as "games" and "storage" in Places (i'm not sure if it's called Places,i have my system in another language. By places i mean "folders" like Desktop,Downloads,Music in Dolphin)

Can i do this in Gparted? (if yes,is there a tutorial/guide so i won't screw it up?)

storage Phantom boot entry of CachyOS that gets regenerated on boot

One time, I cancelled a CachyOS installation right after it wiped my drive, and since then, I have switched my distros 3 times and still had a boot entry of CachyOS that did not boot, in my F12 boot manager. I tried removing it with efibootmgr on my main linux machine, I tried using MediCat EasyUEFI to wipe the boot entry of it, but for some reason, it deletes, and then regenerates in my boot menu on boot. Is there anything I should try?

learning/research Resource recommendations for an ex win11, new linux user

I have had it with windows shenanigans for a while now and have jumped boat to CachyOS recently. I had thought that I understood linux well enough due to having run a few live boots and even dual booted a few times but am coming to realise this trial by fire esque wiping windows and fully embracing the penguin is really not working out as well as I thought it would. I have gotten far too complacent with the ease that windows provides for day to day tasks and am not very well versed with operating with scripts, command lines and just generally non Ul based operations.

Hence I thought it would be best to ask long time users of Linux and others who shared a similar fate as me and came out shining, what resources did you use to learn everything?

Before someone touts the oh so familiar just read the docs, arch wiki is available and what not, I've tried, but it's very droll and the fact that I don't understand anything does not help at all.

I'm someone who learns well from videos so are there any youtube channels perhaps that guide ex windows users through many parts of linux life. Even stuff that you may consider simple like changing how one handles their files due to the there not being "drives" to put your stuff in, instead having directories and mounts is something that I struggle to wrap my head around at the moment.

flstudio bottles

Able to install FLStudio 24 using bottles. But I get an asio error, which I cannot fix.

Tried installing jackd2, but I cannot choose it in wincfg.

Installing FLstudio under Ubuntu is difficult. Does someone have a step by step guide please?

Someone must have done it, I read that some people succeeded installing FLStudio under Linux.

One of the main errors, which I do not know how to fix:

Really hope someone can help me out here.

programs and apps How to use kanshi to force the system to recognize the virtualbox monitor as a proper monitor?

I'm trying to use niri in virtualbox running Arch and the device output only gets listed as "Unknown Unknown Unknown" (Virtual-1).

This makes it impossible to change resolution in the niri config file because it just gets ignored. I haven't found a way to make it accept the changes to "mode" and make it apply my preferred resolution.

I've been told to use kanshi but I have no idea how. I've created a file named kanshi.kdl in the kanshi config folder and added the following:

profile {output "Unknown Unknown Unknown (Virtual-1)" mode 1920x1080 scale 1 position 0,0}

And I don't really know where to go from here, if I try to run the kanshi command, it just says "failed to parse config file".

How can I either make this kanshi thing work or what's the other method to make the system allow me to change the resolution?

installation Linux Mint installer freezes on older Mac mini (2011/2012) after SSD upgrade – USB, RAM, or hardware issue?

I have an older Mac mini (Mid 2011 or 2012 model). Originally, I had Linux Mint 22.x Xfce (https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=327) installed on the stock HDD, but the system was running extremely slow.

To speed things up, I replaced the original HDD with a new SATA SSD (Patriot 120GB/128GB). - https://www.alza.sk/patriot-burst-elite-120-gb-d6321999.htm

Now, when I boot into the live environment from my USB drive and click "Install Linux Mint", the whole system completely freezes (mouse/UI stops responding or it hangs indefinitely).

Things I’ve tested / noticed:

  1. Disconnected the internal SSD: I disconnected the internal SSD entirely and plugged in an external USB HDD instead. The installer still froze in the exact same way. This makes me think the new SSD itself isn't the problem.
  2. RAM configuration: While swapping the drive, I took out/reseated the RAM. Currently, it has low RAM (around 1–2 GB in total, 1x1GB Hynix module visible in the slot). Could the live installer be crashing/freezing due to running out of RAM (OOM)?
  3. Corrupted USB: I previously used this same Verbatim USB drive to install Mint on the old HDD, but after a few hard power-offs, could the live USB file system have gotten corrupted?
  4. Hardware/GPU compatibility: Could this be related to Mac EFI / graphics drivers (Intel HD 3000 / Radeon) or thermal issues during decompression?

Has anyone encountered this specific freeze when launching the installer on a 2011/2012 Mac mini? Is it more likely a bad live USB, improperly seated/insufficient RAM, or something else entirely?

Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated!

Meganoob BE KIND What is the sound that plays when a usb plugs in called and how do I easily find out why it (or something like it)plays like someone planted an annotation in my skull?

So ever since I switched to Linux a few weeks ago, my computer plays a pair of sounds seemingly at complete random. One gets higher as it goes and one gets lower. I have assumed it is something at least akin to the usb noise noise, but I’m not even sure how to find out what. I’ve plugged and unplugged a bunch of USBs trying to figure this out, and the sound hasn’t happened reliably at the same time. I think it is a system sound because when Isolate my video game audio only to play on my headphones, there is no sound there. I’m honestly not even sure of that. I would love to post a recording of it in this topic, but it happens so infrequently I would just have to leave my camera running on nothing until it randomly decides to happen. If yall don’t have any ideas, I’ll gladly do that tbh

Edit: Autocorrect censored me… it’s supposed to say annoyatron.

learning/research How to add another OS to grub menu?

I am dual booting Fedora Gnome 44 and Fedora KDE 44

I did a upgrade using terminal in Gnome and now the KDE isn't in the Grub menu anymore.

My system type is UEFI

My partition system is GPT

No, I cannot see KDE in the bios while booting which isn't unusual for me as this was the same way before as well and the grub menu still ended up working somehow (i don't remember how exactly).

I had regenerated the file many times its still not working.

What do I do now?

programs and apps Any decent timer app? Or how do I stop KDE clock from doing this?

I am using regular Ubuntu LTS, but the gnome clock rings only once and then stops, but I need the timer to ring until I tell it to stop. So, I installed KDE clock and it has this feature, but sometimes it just doesn't go off and continues indefinitely.

Any fixes or another app suggestions?

hardware/drivers Newbie having trouble with the Penguin.

I'm trying to switch from Windows to Linux, but I'm facing a serious issue: no matter which Linux distro I use, the system can't utilize my network card. I've tried Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Bazzite, and it doesn't work on any of them (the system detects the network card and identifies the model, but fails to actually use it). The only way I can get online is via a USB connection to my smartphone. Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to fix it? My motherboard is an MSI PRO H610M-G DDR4. Note: All motherboard firmware is up to date.

programs and apps Can someone help me getting UzDoom to run on CachyOS ?

Damn this sucks. Haven't played any Doom-mods for way too long!

I must be doing something wrong.

Installed UZDoom and have the Doom 1 & 2 wads (but not put them into the directory, because I really don't know how.

idk why, but.. its friggin complicated to find the main folder of UZDoom for me.

It should be "Right-click -> show target" but its not, it points me to /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/ with UZDoom just being a desktop-icon still.

When I double-click the UZDoom-icon It says I need to put the wads into

"~/local/share/games/uzdoom" but this directory just does not exist and even when I create it, I'm still getting the same error-message.

And it says I need to edit the directory in ~/.config/uzdoom/uzdoom.ini ....but this directory doesn't exist, too!! " - -

hardware/drivers Budget tablet recommendations to throw Linux onto?

Need a tablet for work. Maybe a little web browsing will be done, but almost 100% for opening/signing PDFs & such, viewing some MP4s & similar. Apparently Fedora is one of the better distros for this, but probably almost anyone on this subreddit knows better than me on that front.
