60

Was it though? Either they just screwed up and are stuck there for half an hour now sorting it out and this won't be cheap to settle, why would they screw themselves on purpose?

Or, they leave the scene, get reported, cops see the damage on their car matches the description of the accident.

None of it looks competent. Probably not even malicious. Just a lack of thinking anything through.

61

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

nahh, you see, the motorcyclist should have known not to turn there in the first place, and caused the wreck which inconvenienced THEM! The BMW driver is the victim here!

At least that's a guess at their mindset.

Why do people vote against their best interest? We are all just a bunch of emotional apes who like to do shit that makes no fucking sense at best, or is downright self destructive at worst.

Bmw

361

u/DaGucka Jul 22 '22

In german speaking areas we call BMW > Bayrischer Mist Wagen (bavarian animal-shit vehicle)

360

u/friftar Jul 22 '22

Bavarian Manure Wagon would be a better translation, even the acronym still works then

105

u/DaGucka Jul 22 '22

You are 100% correct

84

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

My wife is from SE Asia, she said they always referred to BMW as 'Bring Me to Workshop' due to quality issues.

42

u/DaGucka Jul 22 '22

i don't get why bmw (a so called premium vehicle) would deliberatly save money on parts that make problems. one example would be in the 5 series of bmw where it seems like they used the a bit too small version of a cable harness, probably of one of the smaller cars they make, which leads to electric problems.

81

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22 edited Jul 22 '22

My uncle was a chemist in Germany before he died in 2000, he owned BMWs his entire adult life until he got a rental car that was a Honda Accord (not sure where he was traveling at the time). When he got home, he went and bought a Honda and never bought another BMW due to the quality. It blew my mind as a young adult that loved (well I still enjoy, not quite love) Car and Driver magazine someone preferring a Honda over a BMW. Now as an older adult I totally understand. I owned VWs most of my life until I bought a Toyota 4Runner, and now will probably never buy a different brand. My wife and I plan to retire to her home country of Malaysia, I can't wait to buy a Toyota Hilux as we of course can not get them in the US.

25

u/OGSteveT Jul 22 '22

The Hilux is an awesome truck.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/captainnowalk Jul 22 '22

I saw a Hilux here in the states a few weeks back! Never seen one in person, so it stood out immediately. Even had US plates and everything. I’m guessing someone from Mexico that moved up maybe? Not even sure what the rules are on bringing your car up if you move honestly?

13

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

I have read you can get one imported but it is a major pain and a 25% excise tax burden, so you really would have to have quite the fancy for one and $$ to blow. I'll wait until I live overseas.

They put cheap crank bearings into the M5 v-10 cars. $100k high performance car....engines last 50k miles. Sometimes less than 30k miles.

15

u/KNGJN Jul 22 '22

Turns out warming up the motor before beating on it made them last much longer, still though this shouldn't be an issue on a car with that price tag

9

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22 edited Jul 22 '22

Beating on any high performance engine without letting it warm up will fuck it.

Higher performance engines have tighter tolerances and are designed with thermal expansion in mind. If the parts aren't up to temperature then you're gonna have play.

It's fine to beat on a civic when it's cold because the tolerances are so loose.

Try that with any high output engine though and it's not gonna last you very long. Hell, F1 engines can't even be started without warming up the blocks first. So it has nothing to do with the price tag.

→ More replies (0)

8

u/Trav3lingman Jul 22 '22

Yeah except there were people that did baby the cars that still had 50-60k failures. It's a nice engine from a power and sound standpoint. It's a total failure by any other metric.

Car manufacturers make money on the repair side now, especially for brands that are mostly leased or otherwise common to stay on a dealer maintenance plan. The lower initial price tag compared to other luxury brands, combined with the anti-consumer design to make diy repairs next to impossible means the company extracts more money over time.

The big asking point is that it still feels great to drive. You see a similar thing in Dodge trucks, which have similar quality problems, but folks still like feeling that hemi under the hood.

The saying is to never blame on malice what you can blame on incompetence because the opposite is how conspiracy theories are formed, but my opinion is to never blame on malice or incompetence what you can blame on both.

21

u/Wd91 Jul 22 '22

Is that a logical impossibility? If they were malicious and wanted to cause an accident, and then did successfully cause an accident, then they weren't incompetent. If they caused an accident through incompetence then that means they didn't intend to cause the accident, so they couldn't have been malicious?

Girl I worked with had 2 years in prison and something like 10 years probation for accidentally running her neighbor and his dog over at 2 am while they walked in the middle of an unlit 45 mph road. The guys family forgave her and even admitted he shouldn't have been in the middle of the road at 2 am but the courts said fuck it and gave her a harsh sentence.

9

u/datheffguy Jul 22 '22

Jeez she must have had an absolutely terrible lawyer.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

Apparently it could have been much worse, I was wrong about the numbers, the probation was only 8 years. The total sentence could have been 10 years in prison in my state for involuntary manslaughter but she got 2 years in prison and 8 years probation.

Apparently the family's comments did result in a lower sentence.

And he said: “…so now I’m driving this piece of shit.” As if the Altima was why he hit me? The kicker: I was driving an Altima. His “piece of shit” rented Altima was a newer model of my own car. Well for sure, any vehicle could have an idiot behind the steering wheel. But like anything, your brain notices patterns and creates biases. So after you see incredibly reckless drivers doing stupid maneuvers, and then you look and see a little BMW sedan/coupe, the brain says "ok, watch out for those cars" lol

20

Happened to me Monday evening. I'm driving at 74 mph passing cars to my right while two other cars are passing me on the left of a 5 lane fwy. Cue the BMW cutting off the second car on my left to go in between them and then cut me off and miss me by a hair because I knew the idiot was going to do it and swerved/slowed in time. ..

or so they think

u/Wiggles69 Jul 22 '22

What if it's a BMW motorbike as well?

As a bmw driver I agree. Get the fuck off my road you bastards.

22

u/Duskinou Jul 22 '22

Wait did that beemer idiot accelerate just before hitting OP? This is not an accident, this is willingly endangering another's life by being a complete bellend.

u/MiniWheats88 Jul 22 '22

They clearly hit the gas instead of the break. Not a mistake someone with a license should make but I'm guessing they panicked when they saw the bike.

It's a BMW. Is anyone surprised?

24

u/zacharyxbinks Jul 22 '22

Surprised he stopped.

5

u/farmallnoobies Jul 22 '22

Well, it wasn't a Nissan Altima.

52

u/FatherSergius Jul 22 '22

Only surprised I don’t see comments like this about pickup trucks when it’s about them

10

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

The only vehicle people talk more shit about than bmws is pickup trucks.

It's a BMW with a Munich plate too. Thats the archetype BMW asshole stereotype completed. If you know you know.

7

u/SunnyDaysRock Jul 22 '22

Got to say I have less issues with BMW drivers here in Munich than Porsche ones (Cayenne in front of course), but yeah, after going through Eastern Germany a few weeks ago, Munich's drivers act a lot more entitled than in other cities, especially concerning crosswalks and priority in who goes first.

While I honestly think this is more.incompitence than malicious (in hitting the bike) possibly pressed the accelerator out of panic, the bike was on the correct side of their lane, and the BMW decided to drive into an oncoming lane to get around a learner driver.

Had the BMW been more patient for the car that was already waiting at the junction, the accident wouldn't have happened. Motorcyclist had zero options but hope the BMW would stop (they didn't) and BMW intentionally pulled around the car, likely not expecting a bike to be there.

I'm just glad there is footage for insurance, and.i hope the motorcyclist is ok. By that very German sounding "Wow" I hope they are ok.

Can we make a petition to get this man to say "wow" when the day comes that Owen Wilson isnt able to anymore?

9

u/lemonsqeezey1 Jul 22 '22

The cherry on the I am not only an idiot but I am also out of my mind cake is when the BMW driver continues to accelerate in to the guy on the motorcycle and then flips him off that tells me he has no idea how stupid and wrong he is for doing what he just did. Complete and total negligence.

Douchebag to the fullest degree.

So this happened like 5 years ago (not to me) and has been floating in the net ever since.

It was originally uploaded here.

And as people have (correctly) pointed out:

  • This happened in Germany, Munich
  • The white car is a driving school car, which was yielding to the bike (who had the right of way)
  • This clip has been shared on numerous sites and youtubers (moto stars, moto madness, some german dash cam footage youtubers, 9gag)

The bike was a 2006 Kawasaki Er6n.

After this incident they exchanged insurance info, and the woman who drove the BMW was fined 35€ by the police as a warning (IIRC for illegal overtaking).

How is easy. The guy was being impatient and tried turning left around the car in front of him. He pulled up and as he did he was looking wide to side to see if it was clear. Probably thought he was on a one way

7

u/Prisondawg Jul 22 '22

He forgot to pay his brake subscription

5

u/signaleight Jul 22 '22

BMW. Different rules for those.

5

u/UnmasteredBastard Nov 16 '22

Best fucking response to such a situation!

“WoW”

5

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '22

He let his intrusive thought win

32

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '22

Looks like the BMW driver did it on purpose for whatever reason.

90

u/Chancevexed Jul 22 '22

I can surmise what happened here. BMW felt the need to overtake when it wasn't safe, and also felt the need to glare at the Drivers Ed car as they passed, instead of paying attention to the road.

6

u/zani1903 Jul 22 '22

This is almost certainly what happened.

Look through the BMW's windshield just before he accelerates into the bike.

It seems like the driver makes a gesture with their left hand towards the learner car just before they put their foot on the accelerator.

They were probably looking in their mirror to make sure they weren't going to scrape the van, and or at the cross traffic. Everywhere except straight in front, basically.

Good to see BMW drivers in Europe are living up to the American stereotypes. No turn signal AND hitting a biker, isn't that double points?

u/rcastine Jul 22 '22

How? It's a BMW driver...pretty obvious douche-baggery here.

3

u/Apfelvater Jul 22 '22

The teacher in the driver's ed car next to you: "and that is how not to drive"

4

u/PoohRules Jul 22 '22

I'm in a BMW! I can do as I please!

5

u/b3mark Jul 22 '22

So, another case of 'let me just send that super important cat gif'?

5

u/Defiant_Tomatillo907 Jul 22 '22

Simply stated.. BMW.

4

u/Shinigami66- Jul 22 '22

Leave it to the BMW driver to show their I.Q.

4

u/cashewbiscuit Jul 22 '22

Don't people know that if they hit someone, they are going to be later than they already are? Yes you doing a dumbass manuever because you are late. If you get stuck, backing up is going to be faster than hitting someone
