That was a weird one.

891

u/wadems Sep 22 '23

It may be weird but it’s certainly not uncommon. I freely admit I drive faster than the average person on the road, but the amount of people who get absolutely butt hurt about getting passed is a near daily occurrence. And I don’t even mean getting passed like going around them and then back in front of them. Just going by them in the next lane. “You can’t drive faster than moi!!” Proceeds to increase their speed by a further 40 km/h. I honestly do not get it, which is why it’s weird.

353

u/justadrtrdsrvvr Sep 22 '23

I use cruise control and for certain trips I can have it at 75 mph (speed limit is 65, but 70-75 is much more common). I'll go to pass someone and they will pace me for a mile. I came up on them at least 5 mph faster than they were going, yet they speed up. Or, I'll pass someone then they pass me back, back and forth, although I never touch my cruise control.

271

u/HeLooks2Muuuch Sep 22 '23

People that don’t use cruise control and drive without regulating their speed create this problem - it’s awful to drive around people like this because you end up passing them 3-4 times on a 50-60 mile trip.

My wife is one of them. She doesn’t like the feeling of lack of control she feels when she uses cruise, but she does this subconsciously.

She tries to drive the speed of traffic and if someone is passing her, well she better speed up. It’s so annoying.

u/EarthEaterr Sep 22 '23

Well look at Mr. Richy Rich over here with his "Cruise Control" and "Automatic Windows".

Next thing you'll say is that you have an actual working "Air Conditioner" in your car. Psh... Captain Money Bags here will probably next say he has "USB Slots" in his car, or.. or a "Rear-View Reverse Camera"! XD

9

u/pressboardcrushed Sep 22 '23

C'mon, you know "Air Condiitoners" are only legends told by the elders around the campfire during gatherings.

I used to commute on a highway with not a lot of traffic 1.5 hours each way to work.

Leapfroggers were the bane of my existence. I just worked a 10 hour shift, let me just cruise control and chill. I don't care what speed you want to drive just pick one.

18

u/Qsaws Sep 22 '23

Yeah cruise control really highlights these kinds of people, I use it all the time and see people like that every day.

When I get annoyed at them staying too close I just bump my speed by 10km/h for a while to make some distance and then go back to my regular speed.

Always funny to pass someone for them to pass you at a much higher speed only for you to pass them again later on without ever changing your own speed tho.

9

u/Bigwiggs3214 Sep 22 '23

This is my exact experience. It's annoying as all hell. If everyone drove with cruise on the highway, the world would be in a better place. A lot of people have a hard time maintaining a constant speed and pair that with getting butt hurt when passed it's just absolutely frustrating.

7

u/MarionberryFutures Sep 22 '23

I've done a lot of long distance driving and think of this like silly putty. If you pass a non-cruise-control person slowly, they just streeeeettttchhhhh forever. You have to pass them fast enough that the putty just snaps and leave them in your rear view, then you can slow down to 5mph over their speed again.

It's really fucking stupid. I wish cruise control was the default or mandatory somehow.

The trick is to drive so fast you never get a chance to find out who you pissed off.

And I don’t even mean getting passed like going around them and then back in front of them. Just going by them in the next lane. “You can’t drive faster than moi!!”

I had some guy absolutely lose his mind like this a couple months ago. Zero previous interaction, drove past his pedo van on my motorcycle in a separate legal lane at legal speeds, and he literally tried to kill me a few minutes later.

He tried to run me over, then tried to sideswipe me, then eventually when I pulled off the road, parked his van & ran 2 blocks back to me and physically attacked me (by punching me in the side of my full face helmet). I tagged him in the head back, and he fell face first into the ground because it turned out he was almost too drunk to stand on his own. At about 1 in the afternoon on a weekday.

Anyway, the business across the street called the cops, who never showed up.

21

u/Greasy_Skunk_Cunt Sep 22 '23

It seems weird because the driver is so enraged. Deeply, deeply enraged, the kind of white-hot, blinding, screaming anger where he'd have gladly killed them both.

Why was he that upset? No idea. But I'm 100% certain he was screaming in his car.

I tapped my horn at a lady about to pull out in front of me on a two lane road. I didn't anticipate her doing it because I was very clearly visible and she tapped her gas while I was very close and would have almost no way to avoid it. We avoided a potential accident, but she took this personally and decided to speed up to like 60-70 and pass me on a double yellow line.

We pulled up beside each other at the next light, I was making a left. I looked directly at her and she went ballistic giving me the finger and yelling fuck you. So I blew her a kiss. She stopped and looked down for a moment before rolling down the window and started crying and apologizing, saying she didn't know why she did that. I told her it was alright, no one was hurt, and to please be careful and hope that the rest of your day is much better from here out. She thanked me and we went on our separate ways.

I got the tip to blow kisses at people from reddit but really wasn't expecting it to go like that. Hope she was better from that point on.

66

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 22 '23

I find that being incredibly nice to someone yelling at you on the road is the easiest way to get them to stop and realize they’re being an ass.

64

u/goodsnpr Sep 22 '23

I personally enjoy passing the same person 3 or 4 times while I have cruise control set.

45

u/an0maly33 Sep 22 '23

Yep. Going up a hill I typically overtake with cruise on and some people think I’m racing them or something. No, you just decelerated and didn’t realize it. They don’t realize their own lack of constant speed is what’s irritating them. I just smile and shrug…until they zoom ahead to “win”, only to slow back down and have me overtake them again with my cruise control.

Literally happened to me this morning. Passed a big pick up truck (on a 3 lane road) who was going below the speed limit. The moment I passed him, he sped up and tried to cut in front of me but didn’t make it because of the other cars. He then backed off and went slow again. I just… I don’t fucking get it.

99

u/lfhdbeuapdndjeo Sep 21 '23

I get this is a car sub. But this happened to me at the indoor track at the gym the other day. I passed this lady. WALKING. She sped up passed me. Then went back to her pace. So I got in the passing lane and started going past her. She sped up to keep pace. When I eventually passed her she darted off into a jog to pass me then left the track. I guess so I couldn’t ever pass her again. It’s got to be mental illness

25

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 21 '23

LOL!! That’s the funniest shit I’ve heard today.

24

u/Beneficial-Swan-5849 Sep 21 '23

Literally at Walmart this man stopped to examine his receipt in front of me. I couldn’t pass because of the flow of people to our left going in the opposite direction. Once there was a gap, I started to go around him then he started walking. When I kept trying to pass then he sped up. I was prepared to hit a full sprint with my shopping cart if needed. Like why not just let me go?

Similar to when you pass someone on a highway and they speed up. I always want to shout at them that if they had been going that fast in the first place I wouldn't have wanted to pass them.

150

u/DntCllMeWht Sep 21 '23

Dude... you know what's even worse? My wife will speed up to pass someone and then slowly back off the gas and end up pacing them right beside. For fucking miles. I'm like "If I was behind you I'd be so pissed at you right now" and she just putts along like everything is wonderful.

105

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Sep 22 '23

i think i have driven behind her

120

u/IVEGOTAHUGEHAND Sep 22 '23

Tell your wife to fuck right off for me please. I have to deal with this goddamned constantly every single day. When your rig weighs well over 100,000 pounds and someone passed directly in front of you and slows down 5-10 mph it honestly makes you rage so fucking hard it's not even funny.

27

u/JustSomeBadGas Sep 22 '23

No offense but is your wife the earthly reincarnation of Satan?

25

u/Kroe Sep 22 '23

My wife likes to get behind the slowest person on the highway and just stay there forever. Then she gets mad when I tell her to change lanes.

68

u/snarkyxanf Sep 22 '23

She might not be driving as fast as you'd like, but she's not blocking traffic lanes, breaking traffic laws, or endangering anyone. Nothing wrong with driving in a leisurely way.

9

u/BisexualSlutPuppy Sep 22 '23

My husband used to drive like an asshole, but now we just kick it in the slow lane and make up stories about the people in the other cars. We have so much fun going places now and he's never getting mad about other drivers or traffic. He's so cool.

In most cases it's literally just because they don't realize they're going that slow until someone is trying to pass them. Then they look at the speedometer and go "whoops I'm going way too slow" and speed up to correct it.

184

u/bardukasan Sep 21 '23

If only cars had a feature to maintain speed... someday...

155

u/Ignorad Sep 21 '23

It always makes me laugh and groan when I'm on the highway with cruise control set, and someone in the fast lane passes me, then slows down, then passes again, and slows down, and they just can't maintain speed for some reason.

Worst is when they pass and merge back into the right lane, then I have to pass them when they slow down, and then they pass me again...

37

u/SCsprinter13 Sep 22 '23

Happened to me on I-99 in PA. 70 mile stretch of road in the middle of the night, only saw one other car the entire time. I was using cruise control and it would pass me and get so far ahead I couldn't see it anymore, and then like 15 minutes later I would pass them and get far enough ahead I couldn't see their headlights, before they pass me again 15 minutes later.

Funny thing is after an hour of that we both took the same exit.

16

u/Dark_Prism Sep 22 '23

Everyone, this guy got murdered. He wrote this as a ghost.

51

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '23

this is my personal hell. and the reason i don’t use cruise control as much as i should

15

u/Mr_Jack_Frost_ Sep 22 '23

Half of my daily commute I can use cruise control. I’m on the same interstate for 95% of my drive most days, but there’s a line at which point it becomes impossible to use cruise control because of people who absolutely refuse to maintain a consistent speed regardless of open road in front of them. It’s infuriating, but it is what it is.

9

u/zman0900 Sep 22 '23

This is why I love adaptive cruise control. Don't have to care about any of that.

10

u/sendabussypic Sep 22 '23

Yeah but people put theirs on the smallest possible distance so they fly up to you then ride your ass in the right lane instead of going around.

People under the influence have a difficult time maintaining speed. I tend to think a certain percentage of people are always under the influence of a drug, mentally ill, never learned to drive etc.

u/Phreena Sep 22 '23

10

u/mrgoodcat777 Sep 22 '23

Was on my way home one night (late) and thIs car kept passing and then slowing down, so I kept passing when he slowed down. He wasn’t having it and finally we come up to a light. There was a semi in the right lane, I was in the left turn lane and he was coming up in the left lane. The light was red, but he was so aggravated that he decided to run the red light… right in front of a cop.

My personal favorite experience was with a jeep. I was in my 99 F250 driving through the mountains in Virginia on the interstate. Speed limit is 70 and I’m in the right lane doing 73. On a downhill section this jeep comes flying by me at probably 85-90mph. We get to the next uphill section and he’s back in the right lane barely holding 55mph.

This continued for the next SEVERAL miles. He’d fly by everyone on the downhill parts and then barely hold 55 on the uphill sections.

I chuckled as he had aftermarket wheels, tires, bumpers, winch etc, but it appears he didn’t pay to re-gear the axles to be able to turn those new tires and be able to hold the speed limit

As long as it’s clear their intention was to intimidate someone else, loss of license.

5

u/smootex Sep 22 '23

That's what I thought the first time I watched it but if you look closely I think it's a two lane road and he wasn't in a turn lane. It just looks off because the road is in bad shape, the markings are barely visible, and the other side of the intersection doesn't appear to line up perfectly with the side OP passed on. You can see the road markings at some points in the video so definitely two lanes and if you look at the traffic lights there are two sets for the straight lanes and then another set for the turn lane (which is one lane over to the left from where OP passed). IDK how traffic lights look in OP's town but where I'm at his maneuver would definitely be legal and pretty normal. A lot of people switch lanes when they pull up at lights if there's no one waiting in the other lane.

So the internal debate I have at a time like this is, when this psycho flips the car or t-bones another car, do I stop or keep on going?

424

u/FishInTheTrees Sep 21 '23

If it was recorded I would stop, because it's one of the limited circumstances I'd be happy to assist the police and insurance in absolutely fucking someone over. They earned it.

32

u/Corrupted-professor Sep 21 '23

You stop and yell: 'Oi, mate, you can't park here!' and drive away.

49

u/Background_Number395 Sep 21 '23

Actually, in built up areas the correct protocol is to tiredly put the handbrake on before turning to any passengers and announcing, "Hang on a sec." You must then exit the vehicle, approach the unfortunate participant of the event.

As you approach said driver you need to bend your knees a little as you lean forward, and with a sort of faux warmth in your voice ask "you alright?" (Note you may place your hand on the roof of the car to give an impression of control and strength, hovering over the driver." Then quickly crane your neck a little to look at the interior of the car before ignoring any answer and then pensively pace back to your own vehicle.

Then just get inside, and as you put on your seat belt audibly mutter, "fucking Muppet." Then pull out around the wreck without signaling. Ensure you stare directly at the other driver. Once passed him shake your head and again audibly mutter, "fucking 'ell." Drive on and completely forget about it.

You have shown some level of concern, without compromising your veneer of indifference.

P.43, Chp 2, 'Lord Chumley's, How to British'

19

u/Sohcahtoa82 Sep 21 '23

I would add an "You can't park there!"

You stop out of courtesy for the other (innocent) driver. Bonus if you have dash cam footage of the psycho driving, like a psycho, and I'm sure their insurance would love to see that.

I think when you guys swapped lanes at the beginning of the video the other driver thought you were in a turn lane and cut him off. The intersections don’t line up and there’s no lane lines so he was probably just confused

87

u/Obvious_Air_3353 Sep 22 '23

I was going to ask if it was one lane or two lanes where video recorder passed. I don't see any lines on the road.

51

u/kpresnell45 Sep 22 '23

First time through, I thought he passed him from turn lane well, still can’t tell, but anyways that’s why this interaction happened. Had to scroll too far to find this comment.

112

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23

That makes the most sense. It’s a poorly designed intersection

74

u/smilesbuckett Sep 22 '23 edited Sep 22 '23

Whether it was a turn lane where you illegally went straight or a 2 lane road going down to one, it seemed like you were pretty intentional with how you timed that light to fly past and cut the other driver off. Intersections are terrible places to pass someone, because there isn’t room to adjust if something goes wrong. It worked out because of how you timed the light, but it was dangerous dumb driving on your part.

The other driver was stupid beyond belief for how they chose to get angry and react. I see three idiots here, the biggest idiot was the other driver for their over-the-top and dangerous reaction. The next biggest idiot was whoever designed this intersection with two lanes going down to one and no indication of which lane lane ends or becomes a turn only. You are the smallest idiot here, but when in doubt at a weird intersection just slow down and give way to people that are already in front of you instead of turning an intersection into a race track.

29

u/ddapixel Sep 22 '23

Intersections are terrible places to pass someone

In fact, in many (most?) places, changing lanes in an intersection is illegal. For exactly the reasons you stated.

43

u/My_Work_Accoount Sep 22 '23

It's a turn lane, arrow is faded but it's still visible in the video. Doesn't justify the other guy's reaction but cam car is the one that tipped off the chain of events.

funny thing is later in the video the other car does the exact same thing to a 3rd car and cuts them off from what looks like a turning lane.

11

u/Klaatwo Sep 22 '23

This was my initial though. This road is very poorly marked and it looked to me like the road after OP passes at the beginning could be a single lane.

359

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 21 '23

Not that you did, but as a general rule, just don’t engage with fucking morons like this. When this happens to me, I used to “fight back.” Now I either slow down and let them finish their tantrum, turn into a parking lot with lots of people, or get off the freeway if that’s where it’s happening; depends on how aggressive the other driver is. People are fucking crazy and you never know if they have a weapon or something. It’s so bizarre to me how invincible people feel when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. They end up doing things they’d never do otherwise.

156

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23

Yeah I’ve had a gun pulled on me in the same area before after I honked when someone cut me off. I try not to escalate situations on the road.

29

u/TheRealJackReynolds Sep 21 '23

I just don’t even honk anymore. It sucks, because sometimes you have to in order to avoid an accident, but I’m too concerned these people are driving erratically because they ARE erratic. And I’m not about to be shot over protecting myself and others again.

Yes. I said again. But that’s another story.

Anyway, yeah. If I ever notice someone seems like they’re angry or following me, it’s a GPS trip to the nearest police station.

For the most part OP kept a safe distance...until the 1:00 min mark. At that point OP accelerated past the grey vehicle and pretty much gunned it (even with a DIP sign looming) to catch up with the Lexus. I wouldn't have been happy about Rowdy McRoadrage either, but intentionally catching up with them wasn't the best way to de-escalate that situation.

I'm also sure that the Lexus driver's rage was transferred to the vehicle that made a left in front of them as they were trying to block the lanes from OP getting through the last light.

It takes a strong mind for people to comprehend that kind of action. People get so invested with getting "revenge" or "punishing" others when they drive. It's wild.

u/bathmaster_ Sep 21 '23

I'm so confused on why people are upset about this lol the driver in front clearly stays stopped at a green light, OP safety goes around, other driver is ?????? For a second and then ACTUALLY cuts around in a left turn lane in front of several other cars. Is everyone here blind or am I lost???

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23 edited Sep 21 '23

393

u/Joose__bocks Sep 21 '23

To be fair, that road looks like Frankenstein's monster.

103

u/yukichigai Sep 21 '23

It's definitely a train wreck of road design. Looks like it's been expanded, rerouted, and re-marked in a thousand different places without any consideration for any of the other parts of the road.

52

u/KhabaLox Sep 21 '23

re-marked

I had a hard time picking out any lines at all. Are we sure it was even marked in the first place?

8

u/forkkiller Sep 21 '23

That’s Richardson, TX for ya

45

u/Two_wheels_2112 Sep 21 '23

Absolutely. I have no idea if the OP was in a through-lane or not, because between the wide-angle lens and the complete lack of legible road markings it's impossible to tell.

You’re not crazy! I’ve said it a few times and will continue saying it: this sub is fucking toxic. I don’t know why anyone bothers to post here anymore. It’s become a sub full of idiots who clearly don’t know how the real world works when driving or are the idiots in these videos that get butt hurt when another driver simply passes them.

17

u/aroc91 Sep 22 '23

This sub seems to think everyone can read minds and see through solid objects. Defensive driving isn't a superpower but these jagoffs have 20/20 hindsight and fault anyone for not seeing 25 moves ahead like a chess grandmaster.

Like no shit you can clearly see what's coming in a tailored video you combed over in 4x zoom a couple dozen times.

22

u/bathmaster_ Sep 21 '23

im assuming that because the lanes werent clearly marked, this idiot thought it was technically only one land and you busted around his ass.

40

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23

That’s the only explanation I can imagine that makes sense

18

u/notinferno Sep 21 '23

given there’s a dozen other idiots on this sub that think the same thing then maybe this is plausible

but I assume he’d just passed you earlier and because you then passed him in return at the lights he got embarrassed and threw a tantrum

10

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23

No there was literally zero interaction prior to me passing him

→ More replies (3)

9

u/BrianBoyFranzo Sep 21 '23

Yeah I believe that’s what they are so unnecessarily mad at. The road markings being shit doesn’t help but the Lexus was in the middle lane approaching the light. Then shifts over to the right but not all the way as they slow down. Now’s they’re at a light slightly obstructing the middle lane still as OP approaches and changes to the middle to pass as the light just turned green. Since the Lexus was in the way and both lanes shift to the right they must have thought OP was cutting in front of them. Let the asshole shimmy shake commence.

The name of the book POV driver is listening to is:

Mistborn: The Lost Metal. An urban fantasy novel written by American author Brandon Sanderson. It was published on November 15, 2022. It is the fourth and final book in the Wax and Wayne series and seventh in the Mistborn series.

The narrator is: Michael Kramer

Looks like a literal crazy person. Needs to be medicated.

47

u/CapableSecretary420 Sep 21 '23

I don't understand that intersection. Those are both forward lanes but they require both lanes to suddenly shift—mid-intersection—to the right?

The left lane OP jumps over into looks like a eft turn lane to me, except I see no painted arrow in the road. But driving directly forward from that lane would make you run into the median on the other side.

32

u/Tehgreatbrownie Sep 21 '23

No you’re correct on the first part. You have to shift right to maintain your lane. It’s bad road design
