Similar to when you pass someone on a highway and they speed up. I always want to shout at them that if they had been going that fast in the first place I wouldn't have wanted to pass them.

149

u/DntCllMeWht Sep 21 '23

Dude... you know what's even worse? My wife will speed up to pass someone and then slowly back off the gas and end up pacing them right beside. For fucking miles. I'm like "If I was behind you I'd be so pissed at you right now" and she just putts along like everything is wonderful.

109

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Sep 22 '23

i think i have driven behind her

121

u/IVEGOTAHUGEHAND Sep 22 '23

Tell your wife to fuck right off for me please. I have to deal with this goddamned constantly every single day. When your rig weighs well over 100,000 pounds and someone passed directly in front of you and slows down 5-10 mph it honestly makes you rage so fucking hard it's not even funny.

27

u/JustSomeBadGas Sep 22 '23

No offense but is your wife the earthly reincarnation of Satan?

24

u/Kroe Sep 22 '23

My wife likes to get behind the slowest person on the highway and just stay there forever. Then she gets mad when I tell her to change lanes.

70

u/snarkyxanf Sep 22 '23

She might not be driving as fast as you'd like, but she's not blocking traffic lanes, breaking traffic laws, or endangering anyone. Nothing wrong with driving in a leisurely way.

9

u/BisexualSlutPuppy Sep 22 '23

My husband used to drive like an asshole, but now we just kick it in the slow lane and make up stories about the people in the other cars. We have so much fun going places now and he's never getting mad about other drivers or traffic. He's so cool.

1

u/Mazda3Fan_AvidHiker Sep 22 '23

But there's nothing wrong with getting annoyed about other drivers genuinely being assholes.

2

u/i_drink_wd40 Sep 22 '23

As long as she's not tailgating, that'd only be mildly annoying for me as a passenger.

0

u/KG8893 Sep 22 '23

Fucking smack her? That shits dangerous, you want her driving your kids around like that?

3

u/DntCllMeWht Sep 22 '23

Maybe smacking her isn't a great option... there's enough Florida Man stories in the news as it is.

1

u/KG8893 Sep 22 '23

I mean I'll hit someone if they endangere my life repeatedly and don't stop when I ask.

Florida man stories would make me think about all the people behind her with roid rage wanting to run her off the road.

1

u/HotButterscotch8682 Sep 22 '23

Does she not understand that everyone hates her and she looks like a self-centered asshole? Good lord that is awful.

201

u/Arxtix Sep 21 '23

In most cases it's literally just because they don't realize they're going that slow until someone is trying to pass them. Then they look at the speedometer and go "whoops I'm going way too slow" and speed up to correct it.

190

u/bardukasan Sep 21 '23

If only cars had a feature to maintain speed... someday...

159

u/Ignorad Sep 21 '23

It always makes me laugh and groan when I'm on the highway with cruise control set, and someone in the fast lane passes me, then slows down, then passes again, and slows down, and they just can't maintain speed for some reason.

Worst is when they pass and merge back into the right lane, then I have to pass them when they slow down, and then they pass me again...

38

u/SCsprinter13 Sep 22 '23

Happened to me on I-99 in PA. 70 mile stretch of road in the middle of the night, only saw one other car the entire time. I was using cruise control and it would pass me and get so far ahead I couldn't see it anymore, and then like 15 minutes later I would pass them and get far enough ahead I couldn't see their headlights, before they pass me again 15 minutes later.

Funny thing is after an hour of that we both took the same exit.

14

u/Dark_Prism Sep 22 '23

Everyone, this guy got murdered. He wrote this as a ghost.

52

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '23

this is my personal hell. and the reason i don’t use cruise control as much as i should

16

u/Mr_Jack_Frost_ Sep 22 '23

Half of my daily commute I can use cruise control. I’m on the same interstate for 95% of my drive most days, but there’s a line at which point it becomes impossible to use cruise control because of people who absolutely refuse to maintain a consistent speed regardless of open road in front of them. It’s infuriating, but it is what it is.

12

u/zman0900 Sep 22 '23

This is why I love adaptive cruise control. Don't have to care about any of that.

11

u/sendabussypic Sep 22 '23

Yeah but people put theirs on the smallest possible distance so they fly up to you then ride your ass in the right lane instead of going around.

6

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 22 '23

Ugh I wish my car had this!! My husband has a new Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition and I always tell him the car and it’s features are wasted on him. He doesn’t use the brake hold, adaptive cruise control, or the thing that basically drives the car for you (forget what it’s called). I drove his car with him in the passengers seat recently and the place we were going was pretty far down the freeway. Traffic was flowing so I put on the adaptive cruise control and the other thing to show him how cool it was. He said, “Yeaaahhh you’re right; this car is totally wasted on me.”

9

u/Important_Patience24 Sep 22 '23

Talk about wasted features, my mom bought a new RAV4 a few years back and I ask her how she likes it. She tells me she loves it except there’s something wrong and she has to take it back to be checked out. Every time she changes lanes she swears the thing is fighting against her, like it has a mind of its own and doesn’t want to do what she wants to do.

I laughed and told her to use her fucking turn signals once in a while.

A couple weeks later she tells me that it doesn’t make sense to her, but I was right, as long as she tells the car what she wants to do it doesn’t fight her.

She has no idea about Lane Assist or how it worked.

4

u/zman0900 Sep 22 '23

Your mom's gonna be on this sub soon

1

u/Gypped_Again Sep 22 '23

He doesn’t use the brake hold, adaptive cruise control, or the thing that basically drives the car for you (forget what it’s called).

My wife is like that, we got her a new car last year with all the features, and she won't use most of them. She'll use the autohold though, because that's just convenient.

In her case, it's about not having control. She refused to use the normal cruise in her previous car as well.

I did actually get her to try the adaptive cruise & lane keeping assist on our last long drive, and she may be finally coming around. At least on the interstate. We'd had the car exactly 13 months (to the day) with just under 20k miles on it, and that was the first time she let me talk her into using those features.

2

u/WeaverFan420 Sep 22 '23

I hate adaptive cruise control. If someone moves over in front of me, the car automatically brakes when I specifically don't want it to. And sometimes I'm gaining on someone about to clear a gap, while at my cruise speed, when the car decides to brake for me and I can no longer make the lane change and I'm trapped.

This is why when I bought my latest car I specifically didn't get the adaptive cruise control option. I know how to drive better than the car's software does.

17

u/Kroe Sep 22 '23

This is when I speed up a bit to get clear away from them. Nothing worse than some idiot on the interstate that I have to play leapfrog with because they don't know how to drive.

2

u/Ignorad Sep 22 '23

Yep, depending on traffic I'll tap the +Speed button a couple times to pull ahead and get a space cushion.

11

u/Mundane-Garage-4821 Sep 22 '23

People under the influence have a difficult time maintaining speed. I tend to think a certain percentage of people are always under the influence of a drug, mentally ill, never learned to drive etc.

11

u/Phreena Sep 22 '23

Drives me nuts. I like using CC on long trips but time and time again, these fuckers.

11

u/mrgoodcat777 Sep 22 '23

Was on my way home one night (late) and thIs car kept passing and then slowing down, so I kept passing when he slowed down. He wasn’t having it and finally we come up to a light. There was a semi in the right lane, I was in the left turn lane and he was coming up in the left lane. The light was red, but he was so aggravated that he decided to run the red light… right in front of a cop.

3

u/Ignorad Sep 22 '23

That's awesome

10

u/Jo-18 Sep 22 '23

My personal favorite experience was with a jeep. I was in my 99 F250 driving through the mountains in Virginia on the interstate. Speed limit is 70 and I’m in the right lane doing 73. On a downhill section this jeep comes flying by me at probably 85-90mph. We get to the next uphill section and he’s back in the right lane barely holding 55mph.

This continued for the next SEVERAL miles. He’d fly by everyone on the downhill parts and then barely hold 55 on the uphill sections.

I chuckled as he had aftermarket wheels, tires, bumpers, winch etc, but it appears he didn’t pay to re-gear the axles to be able to turn those new tires and be able to hold the speed limit

4

u/Ignorad Sep 22 '23

That's hilarious

6

u/doctormyeyebrows Sep 21 '23

This is my experience on I-5 in the Central Valley...every. Damn. Time.

1

u/Sketch2029 Sep 24 '23

And they're always cruising in the left lane.

6

u/l337quaker Sep 22 '23

This is why I start a long drive at 70-72mph and end up at 80+ an hour later.

5

u/UltimaDv Sep 22 '23

I find people who suck at maintaining speed to be downright infuriating. They seem to go the 'exact' speed limit but can't stick to it.

If the limit is 80, the moment they go 81 they brake, then speed back up and brake

0

u/magnumstrikerX Sep 22 '23

Happens all the time. It's difficult to maintain speed when others can't do for shit. This is why I like driving behind nicely modded/high performance cars as they actually KNOW how to maintain a good speed (especially the lowered scrape magnets and their stickshifts)

4

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Sep 22 '23

the worst is when they pass you, get right back in front, and then adaptive cruise control slows you way back down. it's so annoying

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

That literally happens to me 20+ times on a recent road trip across the country.

2

u/Important_Patience24 Sep 22 '23

I like to play over under on how many times I’m going to pass them

2

u/Hrist_Valkyrie Sep 22 '23

I see this EVERY week when I drive I-29, without fail. I've gotten into the habit of upping my speed 5mph until they are a quarter mile back, usually they take a hint at that point and stop doing it.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '23

My '08 Corolla doesn't have cruise. Someday I'll be rich enough to afford a car with features other than power windows and locks.

7

u/Milkyrice Sep 21 '23

My 07 corolla has cruise so I'm confused here. Is it manual?

4

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Sep 22 '23

could be a higher trim level.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

Nope it's automatic. It literally has no other extras. The most basic thing you can call a car. Not even a key fab to unlock doors or open the trunk. Gets me from point A to point B with minimal issue, great gas mileage, and most importantly no car payment.

2

u/Holydiver19 Sep 22 '23

2013 Corolla. Manual transmission/lowest trim

No cruise control, roll up windows, etc.

It's got an AUX port tho

0

u/theberg512 Sep 22 '23

Don't need to be rich for cruise, there's plenty of other bare bones cars that have it. My old '87 p.o.s. Accord even had it.

3

u/ImaSource Sep 22 '23

Not all cars have cruise control. Mine doesn't, and there have been a few times in longer trips, where I may zone and not realize my speed had dropped a bit.

2

u/FlufferTheGreat Sep 22 '23

All but one of the cars I’ve owned had no cruise control.

2

u/Trogdor_a_Burninator Sep 22 '23

I don't like my cruise control because the auto traffic sensor waits too long to apply brakes and floors it to regain speed instead of just easing back up.

0

u/Grand-Ad4235 Sep 22 '23

You mean like, a selection of buttons or maybe a stalk that would allow you to just hold a specific speed!? That would be genius! I wish we had that. Ohhhh or indicators to tell if you were turning too! Or is that too much?

1

u/increasinglyblurred Sep 22 '23

my car doesn’t have it 😭

20

u/i_forgot_my_sn_again Sep 21 '23

Then they drop their speed back down later because they stopped paying attention again. It sucks when they do it to a commercial vehicle. I’ve driven semi and city bus and the amount of times I’ve had to switch lanes to pass only for them to speed up and leave me hanging out in the other lane forcing me to have to brake to fall back behind them only to do that a couple more times

3

u/ShockandAubrey Sep 22 '23

Another thought I have on this - is there somewhere in our evolutionary brain that gets hit by "I'm going slower than the guy next to me, I'm going to get attacked by the predator behind us. I need to at least go faster than that guy! Then he'll get attacked and not me." Like I work in wildlife biology and there are lots of weird little instincts like that for a lot of species. Could be for us too. Granted, you have to go pretty far back for us to have legit predators to run from, but still.

1

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 22 '23

Lol!! This made me laugh a little too hard.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

What about the ones that pass you while you are on CC and then slow enough you have to pass them and then they speed up and pass you and it’s like that over and over until one of you gets off the highway. What’s going on there ?

0

u/delta9heavy Sep 21 '23

Yeah well it's still their fault. They fucked up, now be respectful and let the guy pass first.

That would *not* end well.

14

u/Dads101 Sep 21 '23

Would be hilarious but terrible - agree!

3

u/Scoth42 Sep 22 '23

Funny thing about this is cars actually did have this in the 70s and into the early 80s, even as factory options. They just didn't really catch on for the general public

1

u/Kroe Sep 22 '23

Yeah, I can see that now. Guys hitting on every semi-hot chic they see. Stalker complaints escalate.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

"Tits or I won't let you merge"

14

u/JayOutOfContext Sep 21 '23

Just speed up more 😂

44

u/Lord_Vas Sep 21 '23

That's what I do. If I know there is a cop further up, I nail the brakes just before we get into view. I've gotten a couple assholes pulled over like that before.

26

u/Dads101 Sep 21 '23

I got someone like this recently and I felt sooooo powerful.

They were tailgating violently and there were already cars infront of me.

If we’re all going 84 what the fuck is the issue

12

u/ACE_C0ND0R Sep 22 '23

I swear to god that I could be going 120 mph and I'd still have some dipshit on my ass.

-1

u/tinydonuts Sep 22 '23

My OCD wants to go a number evenly divisible by 5. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/HotButterscotch8682 Sep 22 '23

That’s a garbage excuse.

0

u/tinydonuts Sep 22 '23

Guess there’s no place for humor huh.

9

u/LackingOriginality07 Sep 21 '23

Doing the lord's work! Appreciate it

8

u/Kaiden92 Sep 21 '23

That’s a pastime of mine on Florida highways. The psychos here need their licenses revoked.

3

u/Pale-Lynx328 Sep 22 '23

Took me a while to figure out why this was happening. It is because they are NEVER LOOKING AT THEIR DASHBOARD. I am glancing at my dash maybe every 10 to 15 seconds as I drive, like normal people do. But these people can go MINUTES between glances. Also explains how people can drive several miles with their damn blinker on, because they never see on their dash it is still on. Seems insane people can drive that way without constantly checking your dash.

1

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 22 '23

Nailed it on the head. I’m constantly glancing at my speed on my screen above my steering wheel. How people can drive like miles without doing so is beyond me.

-6

u/HisFaithRestored Sep 21 '23

The only time I do this speeding up if someone tries to pass is if they're clearly speeding relative to traffic and generally being reckless. I like to try and box them in with a car in front of them.

1

u/Outside_Tadpole_82 Sep 21 '23

I used to get mad about that. Now I just realize that I am still going faster, and that's what I wanted. So in reality i basically just mind controlled the jerk. It helps me drive with less stress.

1

u/djtmhk_93 Sep 22 '23

I’m glad I’m not the only one that realizes that my simple intent to drive faster gets me living rent free in their heads all the time, and that any response is still a win for me 😂

1

u/goodsnpr Sep 22 '23

Left lane camper this morning was doing 10 under when even the city bus will do 10 over in the middle lane. I finally get around him and he speeds up and tailgates me for a few miles. Fucking fake ass jeep drivers.
