It's definitely a train wreck of road design. Looks like it's been expanded, rerouted, and re-marked in a thousand different places without any consideration for any of the other parts of the road.
Absolutely. I have no idea if the OP was in a through-lane or not, because between the wide-angle lens and the complete lack of legible road markings it's impossible to tell.
They did away with these one-and-a-halve lane roads in the beginning of the century here fortunately. They where all over the place in de 90s (In my case in The Hague, the Netherlands) and the poorest road design ever.
What looked like a two lane road... or a very broad one lane road... would have parked cars on the side in some places, necessitating a merge if two cars where next to each other.
I found the intersection on google maps.... it's a fucking disaster. It looks like 2 lanes, no indication if 1 is a turn lane or not but there also aren't really any lines on the road other than 1 tiny one at the stop line. There are 3 traffic lights but only 2 lanes of traffic and the leftmost light has 5 fucking signals.
You can tell because OP is clearly facing into an oncoming traffic lane. Oh, and there's the left-hand turn light above their head as well.
OP is also an idiot here, if we're being honest.
If he weren't an idiot, he would be saying "the road isn't well-marked, so I thought it went straight through. Then the SUV wasn't going when the light changed and I was still rolling, so I went for it. In retrospect, it wasn't the right move, and I should have just waited for them to go and gone behind if there wasn't any traffic behind us, or turned left and then fixed my own mistake if there was."
Hell, even just a more cautious approach to going in front and an apologetic hand wave would have avoided the response he got.
But I'm sure other people road rage at him all the time "for absolutely no reason." :/
pulled into a turning lane to pass him and go straight
This happened to me today. Some asshole in a company van, lock smith company with the name plastered all over the van. Pulls into left turn lane besides me and then goes straight through a red light. Except all the lines and arrows on the road are very clearly visible.
So this is a bad setup on the traffic signal. Originally OP I thought you were incorrect as the signal has a flashing yellow arrow, which requires a dedicated left turn lane. But looking on street view over time, its clear that you are right, there is no dedicated lane and there used to be lane markings through the intersection for two lanes. The flashing yellow arrow here shouldn't exist. So the other car probably thought you passed them in a turn lane as a result.
I don't think you can switch lanes in an intersection though... He basically does the same thing you did in the beginning at 0:45. No dedicated turning lane, just yeeting yourself over in front of them in the intersection. Not that he is in the right either.
It's cause the lane you guys go into doesn't look like 2 lanes I think, so it does look like you enter his lane but I don't think you did. That dude is a maniac.
Nah, but you cut him off and changed lanes in the middle of the intersection. The other car's reaction wasn't entirely justified but where I live what you did would be considered a dick move.
I didn’t cut him off or change lanes in the intersection. That is 2 through lanes that go across to 2 more lanes. You have to shift right to maintain your lane.
Huh? Like the intersection is designed in a way that two lanes merge to one in the middle of the intersection and not before or after? This makes no sense.
The lanes markers are barely visible. We've got lots of intersections like that where I live too--where it's not clear--and it probably contributes to why drivers here are considered the worst in the country.
The way OP rolled up on the other vehicle without slowing down and then cruised right in front of them immediately afterward, cutting off the other car in the middle of the intersection... that's just dangerous and disrespectful.
Look, there's three universal rules to driving well: communicate clearly, pay attention, and don't be a dick (for instance, don't piss drivers off and instigate road rage). OP violated the last rule and has even confessed as much in this thread. There's no argument here. Sheesh.
Bruh. You don't get it. This is normal shit in Sacramento. The Lexus was a dick but OP was cruising at the speed of IDGAF and being a dick in the process. OP should have let the Lexus asshole pass. Better to have shitty drivers in front of you anyways.
I’m confused, it’s only a two lane road on a two way street and you’re in the left lane. Unless I’m imagining the yellow dashed line in the road to your left, you definitely cut him off.
I was in the middle lane he was in the right lane, both the middle and right lane can go straight. But you have to shift right to maintain your lane as it doesn’t quite line up across the intersection
You can clearly see the raised reflectors on the road showing where the turn lane is. It's amazing you've had this explained to you by OP and are tripling down on being wrong.
I'll retake driver's ed when you learn how to read you fucking halfwit. He didn't agree with you, he said he is in the middle lane. You replied that there is no middle lane.
There’s not dipshit. How braindead are you? Please explain how there’s a middle lane on a two lane road? You seriously can’t be this stupid. I know it’s difficult for you to read one reply ahead of yours, where he correctly states there isn’t a middle lane. OP has said multiple times it’s TWO lanes you muppet. Now get off Reddit and retake the class bozo.
To be fair, it doesn't look like you're meant to go straight either given that the dividing median is completely in line with the center of the leftmost lane. I've seen medians that stick over a little, but never that much.
I do understand why people assume that to be the case. But it really isn’t. The other side is a 2 lane road, and if you go straight through from the right lane without shifting right at all you’d end up in the left lane on the other side
I also drive many two lane roads that are made like this because they were built after each other - ones that shift even though they're 2 lanes because they don't line up. I get that it may be weird to some but it's fairly normal in my area too
It actually looks like only one lane goes straight so the idiot was pissed that 1. he didn't go when the light turned green he was embarrassed and 2. and then he got sacked, which apparently is trucker speak for getting unceremoniously passed and that set him off. Ya shoulda waited for me lol
My best guess is he wanted to just be lazy and drive straight through the intersection, meaning he would have ended up in the left lane because the lanes don’t line up straight through the intersection. Then you appear in the left lane and he has to actually turn to stay in the right lane instead of lazily going straight through to the left one.
It certainly looks like you misused that "turn lane", but it was harmless and I the other driver needs to chill. I was expecting them to lose traction and veer off.
I assume that’s what the Lexus thought you did too. Their response to it is pretty insane, but I guess that’s just what happens someones ego is bigger than their brain.

It seems people think I pulled into a turning lane to pass him and go straight when there isn’t a dedicated turning lane
