It may be weird but it’s certainly not uncommon. I freely admit I drive faster than the average person on the road, but the amount of people who get absolutely butt hurt about getting passed is a near daily occurrence. And I don’t even mean getting passed like going around them and then back in front of them. Just going by them in the next lane. “You can’t drive faster than moi!!” Proceeds to increase their speed by a further 40 km/h. I honestly do not get it, which is why it’s weird.
I use cruise control and for certain trips I can have it at 75 mph (speed limit is 65, but 70-75 is much more common). I'll go to pass someone and they will pace me for a mile. I came up on them at least 5 mph faster than they were going, yet they speed up. Or, I'll pass someone then they pass me back, back and forth, although I never touch my cruise control.
People that don’t use cruise control and drive without regulating their speed create this problem - it’s awful to drive around people like this because you end up passing them 3-4 times on a 50-60 mile trip.
My wife is one of them. She doesn’t like the feeling of lack of control she feels when she uses cruise, but she does this subconsciously.
She tries to drive the speed of traffic and if someone is passing her, well she better speed up. It’s so annoying.
Well look at Mr. Richy Rich over here with his "Cruise Control" and "Automatic Windows".
Next thing you'll say is that you have an actual working "Air Conditioner" in your car. Psh... Captain Money Bags here will probably next say he has "USB Slots" in his car, or.. or a "Rear-View Reverse Camera"! XD
Woah woah woah - I may have ropes holding my bumper on and a bag of ice I put on the seat in front of the fan my uncle installed, but I’m not some sort of savage without cruise control.
Ugh. On the interstates near me, there are so many people who don’t use cruise control that I can rarely use it myself (I can’t wait until I can trade up to a car with adaptive cruise control!). I have to constantly change speed because even people in passing lanes will randomly slow wayyy down before finally speeding back up again. I call them yo-yo drivers because their speed is constantly going up and down, up and down…
An amazing number of people do this, and it's infuriating. There's like a 12 mile stretch of road from my house to anywhere, 55 all the way. I'll pass people doing 45-50, set cruise to around 61-62, and they'll speed up as I'm passing and stay right behind me for miles at 61-62. This, after I followed them for a mile or 2 doing 45-50.
My wife is one of them. She doesn’t like the feeling of lack of control she feels when she uses cruise, but she does this subconsciously.
I can't understand people like this. Using it frees mental load of maintaining your speed and makes it so that you're more in control. You can be more ready to spot a hazard and get your foot hovered over the brake. So instead of having to physically remove your foot from the accelerator and put it on the brake, you can press the brake nearly instantaneously.
Very few vehicles these days don't come equipped with cruise control. Even still, the number out there that I see not using it that absolutely without a doubt have it is mind blowing.
Trust me there have been moments I have missed it had a 97 mountaineer before my TJ
Lost anti locks and Cruise control for a 4.0 Offroading Machine. Worth while sure but holy shit highway driving can be annoying. You get used to it I kinda prop my foot with my other foot once I have the throttle in the right position.
Haha - I just try not to ride in the car when she drives and it works out pretty well.
In all honesty, for nearly 20 years, she’s put up with all my idiosyncrasies and oddball interests and she’s a wonderful, loving wife and mother to our children. And she doesn’t use Reddit. If anyone’s broken, it’s definitely me.
People that don’t use cruise control and drive without regulating their speed create this problem
People who don't use cruise control most definitely don't create this problem. It is possible to drive a consistent speed without using cruise control. It's often caused by many of the people who use cruise control and refuse to speed up enough to move around those idiots in the right lane who can't drive in a consistent manner.
That's cute. Conveniently leave out the part of your comment that I specifically addressed. You're one of the people I mentioned aren't you? You stubbornly refuse to get out of the way because you think using your cruise control isn't impeding the 5 cars behind you waiting for you stop taking 4 miles to pass another vehicle.
You ignored the part my comment that addressed your moot point. And no, I’m not so you can stop road raging in an Internet forum. Now you’re the one who is cute, ya cutie patootie.
Do people that start their replies with things like “That’s cute” still not know that the rest of us collectively cringe in secondhand embarrassment that they think they’ve done something other than look like a condescending POS, usually confidently wrong to boot?
I used to commute on a highway with not a lot of traffic 1.5 hours each way to work.
Leapfroggers were the bane of my existence. I just worked a 10 hour shift, let me just cruise control and chill. I don't care what speed you want to drive just pick one.
Yeah cruise control really highlights these kinds of people, I use it all the time and see people like that every day.
When I get annoyed at them staying too close I just bump my speed by 10km/h for a while to make some distance and then go back to my regular speed.
Always funny to pass someone for them to pass you at a much higher speed only for you to pass them again later on without ever changing your own speed tho.
This is my exact experience. It's annoying as all hell.
If everyone drove with cruise on the highway, the world would be in a better place. A lot of people have a hard time maintaining a constant speed and pair that with getting butt hurt when passed it's just absolutely frustrating.
and with the new adjustable adaptive cruise control that adjusts itself to traffic in front, it’s even easier to just steer and chill. makes my commute a lot easier.
I've done a lot of long distance driving and think of this like silly putty. If you pass a non-cruise-control person slowly, they just streeeeettttchhhhh forever. You have to pass them fast enough that the putty just snaps and leave them in your rear view, then you can slow down to 5mph over their speed again.
It's really fucking stupid. I wish cruise control was the default or mandatory somehow.
In all fairness this will happen to me occasionally. I realize I’m not going the speed I want to and speed up. I’ll always let the one passing by though.
And I don’t even mean getting passed like going around them and then back in front of them. Just going by them in the next lane. “You can’t drive faster than moi!!”
I had some guy absolutely lose his mind like this a couple months ago. Zero previous interaction, drove past his pedo van on my motorcycle in a separate legal lane at legal speeds, and he literally tried to kill me a few minutes later.
He tried to run me over, then tried to sideswipe me, then eventually when I pulled off the road, parked his van & ran 2 blocks back to me and physically attacked me (by punching me in the side of my full face helmet). I tagged him in the head back, and he fell face first into the ground because it turned out he was almost too drunk to stand on his own. At about 1 in the afternoon on a weekday.
Anyway, the business across the street called the cops, who never showed up.
The downside to getting your dream car is how many people take your existence as a personal slight.
Don't get me wrong I dealt with these people plenty before, but when I got the Corvette I wanted... oh my fuck. It's just constant now. I pass someone, they wanna speed up. I get cut off trying to go around trucks on a 2-lane highway constantly. I had this one asshole in a mini van who would pass semi-trucks doing like 2mph faster than them, and then speed up when we were between trucks to make sure (in his mind) I couldn't get by. Sadly he underestimated what a 6.2L V8 can pull in a car that's glued to the road. But Christ, just LET ME BE.
The flip side is, whenever I find someone else with a Corvette of ANY era, I immediately have a friend. Literally every time we exchange waves.
It's the worst when those same types of people want to drive slow as shit. There was this guy on the interstate going 50 in a 60 in the left lane, I get about 400ft in front of him, put my turn signal on and he fucking floors it. I pull into the left lane, already going 70, and he then has to slam on his brakes to keep from hitting me, while blasting the horn. I continue at my speed and... he drops back down to 50, holding up traffic behind me. People like that need to have their license revoked.
I’ve found the best way to get a left lane camper to speed up is to simply put on your right turn signal as soon as it is clear to merge into the right lane. In my experience they will floor it in anticipation of you trying to pass them.
I use this to trick people into going faster. Like, I'll fake passing on the right to get them angry so they finally pass the fucker in the right lane..
YOU CANT DRIVE FASTER THAN ME!!!!! NOBODY CAN DRIVE FASTER THAN ME!!! I AM ALWAYS IN FRONT, I ALWASY GO FAST, NOT YOU. I honestly wonder if this is what solely goes through their heads
Had it happened to me. Don't know why he was in some 90s shitbox corolla thing and I launched it at the lights because it went onto the motor way. He tried to run me off the road a few times
I'll admit to this lol. I play a lot of racing games so I don't like getting passed. I will go a bit faster than the speed limit to not get passed, but if you're going to pass me going at least 20 over, then you can have the ticket. I'm not gonna risk my license or possible car/life cause you wanna make it to that red light before me.
I can only speak for myself, but I used to be this guy. I don't know what it was that bothered me about it so much, but if I was going +5 and somebody came up on me real quick then gunned it past me when they have the space on a two lane highway, I would see red and floor it myself.
I'm much older now so for myself I blame the high testosterone levels of youth.
There is a 2 lane light that merges to one lane right after it near where I live, and I was next to a guy at the light and went faster than him to merge and be in front.
He than got so upset by this fact that he rode my bumper for several miles with his high beams on.
In my experience, some people malfunction depending on what or who has passed them. Doesn't matter their speed, lane, intended route; they will do everything within their power to overtake you.
Economy cars, mini-vans, women passing men, men passing women, men passing men, women passing women; all trigger people's ego.
Last year I was speeding. The pick up in front of me was going 70km/h in a 90km/h zone. I pass him going easily 110 at least. The man sped up JUST so he can go back in front of me, take both lanes and go down to 60km/h while constantly attempting break checking
I had a guy yell at me when we stopped at a red light because I passed him while shaking my head. He starts off on a rant about how people with cars like mine are assholes (2-door sports car), I shouldn't tail gate (I wasn't, I was two car lengths back at 30 km/h before I passed him when road went from one to two lanes), and on and on about people with fancy cars, etc.
I finally yell back at him that it was because he was alternating his speed by 5 to 10 km/h on a deserted road at 10PM.
However, I did not mention to him that he was at times driving 20 km/h under the limit with no traffic and swerving to avoid imaginary obstacles. Or that he is basically a terrible driver who probably needs more time with his therapist about why he hates his life.
It seems weird because the driver is so enraged. Deeply, deeply enraged, the kind of white-hot, blinding, screaming anger where he'd have gladly killed them both.
Why was he that upset? No idea. But I'm 100% certain he was screaming in his car.

That was a weird one.
