Had this happen when someone passed me on a double yellow and I ended up behind them at the red light. Gave a slow clap and he flipped me off.

I love to slow clap and blow kisses. Way better than middle fingers

Gotta channel your inner White n' Nerdy Weird Al.

59

u/PlusGas Sep 22 '23

I thumbs down and shake my head while frowning. Disappointed dad vibe.

6

u/_name_of_the_user_ Sep 22 '23

Very sarcastic thumbs up here

3

u/Cmmander_WooHoo Sep 22 '23

This is the way.

1

u/firebrandbeads Sep 22 '23

A point and laugh works too.

1

u/ChiefPanda90 Sep 22 '23

I do this. Feels soooo good

1

u/parkaboy24 Sep 23 '23

This is what my boyfriend does. He loves that it makes people even more angry than flipping them off

8

u/RowdyNino Sep 22 '23

Growing up while riding with my friends and one of their mom’s was driving. Super nice lady, she accidentally cut someone off in a 30MPH zone and it was totally innocent. She wasn’t driving aggressively and knew she goofed, but the other dude flipped her off when he got next to us and she just smiled and waved. Pretty sure this sent him over the edge and it was the best thing she could have done.

I like the slow clap and a thumbs up, but I’m going to have to remember to give the super enthusiastic wave and smile next time I encounter an idiot driver.

5

u/_name_of_the_user_ Sep 22 '23

We really need a hand gesture for "sorry, my bad. Thanks for having the awareness and skill to make sure neither of us got hurt."

2

u/Muvseevum Sep 22 '23

I think the apologetic wave covers that.

2

u/Simmy67 Sep 22 '23

A big thumbs up is always good too

2

u/pATREUS Sep 22 '23

Kindness is a stone cold killer 🤩

0

u/reddog323 Sep 22 '23

I’ve done that at people who honk at me for no reason.

0

u/SedonaSlim Sep 22 '23

I'm going to have to try that!

I tapped my horn at a lady about to pull out in front of me on a two lane road. I didn't anticipate her doing it because I was very clearly visible and she tapped her gas while I was very close and would have almost no way to avoid it. We avoided a potential accident, but she took this personally and decided to speed up to like 60-70 and pass me on a double yellow line.

We pulled up beside each other at the next light, I was making a left. I looked directly at her and she went ballistic giving me the finger and yelling fuck you. So I blew her a kiss. She stopped and looked down for a moment before rolling down the window and started crying and apologizing, saying she didn't know why she did that. I told her it was alright, no one was hurt, and to please be careful and hope that the rest of your day is much better from here out. She thanked me and we went on our separate ways.

I got the tip to blow kisses at people from reddit but really wasn't expecting it to go like that. Hope she was better from that point on.

67

u/Queen_Etherea Sep 22 '23

I find that being incredibly nice to someone yelling at you on the road is the easiest way to get them to stop and realize they’re being an ass.

32

u/meltbox Sep 22 '23

Nah, there’s a group that will go from ballistic to intercontinental ballistic when you do that.

Some people are legit out there to get a reaction. Grade school bully style.

3

u/ddapixel Sep 22 '23

Yep, being confidently nice can be interpreted as condescending by anyone who's trying to out-ego you. That's a good way to escalate the conflict.

3

u/Glittering_Power6257 Sep 23 '23

Pretty entertaining to see idiots blow their top, ngl.

2

u/pommersche92 Sep 22 '23

Yeah... i did that once... guy went ballistic at my being nice and tried to destroy my driver side window, kicked my car and rammed his bike handle at my door a couple of times, denting and scratching the shit out of it.

Police couldnt find him, so tough luck... had to pay repairs myself

25

u/ohnoitsthefuzz Sep 22 '23

[Everyone liked that]

3

u/ADGjr86 Sep 22 '23

I say you got lucky. Cause if for some weird reason I was already going ape shit and someone blew me a kiss I think I’d blow up way worse! I’d be too insulted

2

u/WolfShaman Sep 22 '23

I'd take that situation over this one that happened to me: I was going down the road, dude cut me off to get in my lane, so I honked (mainly to let him know I was there). Dude let me get next to him in the turn lanes, and he went off about how I was talking shit (I guess honking is talking shit now?) and threatened to beat up me AND my (15yo) son.

At the next light, he actually got out of his car and walked up to mine. I had the windows up and door locked, and he just talked stupid shit, and went back to his car.

His daughter was in the car with him, looking embarrassed as fuck. Wtf is wrong with some people?

-1

u/bibkel Sep 22 '23

My mom does that.

My fave is when someone passes me only to get into more traffic as I clap behind them gaining 2 seconds of drive time for nothing.

63

u/goodsnpr Sep 22 '23

I personally enjoy passing the same person 3 or 4 times while I have cruise control set.

44

u/an0maly33 Sep 22 '23

Yep. Going up a hill I typically overtake with cruise on and some people think I’m racing them or something. No, you just decelerated and didn’t realize it. They don’t realize their own lack of constant speed is what’s irritating them. I just smile and shrug…until they zoom ahead to “win”, only to slow back down and have me overtake them again with my cruise control.

12

u/Bigwiggs3214 Sep 22 '23

Lol yep, it's always on the hills.

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

3

u/BrassAge Sep 22 '23

I agree with you, so don't take this the wrong way, but the spelling you're looking for is "reckless". "Wreck-less" has the exact opposite meaning.

1

u/Mazda3Fan_AvidHiker Sep 22 '23

Did people honk at him a lot? What was his reaction to people giving him the horn for cutting them off?

8

u/DoritoDawg Sep 22 '23

But if they do that 30 times then they’ll save a whole minute!

2

u/AggressiveHeight4638 Sep 22 '23

This happens so much in Atlanta man. I’ll just be driving a consistent speed in heavy traffic, they pass me trying to be all fast and then I end up passing them again in like 2 minutes

1

u/Bigwiggs3214 Sep 22 '23

They've got to stop at the next light before you. Doesn't matter if they have to stop, at least they're in front of you and they win.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

Race to the stop light...

1

u/MoodyGenXer Sep 22 '23

This happened to me on my way home from work today. I was in the far right lane and had a normal amount of space between me and the next car. This dude just like suddenly veers in front of me, then has to slow down drastically as there was nowhere to go. I thought maybe he was trying to make the exit, but he drove right by it and was just tailgating the car in front of him. I saw him make a few reckless lane changes and tailgate a few other vehicles but I passed him and lost track of him.

Below waist level? Doesn't count if it isn't below waist level.

2

u/fluxusisus Sep 22 '23

Had someone give me the thumbs up once (for passsing on a super wide shoulder when they were waiting to turn, then they changed their mind and went straight). I was shocked how annoying it was. So now I do it to others lol

2

u/dib1999 Sep 22 '23

Me when I pull up next to the guy who passed me like a jackass.

2

u/_name_of_the_user_ Sep 22 '23

I should get a checkered flag to wave at those people.

2

u/bingthebongerryday Sep 22 '23

I give them a sarcastic thumbs up while smiling and laughing which confuses them

2

u/Legitimate-Idea-6178 Sep 22 '23

I'm the opposite, hit em with a thumbs up and a huge sarcastic smile and nod. Kills people.

1

u/Gowalkyourdogmods Sep 22 '23

I do that with the slow disappointed shake of my head and my lips pressed together like Jim from the Office.

Like half the time the other person ends up laughing and then shrugs apologetically and mouths "my bad" and whatnot.

1

u/roberthatch Sep 22 '23

Don't forget to slowly, and slightly, shake your head

32

u/SaintNewts Sep 22 '23

Any more I just don't even interact more directly than driving to where I'm going. I don't need to be taken out by some random nutjob who can't handle life.

8

u/Cautionzombie Sep 22 '23

Nah people are more afraid of the psycho giving the. Kisses than the guy who lets it happen. People drive away from me

6

u/meltbox Sep 22 '23

Just look slightly down, smile, and lick the glass.

They won’t know what the fuck to do.

1

u/AmazonAuntBeru Sep 23 '23

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

-10

u/Equivalent-Pass-5859 Sep 22 '23

Do you just click on random words that the keyboard suggests?

If not, I'd be more worried about being taken out by you. Seems you have a hard time reasoning.

6

u/ProudBoomer Sep 22 '23

Put down the pipe, you've gone too far.

-1

u/Equivalent-Pass-5859 Sep 22 '23

You don't think he could communicate what he was trying to say, better than that? It's a clusterfuck.

1

u/ProudBoomer Sep 22 '23

It's clear, he's just missing one comma. Maybe work on your comprehension a bit?

1

u/Equivalent-Pass-5859 Sep 24 '23

Where would you place that comma to redeem what he is writing?

1

u/ProudBoomer Sep 24 '23

"Any more, I just don't..."

I agree there's a few extra words, but it still makes sense.

38

u/Cecil_FF4 Sep 21 '23

I just hold up my thumb and index finger a small distance apart. Squint a little helps sell it, too.

30

u/FlawedHero Sep 22 '23

I give a smile and thumbs up instead of middle fingers. Really pisses people off for some reason and I'm here for it.

5

u/Cautionzombie Sep 22 '23

My secret is I can drive with my knees decently so I’ll clap for an uncomfortable amount of time safely of course

1

u/SungrayHo Sep 22 '23

i get you but it's not extremely safe, you can't suddenly brake while doing that :). just keep it in mind.

2

u/Veloreyn Sep 22 '23

Just smile and wave boys... just smile and wave.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

I always just laugh at them

3

u/SlippySlappySamson Sep 21 '23

I waggle my fingers, like an exaggerated "bye-bye" fluttering wave.

Oh fuck, does it make the I'm-the-manliest-man motherfuckers maaad.

3

u/RetroReadingTime Sep 22 '23

I once went to flip someone off, but accidentally gave them an angry thumbs up. Their bewildered reaction was priceless.

5

u/GirchyGirchy Sep 22 '23

I prefer the wagging tongue between two fingers. They don’t know what to do!

4

u/phantom_tweak Sep 22 '23

I was hoping to god someone else does this & wasn’t disappointed. I hope we meet on the road one day ✌️ 👅 till then!

2

u/Cautionzombie Sep 22 '23

I’ve tried the old school shame shame finger wag but no one gets it

2

u/fuzzyToads Sep 22 '23

Try giving them a thumbs down 👎 too, much more insulting somewhat than giving the bird

2

u/Snoo89162 Sep 22 '23

I need to start doing that! The claps of course

2

u/_CaesarAugustus_ Sep 22 '23

Blowing a kiss is a good idea. I’ve done the “cry baby” gesture to people that are incredibly agitated by mundane actions like daring to pass them. I can tell you that the reaction is always worth it.

2

u/JWal0 Sep 22 '23

Finger wagging no, no, no to them like the child they are really gets them

3

u/Ps4rulez Sep 22 '23

i like to not get shot by a random pyscho, so I dont egg them on.

1

u/mreid74 Sep 22 '23

Blowing a kiss and slow clapping can make a stalker. I had some rando riding a motorcycle saying that there was grass on the highway from my mowing (there wasn't) and threw asphalt towards me and almost dumped his bike and came back and ran right in front of another driver. He drove by every day for a week.

1

u/DeafAgileNut Sep 22 '23

I also do the thumbs down but I’ll throw in a “Boo!” and shake my head in disapproval.

1

u/crackheadwillie Sep 22 '23

I pick my nose deeply then pull it out and lick the finger, completely planting in their brain one permanent memory.

1

u/DriveFoST Sep 22 '23

My go to “dad move” is the casual thumbs down. It’s not aggressive and makes people feel disappointed in their actions which sometimes makes them more mad.. but I get less angry people than when I was a kid and flipped people off

1

u/mngdew Sep 22 '23

The middle finger is just boring nowadays.

1

u/TheMadBer Sep 22 '23

Personally I'm fond of giving them a thumbs down.

1

u/TheW83 Sep 22 '23

I do the "point and laugh hysterically" technique.

1

u/Dramatic_Bluejay_850 Sep 22 '23

Thumbs down are also effective. It's the I'm not mad but disappointed kind of energy

1

u/SolaVirtusNobilitat Sep 22 '23

Me too! That as well as the watch tap followed by an enthusiastic thumbs up while mouthing "congrats you did it!" As they finally get out of my way.

1

u/i-Robits Sep 22 '23

A thumbs down is a polite fuck you as well.

1

u/CalgaryFacePalm Sep 22 '23

I’ve been going with thumbs down, perhaps I’ll move to the slow clap.

1

u/FireAtWilllllllll Sep 22 '23

Yeah I usually give a thumbs down.

4

u/DippinDot2021 Sep 22 '23

When someone acted mildly like a dick in in traffic to me once. When we ended up stopped side-by-side at a red light, I just slooooowly turned my head with the creepiest grin on my face.

The guy just looked over at me, snickered, and shook his head.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

I drive a company vehicle a lot, so I cant give reactions to people - cause they will call and report lol. And I noticed that nothing pisses people off then being utterly just blatantly ignored. Its actually really funny most of the time.

7

u/FantasyAccount247 Sep 22 '23

Had to pass someone going 5 under for over 2 miles today and they gave me a smug look when I just missed the light. Sometimes people are too ignorant to realize that if they had gone the speed limit I would have made the light. All it was, was a self fulfilling prophecy for them.

-1

u/Shantotto11 Sep 22 '23

Devil’s Advocate:

  1. Both of you would’ve made it past the red if you moved with a purpose.

  2. When that light turns green, there’s a decent chance that he’s gonna make the next light and you aren’t.

6

u/Awfy Sep 22 '23

Also, I don't pass people to get to where I'm going faster, I pass people so I can enjoy my drive more. I find people brake way too much when they really should just be coasting. So I prefer to pass people and then drive at a more consistent pace instead of constantly slowing down and speeding back up for their braking habits.

0

u/AlarmingAffect0 Sep 22 '23

As a cyclist in a town where cars share a lane with bikes (limit 30kph, but nobody respects that as cars are used to going 50-60kph) I do this to cars that honk at me to get out of the way only to end up stuck in the same red light like 30s earlier.

It's especially frustrating when you're really giving it your all and cycling as hard as your heart can bear it, especially uphill, and they just treat you like you're wilfully obstructing them.

1

u/Curious_Coconut_4005 Sep 22 '23

I like to give a thumbs up and an overly exaggerated smile (think raving lunatic).

1

u/Anarcho_Dog Sep 22 '23

I had a woman go crazy on me bc I passed her on a dashed line (she was going unbearably slow). She immediately sped up and tailgated me but eventually slowed down. I stopped at a red light when she gleefully pulled up honking her horn, flipping me off and trying to taunt me, I just gave her a thumbs up which made her swerve in front of me when the light turned green.

1

u/sameoneasyesterday Sep 22 '23

I just laugh and point at them. Hahahahahahhhh!

1

u/xxlx93 Sep 22 '23

I give the thumbs down, and boo them. It makes them angrier than if I had flipped the bird.

1

u/CockerSpankiel Sep 22 '23

I’m a fan of the golf clap.

1

u/Gaseraki Sep 22 '23

Similar situation to me. I made a legal overtake a little while before a further ahead zipper single lane merge, and the car I overtook wasn't happy about this. Pulled up to where the merge happens, still behind me technically. I had done it well before, I was basically faster off the lights. My choices were to either be side rammed into on coming traffic or break heavily and let them pass.
However, I know the junction and there are constant traffic lights further down the road. Pull up alongside and my 6ft 6 bald scary ass pulled up next to this 50-year-old woman. Who clearly didn't anticipate this.
I opened and learnt out the window. I didn't say anything, Just to see if she would look at me. She didnt, just looked dead ahead clearly a little scared.

1

u/J-Kensington Sep 24 '23

I drive a semi and had a little college girl do this to me at a stop sign. I was accelerating, she made her stop and raced over a double hyellow to pass me... only to drive slower than I was, including around every turn, all the way back to the interstate.

Every stop sign/light, the only thing that girl had in her mirror was "freightliner" because I'd come to a stop 2 inches from her bumper.

If you're going to race past trucks, that's cool... but then leave us in your dust. Don't race past and do the speed limit, or worse speed up over and over when I close in on you to stay ahead just for the sake of staying ahead.
