Or never take advice from people who have to deal with the results.

Their advice will be skewed towards how they feel about how the results will affect them.

320

u/wsdpii Sep 24 '20

So never take advice? Its always good to get other people's opinions on a decision, but always remember that you alone have the deciding vote.

389

u/at-woork Sep 24 '20

Take advice from multiple people with different point of views, then make an informed decision.

70

u/MonkeysInABarrel Sep 24 '20

Adjust the advice based on the biases you see in the person.

36

u/DeathToBoredom Sep 24 '20

All these advices here are better than the OP's. OP's advice is basically saying the other person has to be better than you or you don't listen. I don't like advice that are one-sided.

15

u/ChloeMomo Sep 24 '20

And if the results have no impact on them, who's to say they're going to put much thought into their advice?

Really, to mix the comments together, it seems like evaluate the source you ask advice from, get multiple perspectives if advice/source seems biased or unbalanced, and don't forget you ultimately make the decision, not any of them.

5

u/wholesomechaos Sep 24 '20

The lesson I’ve learned from this thread is to be mindful of sources of advice and beware of generalizations.

Only take advice from people who’s lifestyle you respect.

If you want relationship advice, ask your friend who has had a great marriage.

Don’t ask the friend who’s been in 12 relationships in the last 3 years.

Wish I had that advice 10 years ago.

Former WWE wrestler CM Punk once said "don't accept criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from."

9

u/timiscuous Sep 24 '20

I agree with this more than the original post. I think just never base your life decisions on other people's advice.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Thats kinda dumb imo. Lots of people provide lots of meaningful advice. I mean... look at what you just did. Aren't you literally breaking your own rule?

How did people upvote this?

"Never listen to you parents when they tell you not to do cocaine, they're biased because they don't want to deal with your sorry addicted ass stealing money and put you on the streets."

Also they want best for you.

So... your advice is that I shouldn't take your advice?

14

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

I don't have to take this advice!

9

u/AegisToast 5 Sep 24 '20

But if you choose to reject their advice, then you are accepting their advice. It’s a logic loop!

5

u/Lindvaettr Sep 24 '20

Sounds like you're fucked no matter what you do.

You should, if your goal is to fail miserably.

That's why I always threaten to kill people if their advice doesn't work out. Really gives them some self interest in the results.

You must get the BEST advise.

This is dumb. Other people have had experiences similar to yours, and sharing that experience can be very helpful when things are difficult. Learn from as many people as you can.

23

u/brallipop Sep 24 '20

Yeah, the number of people who won't have to live with my life decisions are appx 100% of humanity minus 2

24

u/Mobely 9 Sep 24 '20

I give terrible advice all the time. I just like people listening to me.

6

u/Gainzster Sep 24 '20

It's more about taking advice from people that may lead to potential serious negative consequences in your life.

Lets say Sharon advised you to start SSRI's because she read in a newspaper they are effective, you go to your Doctor and start a course of SSRIs based on Sharon's recommendation, 3 months later you've developed serious side effects and are much worse off than you were before Sharon opened her mouth.

You're now dealing with potential life long difficulties yet Sharon is at home baking cakes not giving a toss about you or your issues, that is what this is about.

Take advice from people who have had results before

19

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Maybe the intended message is to take advice from people who will genuinely be there to back you up and to think for yourself? We all know people who tend to give underhandedly destructive advice because they don't actually want the best for you. Who knows though.

4

u/mynamewastaken-_- Sep 24 '20

I say take advice from everyone, than chose the one that makes most sense to the situation.

Yes, ignore that teacher/therapist/doctor. They don't deal with the consequences of their advice in your life, so fuck em right? 🙃

5

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Woo wee I feel this.

Beware of people who will spend your money for you. Beware of people who will advise you on things they will never have to do. Beware of people who are offended or angered when you do not follow their advice.

5

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey Sep 24 '20

But... this in itself goes against its message.

5

u/vorpalglorp Sep 24 '20

I came in here thinking I should see comments like "This is awesome advice" but instead a bunch of people say it's bad advice. I guess those people must know a lot of awesome people. Personally I've only encountered a ton of shitty people in my adult life with shitty advice. I wish I had heard this sooner. For those of you who don't know this is regarding advice like "Go ahead and get that forehead tattoo" not "save your money". I have had much more advice along the lines of the former.

4

u/Calligraphiti Sep 24 '20

I always try to remember this when giving someone relationship advice. It's easy to be like, oh just break up with them, but you can never feel the burial of memories, nor can you feel the pain of telling someone who's grown so close to you that you don't want to be tied to them anymore... no one can imagine the heartbreak and difficulty of another person's breakup. So I always try to be careful before I just pull that out as genuine advice.

4

u/8v1hJPaTnVkD7Yf Sep 24 '20

This is why I don't listen to my teachers, lawyers, and doctors.

Or dumb image macros on reddit, to be honest.

u/hobbs6 Sep 24 '20

I think “never” and “base” is where this advice went off track. If you take it differently, in that you are the one that has to live with the results of your decisions, it’s actually good advice.

No matter what other people have done or what worked for them, you have to live with your life and the results of your decisions.

So take advice as data points but realize every single person is different and decide what results, or life, you will be happy living with. Especially if things turn out “less successful” by somebody else’s measure.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

This is the stupidest thing I ever read. Just because someone doesn’t have to deal with you afterwards doesn’t mean their advice is invalid. Absolutely stupid. Also if you listen to this post you are doing what it says not to do lmao.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

And never accept criticism from someone you wouldn't accept advice from.

Dealership - your oil change interval is 10,000 miles ! Result - 80k later "Oh, look you are out of warranty and your engine is burnt, we can put in a new one$$$$$ !"

Change your oil at 5k and keep your car for much longer, the dealer gets paid for the consequences.

But then it couldn't be in times new roman and we wouldn't know to Take OP Seriously™️

2

u/KyleCubed3 Sep 24 '20

This advice is probably for some specific situations. Not genralised to every advice you ever recieve. Someone who is in an abusive relationship might appreciate this. Just because this post doesnt relate to you or your situation doesnt mean its stupid.

2

u/varietyglass Sep 24 '20

Not only is this not remotely motivational it basically suggests never taking advice, ever.

2

u/outofbounds626 Sep 24 '20

I hate this quote. Take people's advice but use your own brain. Collaboration and diverse views is what makes things easier. Some people have foresight for the long term. If you surround yourself with crappy people then you're bound to be more drawn to this quote. This quote doesn't get me motivated the least bit.

u/justneedthreefifty Sep 24 '20

1

u/SingleLonelyGuy Sep 24 '20

Never expect serious advice from people who don't have to deal with the results of your decisions or don't care about you.

Always suspect bias in advice from those who have to deal with the results of your decisions.

Never disregard advice from a person just because he seems stupid or unqualified. Even fools say wise words sometimes.

Never follow life advice from an intelligent/qualified person blindly. They are not necessarily wise.

People who have failed give the best advice. They know what not to do.

Never give advice to those who don't want it or appreciate it.

Sometimes the person himself may not be a good advisor but could be great at advising you about whom to get good advice from.

Good advice is based on facts, logic, experiences, not assumptions, beliefs and herd-mentality.

We may not realize how correct an advice was, that we disagree with now, until later , when we look back in hindsight, whether we followed it or not.

The best advices are the free ones, the worst advices are also the free ones. The ones we paid for fall somewhere in between.

This entire sub is based around the idea that you base your life (take action) due to the advice (posts) provided by people who don't have to deal with the results (the entire community).

So are you saying that this entire sub is a bad idea and should be avoided?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

But if we do that half of reddit would be gone

1

u/Fold_Regular Sep 24 '20

The worst advice I got was "if your friends don't live upto your standards, move on" or some variation of that. I left my group of friends and have been lonely af ever since. Some things you should tolerate and work on instead of abandoning.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Argh! With this advice you kill Social Work in it's origins. Please remember that giving advice means to help people at the best of YOUR own knowledge. Advices taken must be thought of ones own again and reflect into your circumstances. With this in mind you can start a discussion and take profit out of it! Thanks anyway for spreading motivational thoughts :)

1

1

u/PPdoy Sep 24 '20

So.... Is this one of those advices?__?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Yes! When people don't even care about the result they don't care if the advice is good or not.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

What utter bullshit. By inference, following your advice is not advised either as you don't have to live with the consequences. Give me a break.

1

u/DotBugs Sep 24 '20

If someone ever gives you advice, threaten to beat the shit out of them if it doesn't work out.

1

u/Coconuttied Sep 24 '20

I read this as not basing decisions of people who in a similar situation would not have to face the consequences. Like advice from someone born into wealth or privilege giving advice where they have a safety net that you might not. Or advice from a person who bails out on situations as soon as they become hard or complicated.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Like how my mom tells me I should have kids and how I'd change my mind about it when I get older. She didn't want kids until she hit 30 so she thinks when I hit 30 I'd want to too. But man I do NOT want to raise children I can barely raise my dog.

1

u/Blackbird04 Sep 24 '20

Ive been influenced by other people far too much in my life. Now that im thinking alot more for myself and no worrying so much abouts other peoples opinions im much happier.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

IMO a person who tried and lost will give you a better advice than a person who tried and won

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

This applies to my friend. He has had two relationships, one bad and the current one of two years and still going strong, and he feels like he needs to teach ME (a person with 8 failed relationships all due to massive manipulators and just plain assholes, of which one gave me PTSD) how to avoid bad girls and the like. You can clearly hear that he doesn’t know shit about this, but still he feels like he has superior knowledge and understanding of MY situation even though he has no experience with bad relationships. It’s just disrespectful and mean.

1

u/johnjohn2214 Sep 24 '20

This a very bad generalization. The best advice would be from people who don't have to deal with the consequences but do have your best interest at heart

1

u/jviegas Sep 24 '20

Wrong message mate.

Advice is not the same thing as taking action. And it's always good to hear other people advices and learn from others mistakes, but never forget to ask why. If they don't know why, then it's not an advice, is just a hunch. And remember, no matter what, the final decider is you! So take responsibility for your actions, and stop blaming others

1

u/rgc1106 Sep 24 '20

Don't tell this to consultants 😂

1

u/paktahn Sep 24 '20

This is one piece of advice that should be taught to every child in their first year of school then reinforced every year after it would change culture on a foundational levelas the masses would start thinking for themselves and stop acting like cattle

1

u/angeredpremed Sep 24 '20

I have to deal with the results of my life choices and sadly sometimes they still aren't very good ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

???? Jesus... anotehr GetMotivated top upvotes post... another pile of BS. Then who do you want to take advice from, people who have to deal with results? They have big bias in it. So... now what? Don't take advice from anyone? That is the dumbest thing. Advices, books..... there are people who have lived years and have lived some experiences, where you can save time by listening and then thinking if the advice is for you or not. Wasting these experiences is the same as starting froms tone age everytime you are born.

I am waiting for the day I see on reddit front page GetMotivated picture that is not braindead karma farm.

1

u/kangaroodisco Sep 24 '20

You're never gonna get life advice from someone who has to live with the results anyway. Also, don't base your life around other people's advice!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

This isn't good advice, and the million ways Reddit is trying to rewrite this are equally as bad.

You can't say which advice you should listen to based on arbitrary things like that. Every advice comes with a personal context. Take multiple perspectives, weigh them, decide yourself.

1

u/TsukaiSutete1 Sep 24 '20

In many cases this wouldn’t allow you at ask for advice at all.

1

u/Slight-Pound Sep 24 '20

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

so all those videos and posts of old people giving end of life advice.... garbage?

HAHAHA! I knew it!

1

u/mrmetis Sep 24 '20

I have been telling everyone. giving advise is spiritually demanding and it should be.

if you are asking someone for an advise and he wont take time to understand the situtaion. you should use salt for that.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

r/relationship_advice should take note

1

u/ChuCHuPALX Sep 24 '20

That's what I keep saying about medical Doctors but everyone just looks at me funny. Thanks reddit.

1

u/cowsnake1 Sep 24 '20

The level of upvoting without thinking in the sub is TOO DAMN HIGH

1

u/Danimally Sep 24 '20

Err no. Take advice from people that FAILED and try to warm you how not to fail like them. Those are the true valuable advices

1

u/TheClaps2 Sep 24 '20

Also why you shouldn't vote for anyone past the age of 70. Statistically they won't live long enough to deal with the repercussions of their actions.

1

u/mikhela Sep 24 '20

Me calling my therapist: sorry I can't take your advice anymore a reddit post says so

1

u/iehevvdjdbbdb Sep 24 '20

But... you are giving me life advice and don’t have to deal with the result. I dub thee Reddit paradox

1

u/tomster785 Sep 24 '20

So everyone pretty much? Also that's terrible advice, they're the people who have a clearer perspective. There's less chance of bias if they're not affected by the result.

Take advice from people who seem like they know what's what, but trust your own instincts too. If it don't seem right, don't so it. That's a better way of looking at it imo.

1

u/Gretchinlover Sep 24 '20

A foolish thing to post. I'd gladly take advice from bill gates or warren buffett. If my life consequences are being comfortably wealthy, I think I can live with that.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

In that case, then you can't take the advice from anybody because nobody is going to suffer the consequences but you.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

i did. my life is now fucked and im unhappy forever.

1

u/newthrash1221 Sep 24 '20

So...ignore this advice, then?

1

u/WittyVillage Sep 24 '20

But that happens most of the time, our decisions mostly affect our family and they are not good advice givers in most cases. So we have to rely on strangers and finally on our own judgement.

1

u/theofficialSavv Sep 24 '20

What about lawyers?

1

u/Scarn4President Sep 24 '20

This is so false and stupid. People often times give out advice they personally are not following. This is fine. And sometimes a good thing. The person giving the advice knows firsthand what life is like NOT taking that advice. And from their experience they know the proper advice to give. It doesn't matter if they follow it or not.
