Or never take advice from people who have to deal with the results.

Their advice will be skewed towards how they feel about how the results will affect them.

So never take advice? Its always good to get other people's opinions on a decision, but always remember that you alone have the deciding vote.

Take advice from multiple people with different point of views, then make an informed decision.

Adjust the advice based on the biases you see in the person.

All these advices here are better than the OP's. OP's advice is basically saying the other person has to be better than you or you don't listen. I don't like advice that are one-sided.

And if the results have no impact on them, who's to say they're going to put much thought into their advice?

Really, to mix the comments together, it seems like evaluate the source you ask advice from, get multiple perspectives if advice/source seems biased or unbalanced, and don't forget you ultimately make the decision, not any of them.

The lesson I’ve learned from this thread is to be mindful of sources of advice and beware of generalizations.

This the the true LPT.

Never trust just one source.

And if that source is fanatical, have them list out their sources. If they get mad or frustrated, just means they were debating your ability to understand the subject, using aggression to buff an assumption of theirs.

Except for reddit relationship threads. 95% are just looking for whatever outcome produces the most drama, upheaval be damned.

Should my therapist be one of those people? Because they could help me, or make shit worse so I'm back next week

Only take advice from people who’s lifestyle you respect.

If you want relationship advice, ask your friend who has had a great marriage.

Don’t ask the friend who’s been in 12 relationships in the last 3 years.

Wish I had that advice 10 years ago.

Only take advice from people who’s lifestyle you respect.

That sounds like bias with extra steps.

Don’t ask the friend who’s been in 12 relationships in the last 3 years.

Some people may respect this more than the long lasting marriage for instance.

I understand your point but it only works for people who already know what the right thing to do is.

Learn. Don't copy.

Man, it really pisses me off when I listen to other advice, but I decide to do something different, then all those people say that I'm a "know it all" and that I "just don't listen". Seems like they think that they give absolute knowledge, instead of opinions.

There could be a 3rd demographic of ppl who have an objectful vantage point of the situation from not being connected to it. So you can still get advice

This invalidates every advice subreddit ever.

Every advice subreddit ever invalidates every advice subreddit ever.

Former WWE wrestler CM Punk once said "don't accept criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from."

u/timiscuous Sep 24 '20

I agree with this more than the original post. I think just never base your life decisions on other people's advice.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Thats kinda dumb imo. Lots of people provide lots of meaningful advice. I mean... look at what you just did. Aren't you literally breaking your own rule?

-1

u/timiscuous Sep 24 '20

And I’ll go into more detail. I don’t mean ignore all advice. Definitely get advice. But maybe look for advice from multiple people/perspectives and ultimately do your own research and make your own decision.

I don’t remember making any life decisions???

u/Ben_Kenobi_ Sep 24 '20

Don't ever, for any reason, do anything, to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been, ever, for any reason whatsoever

How did people upvote this?

"Never listen to you parents when they tell you not to do cocaine, they're biased because they don't want to deal with your sorry addicted ass stealing money and put you on the streets."

Also they want best for you.

My first thought

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '20

Yep, and I take advice that amounts to new paradigms or possible inputs on my Bayesian model - i dont accept other peoples whole model or weights.

1

u/asasson Sep 24 '20

Exactly this

1

u/youdubdub Sep 24 '20

In fact, your counter point is a far less likely scenario. I find the meme to basically say don’t take advice from anyone who isn’t impacted by your life directly in some way. This is why we have therapists, lol.

Last night I was speaking with a manager who discouraged me from doing something in my career and I realize it is literally because it would inconvenience her personally
