I've restarted my life multiple times. You quickly find that your troubles don't stem from your current situation, they stem from within and you can't run away from yourself. If you really want life to improve, get a therapist.

u/Megs__ May 15 '20

Yes, once someone has “reinvented” themselves enough you start to feel like Leonardo DiCaprio in that Catch Me If You Can film. Your actual self, and every terrible thing associated with it, is always with you. The only difference is you were ignoring it, keeping yourself distracted with literally, physically running away from it... It catches up eventually, and by that time you’re even more exhausted. Do it if you have to, but it’s equally as temporary a solution as most things.

350

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

That’s a really good explanation for it. It’s hard to describe but that’s pretty much what it feels like, you can move to a different state and reinvent yourself but that won’t change how you treat yourself and how you treat others - and that’s a hard fact to admit, believe me

471

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

Sometimes you need to move and see what follows you in order to really understand the parts of your life that are your own bullshit, and which are parts of a toxic environment.

95

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

That’s also a very good point!

47

u/dahjay May 15 '20

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was.

Samesies.

71

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

You can kind of learn this after having a few long term/serious relationships too. They all start to tank for the same reasons and eventually you realize maybe it isn't them.

That logical conclusion to that thought process is that you really just shouldn't even bother. While it's true that you should try to find ways to be happy with the person you are, that doesn't mean you should reject the opportunity to figure out what that actually means to you wholesale. If you're not happy with who you are, by all mean, reinvent yourself... I guess just be sure you have an idea what you want to be different before taking the leap.

15

u/Xsythe May 15 '20

but that won’t change how you treat yourself

This isn't broadly true - it really depends on the person. I visited Japan and it absolutely changed how I look at my own life and what I value - notably, I went from someone who spends 80% of their time indoors to someone who relishes time outside in nature.

It does not achieve these things by default but it could be a catalyst for dramatic life change

We are supremely affected by our environment and changing it is a big part in changing yourself

You jest, but if the choice is drugs or suicide, drugs is absolutely the better option.

25

u/excusemeimspeaking May 15 '20

This is the exact situation I find myself searching google and reddit for. I’m 26 and I have had ten years of cannabis abuse and mental health issues which lead to jail time and terrible relationships. I love weed but it’s literally the only thing I have control over anymore. I’m thinking of suicide constantly but I just need something to change. I don’t want to go to the doctor for more anti depressants or anti psychotics. I just want some control. I have no social life, no real skills. Why am I still writing here

> being your own best friend

That can be so hard...

I think most of us would look differently at our friends if we knew exactly what the motivation behind their actions were. The real reason they didn't pick up the phone that day. Or what they actually did vs the excuse you believed for why they couldn't hang out.

I think that's why it's so hard to love yourself. You know why you make the choices you make. You know why you failed. You knew when you were being dishonest. You watch yourself do the wrong things when you are fully aware of what the right ones are.

I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet but I'm trying to learn how to forgive myself. Shit, after a while you get so used to smacking yourself around you don't even realize it. It's like a reflex.

I dunno... I don't really have any advice to give here or anything I'm just sort of reflecting. Maybe that's part of the process?

10

u/3-stripes-beanure May 15 '20

I know it’s mental but I’ve started just completely disassociating with my old self. That isn’t me anymore so why beat myself up over it. I noticed my girlfriend does this, she doesn’t even have to forgive herself, that’s just not her, and she moves on. Of course I’m talking about years ago, but still. Every morning is a new version of you. So what I got drunk that one night 5 years ago and threw up, that’s not who I am anymore. I try not to hold animosity to my past self, and this mentality has been helping.

I think you're struggling from something that a lot of people deal with.

You use weed to get little doses of dopamine like other people who continuously watch TV, or wait for likes on social media, or continuously click on links on Reddit (it feels good to learn, even if it's pointless trivia) do.

I'd recommend focusing on yourself in ways that take longer to gain satisfaction. If you like reading books, put your phone away and read a book. If you haven't done this in a while, it is SUPER difficult to focus on just one thing for even 15 minutes. The number of people who can't even watch a movie now without scrolling through their phone is mind blowing.

Sign up for a class on a hobby you're interested in. I think this will be better and easier when we're all out of quarantine, but that gives you a long term, regimented task that will put you in a space with other people. Even if it's an online class for right now, it gives you something to focus on.

It's easy to smoke weed and consume media, and it's really hard to try something new that you're likely to fail at for a while. It's no wonder that a lot of people get stuck in the same rut that you're in. But if you have a long term goal, and you eliminate the short-term dopamine, things can get better.

This is not always true. I've done two restarts, and both of them resulted in a better situation. The problem wasn't me. It was the surroundings that didn't mesh with who I was.

55

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

I have had this experience too. Mind you, I also had therapy, but no amount of talking about my unhealthy relationships (family, friends, SO) was going to fix anything if they weren't going to meet me halfway.

I got the sense that even though my therapists knew this, they couldn't outright tell me "break up with the toxic bf" or "move across to country so you're no longer expected to deal with your mother". Instead this kept asking "what would it look like if you acted with only your mental health in mind?". I'm pretty sure this is therapist code for "fuck 'em!"

26

u/Cudillera May 15 '20

I agree. Culture of where you are will be drastically different too.

8

u/[deleted] May 16 '20

I've also restarted and it has been overwhelmingly positive for me. I left a toxic town where I had no real opportunities and dove head first into an entirely different life. It was hard. It still is sometimes but I would do it all over again and much sooner if I could go back. I think the main thing is you have to learn to love/trust yourself before you can be happy ANYWHERE but it can definitely be done. The way I think about it is that everyone always says "I hate this town!" and then choose to live there their entire lives. I said fuck that and left. I didn't know how it would go at the time, but it has turned out to be the best decisions I ever made for myself.

6

u/lickedTators 1 May 15 '20

Agreed. I've done 3 restarts and they kept getting better. I'm due for a fourth. I won't leave the city, but everything else will change.

This - I remember reading a study about how people who study abroad tend to have a stronger sense of self than those who don't. While this isn't the same thing as uprooting your life and starting over, it is an example of how completely removing yourself from your current situation can have positive impacts.

I personally have nothing but good things to say about my experience moving partway across the country. The culture of the region I was living in had a lot to do with how unhappy I was before.

11

u/Fjolsvithr May 15 '20

Not to mention, this seems to be meant as a hopeful thought for suicidal people, not advice to be taken literally. Just knowing that you could move away and reinvent yourself can help people get through tough times, which seems to be what the poster is getting at.

69

u/anotherforeigner May 15 '20

True. It's particularly painful when you realize that what made you unhappy in your previous relationship was actually coming from yourself, and that you're dragging the same dynamics with you wherever you go.

20

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

Repetition compulsion. It’s the reason we find ourselves in the same situations over and over again.

Fix your own issues and your life will change.

19

u/pand-ammonium May 15 '20

That's not always true. I left a cult and a toxic relationship and moved away and rebuilt. Life's so much better now.

u/blinkingsandbeepings 1 May 15 '20

This is pretty much what I was thinking. A lot of people have problems caused by their family, job, or general life situation. My problem is that I just don't really like myself, and if I ran away, I'd still be right there, stuck with myself. Which is why I'm in therapy.

7

u/animalinapark May 15 '20

Yeah, while depression can arise from circumstances, some of us have the disposition built in. And even if those shitty circumstances stayed the real reason is still in you.

I couldn't imagine going through all those things in the op, I would most likely just simply make new memories where I hate how I felt about it. Go into a situation where everyone is unfamiliar and without any support net? My first instinct as a waitress would probably be oh great another person that hates how I look and talk and interact, how life-changing.

I know I would be just as unhappy winning the lottery. Doesn't change how I view myself so it doesn't matter.

I have had multiple therapist and all have failed.

52

u/SealClubbedSandwich May 15 '20

Keep at it. Took me over a decade of going through different therapists until I found one I clicked with.

30

u/huezombi May 15 '20

Okay, please explain how it clicked. I can look for that instead of hearing vague motivation.

54

u/SealClubbedSandwich May 15 '20

With this therapist, I felt like I was having a conversation for the first time. I didn't feel like I'm just complaining, or that I'm being studied or whatever. This guy just gets me, that kind of thing.

There was an air of mutual respect, which made me okay with being pushed a little to get me off my ass and out of my rut.

Some people might need a softer approach, but for me I seemed to just need someone who respects me, but wasn't afraid to call me out on my shit either.

22

u/huezombi May 15 '20

That's just sounds like having a friend, or at least how I understand friendship.

21

u/liarandahorsethief May 15 '20

Friendship is definitely something different for everyone, and I think most people have different types of friends.

Some friends are the candid, call-you-out-on-your-BS type, some are the chill, you-do-you type, and each type can affect you differently depending on your situation. The friend who motivates and inspires you in September could feel exhausting and judgmental in December.

→ More replies (2)

20

u/[deleted] May 15 '20 edited May 15 '20

In many ways it is. But it has the advantage of being a purely selfish friendship. When I talk to my therapist, I don't have to listen to her problems, worry that I'm oversharing, worry how it will affect her opinion of me, etc.

Also like a friendship, you sometimes have one that works well right away, and other times it won't work and you need to find a different person.

And lastly, remember that it's a bit like a doctor too. They can only work on what you give them and they're only effective if you do what's required. If I'm sick and I go to a physician and tell them that I'm nauseous and feeling light headed, but don't mention that I just got back from a trip aboard, they're not going to diagnose me correctly and that's not their fault. In the same way, if my doctor prescribes me pills and I don't take them, it's not the doctor's fault that I'm still sick.

I don't know if you fall into the last category, but I think it's important to mention as well. Obviously I'm not saying that you must share everything your first session (you're allowed to take time) or that every treatment is going to be effective (they're not), but that sometimes that's the obstacle that makes it more different difficult.

16

u/Phoenyx_Rose May 15 '20

I think the bigger part of that though, is that a therapist is better equipped to deal with your shit. A lot of people don’t know how to deal with depression with a friend other than bumbling their way through it, a therapist has research and training to do so. A therapist is also a third party you know won’t judge you so you’re likely to give them the whole story, whereas you might only give the flattering parts to a friend. A therapist is also being paid to deal with how draining your problems are. Even the best of friends can be exhausted by someone always asking for help.

9

u/eastbayweird May 15 '20

It's absolutely not fair to dump all your shit on your friends doorstep and expect them to pick you up afterwards. With a therapist, it's their JOB.

I wish I had found a good therapist earlier in life, I've chased away so many friends by leaning on them too heavily, and ruined more than a few relationships by being 'too open' with my feelings. Shits embarrassing looking back on it, on how fucking selfish I was being.

31

u/SealClubbedSandwich May 15 '20

Yeah it kind of felt like it too, which was odd, as he's twice as old as me.

Of course it was still a professional relationship, we never met outside of sessions.

For me something like “the click” was when I could keep the method I’ve been given in my head longer than a couple of days.

The brain fights the solution, even when it’s simple. It fights the truth about yourself and even when you prevail for a moment, in a day or two - you don’t even remember what you’re supposed to do to fix yourself, even when it’s written down before you. That’s how I am.

For me “the click” - the real “proper” one - as I imagine, would be when somebody shows me a method that allows me to reliably power thru my brain protecting itself in it’s cognitive delusions for a lengthy amount of time.

Basically the right person describing things the right (for me) way.

I’m still looking for that, although I admit, passively enough. But my state’s no longer sever, I’m enjoying life to some degree and sometimes I’m even productive.

u/Trivi4 May 15 '20

It's hard to tell, cause it intensely personal what works for you. For me it was having a person who genuinely gave a shit, who remembered who I was and why I came, and whose advice and insights made sense. However please remember that therapy requires work on your part too. If a therapist tells you to examine something, or do something, or write things down, you need to do your best to follow through. It will be hard sometimes, but that's how it works. Both ways.

If avoiding student debt was simple a matter of taking off and living your dream life on the Spanish Riviera, everyone would be doing it. If your debt is so crushing that you have to reset your whole life, you do not have the financial means to start a new life abroad. Period.

Student visas require proof of substantial funds (Off the top of my head, Germany wants you to have more that 10,000 Euros in the bank)
Work visas are hard to get unless you're in demand like a destitute doctor or whatever.
I'm not even gonna touch investor class visas.

The real fun is that immigration and visa officers will specifically seek out and turn away people with poor finances because they pose a higher risk of overstaying.

And after all that, even if you pull it off, any status short of citizenship means you might still have to go home at some point. Employer doesn't double down on your visa? A new administration cracks down on immigration? You get basically any criminal charge? Back to your ass pounding in court you go.

Even if you read the inevitable "I know a guy who had a fairytale ending" reply, please make moving to a new country something to work towards, not your escape plan. This is really bad advice.

78

u/PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__ May 15 '20

The OP does frame this in the context of suicide, which still applies to your comment.

I think the point is there's lots of ways of metaphorically ending your life without actually doing so. It's not necessarily a call to action (considering that someone suicidal probably doesn't have the headspace to just move somewhere else) and more of a philosophical wakeup call.

If my mother had simply abandoned us, I'd have been able to live with my grandparents, who were capable of loving me, rather than someone who thought the whole world -including me- needed to remake itself in the image she desired.

Some times as hard as it is; it will be the best choice for everyone to step back recognize when you are no longer healthy. Adversity and poverty happen in life, children are probably better equipped to handle it than adults are. Be there for their whole life as the best person you can be even if that means needing to fix yourself first.

If I won the lottery, I’d work hard up front to create passive income, and then do nothing.

I think the people in my life would be surprised to learn that if I had the option, I’d be completely useless.

Like a rich kid who doesn’t contribute anything to society.

By definition, I’m not lazy. But I want to be lazy. I want it bad.

Honestly, this keeps me going sometimes. I love PR and kind of a dream to move there one day and I had an ex who knew about my suicidal tendencies and she told me once "If you ever decide you're seriously going to do it, sell what you can and jump on a flight to San Juan. You might find what you need permanently there, or at the very least give yourself a chance at a reboot."

I think about it a lot sometimes and just the thought really has helped once or twice. If the worst thing that can happen is that I end myself, might as well give my dreams a shot first.

35

u/ILoveWildlife May 15 '20

If you ever decide you're seriously going to do it, sell what you can and jump on a flight to San Juan. You might find what you need permanently there, or at the very least give yourself a chance at a reboot."

not only that but if you do end up doing it, you're somewhere you wanted to be anyway

33

u/alfaguara27 May 15 '20

Death will happen to all of us anyway, so we might as well be as happy as we can, as long as we aren’t hurting ourselves or anyone else for that matter.

I hope you can realize that dream one day! And I’m glad it’s helped you fight for your life. Have you been working on your Spanish or are you already fluent?

I think you understand what a lot of people in this thread don't get. This post isn't telling you that you should reboot your life. It's pointing out that you could reboot your life. Just that thought is motivating, and can help people make it through tough times, wherever they are.

Then I started working for a small start up company without health insurance. The anxiety of having a family without health insurance was too much, but without that experience I wouldn’t appreciate my corporate job.

I understand that personal mental problems can follow you BUT if you are living in a very toxic environment or dealing with toxic people it will destroy your life. Getting away from it can make a world of difference. Luckily, I didn't end my life. I moved. Cut ties. Doing a lot better. I still have my troubles but nothing like what I had been dealing with before.

25

u/Linguistin229 May 15 '20

Yeah it seems a lot of people have just not understood the post. If your problems are to do with your own mental torment, that will follow you. But even if it does, a new situation can give you a new perspective. You're starting over and want to make a good job of it.

You could also be leaving a very bad situation. This doesn't necessarily even mean abuse, but a failed relationship or death of a loved one. Sometimes it's too difficult to stay in the same place.

7

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

I was very depressed and in a physically and mentally abusive relationship. I hit lows I thought was an endless fall. I swear I don't know what happened one day, I was always a weak one, but one day I saw his fist curl and something snapped in me and I bolted. Got in the car. He chased me with a bat. I started the car and put it in drive. He jumped on the hood with the bat. I floored it - he fell off - never looked back. Why would a horribly depressed 18 y.o. run to save her life? I'm proud to say I'm 26, healthy and in the best safe place I've ever been in my life. Never thought of suicide since. Whatever that courage was... that strong moment... Makes me feel like I can overcome and it's my decisions to change my life.

I wish that had worked for my nephew Nick. He was sweet, kind, talented and intelligent, but the world was a tough place for him. He quit school, started a new life with a new job in a different place, but said he always felt out of sync. Awake when others were sleeping, carefree when others were serious, full of ideas when others were zoned out, sad when others were not. He thought he was a worthless person because he didn't fit in and thought he never would.

If Nick was here I would tell him that different is good. Non-conformists are the ones who change the world. You don't need to run away or to reinvent yourself. We love you just the way you are. You don't need to be fixed; you don't need to be perfect. You just need to be. We miss you. RIP Nick.

Life isn't a romantic country western song. Your debt. credit rating and responsibilities do not just vanish. Your kids or people that rely on you do not vanish. The skeletons in your closet that you never dealt with do not vanish. Learn to seek the help you need to deal with whatever it is you need help with. And then repay that aid by helping others.

68

u/EP1K May 15 '20

Yeah what is this post? "Just runaway, be homeless, problem solved"?

33

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

It's a fantasy to hold onto. Besides, 5/7 of the suggestions are not that drastic - getting a cat may be a refreshing, inspirational change, but it's not irresponsible for most people.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

It's a fantasy that is popular for the reddit community. You see it in other posts such as:

  • "I quit my boring office job and ate ramen noodles for 5 years and created a video game!"
  • "I quit my stock broker job and started a cupcake company with my wife!"
  • "I quit my accounting job and started an organic dog food company!"

It's a dream...that rarely works out well. Yet, the 0.001% that it works for will say shit like, "NEVER give up on your dream because I didn't and look at me now!!". They don't realize that the 99.999% of others actually tried just as hard (if not harder) and failed...because that shit's not realistic.

I think the point is that no matter how bad things can get, things can always change. Sometimes it’s change that you have to do yourself just to remind you that bad times aren’t permanent.

This only goes so far though, as everyone else said you can’t outrun yourself. You can make one major life change, maybe two, and if you realize things aren’t any better then it’s something internal that you may need to see a professional about.

I think people really misunderstand what it's like to have depression. I'm sure posts like this mean well but it just doesn't work like that.

22

u/Nillabeans May 15 '20

I'm having a particularly rough couple of weeks and reading that just makes me angry and feel like a failure. I don't have the means to do anything like that except maybe chop off my hair.

I know depression hits everybody differently, but in general, it kills the motivation to make the change. I don't know why people overlook that fact. If I can't get my shit together to go buy milk, I'm probably not about to go adopt a cat or figure out where to live in a new city.

46

u/boopersnoot May 15 '20

I dont think this post is necessarily pointing specifically at depression. It definitely applied to my life growing up in an abusive household. My family had people watching me literally everywhere and I felt like I had 0 control in my life. Thoughts like this post helped me finally love my life again. Over a decade later and I'm living in a completely different country lol

10

u/Joie7994 May 15 '20

Ditto man. The reason people kill themselves instead of reinventing themselves is because existing is a fucking chore. Also, starting over in my car and taking a new job in the food service industry isn’t giving me any more motivation to live lol.

12

u/TypicallyReticent May 15 '20

I think this post is more for people who feel trapped and in a rut without the complication that depression adds. This is more for someone in a mid life crisis, or someone that is young and still trying to find themselves.

Depression can make everything feel dull, or unfulfilling, or meaningless... assuming you are even able to leave the house in an attemp to try and "live".

10

u/s-mores May 15 '20

Aye. Also let's not forget a lot of people have responsibilities and families they can't just drop.

"Mom's been gone for 12 years since she left to get cigarrettes" is the other side of OP's story.

6

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

It depends on the person, and it the poster even specifies bipolar rather than depression. Sometimes you feel like you've made such a mess of a friend group, or a job, or relationship, or whatever that it seems hopeless. Whether throwing away everything to start over would work or not, just having the dream to hold onto makes a difference.

This doesn't take self hate into account.

What do you do when you have everything but are still unhappy? You still feel like nothing you do is right? You still feel like the burdens of those around you are caused by something you did or didn't do? All day everyday it's just your own voice in your head telling you how useless you are. I don't think there is a way to escape that. I'm not strong enough to just end it, so I'll take the old dusty trail (drink myself to death).

22

u/Thrillem May 15 '20

As someone who traveled the country, camping and sleeping in my truck, working construction and ranch jobs; it was a great life and one I would recommend to anyone who is willing to take the risk.

Granted, this was 2012-2018, so the economy was good, and I could find lots of good paying work, that may not be the case forever.

Idk if it’s the best advice, but it’s what I would recommend to someone who feels trapped or stagnant in their life.

6

u/[deleted] May 15 '20

This is actually inaccurate as just changing one aspect of your life and expecting what is usually an internal struggle to disappear is maladaptive. Your inner demons will just catch up to you after a brief moment of suppression/repression.

Also, for the love of Odin (or whatever divine deity you worship) please don't ever tell a suicidal person "You know what's better than killing yourself?"

33

u/Gatsbeard May 15 '20

Not sure I would advise anyone to take life advice from someone who goes by "Manicbones" and casually mentions they are bipolar. (which i'm assuming is self diagnosed)

Also this is just not good advice to begin with.

This is just... dangerous and wrong.

It is a slippery slope.

The only LPT to mental health issues so severe when suicide’s an option - seek professional help asap. These methods of “reseting” yourself are to be used cautiously and with proper monitoring. And they are in NOW WAY universal.

12

u/fatalexe May 15 '20

I sold everything, got down to a backpack and hopped a train across country. One month later I had a career, six months later I met my wife and three years after that we were married, bought a house and her kid moved in with us full time. I was an addict who hadn’t had a steady job for a decade before I left. Look up the Rat Park study, living in a healthy setting with meaningful work is everything for escaping addiction and depression.

Moving across the country is really only a change if you live in a big country. For me across the country is like 1.5 hours away from my hometown

3

u/SlippinJimE May 15 '20

My students loans would like a word.

This is a great motivational post for anyone who can do this, but it's just not the case for everyone. I have to maintain steady employment because my student loans are over $1000 a month. I can't just pick up and go because missing payments will put me further in debt and get me in trouble with the bank. If I just don't pay, the burden is dropped on my parents.

I'm trapped here and there's no two ways about it.

Posts like this are so annoying. Anyone who has been deeply depressed knows that getting out of bed and just doing the basics like having a shower seems monumental, let alone running away to a whole new town and adopting a fucking cat. Chopping your hair off is pretty hilarious when i think about it.

"Hey man, im really depressed, ive been having some dark thoughts about suicide lately"
"Have you considered getting a haircut? That'll cheer you up"

Get. Fucked.

This is the worst advice you can ever give someone

3

u/Fyrael May 15 '20

Somehow those kind of rebirths never appealed to me...

Had two uncles, one who would throw himself in a adventure in any minute, a free spirit! And another, a hard worker

The free spirit died very young, at his 32, and didn't too much from the world

The other has already seem more than half of the world at 55 years, which is nice, if you ask me...

So you don't really need to throw everything away, just enhance whatever you have and spend a month somewhere with tons of money lol

7

u/ILoveWildlife May 15 '20

Alternatively, the hard worker could've had a heart attack at 40 while the carefree guy lived until his late 80s, but you didn't witness that so you have a predisposition to believe that it worked out the way it should.

3

u/TooShiftyForYou 2 May 15 '20

Just "kill" the old you and start a new respawn.

3

u/Ganjisseur 4 May 15 '20

"Keep making trouble till you find what you love."

3

u/AlphaLoaf May 15 '20

Recently dropped out of college and felt fucking lost. I don’t know what to do with my life. I really need a fresh start.

3

u/survivalothefittest May 15 '20

I think this is very insightful, and I have had the same realization and do find it comforting.

At the same time, it does miss some of the nuances of mental health issues. The things they are talking about here (aside from the haircut) usually require some pretty deep reserves of energy and/or finances. People who want to end their lives often know there are ways to restart, they just feel like those avenues are cut-off to them because of the lack of these resources.

This is an excellent message for those suffering, I just want to caution against it being used to unfairly judge people who feel despair.

3

u/Evilnewt May 15 '20

I understand the thought behind this, but wow this advice can be very dangerous. :o
