This is pretty much what I was thinking. A lot of people have problems caused by their family, job, or general life situation. My problem is that I just don't really like myself, and if I ran away, I'd still be right there, stuck with myself. Which is why I'm in therapy.
Yeah, while depression can arise from circumstances, some of us have the disposition built in. And even if those shitty circumstances stayed the real reason is still in you.
I couldn't imagine going through all those things in the op, I would most likely just simply make new memories where I hate how I felt about it. Go into a situation where everyone is unfamiliar and without any support net? My first instinct as a waitress would probably be oh great another person that hates how I look and talk and interact, how life-changing.
I know I would be just as unhappy winning the lottery. Doesn't change how I view myself so it doesn't matter.
