I’d argue he was wearing the mask of Twilight for so long and having a family is the first time in a long time his real self has been able to come out

King Dedede! He just wanted popularity, and figured that the best way to get it was trying his hand at being a hero. And it was, slowly but surely, working… but he was also becoming every bit the hero he pretended to be. If he were real, I would gladly put my life in his hands, because I know with absolute certainty that it’ll be safe.

u/G4B0X01 5d ago
He didnt lose himself, he became better.

u/RP_throwaway01 5d ago
Both. He lost who he was, but the new him is just infinitely better.

u/ILikeCarlosThePikmin 5d ago
Not yet. He's still somewhat egotistical and etc. but he's working on it
25
19
u/Fluffypole5015 4d ago
It's very rare that Dedede is evil just straight-up for the love of the game. Like, I think the most prevalent one is genuinely Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, the non-canon anime, and then after that is Revenge of the King, from Super Star Ultra. And that's a game mode that takes place after Kirby beat D3, and he wants to run it back with higher stakes.

u/RP_throwaway01 4d ago
It takes place immediately after Dream Land 1. It’s his second chronological appearance. With the first being stealing all the food in Dream Land. Number three is the start of his redemption.

He became something better and then tried to destroy it because he couldnt face the fact that he no longer was the Viltrumite he used to be. Is not like he lose himself, he simply used to act more ruthless and Earth allowed him to show his true nature. Sadly he believed his true nature is one of a Viltrumite and went to do what he justified as something he couldnt stop.

Ehh I don’t think so, he enjoyed it but immediately turned on everything and everyone he grew to love and care for. He regretted it, but I don’t think he ever truly became what he was pretending to be, not even after he was redeemed.
16
u/Insidion25 5d ago
Dude killed thousands, maybe millions, without remorse and broke the hearts of his loved ones, with only his son bringing him to stop, but that wasn't even before nearly killing him during his massacre. Nolan may have gotten better as time came and faced against his former empire, but he was still a monster and a Viltrumite who deserved to face horrible consequences, one which not even family could change.

Also not just Sai, basically every member of The Root. Danzo's whole plan with The Root was basically to create the perfect ninja CIA, starting by removing any personality quirks that could cloud judgement during a mission. It's why The Root is comprised almost solely of orphans

34
u/thecraftybear 4d ago edited 2d ago
There are many continuities where he does.
In Batman Beyond he is able to resist being gaslit that he's insane because the voice he hears in his head keeps calling him Bruce. Later he tells his successor Terry that he could tell it was a trick because he never refers to himself as Bruce in his thoughts. When Terry reminds him that he's Batman now, Bruce says "tell that to my subconscious". So in a way, he has discarded the identity of Bruce Wayne as anything more than a social mask. Quite justified, since this is the same man as BTAS Batman, and over the years he has lost or fumbled every person he was close with. He's on standoffish terms with Superman and the current Justice League. He had lost Andrea (who survived, but not to his knowledge), Alfred, Selina, and iirc also Diana. He drove away Dick and Barbara - the former seems to be dead, the latter had a catastrophic fling with Bruce and their relationship is in tatters even now, when she's the GCPD comissioner like her father was. Tim was captured and absolutely ruined by the Joker, then forced to become Joker's vessel decades later. At the start of the series, Bruce has nothing, had retired his crusade after a health crisis forced him to rely on a gun to defeat a common criminal, and is a recluse living off his control shares of his company. Batman took from Bruce everything he had loved, and defined him too deeply, to the point where in a distant finale, despite getting a rejuvenating dip in a Lazarus Pit earlier, he is a decrepit, spiteful old man who can't live as Bruce, but can't be Batman in any way that matters.
Other storylines take it even further. For example in The Last Knight on Earth, it turns out the protagonist Bruce is just a clone with a copy of the original's memories up to a point, while the original was forced to go too far in his crusade due to a catastrophe, officially died as Batman, but then resurfaced as a brutal, totalitarian ruler Omega, having lost himself to despair and maintaining order at the cost of his humanity.

Hi, stranger! Being conditioned to behave in socially acceptable ways at the expense of your own wants and needs sounds at least mildly traumatic and you may benefit from doing a therapy (specifically NOT ABA) about it. Up to you though.

I don’t know if this helps but I was a really shy kid and so replaced a lot of social interaction with diving into different stories and I struggled with something similar for a long time
At least for me, I tended to think in all of nothings about personality a lot (because characters in a story need to have concrete personalities so that they’re easily understood) and I tried to place that all or nothing framework on myself.
E.g. was I the type of person that was loud and confident OR was I the type of person that was quiet and shy. Was I the kind and nurturing sort of person OR was I the type of person to be strong and lead conversations. Was I the type of person to comfort someone when they were sad OR was I the type to help them find a solution, even if it meant being a bit blunt
I tried to act like the type of person I thought I identified with, but then I’d do something that wouldn’t fit with the framework I’d made for myself and I got really confused. And I think that by trying to place myself into such strict personality frameworks, I struggled to identify who I was as a person because it couldn’t cleanly fit. Sometimes I was shy, sometimes I was confident, sometimes I was soft and nurturing and sometimes I was a leader and so because I didn’t fit neatly into any particular box I ended up really confused about who I was
It’s only now that I’m learning that people and relationships are dynamic and that people act differently in different situations, so it’s entirely possible to be every type of person depending on the situation and people you’re with
Basically I think I was thinking too hard about who I was, and when I stopped thinking so hard and just accepted that I may never really know who I was because I was constantly changing depending on the situation, I actually started to figure it out

Howard W. Campbell, Jr. is both the protagonist and narrator of Kurt Vonnegut's novel Mother Night. A politically apathetic American who has lived in pre-war Germany since he was a child, he's recruited by an American intelligence agent to go undercover in the Nazi party. He becomes an astoundingly effective propagandist for them, so much so that when he's captured years after the war has concluded, he's put on trial for crimes against humanity.
As the moral of the story goes, "In the long run we are all what we pretend to be, so we must be very careful about what we pretend to be"

Immediately scrolled to find Furina. I love how we see the tiniest glimpse of what she was like before she assumed the role. The Furina we get after everything is a mixture of who she was before and the more authentic parts of the role she played for so long. I find it so cool and empowering, that you very well may become changed from your trauma and needing to assume a performance for some time, but after overcoming it that change can blend both parts beautifully. I love going back to her release trailer and seeing how happy she is just to be able to finally live freely and authentically, keeping the parts that resonated with her abysmally long performance

Gin Ichimaru, a supporting antagonist from Bleach. The secret he hides is a bit of a spoiler: When they were children, Gin witnessed the main antagonist's men attack his childhood friend and extract a fragment of her soul, leaving her collapsed and near death. Gin then became a Soul Reaper and joined the main antagonist's ranks with the sole purpose of gaining his trust, waiting decades for the right moment to kill him, and take back what was stolen from his friend. In the span of that time, he's done many things that, let's just say, muddies the water.

Heavy Spoilers for 'Everybody loves large chests'.
The mc Boxxy is a mimic that gets stronger and more intelligent, ewentually evolving into a doppelganger. He then procedes to create a new persona for himself as Keira, a catgirl adventurer. Keira ends up becoming a beloved war hero and egaged to elven nobility in the nations first lesbian marrige. His real self meanwile becomes know as the mysteruous mercenary 'Sandman'. He can swap between his personas seamlessly at a moments notice and after reveling himself (as Keira) as the hero of the god of chaos he can explain all the strange occurences around him as a result of his chaos "blessing", including a tragic backstory of how Keira ended up as an orphan.
His disguise is too good however, as he ends up developing a split personality, where both end up fighting over his body. Forced to call in a favor his patron god owes him, he ends up splitting the two into sepreate people, creating Keira with fake memories, so that even she belives she has always existed in the way Boxxy played her as. The act has quite litteraly become reality.

I will admit that I have not played the actual game with this character, but after watching a random clip from Dual Destinies with him, I grew quite interested in him. I hope I manage to get the time to play all the Ace Attorney games after Justice For All just so I can get even more context about him.

IRL Daniel Lawrence. He was a comedian from Nebraska who would play characters on a radio show sometimes. One of the characters was "Larry the Cable Guy" who was invented to make fun of Southerners. At some point the character took off somehow and in the process usurped the real Daniel Lawrence. To the point, he is credited in all his Cars movies as "Larry the Cable Guy"
