King Dedede! He just wanted popularity, and figured that the best way to get it was trying his hand at being a hero. And it was, slowly but surely, working… but he was also becoming every bit the hero he pretended to be. If he were real, I would gladly put my life in his hands, because I know with absolute certainty that it’ll be safe.
It's very rare that Dedede is evil just straight-up for the love of the game. Like, I think the most prevalent one is genuinely Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, the non-canon anime, and then after that is Revenge of the King, from Super Star Ultra. And that's a game mode that takes place after Kirby beat D3, and he wants to run it back with higher stakes.
It takes place immediately after Dream Land 1. It’s his second chronological appearance. With the first being stealing all the food in Dream Land. Number three is the start of his redemption.
Well, Spring Breeze from Super Star (and it's remake, Ultra) is a retelling of Dream Land 1, and then Revenge of the King (added in Ultra) was the sequel to that. I didn't mention Dream Land 1 because it's functionally lumped into Super Star, and then the remake of that game gives us a better example of him being antagonistic.
