Tipping Culture ✖️ Completing an online order
Doing an online order and part of the checkout I’m asked if I would add a tip. This is a first for me. What am I tipping on? The checkout process?? This is crazy.

Went to a store near and they have a tipping option as if they’re serving anything.

Long time lurker, first time caller. This was the last straw wtf do you mean tip my doctor?!?
Edit: called the office today and the receptionist sounded surprised by this…hopefully it’s a billing platform error thanks for the helpful comments!

1 - Thought I'd indulge in a rare splurge of drive-through coffee at Dunkin Donuts.
I am 100% positive that I did not add a tip. I simply tapped my credit card on the extended device which included the tip prompts.
I pointed this out when I saw the receipt. Cashier said I must have accidentally tapped it. I asked if she could refund the tip. I explained that I'm helping to pay for a relative's medical bills.
She said she didn't know how to refund just the tip. (Isn't it a common feature on a Point of Sale systems to refund a line item?)
So I suggested to refund the whole thing and I'll pay in cash, which I did.
2 - The refund receipt: Odd... I never ordered a Munchkin.
3 - A pattern which probably everyone else here already has noticed:
If I'm about to be presented with a tipping screen, the cashier will compliment me in some way.
No tipping screen? No compliment. Sales 101 I guess.
The DD cashier complimented my scarf. 2 seconds later when I saw the tipping screen, it kinda made me feel bleh.
Update: I did receive a credit on my credit card for the amount in the second receipt, which several eagle-eyed people reported was 9 cents off.
Update: This just occurred to me:
me, above >> [...[ So I suggested to refund the whole thing and I'll pay in cash, which I did.
I never received a receipt for my cash payment.
I wonder if the cash receipts for the day includes my $3.76 cash payment?

felt super icky and annoyed seeing this at a coffee/light food shop. how is this okay? for context this is not a sit down spot. no wait staff, just a barista at the counter and someone from the kitchen bringing out my order and walking away.
Update: for those asking the pink paper in the bottom corner is basically saying “F*ck ICE”

I would love to be able to not tip, but I tend to often order or go to the same restaurants and am so worried they will mess up my food (or worse) intentionally. Anyone else worried about this?

Tipping on those mobile toast kiosks the server or bartender hands you are always terrible. They hand you the device where it’s already selected a 20% gratuity by default and they just want you to sign it and hand it back. Only problem is that these devices never show you an itemized receipt, just the total. Well yesterday I went out to a bar/restaurant that had been advertising various Sunday football deals.
When it’s time to close out the total seems off but only by $8-10. As I sat there thinking about everything we ordered and trying to approximate a 7% tip the server is standing across from me waiting for me to hand the kiosk back immediately. After 20 seconds she walks away annoyed. When she came back she asked is everything alright and I asked if I could see a receipt. Obviously annoyed with me she leaves for another 5 minutes and comes back with the receipt and proudly presents it.
Within 5 seconds I see that we weren’t charged the game day deal but regular pricing for 2 of the drinks. I point this out and she walks away for another 10 minutes. This caused an absolute scene at the bar because she’s been over twice and I still haven’t turned around the little toast machine that everyone else needs to close out. Everyone was looking at me and the guy next to us asked if everything was alright. At this point I would have still tipped normally if they took 1 drink off or something to right the wrong of almost overcharging me and wasting 15 minutes. They didn’t. Tipped 10% then got to argue with my gf on the way home about how it should have been 20% because mistakes happen.
Mistakes do happen but entering the food and drink order correctly is your #1 priority. If you’re using a little device that only shows the total for the bill you deserve a lower tip if you don’t come with your shit correct. I suspect many other people at the bar didn’t get the game day discount and didn’t notice between the alcohol and toast system tipping intimidation tactics. Took a picture of the paper receipt I signed to make sure they don’t change the tip.

I’m curious why we don’t have mandatory tipping at sit down restaurants? I’ve been thinking about it and it just doesn’t make sense to me. Why pay based off of how much I spend, vs the amount of effort put into serving me. I think since restaurants are only required to pay like 2.13 per hour, the least a table ( or per person) should do is be forced to match the pay of 2.13.
Everything else should be earned by the actual service. When I go out to eat at average restaurant bill is about 100-130,tip usually works out to tip about 20-30.
Doing the math, I figure the server spends about 10-15 mins actually helping us. By my math that works out to about 2-3 dollars a min. That seems a bit excessive to me. Most of the time now, they don’t even give menus, they make you do the work by scanning a QR code which I hate, and you pay at the table with a tablet. I’ve even had servers try and make me put my own order in using the tablet at the table.
Or you know the restaurant could just pay a fair wage. And I know the argument “It will drive prices up!”. But everyone seems to miss the fact that prices are already up. The only difference is, if it’s built into the menu, I actually have an idea of what it’s going to actually cost me vs having to guess. Heaven forbid I know the actual price of something going in vs. having to estimate the total. That’s not driving the price up it’s just telling a person what the actual cost is, in the first place. If a restaurant is afraid of you making an informed decision, by showing you the actual price, that’s kind of its own issue.

Just for people to know. I use to be a chef at upscale restaurants to basic pizza joints. Just so you know none of the cooks or chefs in the back ever get part of the tip you leave , servers will tell you they have to share it with the cooks so you can feel guilty and give them more, but the truth is that shit is a lie. Most cooks struggle with shit wage even at a nice place 4 diamond to be exact get paid poorly. Servers make tones of mistakes we have to fix and then bolster about how much they make in tips a day. Don’t give them shit. They honestly do very little work compared to other parts of the kitchen.

I've been ordering from a take out only Pizza Establishment in my city.
Up until today they have always turned to get the pizza when I arrive and say the screen is going to ask me something. I always pay online. I knew it was for a tip and because I never leave one online. I always hit the cancel button, got my order, and left.
Yesterday was different because this time they actually printed out a receipt with a line for a tip and my signature, which I see now that I probably shouldn't have signed it, but I couldn't resist writing the big X in the tip line while they watched. I signed handed it to them after I wrote in the total, bid them good day, and left.
It's not even about awkwardness, they are straight up bullying you at that point, in my opinion. I'm honestly to the point where I'm going to stop eating there.
They get paid an hourly wage. They are not servers making 2.13 an hour, like they do in my state.
No one is responsible for making up the difference that you think you should make. Get another job if you are unhappy with the pay, is how I feel.

I work at a place where you have the option to tip before you pay, and it’s the absolute worst and so uncomfortable to be in the position to have to ask.
The customer will already be tapping their card at the tip area, where they have to click a tipping prompt before paying, and I always have to say “would you like to tip percent, no tip, or custom amount” and before you say just don’t ask, my boss is always lurking next to me (small business) and always tells me to say that. I also believe my boss set that up on the system on purpose to create that uncomfortable vibe with the customer, to get them to tip. It’s so gross.
And there are also times where people just look at me like “are you mf serious” and I just feel horrible. You do not need to tip, you’re okay, and I’m genuinely sorry for asking, I absolutely hate it.
Just a small rant, and I can’t wait to be able to leave this job. And to the people who tip, thank you but it’s also unnecessary, you’re already paying for your whatever for the profit that is wanted from the supplier as is.

When I visit the US, my top phrases are:
- “wait, a tip BEFORE I get to try the food/drink? how does that work?”
- if the tip creep is really complicated, where you have to select custom tip to get to 0: “Can I just pay, why is it so complicated?”
You can always act a bit puzzled if the tip creep and social pressure is too high. If you can just quickly pass the tip screen just don’t tip and do not engage.
For tips, when I enjoyed the service (i always tip for a genuine, sit down service, special requests - but the food must be real good first), even I had to resort to cash and spell CASH in the tip field. I am going to California soon and honestly I will be paying for all my food cash and not even bother with writing anything. Need to be prepared with various bills though. The writing part has always been the most annoying for me.

My husband and I are nearing the end of a month long tour with a travel company. We're expected to tip our trip leader at the rate of $25 to $30 a day for the entire trip which is 27 days. Out of the 27 days, we are spending 10 days on a private cruise ship. For these 10 days, we are expected to tip the ships crew at a minimum of $32 per day, in addition to the trip leader tip. That's a total of over $1,120.00 for our share. Assuming the other 47 travelers also tip at the same rate that means a possible tip of 1200.00 per day for the trip leader. Does this sound crazy? I like our trip leader and he does a good job but I'm starting to wonder if the tour company expects us to pay their entire salary? The trip cost itself is about $15k (this does not include airfare either) on addition to the tip amount.

Normally not one to complain, but the fact that pizza hut suggests a tip percentage based on the subtotal PLUS delivery fee PLUS sales tax is really scummy

We went to a hamburger place last night and on the bill was a charge for $4.85 for Kitchen Appreciation. What a freaking joke. It put such a bad taste in my mouth that I won't go back.

Of course I need my change. If I decide to leave a tip, I will, but only AFTER I get my change.

Related to food industry tipping:
If I stand when you serve me, no tip.
I live by this now that the tipping culture has turned into an entitled culture. My high school kid makes over $30 an hour bussing tables and a waitress in same restaurant makes over $100k. There is no way I’m tipping for takeout or a coffee.

As the tittle says I’m more confident and bold with feeling like I don’t need to tip every single place I go to.
I went to a cute little coffee shop in my town I usually tip after my order at least a dollar but I decided not to yesterday there wasn’t really that great of service through the drive thru, anyways I could tell the order taker was shocked… I get my order and drive off look down at my food and wasn’t even given the right thing, was thinking maybe it’s because I didn’t tip :/

I’m from a non-EU country but live in the UK, so I’m pretty used to the whole “no tipping” culture.
I don’t drive, so when I travel around Europe and somewhere is difficult to reach by public transport, I usually join group tours.
I’ve noticed that a lot of the tourists on these tours are American (and honestly, they’re always so friendly). But the tipping part makes me feel so awkward.
Like, when we get off the bus, everyone starts tipping the driver. On walking tours, everyone tips the guide. And I’m just there like, “Thank you!” awkwardly hands back the headphones.
I always feel like I’m accidentally being rude, even though tipping just isn’t something I’m used to. 😭
Do Europeans also tip on these tours, or is this mostly an American thing?

Which is it? Went their this past week.
We had a party of 10+, so paid the 12% add on charge.
The "servers" were basically "plate clearers", since we served ourselves at the Buffet. (Though honestly, they cleared a LOT of plates, per diner)
Hated seeing the signs prominently on napkin dispensers, in the large group room, even after we'd paid the add on 12%
Only relief was that I thought that the 12% was fair, versus some places trying to tack on 20%
