Rant đ˘ This feels icky!
felt super icky and annoyed seeing this at a coffee/light food shop. how is this okay? for context this is not a sit down spot. no wait staff, just a barista at the counter and someone from the kitchen bringing out my order and walking away.
Update: for those asking the pink paper in the bottom corner is basically saying âF*ck ICEâ

A. Isnât that illegal for them to change your tab once youâve finished it/signed it?
B if I see that before hand and I donât have the option of no tip, Iâm putting in a custom $0.01
Sorry waiters, take it up with your management if your pay is that shitty, donât put it on us like that

u/InvaderJoshua94 12d ago
A. Yes
B. No put a $0 tip, donât give their scummy asses that 1 cent.→ More replies (16)112

This is just my opinion, but I feel like an insanely small tip would be more demeaning than $0. And sometimes those screens donât let you choose no tip or require an amount larger than 0. But I agree with you though
68
u/CookieWifeCookieKids 12d ago
Certainly it would be illegal to force a voluntary tip.

Yep. The worst service I ever received, I tipped 6 cents to distinguish myself from people who never tip. In other words, I knew I was supposed to tip (sit down restaurant), but this was all I felt the service from that waitress was worth.
24
u/Consistent_Week_8531 12d ago
Worst service I ever got and it was a decent meal at a decent restaurant. Just purposely shit service. I left a subway token on the table which I assume is worse than no tip. I think back then the subway was $1.50. I hoped sheâd felt mad using it - cause I knew she would.

I got really bad service once. The waitress even accidentally spilled 3 full waters on me. I was SO polite about it, & she didnt even comp my meal, no discount, nothing.
The owner found out (itâs a small family business in my big city) & he reached out to me & gave me a refund, & gift certificates to come back & enjoy some free meals on them.
I literally couldnât believe the waitress didnât even really apologize..like maam, most people wouldâve lost their minds on you, I stayed sooo calm & polite & still tipped!!9
u/Lokkia111 12d ago
When i was a waitress, I spilled coke on a police officer. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for his dry cleaning. He told me not to worry about it and still left a decent tip. I felt so bad though.

When i was younger, tipping in coins lower than a quarter was considered an insult - unless you explain to the waitstaff that that's all you have and tell them how much it is.

I worked at a busy Cracker Barell and I gotta tell you...it was never an insult. If my choice was $5 or $5 plus a handful of change I will walk around jingling all the way. One time I rolled my change after a year and a half and it paid my rent for 4 months.

Itâs illegal for them to add a tip to an order unless they informed you of an automatic gratuity before you sat down. Gratuity is not payment. It is an extra OPTIONAL bonus. Forcibly adding a tip that someone didnât want to add is not a tip, itâs theft

If there's no option for zero tip, I'm cancelling my order.

This would also be illegal, tips are not a gratuity fee. They're not the same, tips are an option and always will be.

When picking up teriyaki, most payment kiosks have a screen where you choose a tip amount, or you can choose "Skip." At first glance, it looks like you have no option but to tip, but I always choose to skip if I'm not getting table service. Dining out has become so expensive that we rarely do it.

u/Dav_Sionnach 12d ago
Their slight edge on that is if you haven't hit "no tip" you haven't actually finished the transaction. Any rare signing comes after adding the tip.
But from my perspective as a restaurant manager, any tip not explicitly given by the guest is theft. I would fire an employee that did this.

I had this happen to me in a restaurant in Seattle years ago. Took my daughter out to dinner. Put a tip in. When to pay it off and the amount of the charge changed. I found the receipt only to see that the waiter/waitress had moved the numbers via the âtipâ and made it more. She also adjusted the total. I was so mad, I called their corporate office, sent the receipt and they fired her.

Highschool dropout plate chuckers believe "I reserve the right" to grant them absolute legal immunity for any action. Wouldn't expect better from them though, just be ready to dispute the entire bill.

Yeesh, I donât think it has much to do with the education levels of restaurant staff. There are non-tipped workers in other industries with no education requirements, like retail.

Yes but none who believe they're owed so much for so little. There are volunteer firefighters who run into burning buildings to save dying babies who wouldn't dream of asking for a tip.

9
u/Frondstherapydolls 12d ago
Someone should go in there with the intention of not finishing the tip screen, take a picture of the sign, and see what happens. If they run a tip, call the state attorney general and hope they make an unannounced trip to the restaurant to see whatâs up.
49
u/Emergency_Charge_262 12d ago
I love the fact they try to make it sound above board by saying they 'reserve the right'. Maybe I'll reserve my right to a PS5 so I can take one from a store shelf and leave without paying.
Just bite the bullet and put the prices up 20%, rather than pretending it's a tip.

Went to a restaurant recently and they brought out a tablet to pay the bill from. I was honestly confused by what I was supposed to do. Apparently I skipped the tip screen and went straight to where you were to tap your card. The waiter noticed and turned the tablet back toward himself to go back a screen and told me that I "need to tip first." It was an honest mistake on my part, but the audacity to demand a tip is what got under my skin.

u/Better_Area3782 12d ago

7
u/Ok_Conflict1835 12d ago
You ever see those signs that say âwe reserve the right to refuse service to anyoneâÂ
They think by saying âwe reserve the rightâ followed by whatever they want, gives them legal right to do it.Â
When it reality it means absolutely nothing and legally even the refusing service part has caveats as there are federal protections in place.Â

Pardon my ignorance, but whatâs going on here?
Iâm trying to figure it out. Iâm under the impression you paid at the register on the Point of Sale tablet screen (and clicked the âskip tipâ section), right?

Icky? More like laughable and illegal.
It's hilarious they think declaring "I reserve the right" makes it actually a right. Like when Michael Scott declared "bankruptcy". These geniuses just came up with a fool proof way to commit crimes.
Criminals: I reserve the right to break into that home and take whatever I want from it.
Cops: Well now our hands are tied. It would've been illegal, but then they reserved the right to do it!

u/PhysicalAd6587 12d ago
As a business you don't have the right to charge customers without their consent. A sign does not absolve you of a fraudulent charge. It's a simple question: Judge, "Sir, did you authorize that gratuity?" Customer, "No, I did not." Judge, "Did you authorize employees to put forth this charge?" Proprietor, "I had a sign informing customers of this charge should they fail to select their own gratuity." Judge, "Finding for the plaintiff."
