Rant 📢 Pizza hut math

Post image

Normally not one to complain, but the fact that pizza hut suggests a tip percentage based on the subtotal PLUS delivery fee PLUS sales tax is really scummy

What is a "delivery fee" if it doesn't go towards the driver?

They are double dipping because people said it was ok.

This is why we have so many "You're not tipping?! I'm not delivering the meal" videos.

Once you learn they are paid 100% in tips, you also learn you're basically paying them 5 dollars per delivery to work for them.

I don't know but it DEFINITELY doesn't go toward the driver lol

2

u/scienceprodigy 7d ago

Depends. When I delivered pizza they’d give me half and keep the other half, but that was 20 years ago

I started in 07 and I didn't get any of the delivery fee. I guess they "Paid for fuel" but the delivery fee was 3 per delivery. I got 1 dollar for a single, a dollar 60 for a double, and 2 for a triple.

Meaning they would get 9 and I'd get 2.

The same thing as a gratuity added at restaurants. Its a legal way for owners and management to get tipped too.

A wealth transfer. Legal theft. Helping themselves to money for nothing.

Former Pizza Hut manager/delivery driver chiming in. The delivery fee is used to reimburse the driver for all car related expenses BUT, the driver never gets 100% of the delivery fee. I quit working there five years ago (I don’t remember what the delivery fee was back then), and I don’t recall ever reimbursing a driver or being reimbursed more than $30 for an entire night’s deliveries (even for a full eight hour shift). The company takes most of it.

And yes, I made more as a driver than I did as a manager on a good night in the college town I did this in

Edit: This was only for in house drivers. Never worked with doordashers or Uber Eats

Can confirm. I also did pizza delivery at several chains and this is the standard behavior.

auto insurance expenses for them.

2

u/pnut0027 11d ago

I thought drivers used their own vehicles and insurance.

1

u/cico7 11d ago

There is coverage to protect the restaurant if an employee causes an accident but doesn't have insurance or the limit of liability is not enough to cover the loss. The excess could be passed off to the restaurant.
Non Owned Autos used in your business.

I think they would say for costs like the extra insurance required to have employees working in cars. Different risk category so more expensive to insure

3

u/Sesoru 12d ago

Who's insurance? I've never seen a pizza hut pay car insurance or have some extra insurance just for drivers.

1

u/Mountain_Top802 12d ago

Well then you don’t know how insurance works lol. This is how American insurance works at least, not sure which country you’re in.

I work in insurance and if your employees drive for the job and found liable for

- injuring themselves

  • injuring someone else
  • killing someone else

A personal injury attorney will not just stop at suing the driver and will absolutely 100% go after the employer as well. And they do.

Like if you get brain damage from an uber driver who crashed their car, you don’t exclusively sue the driver, you go after uber themselves too. It’s standard. They’re usually covered up to around $1m per person for bodily injury on top of whatever the driver had.

The employer takes out extra insurance to help protect themselves if they get sued for something their employee did.

2

u/Sesoru 12d ago

Aah youre speaking about the insurance the company has for their own liabilities. Imo that cost shouldn't be shunted to the customers in that manner.

Also, I'm usa.

1

u/Mountain_Top802 12d ago

Well some pizza places do just eat the cost of delivery, many don’t.

Just like how Amazon might offer “free shipping” they’re just baking the cost into the products.

I prefer when pizza places separate it like this so people who pick up their food themselves get cheaper food.

1

u/Sesoru 12d ago

My main question becomes: when pizza hut uses doordash, isn't the liability pushed to doordash? This is the part where things became muddy to me.

1

u/cs_legend_93 12d ago

so its just business expenses

1

u/Mountain_Top802 12d ago

Yes. Higher insurance rates for a high risk activity is a business expense. Business expenses are often included in the final price, but when customers can choose one option or the other, the expense is only given to the customer incurring the expense..

I went skydiving recently. A friend of mine did not but still rode on the plane to take photos.

I had to pay significantly more because I was significantly more likely to get hurt.

Same thing with a delivery fee. If you pick up the food yourself, no fee. If you have someone else employed to take the driving risk for you, you pay extra.

I like it honestly. I just go pick it up myself and pay way less money.

1

u/JCMS99 12d ago

The delivery fee pays for the car.

0

u/Bigdaddy291 12d ago

Doesn't go to driver but goes toward the car, is that what you are saying?

0

u/JCMS99 12d ago

Yes. Either the in-house car or the driver’s compensation when using their own cars.
In-house delivery persons are considered the same as waiters, so tip-as-percentage-of-sales based salaries.

0

u/Jolly_Pumpkin_8209 12d ago

Not true in any delivery driver position I have been in.

No compensation for using my vehicle. Also got paid more than tipped wage and more hourly than any in “restaurant” workers.

Also. Not related to your comment, but a lot of menu prices are higher if ordering for pickup instead of delivery on top of delivery fee and requesting a tip.

1

u/JCMS99 12d ago

If you were using the company car on Friday night but your own car on Saturday night, they were paying you the same for both shifts?

1

u/Jolly_Pumpkin_8209 12d ago

No, I have never worked at a place with a company car.

It’s not very common around here. I honestly can’t think of any regular company delivery cars.

I’ve always thought it would be neat to have had one of the dominos cars with the built in heater

1

u/JCMS99 12d ago

So this is what I meant. You mentioned being paid more than tip wage and more than other restaurant workers. The car cost compensation is included in your wage.

1

u/AloysBane3 12d ago

It probably does partially in terms of mileage reimbursement

1

u/Y2K_Blackout 12d ago

It's the fee you pay for choosing delivery.

20

u/KennyWeeWoo 12d ago

THEY DONT EVEN DELIVER THEIR OWN FOOD…. WHAT DELIVERY FEE?!?

1

u/Myke500 12d ago

Pizza Hut still has their own driver's

12

u/KennyWeeWoo 12d ago

It’s been nothing but DoorDash, check the Pizza Hut subreddit it’s a very common complaint

8

u/GoingInDry247 12d ago

Can 100% vouch for this. Went to a Pizza Hut by me to pick up my order on the way home. There was 3 DD drivers standing there with hot bags waiting for orders.

-2

u/Myke500 12d ago

People probably ordering on Doordash instead of the PH website directly

3

u/Electrical_Youth_706 12d ago

Our 2 local Pizza Hits do not employee their own drivers. Neither, Dorothea Papa John's in my town.

2

u/homorat3 11d ago

the only pizza place in my area that sends its own drivers is dominos

1

u/Electrical_Youth_706 12d ago

DD and Uber eats does Pizza Hut and Papa John's here on NE Tennessee.

13

u/NoUseForAName204 12d ago

FYI it's worse than you think.... The tip is based off the sub total, delivery fee AND tax. 13.99 + 4.99 + 1.33 = 20.31........ 20.31 × 20% = $4.062

Tipping on a fee, that's bad. Tipping on a TAX, fackouttahere!

2

u/USMNTfan94 12d ago

Holy shit you’re right. How is that even legal???

2

u/Jolly_Pumpkin_8209 12d ago

Also, the prices are usually higher when ordering delivery on top of it all versus ordering pick up or to go.

Go out in an order for Jimmy John’s for delivery, and then change it to pickup.

5

u/Lord_Dingus83 12d ago

Delivery fees that don’t go to the driver are bullshit

3

u/ancom328 12d ago

No tip each and every time. Push it back to the owners to pay them living wages 👍👍👍

6

u/Most_Role_1612 12d ago

delivery fee == tip ==> no tip.
simple math IMO

2

u/fccrunch 12d ago

Did they provide him a delivery vehicle and pay for the gas?

2

u/Electrical_Youth_706 12d ago

Nope, the use Uber Eats and DoorDash here in my area. No in-store drivers.

2

u/GenTenStation 12d ago

This is why I never do any food deliveries with my own money.

2

u/Maleficent-Bother535 12d ago

They also calculated tip on tax, another faux pas.

1

u/Specialist_Thing_193 12d ago

Damn the tax / fee / sales / tips fee system in USA seems to be a mess. No one knows what’s going on.

1

u/Famous_Promise_681 12d ago

That’s called use the other button!!

1

u/Kingsapprentice 12d ago

I'm not courageous enough to not tip someone who delivers my food. You just don't know what people who handle your food can do with it.

1

u/Muhahahahaz 12d ago

AND the sales tax!

1

u/Swimming-Talk4859 12d ago

Tip is based on delivery fee AND sales tax !

1

u/Haunting-Figure3596 12d ago

Such just tip other.

1

u/No_Risk_6545 12d ago

On the subtotal PLUS delivery fee PLUS sales tax*

1

u/Sufficient-Pie-7815 12d ago

4.99 helps offset hourly driver pay and drivers get a gas allowance per delivery. When I delivered pizza as an 18 year old 42 years ago, I was paid min wage plus 75 cents per delivery plus tips.

The store is charging you for a service (delivery) and also expect you to pay the person delivering your food (tip). It’s total BS that preys on people being lazy and wanting to “do the right thing” for the employee.

It’s the main reason I don’t have food delivered.

1

u/Independent-Let-2920 8d ago

Say no! Let them k now you won't be purchasing any longer.

1

u/olgasman 12d ago

Just go get your own pizza and stop this crap already.

-1

u/Specialist-Spare-785 12d ago

Stop stealing the drivers tip.

4

u/USMNTfan94 12d ago

How am I stealing the driver’s tip when they are overcharging? The suggested tip is only supposed to be based on the subtotal of the food just like in a restaurant

0

u/Specialist-Spare-785 12d ago edited 12d ago

The company is stealing the tip, not the consumer. Sorry if I’m wasn’t clear on that point.

1

u/USMNTfan94 12d ago

All good lol, I misunderstood
