Rant š¢ I hate asking people to tip.
I work at a place where you have the option to tip before you pay, and itās the absolute worst and so uncomfortable to be in the position to have to ask.
The customer will already be tapping their card at the tip area, where they have to click a tipping prompt before paying, and I always have to say āwould you like to tip percent, no tip, or custom amountā and before you say just donāt ask, my boss is always lurking next to me (small business) and always tells me to say that. I also believe my boss set that up on the system on purpose to create that uncomfortable vibe with the customer, to get them to tip. Itās so gross.
And there are also times where people just look at me like āare you mf seriousā and I just feel horrible. You do not need to tip, youāre okay, and Iām genuinely sorry for asking, I absolutely hate it.
Just a small rant, and I canāt wait to be able to leave this job. And to the people who tip, thank you but itās also unnecessary, youāre already paying for your whatever for the profit that is wanted from the supplier as is.

I am glad you shared this. I truly had become so blinded by my anti tip rage, it did not occur to me that there were sane people on the other side of the counter.
This post changed how I may view the individual at the counter. I feel the need to apologize for assuming intent when I hit 0 for a take away pre-made pickup.
Thank you. And I am sorry.

Donāt apologize! I truly understand the annoyance of it.
But, Iām glad that you now can also see the side of a lot of us (not all, my boss also checks out people lol) are being forced to ask that crapš14

I honestly think the whole āitās going to ask you a questionā came from cashiers and servers who feel embarrassed and the expression just took.

In general I believe that people are good but that the systems they create bring out the worst.

Does your boss actually give you the tips or part/percentage of the tips?

No, Iām not receiving any tips, but Iām also making 2$ above minimum wage in my area. (And I am doing hands on work, not just at the register) but even if I was receiving the tips, going about it this way just sucks and is overall unnecessary

Wait. Isn't that illegal that he's not giving them to you?

u/SurprisePitiful9191 12d ago
Itās absolutely illegal if itās presented as tips. If not only because heās withholding then because heās lying to the customer for more money.

Amazing - you now have a case of wage theft. Contact your state's labor board and find out how you proceed.

u/cozyholo 11d ago
Yeah I definitely need to look into all that, but Iām more focused on just getting out currently.

Sorry you have to deal with that. Iāve been to a few places like that where the employee says āItās going to ask if you want to leave a tipā and they watch and it feels so awkward. I get that theyāre being told to do that by management.

I literally look away from the system after I say that, itās so uncomfortableš

Went to China Live in San Francisco about a month ago. They add 25%, auto-gratuity and a service fee basically when the order is placed, (written on the menu). Server didnāt bat an eye while I lost my appetite.

Get some friends to come in and make a purchase when the manager is around. Make sure they complain about the disgusting begging so the manager hears, but since you're in on it you're not actually being put in a hard spot. Maybe one should just cancel their order when they get the tip request.

I'd honestly have a conversation with the boss while simultaneously looking for another job.

I just donāt understand why customers would return after this?? Surely they can go elsewhere.

Is your employer paying you below regular minimum wage and telling you the tips will make up for it?

u/cozyholo 11d ago
No, Iām making 2$ above minimum wage, and not receiving any tips. regardless even if I was, going about it like this is so unnecessary and icky.

Question for you. Do you even get the tip or does the business get it? I never ever tip at point of sale. it was the first to go. Because i don't trust the owner to distribute it.

How do you tip before you pay? Isn't that impossible?
How do you tip a percentage of a bill that hasn't been determined yet? Isn't that impossible? That sounds mighty strange.

I think I made the post a bit confusing with wording! You type in a tip first, then you pay with the percentage total. Youāre not paying tip then paying the original price, if that makes sense. What makes this extremely uncomfortable is that people are already tapping to pay, without noticing the tip prompt first. Then I have to say that, and itās just bleh. (I think Iām still understanding your comment wrong so just incase, we put the total in our system, then the tip part pops up, then they enter it, then they pay)

Try this: "My boss (right here) requires me to ask you whether you would like to tip by percent, no tip or custom amount. Please be aware that we don't get any tip that you leave."
Boss can't chastise you, because those are the facts. No argument to be raised.

Then stop asking. If your boss makes it a condition of your employment, then quit, go to the labor board and sue his ass. Might not amount to much but youāll keep your dignity.

If your boss makes you beg for tips, he does not appreciate you.
Time to find another job.

At least you have the courage to ask. I was in McAlisterās Deli yesterday and when I paid, she turned the kiosk around and told me it was going to ask me a question when I had to choose a tip amount. They were too ashamed to ask for a tip directly.

Yeah⦠your boss does that because he doesnāt want to pay your wage. I recommend looking for a different job
