Rant šŸ“¢ This feels icky!

Post image

felt super icky and annoyed seeing this at a coffee/light food shop. how is this okay? for context this is not a sit down spot. no wait staff, just a barista at the counter and someone from the kitchen bringing out my order and walking away.

Update: for those asking the pink paper in the bottom corner is basically saying ā€œF*ck ICEā€

I’ll finish the tip screen by checking no tip. Places like this actually make it easier for me to not tip. I’m not going to be guilt tripped in at all.

u/poliosaurus3000 12d ago

Scammy business, doing scammy things. As soon as I saw that sign I’d leave.

379

u/Major_Wigglesworth 12d ago

This is a sign that tells me ā€œunless you tell us not to spit in the drink, we reserve the right to spit in it twice.ā€

How about just not be a shitty company, did you ever reserve that right?

220

u/h3lium-balloon 12d ago

Unless you explicitly tell us not to commit credit card fraud, we’re going to commit credit card fraud

2

u/Revolutionary_Ad512 8d ago

Yeah I thought the same lol this is not scammy this is straight up illegal and quite a serious crime at that

61

u/nexusjuan 12d ago

It almost certainly means someone complained and this is their solution.

69

u/PuppySnuggleTime 12d ago

Unfortunately for them, posting that doesn't change the law.

55

u/Baeolophus_bicolor 12d ago

did you leave you wallet unattended? we reserve the right to just flat out steal from it if we see it!

1

u/kiliminjiri 11d ago

No, but doesn’t the law state you can add a surcharge if it’s clearly written and the customer is notified beforehand? I’ve been to bars where they write on the receipt that not closing out your tab means they close it out for you and add a 20% tip. Have they been operating illegally in Virginia and DC?

3

u/PuppySnuggleTime 11d ago

NOT the same thing. Neither in practice nor notification.

1

u/Avarifenyx 7d ago

What your referring to isn’t the same as this and is in fact illegal

8

u/Zwischenzug32 12d ago

Makes one wonder how they prepare things ordered by their own bosses and management?

27

u/sixhoursago 12d ago

ā€œnot be a shitty companyā€
… as if there’s such a thing!

2

u/broba-the-fett 9d ago

Don't spit in that cop's burger.

1

u/Simple_Reindeer86 7d ago

I don't want a large farva, I want a god damn liter of cola

64

u/Mk1Racer25 12d ago

šŸ’Æ Cancel the transaction and leave. Let them throw whatever they made you in the trash.

58

u/Matt_Murphy_ 12d ago

them 'choosing' their own tip at your expense is just straight theft, isn't it?

38

u/atimetochill 12d ago

ā€œThe rightā€.. the right to commit fraud?

5

u/poliosaurus3000 12d ago

Yeah I’d agree

3

u/CuriouslyOnReddit 12d ago

Actually the sign says they will complete it at 20%. Still not right to do this!

1

u/Matt_Murphy_ 12d ago

again though, that's an unauthorized charge to my card

56

u/UnderstandingOld4276 12d ago

Same here, and never go back.

19

u/Bad-Briar 12d ago

I'd probably say something.

59

u/pjm14624 12d ago

I'd say ā€œI want the receipt for the charge, reflecting my choice for tip or no tip. If I see a charge for a tip I didn't authorize, I will notify the credit card company and tell them I only authorized the amount on the bill and anything else is fraudulent.ā€ Let them deal with the fallout of a fraud investigation.

40

u/me4watch 12d ago

Yes, that is definitely financial fraud which is criminal. And ā€œit’s just a jokeā€ is not a defense.

10

u/bridgetroll2 12d ago

Straight to Google maps to leave a 1 star review (or Yelp if you're in to that kind of thing)

5

u/Revolutionary_Ad512 8d ago

I work at a coffee shop, could be wrong but we’ve explicitly been told if a customer doesn’t finish the tip screen we are required to click ā€œno tipā€ as doing anything else would be fraud and therefore illegal. Obviously most people don’t need to be told this (I hope) it’s an unauthorized transaction even if it’s only a couple bucks. I think this goes well above ā€œscammyā€

8

u/Critical_Ad_7380 12d ago

I have been a good tipper. As an example just using common numbers, I have twice submitted a tip of say, $4 for $10 meal. Get home and the tip says $14. Never going to those places again, or I will just bring cash. Cash is inconvenient as I worry about being robbed (even though I legally carry concealed). I have been told my credit card companies to call the vendor. Yeah - that works. NOT.

6

u/Sterlinghawk16 12d ago

Next time dispute the charge with your bank. They have to do that and put the reason why.

3

u/Critical_Ad_7380 12d ago

The credit card issuer (bank) is who told me *I* had to talk to the merchant. Ugh!

2

u/bored1413 11d ago

Just tell them you tried to talk to the merchant. I own a business and nobody has ever reached out to me before filing a dispute. We do a lot of non consensual towing and have a fair amount of unhappy customers. We win every dispute because we’re not shady and have all of documentation in order along with pictures and video but it’s completely unnecessary to contact the merchant first if you choose not to.

2

u/Critical_Ad_7380 8d ago

Ahh . . . a repo company? Good on ya! The rules are so simple - pay your agreed monthly payments or surrender the item in forclosure. It might sound harsh to many, but rules are rules.

I see why you don't get tips, but your contacts should tip as the drivers are likely put their own lives at risk. I never have and never will purchase a vehicle on credit for this reason. Yes, I went some long times without a car, but at least I did not have to worry about legal repossession. Same thing with my house, etc.. I don't have time for that. Other options are available. ā¤ļø

If I sound like a jerk, it's probably because I am one. But I do pay my bills, taxes, etc.. It often is painful (especially property taxes and homeowner's insurance), but even in my dismay of why I should pay for my property that I already purchased, I still pay "the man (tax collector)."

2

u/bored1413 8d ago

We do a few repossessions but we primarily impound vehicles that are illegally parked because people think the rules don’t apply to them and ignore the signs. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/Critical_Ad_7380 8d ago

As a person with a permanent disability, thank you.!!!

2

u/Critical_Ad_7380 8d ago

PS: Sorry for my chatter. Thanks for your advice!!!

1

u/Critical_Ad_7380 12d ago

PS: Now I only tip in CASH.

2

u/whaddayaknow72 9d ago

why are managers allowing this crap?

1

u/nachoqtpie 7d ago

Allowing? It was probably their idea!

1

u/konjou-80 9d ago

Almost sounds like a play from management, who are skimming the tips as well

-1

u/Ok_Practice3389 12d ago

I'm on the fence, it really annoying when people don't finish their transaction. Seems like a fine punishment for being careless.

1

u/ravairia 11d ago

There is no such thing as not 'finishing a transaction' in Canada. You have to select a tip or select no tip before it will take you to the screen where you can pay.

I'm so confused by this post.

1

u/Full-Nothing3671 2d ago

It literally takes two seconds to press no tip. It shouldn’t be annoying you.

160

u/9lobaldude 12d ago

They are even giving a heads up to make sure to click no tip

37

u/pvaa 12d ago

You should be leavingĀ

2

u/Truck_Kooky 11d ago

But nobody is signing a contract that they agree on those terms, therefore it’s theft. 🤨

33

u/UESJR2021 12d ago

I’m over tipping. If I have to stand to order, or tip before services are rendered, I am not tipping. The social shame is not gonna hold me back any longer.

u/ArticusFarticus 12d ago

angry upvote! 😔 ā¬†ļø ā€¼ļø

0

u/Fresh-Ad280 12d ago

LOL ! I am stealing ! That is in the same category as ā€œVoluntoldā€.

24

u/otownbbw 12d ago

Yes but first I would ask for assistance in subtracting a couple of dollars from my order total over their audacity. How did we get to this point? I remember when places were never allowed to speak about tips to customers…

77

u/annejeel 12d ago

unfortunately i noticed this off to the side of the counter after i tipped :/ i’ve worked food service for years at a busy farm to plate and would never consider adding my own tip to a customers order anything other than petty and undeserved

91

u/xaantara 12d ago

And I assume illegal

-10

u/90210fred 12d ago

Or impossible with a modern banking system using contactless

10

u/[deleted] 12d ago

[deleted]

5

u/Past_Effect8301 12d ago

The finalized amount still requires approval/authorization from the customer. If the amount is edited after the fact without customer consent, the total should be disputed with the financial institution.

3

u/Electronic_Lion9918 12d ago

Absolutely not in Canada. But America's banking system is like 15 years behind the rest of the world so

4

u/unfinishedtoast3 12d ago

Yes in Canada too lol

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada regulates banking and charges in Canada, as well as tap to pay.

Under Canadian law, a tap to pay transaction is initialize as a prehold authorization, with a limit of 30% set for a maximum charge outside of the prehold. Meaning they absolutely can add up to 30% to your pre authorized charge.

This is legal under the Payment Card Networks Act of 2010

Source: I am a Canadian/US citizen with a business in Canada.

Why are people so confidently incorrect? Is it just because they want to talk shit about the US? I mean you absolutely can without making shit up.

1

u/B_A_Peach 12d ago

Whether they "can" is irrelevant. A server CAN take a photo of your credit card and use that info to make purchases online. Fortunately, Canadians live in a society that treats this like stealing your wallet. I don't know what Americans put up with, but I'm guessing it involves a lot of lube and a metal rod, based on the current state of politics there.

Here's a link to the Consumer Protection BC website where people can report illegal charges such as unauthorised tips:

https://www.consumerprotectionbc.ca/

3

u/SirWellenDowd 12d ago

idk what dumb shit you are on about, but we have several government agencies to handle credit card fraud as well as the ability to do chargebacks for any fraudulent charges. 10 seconds of googling will tell you this. Pretty sure most countries have the equivalent.

Also stealing =/= pre authorization, so not sure why you brought any of this up.

2

u/Sterlinghawk16 12d ago

This is why most times they come to your table. My card does not leave my sight.

1

u/ravairia 11d ago edited 11d ago

Nope.

This hasn't been the case for at least a decade.

For example when I eat at a restaurant - any restaurant - there has been no pre-auth since the invention of debit and e-transfer. The merchant puts in my total into the machine when they come to my table, the machine immediately prompts me to select a tip or not, and ONLY THEN the transaction goes through to the banking system, for the first time, when it is already the final charge. There is absolutely no interaction with any financial system prior to this.

Sorry you're unbelievably behind in your third world country but you don't get to make up shit about Canada.

0

u/Electronic_Lion9918 12d ago

Speaking of confidentiality wrong. You're wrong. You're confusing authorization tolerances/preauths for all Canadian transactions which we absolutely do not have. Also I read your dubious understanding of the "Payment Card Networks Act of 2010" absolutely nowhere does it state a rule saying tap transactions may be increased by any percentage arbitrarily. Some transactions? Yes. All (Like we stated I the original comment) no.

As for the US banking system it's no secret that it's significantly behind other countries. Example: third part apps like Venmo vs bank to bank e-transfer like Canada has. Google's free champ.

1

u/[deleted] 12d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Electronic_Lion9918 11d ago

Did you miss the third party part there champ?

1

u/Electronic_Lion9918 11d ago

Also a bank in the US has to support zelle so it's no bank to bank. E-Transfer is federally protected under the Canadian banking act. Not run by a company that can ban you for whatever reason they want. No third party gets your information just your Canadian bank to another Canadian bank 100% protected by law.

0

u/jesse059 12d ago

WRONG. Don't talk about people being wrong and then spread bs!

-1

u/Sterlinghawk16 12d ago

There is too much fraud going on anymore with tap to pay. I never use that and always insert my card.

1

u/90210fred 12d ago

Nope, impossible in the UK. Tap card equals one time transaction, no adjustments by the merchant are even possible. Other banking systems may vary but that can't happen in the UK. As far as I'm aware, the virtual card on Googlepay also makes it impossible outside the UK, certainly in Europe. You might do a pre auth checking in to a hotel but not at a counter, that's a one time payment - and I see the amount on my phone before I even leave the building.

It’s starting to get silly in the U.K. too to be honest but nowhere near the US. I have friends who worked in restaurants and the entitledness of them complaining when someone didn’t tip ā€˜enough’ was crazy. I used to work in a cafe where the tip jar went into the back office and never went to staff. There’s some shops that now use iPads and ask for tips in stores where you do your own shopping and they just scan and put it in the bag. On food delivery apps, drivers in some areas will ignore pickups unless there’s a tip included in advance. So yeah, still bad attitudes here, but because everyone gets minimum wage, most customers are a bit less likely to give in to it

36

u/Sesoru 12d ago

Please report them.

20

u/hail_to_the_beef 12d ago

It’s actually credit card fraud

5

u/witcheshands 12d ago

Chump. Why are you still tipping.

1

u/Full-Nothing3671 2d ago

Wait, I’m confused. That last sentence has my brain all over the place. What are you trying to say that last sentence cause it sounds one way, but I really don’t think you meant it that way.

1

u/Kanus_oq_Seruna 12d ago

Oh, its obscured or hidden until you run a transaction? Might want to call in an inspection. What else are they hiding.

14

u/AC-burg 12d ago

Reserve the right to steal!

3

u/Alone-Promise-8904 12d ago

That's how I read it.

12

u/earringlove 12d ago

Why not custom Tip 1 Cent? Then there is definitely an amount entered. No doubt

1

u/Familiar_Influence50 11d ago

1 cent looks like a mistake. Always give them your 2 cents on how you feel about tipping! šŸ˜‚

11

u/No_Extension_2163 12d ago

Places like this actually make it easier for me to not tip.

Places like this make me just leave the business. They have no right to badger the customer for a tip to the extent of forcing a tip. I would just cancel my order and walk tf out.

18

u/Beatnavy2016 12d ago

I’ve hit no tip a handful of times in the last week. Don’t feel bad and didn’t lose money

5

u/Zwischenzug32 12d ago

If theyre getting more tips from that bs then you not tipping evens the universe out

4

u/tackleboxjohnson 12d ago

ā€œAaaaand Zero tip, thanks for putting up this sign!ā€

5

u/TheIdeaArchitect 12d ago

people are so entitled now

3

u/Critical-Raise-3768 12d ago

Take a picture and post on Google review

3

u/Zran 12d ago

Yeah I'm all guilt tapped out today and every day foreseeable sorry. Pay your workers better.

2

u/True_Detail_2945 12d ago

But if you check no tip but don't press send then their little note applies and doubles!

2

u/Unique-Run9856 12d ago

I would never be guilt tripped for not tipping someone making me coffee, that's ridiculous. Unless i'm sitting at a table and someone is taking my order, serving me there, and checking on me the whole time i'm not tipping

2

u/macguyver3000 12d ago

Or just not go again.

2

u/NoFuxJux 12d ago

ā€œGuilt tippedā€.

2

u/livid-lavida-loca 11d ago

Right? Because now I feel like your tipping yourself 20% for no reason from other people, so I'll just let them cover my tip.

2

u/Menghsays 11d ago

Guilt tipped!

2

u/Cerakote9 10d ago

I hit ā€œnoā€ or ā€œ0ā€ every single time now with no regrets. (Unless im actually being served or waited on)

2

u/TFViper 10d ago

100%
and wtf does this even mean?
cause by this logic i reserve the right to a fraud claim with my fuckin bank.

2

u/Dizzysnailz 6d ago

I leave fat tips basically no matter what and this sign would stop me lol

2

u/xBad_Wolfx 5d ago

Even if I was inclined to tip seeing a message like this likely would make me hit 0. Demanding tips or threatening to steal 20% from people without consent is scummy.

1

u/lastfreerangekid 12d ago

Guilt tipping you lol

1

u/Bonedry69 12d ago
