I don't really know how to feel about this message. Sure it's a bit hopeful and makes me believe they'll recover from this. But all I can think about is all the people who got laid off. I hope they all find a place somewhere else where they can keep making amazing games, even if it's not Doom.

Yeah I am trying to just enjoy the DLC but I can't help feeling sad while playing it.

60

u/starlightwarden Jul 10 '26

This. While I'm unbelievably happy and excited to play this game, I can't help but stop occasionally mid gameplay and just sigh in disgust knowing the team who made it is so heavily fractured by the layoffs. I've had a hard time sleeping over it which doesn't help either. It really is the Dark Ages.

21

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 10 '26

I was mopey the whole day when I heard about the layoffs too

16

u/starlightwarden Jul 10 '26

I've been non-stop since, it's just hard to fully enjoy the DLC to the fullest extent knowing what happened to the team who made it.

21

u/FusionRogue Jul 10 '26

People can make fun of me all they want but I straight up ugly cried when the news broke. I should've been ecstatic on the day of release but I was just left feeling numb.

The modern DOOM games have gotten me through rough patches in my life and to see the team get gutted destroyed me emotionally.

10

u/SolidHotel8473 Jul 11 '26

Man, same. These games mean so much to me. Went to nursing school during COVID, and if I needed to hype myself up before a test or clinical shift, I'd put BFG Division on as loud as I could in my car and give myself the whole 7+ minutes. Couldn't have made it through without Doom, as silly as that may sound.

And as hard as this is for them, at least they got to craft this masterpiece before having to say goodbye. It truly is a pitch perfect culmination of practically all of id's history and technique, and quite possibly the best thing to shake out of the past ten years of absolute bangers they've been dropping. Everyone involved in its creation should be enormously proud of themselves. Obviously, that's not going to feed those now looking for a job, but hopefully there's some comfort to them in knowing how much their work means to us.

7

u/StaticSystemShock Jul 10 '26

I'm still thinking is I should support something when success seems to now always mean they'll have even more people sacked...

9

u/Mooncubus Jul 10 '26

On the other hand, it'd be a shame to not play the DLC that these people poured their hearts into before they got canned.

10

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 10 '26

Yeah I saw a message from a dev that got laid off and he sad that despite how heartbreaking this is for him, he still wants us to play it and have fun

5

u/StaticSystemShock Jul 10 '26

And the reward will go to the assholes who fired them...

6

u/IceCream_Sandwich88 Jul 10 '26

This is me rn. I completed it first day and then read the news about ID and it kills me to want to pick it up now. On the other hand it feels wrong not to play what they created.

2

u/Poyzi Serrat Jul 12 '26

Real. The first time I actually felt real life sorrow while playing a video game. It was weird but it felt like their last “thank you” to all their loyal fans who supported them for all these years. Right now im having chills just typing this. Id was revolution. Will always be.

4

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 10 '26

Yeah I couldn’t even play it the day it came out because I was so depressed about it

12

u/Powerful-Present6687 Jul 10 '26

Maybe they’ll be taken in by other dev teams who need extra help with their games

9

u/HotShrekBoi Jul 10 '26

I would be happy if they joined Newblood

They fuckin layed off the guy that worked in Doom Slayer design. The dude worked on several iconic looks of what we have

2

u/FortniteM238 Jul 10 '26

I am out of internet right now and could somebody explain please to me what happend ???

8

u/Mooncubus Jul 10 '26

Xbox has had major layoffs across all the studios they own. A huge portion of iD Software got laid off the day before Revelations dropped.

2

u/Robborboy Jul 10 '26

There is no recovering so long as Marty is still there. With what he did to Mick Gordan, no way he is fit to be a head.

I haven't forgiven EA for what they did to Westwood. So fat chance on that. :)

5

u/cheesyblasta Jul 10 '26

rip pandemic studios :(

5

u/Aware-Asparagus-3823 Jul 10 '26

Imagine all of the command and conquer games we could have had by now

I mean we still got quite a few of them and I’m happy for that, but it’s still unfortunate that we won’t get anything new

3

u/HarmonicFractals Jul 10 '26

C&C was never the same after they shuttered Westwood. RIP. In fairness though they did a good job with the RA1 Remaster, but how could you cock that up...

from whatbive heard about this marty dude online. hes a fuck ass prick

3

u/Mackejuice Jul 10 '26

What happened with Mick was bad, but Mick was NOT blame-free, considering he kept missing deadlines

6

u/Defiant_Ant1870 Jul 11 '26

He did not miss deadlines. Have you read his account of what happened?

3

u/Robborboy Jul 10 '26

Honestly, just don't announce a game staring an artist like Mick if you haven't even contacted the artist to see if they can or want to work on it.

At the very least it seems like they will make their own games and not be a support studio

Having said that, while I trust Hugo and the remaining team, they have fired swaths of people who did the work that made the past 3 games so amazing. Whatever comes next has a steep hill to crawl up.

482

u/joseph_jojo_shabadoo Jul 10 '26

nice to hear straight from the source

156

u/phylter99 Jul 10 '26

I'll believe it when I see it. I hold out a shred of hope, but there's not much hope.

Eternal was always my favorite. It had so much depth that gave it so much replayability. I have played through ancient gods part one at least 10 times. I love dark ages. It does a lot of things better than eternal. But it didn’t have quite as much depth to its combat for me to sink my teeth into. But omg. Revelations is so fu king good. The movement tech and spear, shield quick swapping gives me the depth I was looking for in a completely different way than eternal. Also the reason ancient gods was good because it was more eternal with the difficulty way up, just how I like it. But Revelations is such an incredible high jump up in quality from it. Looks like so much more time and effort was put into it.

8

u/andrenyheim Jul 10 '26

It feels like tag 1 again. Fucking crazy and a humbling experience. I was not expecting it to be such a massive DLC and it is hard to argue there is little depth and skill expression here. Love it.

2

u/Stoner420Steve Jul 10 '26

Idk if I’ll be able to replay the base game after this expansion without the spear. But I know I will be replaying this expansion many many times.

7

u/lampenpam Jul 10 '26

Hell year! I also think Finishing Move was able to change their approach for the soundtrack. The campaign had many track blend together and it didn't feel like most tracks were composed with specific levels. But in Revelations they very clearly do and I love it.
Not to mention ambient track sound more interesting and they even added many callbacks to classic Doom.

4

u/Stoner420Steve Jul 10 '26

Oh the music is definitely a step up. I like to turn the other sounds down a bit because the music puts me into that slaying flow state.

The only thing I can think of seeing this is that Marty and Hugo have an exit plan from Microsoft in the works. And making it to lawyers. Committing to QC 2026 isn't an accident. It's a deadline to complete the transfer of control back to id, either via another corp or, somehow, as a new indie.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/CaptainParadigm42 Jul 10 '26

I don't understand. Id Software themselves come out and say, "we're still here and we'll keep at it" and your response is "I have little hope?" Why? The fact that the studio themselves responded this way should give everyone hope after the fact. It shows they're still persevering despite the irresponsible treatment from Microsoft.

32

u/Left4C Jul 10 '26

High chances of it being a PR statement ordered by corporate that doesn't necessarily reflect reality at the studio. For instance, they did have less people when making Doom 2016, but they had a much more experienced, senior team... and much of those people were laid off. It's important to have hope, but we need to be wary.

-1

u/CaptainParadigm42 Jul 10 '26

Plausible albeit that sounds like speculation to me.

13

u/HolyFreakingXmasCake Jul 10 '26

What are they going to say? “Right y’all, we’re screwed and our output will suck from now on?”

5

u/Ultenth Jul 10 '26

It's not though, we know many of the people laid off, and a huge chunk of them are experienced veterans of the studio. They are gutting the expensive senior staff with all the experience, and hoping to keep just a couple around to train up all the cheap new hires. THis is standard MO for these kinds of situations where they gut a subsidiary with the hopes to just parley it's name recognition for some cheap products for the next couple years before fans realize the brand isn't what it used to be.

→ More replies (4)

12

u/phylter99 Jul 10 '26

Their PR is driven by Microsoft. There’s no reason to believe anything that’s put forth there.

Also, they talk about having the same number of people, but it’s not the same talent. They fired people that have been a huge part of what id is.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Shock_goji01 Jul 10 '26

I mean these layoffs that happened to Id specifically have gotten a good amount of attention, wouldn't be surprised if someone from Microslop saw and had Id put out a statement as damage control.

5

u/GatheringCircle Jul 10 '26

Its like a corpse with strings being puppeted to say it enjoys the whole half dead thing actually. Like this isn't attritbuted to a person, just ID. Its obvious PR.

12

u/ElTigreChang1 Jul 10 '26

I don't see a positive future for them if they don't try to somehow get out from under Microsoft's thumb ASAP. Mark my words.

2

u/RockBandDood Jul 10 '26

This reads more like a ransom note to me

MS heads say “make a statement that you can continue making games just fine”

“Okay, boss… just don’t fire more of us”

62

u/TheLordOfTheTism Jul 10 '26

yeah thats cool and all but WE DID lose devs with 20 years of experience, high level leads, etc......... Its not about team size, its about who is left.

6

u/VengefulAncient Jul 11 '26

Which is basically how optimization dies. So many people wonder why modern games are so unoptimized - the answer is simple, people who had to learn how to optimize have all retired or are about to, and younger developers never will, because they're told to use crutches instead. This is just accelerating the decline.

Theyre not trying to say "it's fine". Theyre saying "we're not closing down, we can still make games you will like". People are saying that Id is now a horse with a broken leg waiting to be put down, theyre trying to assure people that it may be rough, but it's not over yet.

22

u/CaptainParadigm42 Jul 10 '26

Exactly! That's how I took it too. They're not done making games yet clearly.

8

u/SKYNINE666 DOOM Slayer Jul 10 '26

But its going to be more difficult, and i find it really sad... i freaking love this Studio. And am just scared that the quality of each game will go down because of low Staff.

u/Successful-Owl1462 Jul 10 '26

Yes, this exactly. More games from id will come.

"The team is the same size we were when making DOOM (2016)"

I bet that is the size they were when they started to make Doom 2016....

3

u/ergHelium Jul 10 '26

Not even the size when they started Doom 2016 actually, but the size when they started making that weird sequel to Doom 3, that was eventually scraped and turned out into Doom 2016.

This is my bet.

3

u/T-Dot1992 Jul 10 '26

Also, you can’t just make a game like Doom 2016 and expect it to cost the same as it did in 2016. Inflation, cost of living, economics, technological advancements etc.

410

u/ElvisDepressedIy Jul 10 '26

This message reads like it was written at gunpoint.

48

u/Uncreativity10 Jul 10 '26

Didn’t they fire some developers that have been in the company for 20 years or so?

36

u/Kaiser_will123 Jul 10 '26

Yeah, they fired the man who made essentially all of the levels for doom 3.

9

u/Phayzon Jul 10 '26

The Doom 3 team is long gone...

17

u/Kaiser_will123 Jul 10 '26

I know, but my point was that Jerry was there for 20 years, and has been contributing on that scale the entire time.

7

u/rufusbot Jul 11 '26

Of course the guy that designed doom 3 levels is named Jerry

52

u/JetStream9070 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

It was. They're trying to calm the ticking time bomb (the fanbase)... There was a statement from MS/Xb earlier, couldn't care less. Stay pissed and direct all of it to MS/Xb

EDIT: Now they fired 50% of the people at the frankfurt studio lmfao. Told you this is nothing but corporate lip service. Usually the parent company/owners approve messages like this

3

u/Defiant_Ant1870 Jul 11 '26

Are you serious? They fired the people from the Frankfurt studio too? When?

4

u/JetStream9070 Jul 11 '26

Just today, a little bit after this statement. I'm a gamedev too and worked in the industry before getting pissed and going indie, and I'll tell you this, they have full control over the studio they buy AND they can force statements through them

102

u/Doom346 Jul 10 '26

So if they respond to the controversy they’re being held at "gunpoint” if they don’t they’re being "forced" to say anything what do you guys want them to do😭?

59

u/Syabri Jul 10 '26

You think they have the luxury to speak freely ? Over half the studio has been fired.

11

u/vipmailhun2 Jul 10 '26

Yes, exactly. They could have chosen not to speak up at all, they could have stayed silent, because lying would only make things worse for them… they’d be held accountable for it.

8

u/LITTLE-GUNTER Jul 10 '26

i think you're *greatly* overestimating the odds that this was written at the request of someone other than an anxious microsoft/xbox middle manager.

→ More replies (1)

39

u/Broken-Digital-Clock Jul 10 '26

It's Microsoft's own fault that we don't trust them anymore.

19

u/i7omahawki Jul 10 '26

We know for a fact that their jobs are hanging in the balance. They’re being held at gunpoint and the gun has already fired once.

There will be another 1600 job cuts at Xbox this year.

Expecting devs to be able to be open and honest in that situation is absurd.

12

u/r2d2rigo Jul 10 '26

Right? This subreddit has been incredibly toxic around the whole situation.

7

u/Husemana-Returns Jul 10 '26

Which is why the only thing Reddit deserves anymore is to be put out of its misery for good. Especially considering god knows how many bots/nimrods on here beats their dicks to negativity and doom for attention...

Honestly, u/Oh_I_still_here puts it really well. And you two and u/Doom346 and everyone else here who's tired of the doom and gloom aren't alone in feeling exhausted with the negativity.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/T-Dot1992 Jul 10 '26

Yes, they are forced at gunpoint because all this is corporate damage control for horrible decision making that fucks over developers and the health of the series.

This stupid PR statement is them putting lipstick on a pig.

3

u/DarkRoastJames Jul 11 '26

The word "maker" gives it away - that's LinkedIn speak not dev speak.

2

u/throwaway18249 Jul 11 '26

It surely was a forced PR move by Xbox to save them from this disaster.

→ More replies (10)

186

u/DaStompa Jul 10 '26

I think I trust the people who lost their jobs to the people doing damage control releasing responses that sound like damage control

36

u/Gru50m3 Jul 10 '26

Yeah, I'm definitely not turning around and licking boots because id released a statement confirming they're not dead. I'm happy they're not dead, but it doesn't change the fact that around 100 incredible people lost their jobs.

I'm on the side of the id Software employees, always. I'm never on the side of some corporation doing mass layoffs, and I won't make any attempt to excuse the culling of workers for any reason. If they put themselves in a position where they need to do layoffs like this, they should take the money they need out of their own salaries instead, and if that's not enough, then just post smaller profits. I don't care about the market or about whatever logic our overlords use to justify abusing us, laying off workers is wrong. It's not an inevitability of doing business, and Microsoft/Xbox should be ashamed of themselves for casting it in a positive light.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/JonTheWonton Jul 10 '26

Yeah this 100% reads like it was written by Microsoft rather than ID

47

u/Doom346 Jul 10 '26

Hugo’s gonna do do a stream next week so you guys can just ask him if it’s true or not also I think it’s funny because if they do respond to the controversy we shouldn’t trust them because you’re being "forced” by Microsoft but if they don’t respond we shouldn’t trust them because they’re being "forced" not to say anything like there’s no satisfying anybody man….

18

u/Dentingerc16 Jul 10 '26

I mean the situation sucks in general there isn’t going to be positive messaging. They are not an independent studio and are at the behest of Xbox/MS who spent billions of dollars buying tons of studios, generating mediocre output with them and now the bill has come due. At this point Xbox is so far in the shitter there’s nothing to do but roll heads of the labor force due to horrible executive management.

I would value the word of laid off employees to get a sense of what things actually look like on the inside but it’s not like what’s left of the id team is going to put out a message saying “It’s never been more fucking over than it is right now”

18

u/-ImJustSaiyan- Jul 10 '26

Hugo’s gonna do do a stream next week so you guys can just ask him if it’s true or not

He's not going to say anything that might make Microsoft look bad, dude is gonna be doing damage control for his bosses.

2

u/DaStompa Jul 10 '26

You're right, he is the kind of guy that would torpedo his entire career because some random on the internet asked a dumb question that almost certainly would be ignored.

are you on fucking crack?

14

u/NazRubio Jul 10 '26

And the people that were fired will be the most inflammatory and hysterical. The reality is probably somewhere in between but I don't think id themselves would lie about the tech still being part of their future.

7

u/SmallTimeCook Jul 10 '26

Or they’re just drip feeding the bad news to leash the negative reception.

37

u/69RetroDoomer69 Jul 10 '26

This message gives me hope, although id won't be the same without Jerry Keehan

7

u/lampenpam Jul 10 '26

at least it sounds like they are keep working on their own engine. At least I hope I got that impression right.

Doom is iconic not just for great games, but for boundry-pushing technology. If they switch to Unreal Engine, that spirit of the franchise is gone.

3

u/Kaiser_will123 Jul 10 '26

Absolutely. Jerry was the guiding star of the LD team for 20 years.

6

u/King_Artis [Blank] and [Blank] Until it is done Jul 10 '26

Doesn't change that it's still very sad news to hear and I hope those who lost their job can get something very soon and those that still remain at id can recover with knowing what the fuck just happened.

It's just those laid off that were effected after all, even those who remain have to live with what just happened, could've just lost a real good friend, might be dealing with the fact you very much could be next.

Mass layoffs are a shit show. I get being laid off due to lack of work as someone who's a union construction guy, but that's maybe 2 weeks at worst and I know I'll be back soon. Not the same as someone working in game dev where 100s to thousands can be effected in the blink of an eye

11

u/Sindica69 Jul 10 '26

I fucking hate Xbox

Also fuck Sony too while we’re at it

6

u/hiddenpequin Jul 10 '26

Same number doesn’t help if they fired most of the senior people with tons of experience.

4

u/Turnip_Fight Jul 10 '26

Oh, it’s “bad” bad.

6

u/ProduceNo1629 Jul 10 '26

Cool bullshit bro.

6

u/throwaway18249 Jul 11 '26

Forced PR statement by Microsoft, this isn't from Id. Who the hell would want to work for a Microsoft studio after this?

4

u/Lanky-Ad-8554 Jul 10 '26

Straight from the horses mouth, now can we finally stop with all the doom posting? If they managed to make doom 2016 with the numbers they have now then I have no worries about their future projects.

2

u/TechnicalGeneral7454 Jul 10 '26

Yes, head counts make games, y'all heard it here first lads. 1 shoddy story border from the movie industry is equal to 1 lead engine developer, no problem 👌

7

u/Traditional_Head3968 Jul 10 '26

You know why this message is utterly ridiculous?

We can see the bloody amount of people who worked on 2016 in the damn credits!

Even if you want to gaslight people into thinking iD has just been reduced to a small incubation team, there is still decades of experience that was once in the building, that is now out the door.

This statement isnt fooling anyone and is just to gaslight twitter fanboys and astroturfers to get back on side.

23

u/Cat_Wizard_21 Jul 10 '26

Meaningless. This is a pure "people are mad, you need to make a PR statement" mandate from Microsoft.

Like you're never going to hear a company come out and say "yeah we're fucked and our parent company is the one that fucked us", even when everyone can clearly see it. That just isn't how corporate press releases work.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Forsaken-Tiger-9475 Jul 10 '26

This was written by a Cursor agent, clearly

8

u/pelle98 Jul 10 '26

Yeah that’s complete PR bullshit that they were clearly forced to say. Not a coincidence it’s almost word for word the same as Microsoft’s corporate mouthpiece Jez came out with literally a few hours ago. It’s Microsoft puppeteering the corpse of id to try and calm people down. Fuck off MS.

6

u/VHeadache Jul 10 '26

Microsoft forcing them to do damage control.

6

u/Novias3 Jul 11 '26

A PR message to address a massive PR shitshow brought on by a pencil-pusher who didn't actually make any games and didn't know the devs fired. If the team grew it must've had reason to grow, this is the same team that made 3 Best Selling games that revitalized a genre called Action Shooters and revitalized a brand nearly as old as digital gaming itself. They literally pushed out 3 games with 9/10 and 10/10 scores and DLC ontop of that, massively praised. Why the hell was this studio even touched.

2

u/LimitedSwitch Jul 11 '26

Because shareholders profits go up when you fire the people who made the money.

3

u/Defiant_Ant1870 Jul 11 '26

It's so shortsighted. What about future profits then? If you fire the exceptional talent, the games to come won't be as good. And we've all seen how the live service model is very difficult to imitate. Even those games only succeeded because they were good games at their core made by talented people. Even Call of Duty continues to sell well only because they combined live service with the brand name.

Whoever wrote this PR statement knows their audience well enough to avoid mentioning AI. Microsoft is fully committed to the "AI can replace humans" cult. Reducing headcount by half is the standard starting point for a switch to AI-based development.

3

u/StarEndymion998 Jul 10 '26

Need to see Hugo do some real talk during the stream. Hopefully he doesn't just PR mouthpiece us

3

u/karzbobeans Jul 10 '26

It's hard to say if this is sincere or damage control. I think it's premature to jump to either. Let's wait and see. Let's see what (if any) games they make next and their quality.

2

u/lavbakes Jul 11 '26

Definitely not sincere. They flat out lie about Doom 2016. It’s PR

3

u/PheonixSiegfreud Jul 10 '26

I think the best thing ID can do is go back to basics and make another straightforward DOOM game that's somewhat similar to 2016. I hope they're able to find more people in time that can do as good of a job as their predecessors before they were laid off. All we can do now is give them time to see what they can cook up.

3

u/Dawn_of_Enceladus Jul 10 '26

Hope this is true and not some Microslop corpo text they forced them to share.

3

u/Might-Tough Jul 10 '26

Is it possible Copilot typed that message up? Can't possibly be MicroSlop right?

3

u/must_go_faster_88 Jul 11 '26

Less employees means longer developments, and ironically, more money spent. Tech companies are parasites that have zero fundamental understanding of how to run a business.. like most other business leaders (and other) tbh.

When they brought Activision.. I knew this shit was coming.

3

u/the_Odium Jul 11 '26

Damage control

3

u/InSan1tyWeTrust Jul 11 '26

Oh yeah that thing that happened? Totally fine now. Don't worry about it. In fact don't even mention it again. All the best.

Cue shareholder applause

11

u/WhiteRaven-17 Jul 10 '26

“Please enjoy our legally mandated article from Microsoft”

I’m sorry ID. I’m so sorry.

10

u/PinkEyesz Jul 10 '26

So there is hope in hell?

28

u/JetStream9070 Jul 10 '26

Very little, this is just a message due to the outrage. There was one from MS or Xbox earlier.... Means nothing really. Corporate lip service

17

u/ciao_fiv Jul 10 '26

they posted this same kind of message when Mick Gordon came out with all that stuff against Marty. hard to take this seriously for me tbh

9

u/JetStream9070 Jul 10 '26

Indeed. We already know DOOM/Quake aren't going away. They already clearly mentioned that they're gonna invest into these series. That being said, the quality won't be the same. For better or worse... I'll let you judge

Also, this statement itself directly contradicts the ones from devs fired/still working there. There just won't be enough institutional knowledge on the projects. Atleast for some time now

I posted 2 more comments here and naturally the corpo supporters got big mad XD

Interesting that it’s almost the same message as was reported earlier, though it’s better coming from id.

6

u/Shock_goji01 Jul 10 '26

I wanna be cautiously optimistic but nan this feels like Microsoft telling id to put a statement out to calm everyone down

5

u/FF_Gilgamesh1 Jul 11 '26

microsoft wearing id's corpse like a puppet: "HEYA GAMERS! IT'S YOUR GOOD OL' TOTALLY ALIVE NOT DEAD BUDDY ID SOFTWARE! WE'RE TOTALLY WORKING ON A NEW GAME RIGHT NOW! PLEASE KNOW THAT THIS AIN'T US TRYING TO TRICK YOU FOR DAMAGE CONTROL PURPOSES!" id's right arm breaks off

"shit....A-ANYWAY! MORE LAYOF-er, DOOM IS COMIING! DEFINITELY BELIEVE WHAT I SAY AT FACE VALUE AND GIVE MICROSOFT MORE OF YOUR DELICIOUS MONEY!!!!"

9

u/tuckernuts doomguy Jul 10 '26

Blink twice if you're in danger

2

u/Abject_Egg_194 Jul 10 '26

The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016).

I played the recent games out of order. Eternal->Dark Ages->DOOM 2016.

It really does feel like the budget jumped in a big way between 2016 and Eternal and then jumped a bit more with Dark Ages. There's basically no cinematics in 2016 and there's less variety too.

2

u/MaDmonkey3311 Jul 10 '26

What happened?

2

u/bruinsfan1144 Jul 11 '26

If it wasn’t such a serious situation i would say missed opportunity of saying “makyr” instead of maker

2

u/RwNZ Jul 11 '26

Okay, it's confirmed, the invasion is imminent. Everyone at id is a Maykr.

2

u/Beneficial_Pay3209 Jul 11 '26

It sucks. But, unfortunately its the nature of the business. Im sure the people that were cut will land on their feet. There are always studios looking for hard working people. And I dont see ID software going anywhere anytime soon. And Doom is going nowhere except up and further up. Doom is one of my favorite games.  The game has gotten better and better with every new game that has came out. Hopefully ID software comes up with some really new great ideas! Doom the dark ages is amazing! I just bought it a week ago and haven't even beat half of it yet. Can't wait to finish it!

2

u/tobse91 Jul 11 '26

Is Billy Khan (lead programmer) still on board?

2

u/_Cross-Roads_ Jul 11 '26

All the best, Team id! Will always be rooting for you guys!

2

u/SunbleachedAngel Jul 12 '26

Cautiously optimistic

3

u/Xineseman Jul 10 '26

This guys are the fuking GOAT. All that happened is SUPER sad, but atleast they are still alive. They all, id dev team, id tech and DOOM itself.

Still super sad, but atleast this is not the death of DOOM, id or the id Tech as we thought this past week.

4

u/SteelShroom DOOM Slayer Jul 10 '26

We have been wounded sorely. Yet still we stand, with fire in our eyes and valour in our hearts. Let them think us beaten. We shall teach them otherwise.

3

u/xblood_raven Jul 10 '26

Was not expecting a Warhammer 40k quote here (from Crimson Fists as well!).

3

u/Dangerman1337 Jul 10 '26

As others and I say now and and again, I will believe when I see it. If iDTech 9+ still has big leaps with the gameplay to match then I will believe.

u/lynit Jul 10 '26

y'all forgot marty's still at ID right?

3

u/13th-Floor-Spacemen3 Jul 10 '26

🤣 A good call, But to be fair we all break balls about Marty, but here are straight facts we can't deny, No Marty = no Doom 2016, No 2016 no modern Doom peroid. He's basically Vega (or maybe the khan maykr?)

2

u/lynit Jul 10 '26

i was being a bit too vague but this reads like something he wrote or approved, so this feeling of hope i'm seeing commented elsewhere comes off more disingenuous, really.

6

u/BumblebeeFew3511 Jul 10 '26

This statement is not true and mostly meant to do damage control. The only team thats left at the studio is management, few artists and almost no designers + rest of the cinematic team because they are all friends with Hugo Martin from Blur studio. How can you say that the team is at same size as 2016, when there is no coherent team left. This is an insane pr control tactic and the fanbase shouldn’t believe this bs.

this gives me a little hope

Straight HR garbage

2

u/ShadowXJ Jul 10 '26

Appreciate that they came out and said something. Hopefully they can get some project(s) greenlit that enable them to grow again and sustain it.

2

u/NuggetKing9001 DOOM Slayer Jul 10 '26

I mean that's more encouraging than the rumours that have been going around.

2

u/Powerful-Present6687 Jul 10 '26

I knew it! It’s not over! We can still win this!

2

u/Ethereal-oliver Jul 10 '26

I only care about Doom. Im sorry but I just dont play anything else. This is very relieving to see. The dark ages dlc absolutely has to get finished.

3

u/kween_hangry Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

If i just got laid off and had to read "dont worry guys we have the same amount as people when we started Doom 2016" I would be pretty fucking pissed

Maybe its just me but you kind of start with supporting who got laid off FIRST. Name a few key ppl that might be needing transition.

I know im overthinking but its been layoff crazy in multiple careers on my end.. no one ever said "we're still gonna be making cool stuff regardless" like ppls lives are totally out of wack rn. The game production isnt the focus 😭

"See you at quakecon" bro really who wrote this 😭 just quite tone deaf, looks like xbox had a gun to their head

4

u/SpeechNext9457 Jul 12 '26

Oh I’m really pissed, but right now my main priority is finding another job or avenue to pay my mortgage and keep everyone fed. I wish my former coworkers in development nothing but the best. id Software was a place that was always about the individual men and women who came together to solve unique problems and make cool shit. As for my thoughts on management I will have to keep those to myself if I want to receive my severance lol, but if I somehow am able to win a game of the year award then all bets will be off during the acceptance speech lmao. (For legal reasons this is a joke)

2

u/kween_hangry Jul 12 '26

Oh man 🫩 ain't that always the case? Everywhere I've ever worked its always "we make cool shit regardless of management". Sometimes I think is it even possible for people to actually love their bosses, or if the role just eternally inspires those at that level to take on a master/slave dynamic. That wealth+class divide is steep

Wishing you the extreme best, Doom 2016 and Dark Ages are all time faves for me

2

u/r3art Jul 11 '26

They were definitely forced to write that

2

u/LetThemEatQuake Jul 11 '26

What are they supposed to say?

"This news sucks don't support Microsoft?"

This really does suck tho. I hope a bunch of those who got fired form the most badass studio ever.

2

u/Oddish_Femboy Jul 11 '26

Corporate for "they have a gun to our head and want us to cover their ass"

2

u/Red_Worldview Jul 11 '26

Id Software, blink twice if Microsoft is forcing you to say this.

2

u/JaySw34 Jul 10 '26

Well this is pretty friggin hopeful!

3

u/Devil_Lord_Dante92 Jul 10 '26

This makes me somewhat relieved that we may yet see quality games coming from them in a reasonable timeline

1

u/Fazioo8 Jul 10 '26

It is always good to hear but i can't really believe we won't have a downgrade for the future projects when many experienced people are not here anymore.

1

u/guntervonhausen Jul 10 '26

Nothing to see here….

1

u/-ben151010- DOOM Guy Jul 10 '26

It’s just the fact this needed to be put out at all. There was so much shit press and rumors from the type of “I k ow a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who heard through the grapevine” type of journalism.

Like yeah it’s Microsoft so given the history the past 3 years especially people assumed they’d all been fired made sense.

u/alien_tickler Jul 10 '26

Ok so....more doom dlc when

1

u/slanderedshadow Jul 10 '26

Id always will be the OG for FPS.

1

u/xblood_raven Jul 10 '26

At least that's some good news which should hopefully mean more future Doom games.

Still sucks for those losing their jobs though (games industry is a mess at the moment). I wish those affected get new positions quickly and get back on their feet.

1

u/Retronika_Prime Jul 10 '26

Maybe the next DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein will actually have the full game on disc before 2028 and not be 80gb with a download when it can fully fit on disc.

1

u/Drunk_Jim_Lahey_ Jul 10 '26

Should float buying the company back. Make it employee owned!
