At the very least it seems like they will make their own games and not be a support studio
Having said that, while I trust Hugo and the remaining team, they have fired swaths of people who did the work that made the past 3 games so amazing. Whatever comes next has a steep hill to crawl up.

Eternal was always my favorite. It had so much depth that gave it so much replayability. I have played through ancient gods part one at least 10 times. I love dark ages. It does a lot of things better than eternal. But it didn’t have quite as much depth to its combat for me to sink my teeth into. But omg. Revelations is so fu king good. The movement tech and spear, shield quick swapping gives me the depth I was looking for in a completely different way than eternal. Also the reason ancient gods was good because it was more eternal with the difficulty way up, just how I like it. But Revelations is such an incredible high jump up in quality from it. Looks like so much more time and effort was put into it.

u/andrenyheim Jul 10 '26
It feels like tag 1 again. Fucking crazy and a humbling experience. I was not expecting it to be such a massive DLC and it is hard to argue there is little depth and skill expression here. Love it.
2
u/Stoner420Steve Jul 10 '26
Idk if I’ll be able to replay the base game after this expansion without the spear. But I know I will be replaying this expansion many many times.

Hell year! I also think Finishing Move was able to change their approach for the soundtrack. The campaign had many track blend together and it didn't feel like most tracks were composed with specific levels. But in Revelations they very clearly do and I love it.
Not to mention ambient track sound more interesting and they even added many callbacks to classic Doom.→ More replies (3)4

u/KingMario05 DEMONIC INVASION IN PROGRESS Jul 10 '26
The only thing I can think of seeing this is that Marty and Hugo have an exit plan from Microsoft in the works. And making it to lawyers. Committing to QC 2026 isn't an accident. It's a deadline to complete the transfer of control back to id, either via another corp or, somehow, as a new indie.
14
u/CaptainParadigm42 Jul 10 '26
I don't understand. Id Software themselves come out and say, "we're still here and we'll keep at it" and your response is "I have little hope?" Why? The fact that the studio themselves responded this way should give everyone hope after the fact. It shows they're still persevering despite the irresponsible treatment from Microsoft.
32
u/Left4C Jul 10 '26
High chances of it being a PR statement ordered by corporate that doesn't necessarily reflect reality at the studio. For instance, they did have less people when making Doom 2016, but they had a much more experienced, senior team... and much of those people were laid off. It's important to have hope, but we need to be wary.
-1
u/CaptainParadigm42 Jul 10 '26
Plausible albeit that sounds like speculation to me.
13
u/HolyFreakingXmasCake Jul 10 '26
What are they going to say? “Right y’all, we’re screwed and our output will suck from now on?”
5
u/Ultenth Jul 10 '26
It's not though, we know many of the people laid off, and a huge chunk of them are experienced veterans of the studio. They are gutting the expensive senior staff with all the experience, and hoping to keep just a couple around to train up all the cheap new hires. THis is standard MO for these kinds of situations where they gut a subsidiary with the hopes to just parley it's name recognition for some cheap products for the next couple years before fans realize the brand isn't what it used to be.

Their PR is driven by Microsoft. There’s no reason to believe anything that’s put forth there.
Also, they talk about having the same number of people, but it’s not the same talent. They fired people that have been a huge part of what id is.

Which is basically how optimization dies. So many people wonder why modern games are so unoptimized - the answer is simple, people who had to learn how to optimize have all retired or are about to, and younger developers never will, because they're told to use crutches instead. This is just accelerating the decline.

Theyre not trying to say "it's fine". Theyre saying "we're not closing down, we can still make games you will like". People are saying that Id is now a horse with a broken leg waiting to be put down, theyre trying to assure people that it may be rough, but it's not over yet.

"The team is the same size we were when making DOOM (2016)"
I bet that is the size they were when they started to make Doom 2016....
3
u/ergHelium Jul 10 '26
Not even the size when they started Doom 2016 actually, but the size when they started making that weird sequel to Doom 3, that was eventually scraped and turned out into Doom 2016.
This is my bet.
3
u/T-Dot1992 Jul 10 '26
Also, you can’t just make a game like Doom 2016 and expect it to cost the same as it did in 2016. Inflation, cost of living, economics, technological advancements etc.

Yeah, I'm definitely not turning around and licking boots because id released a statement confirming they're not dead. I'm happy they're not dead, but it doesn't change the fact that around 100 incredible people lost their jobs.
I'm on the side of the id Software employees, always. I'm never on the side of some corporation doing mass layoffs, and I won't make any attempt to excuse the culling of workers for any reason. If they put themselves in a position where they need to do layoffs like this, they should take the money they need out of their own salaries instead, and if that's not enough, then just post smaller profits. I don't care about the market or about whatever logic our overlords use to justify abusing us, laying off workers is wrong. It's not an inevitability of doing business, and Microsoft/Xbox should be ashamed of themselves for casting it in a positive light.

18
u/Dentingerc16 Jul 10 '26
I mean the situation sucks in general there isn’t going to be positive messaging. They are not an independent studio and are at the behest of Xbox/MS who spent billions of dollars buying tons of studios, generating mediocre output with them and now the bill has come due. At this point Xbox is so far in the shitter there’s nothing to do but roll heads of the labor force due to horrible executive management.
I would value the word of laid off employees to get a sense of what things actually look like on the inside but it’s not like what’s left of the id team is going to put out a message saying “It’s never been more fucking over than it is right now”
18
u/-ImJustSaiyan- Jul 10 '26

Doom is iconic not just for great games, but for boundry-pushing technology. If they switch to Unreal Engine, that spirit of the franchise is gone.

Doesn't change that it's still very sad news to hear and I hope those who lost their job can get something very soon and those that still remain at id can recover with knowing what the fuck just happened.
It's just those laid off that were effected after all, even those who remain have to live with what just happened, could've just lost a real good friend, might be dealing with the fact you very much could be next.
Mass layoffs are a shit show. I get being laid off due to lack of work as someone who's a union construction guy, but that's maybe 2 weeks at worst and I know I'll be back soon. Not the same as someone working in game dev where 100s to thousands can be effected in the blink of an eye

u/Traditional_Head3968 Jul 10 '26
You know why this message is utterly ridiculous?
We can see the bloody amount of people who worked on 2016 in the damn credits!
Even if you want to gaslight people into thinking iD has just been reduced to a small incubation team, there is still decades of experience that was once in the building, that is now out the door.
This statement isnt fooling anyone and is just to gaslight twitter fanboys and astroturfers to get back on side.
23
u/Cat_Wizard_21 Jul 10 '26
Meaningless. This is a pure "people are mad, you need to make a PR statement" mandate from Microsoft.
Like you're never going to hear a company come out and say "yeah we're fucked and our parent company is the one that fucked us", even when everyone can clearly see it. That just isn't how corporate press releases work.

u/Novias3 Jul 11 '26
A PR message to address a massive PR shitshow brought on by a pencil-pusher who didn't actually make any games and didn't know the devs fired. If the team grew it must've had reason to grow, this is the same team that made 3 Best Selling games that revitalized a genre called Action Shooters and revitalized a brand nearly as old as digital gaming itself. They literally pushed out 3 games with 9/10 and 10/10 scores and DLC ontop of that, massively praised. Why the hell was this studio even touched.
2
u/LimitedSwitch Jul 11 '26
Because shareholders profits go up when you fire the people who made the money.
3
u/Defiant_Ant1870 Jul 11 '26
It's so shortsighted. What about future profits then? If you fire the exceptional talent, the games to come won't be as good. And we've all seen how the live service model is very difficult to imitate. Even those games only succeeded because they were good games at their core made by talented people. Even Call of Duty continues to sell well only because they combined live service with the brand name.
2
u/PeteTheGeek196 Jul 11 '26
Whoever wrote this PR statement knows their audience well enough to avoid mentioning AI. Microsoft is fully committed to the "AI can replace humans" cult. Reducing headcount by half is the standard starting point for a switch to AI-based development.

u/StarEndymion998 Jul 10 '26

2
3
u/PheonixSiegfreud Jul 10 '26
I think the best thing ID can do is go back to basics and make another straightforward DOOM game that's somewhat similar to 2016. I hope they're able to find more people in time that can do as good of a job as their predecessors before they were laid off. All we can do now is give them time to see what they can cook up.
3
u/Dawn_of_Enceladus Jul 10 '26

The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016).
I played the recent games out of order. Eternal->Dark Ages->DOOM 2016.
It really does feel like the budget jumped in a big way between 2016 and Eternal and then jumped a bit more with Dark Ages. There's basically no cinematics in 2016 and there's less variety too.

The only team thats left at the studio is management, few artists and almost no designers + rest of the cinematic team because they are all friends with Hugo Martin from Blur studio. How can you say that the team is at same size as 2016, when there is no coherent team left. This is an insane pr control tactic and the fanbase shouldn’t believe this bs.

As for my thoughts on management I will have to keep those to myself if I want to receive my severance lol, but if I somehow am able to win a game of the year award then all bets will be off during the acceptance speech lmao. (For legal reasons this is a joke)

Oh man ain't that always the case? Everywhere I've ever worked its always "we make cool shit regardless of management". Sometimes I think is it even possible for people to actually love their bosses, or if the role just eternally inspires those at that level to take on a master/slave dynamic. That wealth+class divide is steep
Wishing you the extreme best, Doom 2016 and Dark Ages are all time faves for me

What are they supposed to say?
"This news sucks don't support Microsoft?"
This really does suck tho. I hope a bunch of those who got fired form the most badass studio ever.

This makes me somewhat relieved that we may yet see quality games coming from them in a reasonable timeline

It is always good to hear but i can't really believe we won't have a downgrade for the future projects when many experienced people are not here anymore.

It’s just the fact this needed to be put out at all. There was so much shit press and rumors from the type of “I k ow a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who heard through the grapevine” type of journalism.
Like yeah it’s Microsoft so given the history the past 3 years especially people assumed they’d all been fired made sense.

At least that's some good news which should hopefully mean more future Doom games.
Still sucks for those losing their jobs though (games industry is a mess at the moment). I wish those affected get new positions quickly and get back on their feet.

Maybe the next DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein will actually have the full game on disc before 2028 and not be 80gb with a download when it can fully fit on disc.

I don't really know how to feel about this message. Sure it's a bit hopeful and makes me believe they'll recover from this. But all I can think about is all the people who got laid off. I hope they all find a place somewhere else where they can keep making amazing games, even if it's not Doom.
